This movie is based on northern Ballards which pass on to generations about chevakar warriors (traditional martial art from kerala which travelled to china through bodhidharman who was a Buddhist monk who set up shaolin temple. ) kalaripayattu. In Kerala some communities followed the tradition of marrying maternal uncle's daughter (in this movie the girl but you see references in many earlier movies like kireedam, thanmathra and many more) In this movie the folklore is looked at from a different perspective.
This movie was released in the year 1989 and Mammooty is still comfortable doing main hero's roles. The story in Malayalam was a classic, MT Vasudevan Nair's writing was such unique, I remember some dialogues even now. when the heroine was asked how she was, she says I am happy happy 2 times to make you understand that she was very unhappy, that scene lingers in me even now.
This is a legendary malayalam movie. The legend of Chanthu, "the cheat," from northern songs (legends that celebrate the heroics of chekavars, a group similar to samurai in Japan). The original legend is of Chanthu betraying his cousin Aromal out of jealousy. But MT reimagined it from Chanthu's perspective and retold the story with Aromal and Unniyarcha as the villains and Chanthu as the scapegoat. One of the finest performances by Mammotty and a great exploration into how the ones with power and wealth controlled how history is written/sung.
In the starting of the song, you see women rubbing Sandal wood stick on the stone to make a paste. It is applied on the body after bath. This is common among Kerala aristocracy as it gives a good smell and skin glow. In the next scene you see the lady going around a small structure, which is a small temple that is built inside a house. When you talk about the house, this is not a regular house but something called a Nalukettu or Quad-building. It is like a Square, but the sides of the square are the main building and inner region is sometime empty or sometimes (like in this song) has a small family temple. Because this central region is covered by the house from four sides, it gives women household access to the open sky without the risk of prying eyes of outsiders. There are also water draining system to the central region, so during the rainy season, it is decided to retain the water in the central region, which can be used as a small pond (like in the song). It can also be drained out to give a small ground for kids to play. Kerala is full of forests, lakes, rivers and hills. So, no large army could actually make a run across the state. And someone with the knowledge of landscape could have an undue advantage. So, the local rulers instead of waging long stretched out war has very different ways of settling their scores. First they bet on small wagers which pond has the heaviest fish. Or who is older among the siblings etc. If the issues are not settled by such wagers, they will call for fight to death wager. But they will not fight. So, they have to select a "knight" from select families to fight on their behest. But they have to pay for the knight's service. Chandu's (Mammootty's character) uncle was the patriarch of such a family.

This is movie talking about a family ( Puthooranveedu) of Kshatriyas orr warriors. The actual tale or ballad portrays Chandu as a deceitful character. But MT Vasudwvan Nair who scripted this or authored gives a spin on this with Mammooty playing Chandu. Certainly a nice watch. You have to set your mind to that time frame though
