  • Nestled in the Norfolk countryside among works of art and immaculate walled gardens lies Houghton Hall, one of England’s finest Palladian houses. Rarefied yet humble, opulent yet understated, it is a ‘sleeping beauty’ with a quiet elegance that merely hints at the treasures and stories within. Watch this beautiful video for a personal tour of Houghton, with David and Rose Cholmondeley, the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley.

As much as I love French chateaux and hotels particuliers there's nothing which can compare to an English country house. And there are so many!!! From Chatsworth to Blenheim Palace and Althorp House...the absolute beauty of the decor, furniture, paintings, architecture, landscaping and all the rest make for beauty par excellence. Thanks for this glimpse into greatness and magic!!!

For the most part, it’s because they are lived in.

That is because everything in Great Britain and Ireland is pastiche architecture. It’s all stolen from Italy and thus via French architecture. The English really didn’t grow architecturally in any original way from the Tudor period. They sort of stopped with Dutch influences by the 1600’s. Then it was all theft from Europe. That is why they often are so theatrical. Not to mention far too large.

Unfortunately everything was stolen and sold during the revolution. I always wonder how the French chateaux would be today if 1789 never happened. You can see it in Versailles. So many rooms are just empty or they put a few items there to give an impression. But all this is nothing compared to the time of the Ancien Régime.

I disagree! I find French architecture far too theatrical! English Architecture is much more restrained and elegant! Think Christopher Wren and Lutyens are just two examples!

Fantastic! How wonderful to have the original drawings. The excellent condition of the art, furniture, and textiles is a thrill to see. So much beauty like this has been long destroyed.

HM The King aside, David Cholmondeley makes the current members of the Royal Family sound like urchins! This is not a criticism in any way; in fact, I find the Marquess's voice very soothing!

well , you cant expect them to put an English manor with hip hop music as a background. it has to be classical of course.
