There was a flip side to that coin. As one example, Dan Issel, who was the center at Kentucky, said that coach Adolph Rupp told them to let Maravich get his 50..just don't let the rest of the team get anything. Kentucky was 6-0 against LSU with Maravich. For most of Maravich's career, winning didn't come before his being the star. Again, I blame his father.

Let this sink in: Pete graduated from LSU in 1970. He only played 3 years in college... no 3-point line... stiff (not breakaway) rims... dunking was illegal... and he STILL holds the NCAA D1 scoring record. Since 1970! And he did it all with an un-diagnosed congenital heart condition, which eventually killed him. Imagine if he'd had a good heart.

Maravich is the source for showtime basketball.
The game was not played that way until Pete did it. He could score on anybody at Will.
The are several keys in that video but one is the offer by The Globetrotters to come play with them. That would have been the biggest Contract in basketball history at that time.
More importantly given race relations at that time that speaks volumes on how good he was.
I was at his Jersey retirement here in Salt Lake City. I took my youngest brother then about 16.
They played the highlight reel and he was slack jawed at how great he was.
I yelled down to the floor and said “” Give Him A Contract.””!! The crowd chuckled Pete looked up towards me and flashed a smile.
On that reel he takes a defender From 20 ft out on the right wing underneath the rim and out to about 16ft to 18ft on the left wing and stops.
He takes a quick glance over his left shoulder then back to the floor.
Defender gives up on the play.
Pete picks the ball up off the dribble and tosses a no look behind the back hook shot with nothing but nylon.
Defender is stunned and gives him a well if that’s the way you are going to be about it look.
The answer to your question really is I would play Jerry at the point and Pete at the two.
Pete was the Genesis of showtime basketball. There was nobody better. There never will be because nobody is willing to be that obsessed and work that hard.

I saw him play several times, one of them the 68 point game against the Knicks. He had Walt Frazier, one of the best defenders of all time, talking to himself the entire game. I followed his college career and it was amazing to see. If he was playing in today's game, at his prime, he would the the top scorer on a regular basis with the three-point shot, no question at all. Plus, for the 1970's, he was a big guard height-wise and when you added that to his basketball talents he was unstoppable. Only injuries and playing for bad teams kept him from winning NA titles or MVP's. He was that good.

And in a funny note, I actually played in a game against Lew Alcindor in high school. He went to Power Memorial High School and I went to another parochial school in Brooklyn, Xaverian High School. He was a senior in 1964 and I was a junior and I got in during garbage time because we were losing big and it was unbelievable to see him up close on the court. I was 5'11", which was normal for high school in those days, and he towered over me. He was only in for a few possessions before they took him out and I never got a chance to try to take a shot against him. He was very affable and shook everyone's hand after the game.

The problem with Pete is he was born 50 years before his time. If he played today, with how they allow ball handlers to dribble, no hand checkin , wider spacing, three point shots, he'd be doin things we have never seen before. His jersey would be the #1 best seller in the world, and he'd be the most popular player in the league. Pistol, back in his day, was blackballed by coaches, players, refs, and even his own teammates. RIP to the originator of "Showtime." Great vid as always bro...

Maravich was at LSU from 1966 through 1970, but as he emarrator said, no Freshmen were allowed to play on the Varsity Team, as mentioned, no 3-Point line, Hand check fouls were no called, and no shot clock, all of which would have boosted his scoring. I could drive from Houston, Tx to LSU to see his games, when the Jazz came along, we could go to those games, too. HIs last year, he played for the Celtics in Larry Bird's rookie year. College Bassketball was taped by other schools to learn from Maravich, espcially Bird.

Pete got his name as a very small child when he was too small to shoot a regulation sized ball.
The ball was too heavy for him, so he would heave it all of the way from his hip, which looked like a gun slinger drawing his “pistol”.

Jerry or Pistol? That's a tough one. Personally, I'd give the nod to Pistol as he was so damn innovative. Too innovative for that era as most NBA players were pretty conservative. His scoring average speaks for itself because of his work ethic. Pistol is my favorite college and NBA player. And he is my 6th man on the squad of Kareem, M.J., the Doctor, Bird, and Magic. He was a whole different level in 20's at college and on his shitty NBA teams. Globe Trotters were bigger than NBA when he came into league - and he turned down $1,000,000. He wrote the book on ball skills and had a stroke every bit as good as Curry's today. Dropped 68 on my boy Clyde at MSG! That would have easily been 75 if not 80 with 3's! That was in Center dominated days too. Bad knees ended career - and its so crazy how he somewhere feared dying at 40 and then did - playing a pick up game. Top 20 on my list for sure! As a scorer, ball handler and possibly as a passer, he was arguably one of the best, by far. But, like in any sport, there are many aspects to the game and as time goes by, the game changes with new offenses as well as new rules, which can affect a player’s production in a certain area. Just like in the NFL, it’s a more QB friendly game now, which begs the question, “How many passing yards would Elway, Marino, Montana and others have had, playing in this era?” However, his NCAA scoring speaks for itself.

Maravich was done a horrible disservice when his father, living vicariously through his son, insisted that young Pete play for him at LSU, then let him shoot the ball as much as he wanted. The elder Maravich was displaying his "creation" for the world to see, but along the way he neglected to teach young Pete the most important element of the game: how to take all those amazing tricks and use them to stick the knife into his opponents. That's what differentiates Maravich from Bird, Johnson, Jordan, etc (Larry and Magic in particular were both influenced by Maravich). For the latter three, any razzle dazzle was a means to an end, which was to kick the living crap out of their opponents. Last I checked that was the object of the game.

You're right about that, but Pete developed that killer instinct late in his career which is why he finally won a title with Bird in Boston. He finally realized it's more important to get your teammates involved in winning games and ultimately the championship. You're right in saying early on in his career he was more involved in showboating, putting on a show for the fans which did not include his teammates in playing team ball. That's because Press let him do all that shit at LSU.

Actually he didn't win a title with Bird in Boston. He was with the Celtics for the latter part of Bird's rookie year (which was Maravich's last). He did contribute, and he finally accepted being a role player and not the star, but Boston still would have won the division without him.

@@toddfrank3344 You're right, he didn't win a title with Boston, I thought they did, but I forgot the Dr J led 76ers took care of Bird and the Celtics. But my main point stands in that he realized the importance of playing team ball later in his career, and it's not really his fault. His Pops made him the show boater star that he became by having him shoot all the time and play reckless ball. Still, the guy was quite a player!

    • @toddfrank3344

@@tubucoco Oh, his individual skills were beyond belief. As far as I know the only white guy to ever be offered a contract with the Globetrotters, and he knew enough tricks to be all of them rolled into one. I love the story when he gets called for traveling after..I think he passed the ball to himself off the backboard..and he tells the ref, "How can you call me for traveling? You've never seen that before!" LMAO Unfortunately, he realized the importance of playing a roll on a winning team too late..by then his body was breaking down. You know, regardless of your religious beliefs (or non beliefs), the way he conducted himself after basketball was an example for everyone to follow. His belief in Christ brought him peace, and even though he died way too young, he was happy. In life, Maravich became the ultimate WINNER.

I would go with Pete over Jerry, but only because I'm biased. I grew up going to Jazz games in New Orleans and was actually in attendance when he scorched the Knicks for 68 points. What they didn't mention is he also fouled out with almost 2:00 minutes left in the game.

Pete Maravich was a highly talented ball handler, passer and scorer. That enabled him to be what he wanted most: A Showman and entertainer. And man was he ever. But as a clutch player, he was mediocre at best and played little to no defense. Jerry West was known as Mr. Clutch and was NBA 1st team all defensive squad just about every year until he incurred injuries late in his career. Offensively, he was an assassin among the league scoring leaders year after year. And did so always within the team concept. His image is the league logo not because his name was drawn at random. But rather because his superior talent in all aspects of the game combined with a Jordanesque will and determination to win made him a logical choice (as were a few others not chosen). I enjoyed your reaction to the Pistol Pete video
and commend your open minded view of where Maravich rates all time. I will let others debate that. But your question regarding who was better Pete Maravich or Jerry West is so easy to answer because it is not really close. Of all the shooting guards in NBA history, I would take only Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson ahead of West. Thanks for asking and good luck with your channel.

I would take either or both: Jerry West, Pete Maravich. Both played before the three pointer and were still great scorers and passers.

Great video, sad career for Pete Maravich. Early on the Hawks had a chance to pair him and Julius Erving, but Philly took them to court and got Dr. J. We all lost out on what might have been a legendary pairing of Maravich and Erving. They played together in a couple of All Star games and had a great chemistry. Erving wound up on a great Philly team with Moses Malone, George McGinnis, Bobby Jones and Maurice Cheeks, while Maravich wound up on a bunch of bad teams.
It would've been something to see the Hawks with Erving and Maravich.

And very similar to Larry Bird playing with bad back and achilles problems, Maravich did all this with a completely missing coronary artery-!!! The greats often plow through adversity like its just another day, until it unfortunately catches up with them in some cases.

The Pistol will go down as one of the grandest wizards of basketball as rightfully he should, but notice the video only talked about his offensive prowess. The reason for that is because he played very little defense, which led to him not getting the minutes a player of his talent would warrant. He was more of an offensive specialist but a liability on defense.

Also remember Kareem went to UCLA which was a powerhouse and was dominant before he arrived and after he left. Pistol went to LSU which at the time was one of the worst schools for basketball. The sadness of Pistol Pete to me was that no team he ever played on, except his last season which was with the Celtics, had good players around him. By the time he went to the Celtics though he was past his prime and the Celtics had just gotten Larry Bird. I think he was only there half a season or something like that anyway but it saddens me that if he hadn't retired and the Celtics had kept him, he would have had a ring that next year.

A healthy Pete Maravich and a young Larry Bird would have tore up the league! They would be competing to make the best pass, shot, steal, rebound, on and on! They would have had a dynasty, just my opinion. If Pete had been on a college team with the help like Kareem had, I don't know if it would have worked or not. He could not be taking 40 shots a game on a good team. At the same time, you gotta let him play HIS ball! I don't know, tough call. Jerry West was great all around player. Pete wasn't. I pick Pete as the GOAT due to scoring that much on a lousy team was tough.

Pete over West hands down. Watch his 68 point game. He never should have been cleared to play ball on any level due to his rare heart condition. Lack of O2 scarred his heart for 30+ years. Should have been dead by 15 or 20. He was unstoppable and ran rings around anybody. Teammates didn't know when or where the ball was coming from. Streamlined in motion and effort to enable a body unkowingly not fit for jumping jacks. Bird's dad told him if you practice, maybe you can shoot all the time like Maravich. His ncaa records will never be beaten. Only 3 seasons on varsity. GOAT!

@@AntHenderson2 My dad made me into a big Knicks fan when I was 9 in 1969 just before their first championship. Even though I barely follow basketball any more because defense became so unimportant starting in the late 70's and now all they do is shoot jump shots, and I really HATE that "super team" concept were the stars dictate where they want to form the next one. The Knicks were the first team I loved. They were team orientated and Maravich was the complete opposite of that team ethic from what my dad said. He was fun to watch but you really didn't want him on your team if you wanted to win anything. Thats from my dad not me. Hey, I was used to Frasier, Barnette, Later Earl the Pearl Monroe, Bradly, Debuscherre and Reed. Monroe had a ton of moves too but he had to tone it down when he came to the Knicks.
Funny you mentioned the Globetrotters. No, not in NY they were not as big as the NBA or even college hoops but they were much much bigger than they are now. It was like wrestling is today. Very popular and very scripted and phony as hell. They played the same dam team of white stooges(the generals) every game who's only purpose was to stand there and let the Trotters make them look stupid. It was like going to the circus or as I said a WWE event. Even at "9" time I knew it was phony but again, it was fun to watch. Maravich actually would have been perfect on them as the only white dude.
Oh Jerry West if I want to win championships. Pete if I want to sell tickets.
