For those that don't quite understand the relationship that Linus mentioned between the case fans and the back light, PWN is Pulse Width Modulation. On cooler fans the fan controler turns on and off the full voltage very very fast, resulting in the fan spinning at a constant speed that is dependent on the length of time between voltage "on" cycles. So with the backlights it's the same thing but instead the fan spinning, it makes the light appear to be a less bright as the time between "on" cycles increases. The DC fan control is when the fan control simply reduces the voltage being put out to the fan which makes it spin slower the more the voltage is reduced. With the backlight it makes it dimmer the more voltage is reduced. The DC method is much better for people with Epilepsy or sensitivity to flashing lights or that get migraines easily as the on and off cycles of a PWM backlight may not appear visible to most people, even most that have any of the above conditions, but the eyeball and brain can still partly sense it causing the brain to freak out or get confused, witch can trigger a splitting migraine at the least.
One day, all Linuses in all TechQuickie videos will all be the same color. Orange Linus is funny, green Linus is okay, but I prefer Linus Linus, with authentic Linus reproduction.

I found a new laptop without PWM and I'm having no problems with it. Another technology for projectors is "single chip" DLP. They display multiple monochrome images every second, and depends on your brain to assemble the color image. I see the rainbows horribly (even on the newest ones) and if I look at one for more than 10 minutes, I have a full-on migraine that puts me down the rest of the day. 3-Chip DLP projectors in theatres obviously don't have this problem, just the single-chip spinning color crap does. I get disillusioned when I see DLP used in public venues such as presentations, etc. I look down at the floor the whole time. It is amazing how many people I hear complaining of eye strain and headaches. LCD technology should be mandatory in a public venue like this; but like some comments I see here; people are either not aware, ignorant, or are not affected by these flashing images; but should have respect to those who have debilitating side-effects from these.
I'm from the year 2030. I'll stick to my MicroLED 8K HDR 240hz 1ms display with no backlight, no screen burn-in and no issues with lifespan/longevity like OLED.

if you want to know what kind of backlight your monitor uses, load up a white screen and wave your finger quickly in front of it, if the blur is smooth, your display is flicker free, if you see multiple copies of your finger in the blur, your screen flickers
Back when I bought my first LCD monitor, I did way more research than the average person would. I eventually became fairly disheartened and disappointed, as LCDs definitely do not out-perform CRT monitors in terms of image quality. LCDs may have recently became more powerful in terms of specs, but still arent as versatile in terms of scaling and image quality like the CRTs were. I was also very annoyed to learn that almost every LCD LED-backlit screen contained blue LEDs instead of white or RGB. This makes a considerable difference in quality and also affects eye-health. Too much blue-light = bad, especially if you're about to go to bed. Blue-light filter programs/settings help, but doesnt solve the other problems, and can easily be forgotten about. The part that disappointed me most is how painfully slow the market has been at adopting new technologies that I care about. Higher resolution is not my main priority whatsoever. Color gamut, black-levels, contrast(one of the only things that has improved), viewing-angles and high-hz are what I care about more, and those features have been extremely sparse in the lower-mid end LCD market(and possibly even in the higher-end), and you're almost never going to be able to decently achieve all of them. If more consumers knew the information that Linus shared here in this video, the market would have to adapt to the people requesting/demanding and buying products with those features. I'm sure ill be waiting another 5-10 years since i bought my first LCD before I feel the need to buy my next one. I cant even expect there to be much difference in that amount of time, but I certainly hope there is! I, for one, am tired of LCDs(and especially bluelight LEDs)!
I recently got a mitsubishi diamond pro crt monitor. its max resolution is 2048x1536 @86hz, with a bunch of other resolution modes. www.cnet.com/products/mitsubishi-diamond-pro-2070sb-crt-monitor-22-series/specs/ it's bar none the best monitor I've ever used. The color is simply amazing, though I am definitely very optimistic for oled as well.
@@Liquifiedpizzas OLEDs can have poorly implemented PWM, I am surprised this point wasn't included in the original comment. This is also quite important for daily use, since low-frequency PWM (lower than 300 Hz, quite common in current smartphones) can cause migranes due to extra eye-strain.
I remember the first LCD monitor I saw, put me off LCDs for a while since it was a total blurry mess. Couldn't even scroll a webpage without the entire screen just turning into blur, but that's different now. CRTs still to this say have some advantages over LCDs, but they are being overcome. Also in this day and age LCDs just have so many advantages over CRTs that I can't imagine people still using them. About the only place people still use them is for retro gaming, but even that is coming out with better upscalers to make them rapidly match up with CRTs. I have been working on ways to try to optimize my retro system's outputs to LCDs rather than cling to CRTs at this point.
Now I understand the reasoning behind the yellow phosphorous breaking down on my cheap 2 year old vizio now leaving me with a blue/purplish looking screen. I watched videos that explained it was the led's causing the issue, but didn't know about the led design. Thanks Linus

Small comment on PWM vs DC: PWM dimmers can reach frequencies of up to a few megahertz, now way you can see that. Of course they can be ridiculous slow too. DC dimming comes with another problem: LEDs tend to slightly change their color depending on the current running through them, thus ever so slightly diminishing color reproduction. I'm not sure how noticable this effect is on LCD screens and how well it can be compensated for.

Once you mentioned that edge-lit displays are found on cheaper screens, I looked at my laptop and noticed that the edge is quite a bit brighter than the middle. The diffuser isn't very good at it's job. Damn Emachines e-627 from 2005! (With Windows 10 and a 1.6GHz S1 CPU)

My phone has an OLED display and it is darn gorgeous... but I did notice my keyboard starting to burn into the screen after only a few months. I changed to a third party keyboard that is more subtle to try and patch the issue; This is making my monitor search even tougher.

Or why your 2010 Bravia can still kick some 4K QLED butt. Refreshing to see old style Linus, when he still had time to shave. Today he looks like he's still in lockdown and stayin in house day after day.
PWM per se is not the issue. The issue is the frequency of the PWM signal (different from the frequency of the screen). If the LED are driven by an high enough frequency they are not "turning on and off" they start behaving like a low pass filter and oscillate around a target brightness. The higher the frequency the lower the oscillations.
CCFL is also notorious for deminishing brightness over time. I'm not a fan of led lighting. it doesn't seem to show accurate and full spectrum color. also with rgb (i believe) backlight it just seems as if you are looking at three colors blended together. don't really know how to explain this. with ccfl you will see the colors more as a natural smooth spectrum. I really hope one day there will be screens with individual pixels that consists of just one light emitting pixel that can emit all colors, not three or so next to each other. you will always see it, subconsciously. but most people won't notice until they see it with their own eyes.
+Tijmen J I have an NEC LCD1850E monitor from 2001. It still works great, doesn't hurt my eyes, and the colors are crazy accurate. It also shows more shades of individual colors than I can ever attempt to get a laptop TN or IPS display to even dream of displaying. Yes, it doesn't have as dark of black levels as a newer IPS display; but I don't watch movies on the computer either. That's what I have a Panasonic plasma for.
+North American Survival Attic "IPS" does not pertain to the backlighting, but rather the way the colored sub-pixels in the top layer of the screen (the layer which makes the picture and colors) are arranged. I believe the most common arrangements are "TN" and "IPS". You can tell if a panel is "TN" buy looking at it from different angles, if the picture begins to looked washed out or turns black from these angles it is a "TN" panel. at least initially "TN" panels had faster response times making them good gaming displays, while IPS was better for Televisions because people all over the room could get a consistent experience. IPS has taken over though with the rise of mobile devices like tablets and convertible notebooks, which like TVs need to be visible from all angles.
Do u have any idea why my android phone screen goes on and off while i'm using it?. Sometimes i can use my phone for two hours straight without the screen blinking. Sometimes blinking is continuous and i have to wait for the screen to turn on again. So annoying
They say the same thing about Plasma that they saying now about OLED. Still using the same Plasma Panosonic 720p TV for almost 9 years and it still not burning out.
PLASMA OR BUST Seriously, plasma and OLED panels are very similar, the only disadvantage of plasma is power consumption, but an extra 100 watts is hardly going to melt the ice caps when half the world is eating beef everyday.

i still dont get the rgb backlight, because if you can control the color of the individual pixels on the screen, why cant it turn of the local leds when the picture is black? i dont get it why they all must be lit all the time ( i assume theres a reason)
I have an HPPavilion Ze2000 from ages ago that i have for android x86, and one thing you can do, is turn off the backlight with a button. What would happen is when you needed to close the laptop the screen would hit the backlight button. This was what we had to do in the age of XP laptops. I now see that a modern laptop will automatically turn the backlight off when it's been closed enough. How does that work? I'm sure it's obvious, but i dont know.... Another question I have like that is pretty dumb(i feel). How does a phone, for example, recognize the rotation? Just wanna learn, don't hate me!! :P Thanks!
Just wanna say, that bit about LCDs "eventually" having better image quality than CRTs only holds water when comparing the absolute top-end in both categories, at which point LCDs win by sheer weight of pixels (4k and 5k). Apples-to-apples, at the same resolution, CRT monitors can have much higher image quality than LCDs; the problem is that nobody makes CRTs anymore, and the second-hand CRTs you can find are often from either before the time of high-quality CRTs and horribly outdated, or just one of the crappier models from the later days of CRTs.

It's been 5 years now, curious how you feel about the market now.

Definitely bulky and clumsy, and often slipped off....but the alternative was playing underneath the lamp, lol. (Game) Boy, has technology advanced.

My phone has an OLED display and it is darn gorgeous... but I did notice my keyboard starting to burn into the screen after only a few months. I changed to a third party keyboard that is more subtle to try and patch the issue; This is making my monitor search even tougher.

PWM per se is not the issue. The issue is the frequency of the PWM signal (different from the frequency of the screen). If the LED are driven by an high enough frequency they are not "turning on and off" they start behaving like a low pass filter and oscillate around a target brightness. The higher the frequency the lower the oscillations.
There are three basic types of displays:
Emissive - OLED, Plasma, CRT, VFDs
Transmissive - LCDs mainly
Reflective - e-readers, calculators, watches
There is a third type. It sectors off the monitor in 4x4 to 8x8 inch sectors. The edge of these sectors are LED lit.
Then how come smartphone OLED doesn't have any visible burn in effect?

CCFL is also notorious for deminishing brightness over time. I'm not a fan of led lighting. it doesn't seem to show accurate and full spectrum color. also with rgb (i believe) backlight it just seems as if you are looking at three colors blended together. don't really know how to explain this. with ccfl you will see the colors more as a natural smooth spectrum. I really hope one day there will be screens with individual pixels that consists of just one light emitting pixel that can emit all colors, not three or so next to each other. you will always see it, subconsciously. but most people won't notice until they see it with their own eyes.
+Tijmen J I have an NEC LCD1850E monitor from 2001. It still works great, doesn't hurt my eyes, and the colors are crazy accurate. It also shows more shades of individual colors than I can ever attempt to get a laptop TN or IPS display to even dream of displaying. Yes, it doesn't have as dark of black levels as a newer IPS display; but I don't watch movies on the computer either. That's what I have a Panasonic plasma for.

+North American Survival Attic "IPS" does not pertain to the backlighting, but rather the way the colored sub-pixels in the top layer of the screen (the layer which makes the picture and colors) are arranged. I believe the most common arrangements are "TN" and "IPS". You can tell if a panel is "TN" buy looking at it from different angles, if the picture begins to looked washed out or turns black from these angles it is a "TN" panel. at least initially "TN" panels had faster response times making them good gaming displays, while IPS was better for Televisions because people all over the room could get a consistent experience. IPS has taken over though with the rise of mobile devices like tablets and convertible notebooks, which like TVs need to be visible from all angles.
Do u have any idea why my android phone screen goes on and off while i'm using it?. Sometimes i can use my phone for two hours straight without the screen blinking. Sometimes blinking is continuous and i have to wait for the screen to turn on again. So annoying

They say the same thing about Plasma that they saying now about OLED. Still using the same Plasma Panosonic 720p TV for almost 9 years and it still not burning out.

Seriously, plasma and OLED panels are very similar, the only disadvantage of plasma is power consumption, but an extra 100 watts is hardly going to melt the ice caps when half the world is eating beef everyday.

i still dont get the rgb backlight, because if you can control the color of the individual pixels on the screen, why cant it turn of the local leds when the picture is black? i dont get it why they all must be lit all the time ( i assume theres a reason)

I have an HPPavilion Ze2000 from ages ago that i have for android x86, and one thing you can do, is turn off the backlight with a button. What would happen is when you needed to close the laptop the screen would hit the backlight button. This was what we had to do in the age of XP laptops. I now see that a modern laptop will automatically turn the backlight off when it's been closed enough. How does that work? I'm sure it's obvious, but i dont know.... Another question I have like that is pretty dumb(i feel). How does a phone, for example, recognize the rotation? Just wanna learn, don't hate me!! :P Thanks!

Just wanna say, that bit about LCDs "eventually" having better image quality than CRTs only holds water when comparing the absolute top-end in both categories, at which point LCDs win by sheer weight of pixels (4k and 5k). Apples-to-apples, at the same resolution, CRT monitors can have much higher image quality than LCDs; the problem is that nobody makes CRTs anymore, and the second-hand CRTs you can find are often from either before the time of high-quality CRTs and horribly outdated, or just one of the crappier models from the later days of CRTs.
