I just traded my 2019 KTM Duke 390 for a 2021 MT07 and the KTM was a noticeably brighter and a better light. You can still see with the MT though, it’s not dark.
You took the trouble to video yourself mounting the bike, which many moto journalists never do when they are doing a solo vid. I appreciate that very much as i get to see the overall look of the bike with someone on it.

Excellent review Scott. Very relaxed and informative. I have to say, even though the price was raised just over 300 Euros, the improvements to the bike warrant the extra cash. We are talking an evolutionary process of the most successful naked motorcycle of the last 15 years. Slightly bigger and better brakes, better transmission linkage, fuel mapping improvements, handlebar improvements, lighting improvements and led signals et al. Worth more than three hundred bucks folks.... I disagree with some comments here about yamaha's greed and complacency. I think if they were complacent, they would have left the ergonomics to be subpar, left crappy brakes, Yamahas Infamous horrible turn signals, and left the bike alone. That would have been a bigger mistake.
A great, comprehensive review as always. I don't think Yamaha saw the Triumph Trident coming did they. This new revision could be too little too late. 👍
@@NothingToProve could we expect a new revision in 2022 to improve some things now that they know of the existence of the trident? A new inverted front shock and LCD display for example? Thanks for nice reviews. Looking for first bike and your calm and neutral style is fantastic, I'm also from early 70's and approx. same lenght as you are. These videos have really given me a perspective on different models in this middle class. Thank you and greetings from Finland
As an older, experienced rider (age 61) I bought a 2019 model recently. In my opinion I think it’s best used as a budget bike or for new riders. My complaints are the suspension on less than smooth roads, freeway speed (above 70mph) vibes in the handlebars and a busy sounding engine. The seat, although wide and supportive was uncomfortable quite soon. The power and torque were fantastic, the brakes excellent, as was the transmission. A good bike, just not refined enough for me.

Scott Really enjoy your great honest reviews. Which (MT07 or MT09) has better ergonomics, epecially leg room, for a pillion? Based on photos it appears MT07 has better leg room for a passenger... I am considering a 2021 MT 07 or MT09. Any experience with this... What is your opinion on ergonomics for both rider & pillion?
Thank you David, Sorry, I've no experience with 2up on these two bikes. But the 09 is higher and a little bit bigger and usually, key word there is "usually", that means more room/better for the pillion passenger. The 09 fits me better than the 07, more leg room, and just a little more up-right riding position. take care, Scott
Next spring its this one or z 650. leaning towards this one depending on the new features for 2022 model. Tft dash and bigger tank on the kawasaki really makes this a battle for me. Was pretty sure i would get the Mt07 before but still cant deside.

I even prefer my model,.. and it even has a little more power ,..freer , which in my case is even more , because I put full escape ( exhaust sistem ),.. and it got even better ,.., but it's still a mt 07 ,.. very fun !!
Are there absolutely no internal changes to its terrible front fork? As far as torque and power, the peak numbers have gone down, but are there any improvments in other parts of the rev range?
I think, I like the SV650 better. The V2-engine is imho even better and the design is more I like it. Still both bikes are obviously not for me, just because of the size. I would have to compare the V-Strom and the Tracer. But the result would be the same. Nice video as always! Take care and stay healthy Scott! 👍
Incremental changes are fine. They still hasnt addressed the suspension which was always its greatest flaw. I think the trident will rob the MT07 of many sales but maybe this category will just get larger.
Yea, especially in light of the CB650R got an update to Showa SFF-BP! SFF = Separate Fork Function and the new part is BP = the Big Piston! So Triumph and Honda are leaving the MT07 behind there.
I like the new headlight. When I look at the front of the bike it makes me sort of curious. Wouldn't say that the one on e.g. Trident is ugly but is bland, I look at it and don't care, just another copy of street twin or xsr. I didn't particularly like KTM headlight and the whole front, but when I saw 890 up close...wooow, it looks very cool. Much better in real life than on screen. Value wise, Yamaha is much better, if someone has a tight budget. They offered one of my colleagues a very decent discount + heated grips, crash bars, and some other minor accessories. Triumph gave him nothing. With quick shifter, h. grips and crash bars you easily crossing 8.3k euro mark.
I did it already, a day or two after I rode this, I wanted to ride them both as close together as possible. I just haven't released the video for the Trident as of yet. Saturday :)
Hi Scott, quick question from a Chinese motor newbie here (just got my licence 3 months ago, and now riding Yamaha NMAX 155 for daily commute). Which one do you recommend for a green hand, 2021 SV 650 (Euro 11915) or 2021 MT-07 (Euro 15248)? Or even Ninja 400 (Euro 7055)? as the first motorbike to ride. Million thanks here. BTW, really love your way to test bikes, and 'teaching wife ride' series.
Thank you 😁 I personally would take the SV650 cause it has so much character and is so playful, the others are a bit lighter but here is a big BUT, I would never get bored with the SV & the looks are classic . So, thinking long term, the SV would be a better choice. And if you ever wanted to do "track days" the SV is the best choice because the mods available for the SV are just endless. Bottom line, let your heart pick the bike and consider the dealer that you are buying from too. Good luck, Scott
Nice review as ever! Clear comparisons with the competition as a useful extra. BTW Scott; has your wife made her choice what bike will be the follow-up to the Monkey?
Thank you Larry, My wife is taking her time with that decision, she wants another summer on the Honda Monkey, we were not able to do a lot of riding last summer, got out together maybe 4 times for just a few hours in total. So over this last winter she said that it's not time yet to move up in size, so we'll take it slow and hopefully do more riding this summer. Covid19 really put a damper on over night/weekend motorcycle trips...etc. so maybe we will get more time this summer but the out-look is not looking promising :( Take care, Scott
Yes, I see you picked up on that. The SV is so much more "playful" and has "soul". The MT07 is so refined that the playfulness and soul are missing. Don't get me wrong the MT is very good, almost too good, "for it's own good". LOL! So if you want a technically perfect bike, then the MT07 is the bike. But if you want a bike that will always make you grin from ear to ear, every time all the time, then the SV is the bike that gets more smiles per mile. :)
@@NothingToProve Thanks! I ride the MT03 for the last 6 mnths and already thinking of upgrading. I think its a great 1st bike and I'll prbly keep it for a little while but eventually I'll switch. That SV650 looks like the perfect all around bike. Keep up the good work!

@Back2Bay6 I'm looking at a V7 as a 2nd bike for town/short rides. Looks funky and different. Can get a 2016 2ith 3000 miles for £5K. Plus no chain maintenance. Nearest Guzzi dealer 200 miles away though :( Glad you are enjoying V7.
I wonder if Suzuki is finally giving the SV a decent update? Yamaha will continue to sell these at large numbers, I think the value is still there just not as much as previous years.
There's speculation that suzuki might do away with the v-twin engine, in the 650cc class, and move to a parallel twin engine configuration like this MT 07. It's just simply easy and cheaper for suzuki, to manufacture parallel twin engines, over v-twins. So if that happens, it won't be a SV650 any more, but a new model of bike in the 650cc class.
@@kimw200blaze4 We'll see how it sounds, I'm sure it'll be reliable. Is it to be better in the super twin category? Beyond that it just needs to update the looks and keep on the value price side. Excited to see some new stuff from Suzuki and I hope they can follow their GP win with some great bikes.
Hmm....interesting indeed! Highest in sales, not necessarily the best. It's more hitting the sweet spot being in the middleweight naked budget group. Most can't buy MT09/10, too much money and the MT03 is too little so the 07 is in the sweet spot!
Love your reviews/videos man. Really do. And especially your chanel name and message, ride like there's nothing to prove. Big fat like and a sub from me. You are one really cool dude! 👍
I love this bike and I want to try it out. but I keep hearing the suspension is not great, Especially for bigger riders, I’m 6’5 225lbs. Your thoughts?
Yea, this was kind of small for me and I'm 5'10" 185, so you might want to step up in size, like the MT09, Z900, something in that range might fit you better. Ride safe, Scott
@@NothingToProve updated the suspension again. Updated to the lcd display. Slight weight savings. And the power went up about 1.3 hp and 1ft lb of torque “on a dyno”. Not huge update but seems interesting enough to compare. The biggest change is the forks
Well, it just came out in 2019 and now in 2021 it's a "light refresh" because of Euro5. I think since they had to update the motor to Euro5, they "refreshed" a few things. Two things went in the wrong direction, toque down and weight up (according to Honda). Torque got less and higher in the RPM range, was 47.2@8,500 now 46.46@9,500, not good there. And the weight increased by 2 pounds, which is common for Euro5 compliance (same +2 lbs as the MT07). But hp seems to be the same. The LCD is now color but still the same LCD that is difficult to see in the sun...at least I'm assuming from the pictures from Honda. Suspension was Showa SFF, now it's Showa SFF BP, so they just added the "big Piston" which is nice and I would only notice that difference on a track day, I would not notice "BP" on the street doing legal speeds. I don't know...hmm...I'll take a look at it when I see it in person and then decide from there, the deciding factor is if I think I can get enough clicks to justify taking the 25+ hours to make a video. Since I just did the launch of it in 2019. Ride safe, Scott
@@NothingToProve I can see the miss conception on the weight on my end. They were claiming weight savings from the forks. The lcd has a brighter background light and the font was increased to help visibility. I actually did see this on a side by side with my 2019. As far as the power numbers I got those from motorcyclist magazines Chanel. They dyno tested the 2019 and the 2021 and the the 2021. and after watching it again the claimed numbers were +1.5hp and +2ft lb over the 2019 to the wheel. I’ve seen there were supposed to be some changes to the internationals on the motor. For euro 5 yes but supposed It helped smooth out the power dip between 5-6k rpm. Either way I appreciate your time and response man 👍 ride safe

Wonder if the chassis still goes rusty after a week, like mine did way back when they first came out. Nice engine, shame about the rest of the bike though. Ever since it was launched people have complained about the cheap suspension and what do they do as an update? An ugly headlight and new handle bars. Come on Yamaha. Sort it out. (Nothing personal to you Mr reviewer, just a bit disappointed at the bike).
Yea, I was a little disappointed too, if they had updated the suspension, then it would be a great bike but for now Yamaha did just enough to stay ahead in sales...no more no less...sad.
@@NothingToProve Thing is. They are no longer ahead. If I was going to buy a new middleweight naked bike then I would probably have the Triumph as it's actually new, not just re hash of an old model. Of course, if I could afford it I'd have the Aprilia but that's a whole new ball game. On the other hand, what do I know? I own an MV Agusta Brutale 660 so I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about ;-)
The new MT-07 is uglier, has a weaker engine while the mt-09 has made it stronger, it also has telescopic forks when the mt-03 already has inverted forks. I have the impression that the MT-07 paid the price for all updates to the MT lineup.
That headlight unit looks like a Chinese knock-off part ! ... suppose it matches the rest of the acres of plastic these Yamaha's are covered in . They clearly must appeal to a certain demographic , to me they just look cheap .

Hi Scott, useful review thanks. Do you think you'll be getting to ride the 2021 Moto Guzzi 850cc V7 this springtime. Here's hoping you do.
Yes, soon I hope :)
The new GSX-S1000 is coming, hopefully GSX-S750 and SV650 next
Can't get over that headlight, just looks goofy.
it's 7,020 € in Romania, and if you negotiate, you might get it down 250 more
Yea, it really is a good bike for a great price. :)
Like the new music!
Yamaha has lots of loyal customers and don’t ask why
The only bike in the MT-line that doesn't have usd forks, but it is the best.... Kind of a head scratcher
Hmm....interesting indeed! Highest in sales, not necessarily the best. It's more hitting the sweet spot being in the middleweight naked budget group. Most can't buy MT09/10, too much money and the MT03 is too little so the 07 is in the sweet spot!
Tracer 7 isn't USD either
How about the new Aprilia Tuono 660?
I hope this month...if the bike comes in...I'll be on it!
@@NothingToProve Cool. Shall look forward to watching your review and thoughts. ATB.
Love your reviews/videos man. Really do. And especially your chanel name and message, ride like there's nothing to prove.
Big fat like and a sub from me. You are one really cool dude! 👍
hey guys! will you choose mt07 over cb650r?
I love this bike and I want to try it out. but I keep hearing the suspension is not great, Especially for bigger riders, I’m 6’5 225lbs. Your thoughts?
Yea, this was kind of small for me and I'm 5'10" 185, so you might want to step up in size, like the MT09, Z900, something in that range might fit you better.
Ride safe,
Scott
What backpack is that ? Looks snazzy
did Yamaha update the front suspension at all?
nope, it's the same :(
On your performance chart why does the new MT-09 come after last year’s model ?
Because number 2 always comes after number 1. Right?
Or am I not understanding your question?
Great review!!!
Between this one and the Kawasaki Z650 which one would you personally choose if you had to buy one yourself?
I wouldn't 😁 I would buy the SV650 👍😁
Did you say somewhere Trident vid will be today? Or my memory failed me :)
Yes, it's up now :)
Will you be reviewing the 2021 cb650r or cbr650r with the updates?
What are the updates besides euro5 compliance? I was not aware of any others?
Ride safe,
Scott
Very good summary and just wondering if your best friend "wife" ever picked out a new ride? Have a great week ahead, Thanks!
Thank you! No not yet, she is happy riding the Honda Monkey for right now. Maybe next year.
@@NothingToProve My wife is the same, she loves the Monkeys.
Still not available even for pre order here in JAPAN!!!!
So I guess I’m not getting it.
Good get a real bike
Weird, there are a few in stock here in Croatia and just order mine in full black
@@bubonicrider8021 yamaha doesn't love bringing euro designed bikes to japan.
Never did (probably wont) get the tracer 700. So I don't buy yamahas.... sad times
@@KairyuRider Damn man that sucks.
Two thumbs up. Thanks
Two thumbs way up👍👍😀
I dont know I think I would rather get a SV650 or a Trident now.
Agreed!
Wow only know I realize that they added a second catalytic converter just below the radiator and covered it with an aluminum heat shield. Looks a bit ugly from the front But the ugliest thing is that headlight, the old one is 10x better.
Second hand Duke 690 R.....or even left over stock
Wait, is this exhaust stock original? 🤔
Yep.
@@NothingToProve Omg 🤔 is it upgraded or something? because i want to do a driving school and buy this bike, and i watch x videos and in every video it have eh meh sound but this? 😦🤤 (sorry for my english)
The other videos probably don't have good mics that can handle the sound. :) Just go up to your local dealer and ask them to start on up for you.
@@NothingToProve Thanks for help 🙏 i rly want buy this sweet..
Good beginner bike ?
sure 👍
I like how you say Yamahaw
That is funny you talked to your wife and said "man this bike is like Yamaha did not do much"
Yeah the headlight assembly looks like a codpiece
the 400 € could be due to the inflation😅
EXCELENTE MOTO AQUI NO BRASIL
I'll stick with my cb650r!
SV650 or this bike? Which one would you choose?
SV650!
@@NothingToProve Thanks for the reply!
The rims really ruin this color scheme for me. anyone else feel the same?
I feel like they MAKE the color scheme. Without them, it's boring af, like the other colors for this year.
I love the wheel colour the others are dull and boring
Yeah that headlight is hideous. Looks like an alien eye or something... 😆
I own an MV Agusta Brutale 660 so I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about ;-)
675...
The new MT-07 is uglier, has a weaker engine while the mt-09 has made it stronger, it also has telescopic forks when the mt-03 already has inverted forks. I have the impression that the MT-07 paid the price for all updates to the MT lineup.
Yamaha really dropped the balls with the robot front ends. from mt 3, 7, 9 and 10. sucks ballz big time.
Your not a brit?
Nope! 😁😊
@@NothingToProve lol man that's a pretty bike I want one!
At your age ? You don’t look a day above 30!
That headlight unit looks like a Chinese knock-off part ! ... suppose it matches the rest
of the acres of plastic these Yamaha's are covered in .
They clearly must appeal to a certain demographic , to me they just look cheap .
Are you native German? You sound American lol
Native Earthling LOL! Yea, American.
Hay EURO you can bl-w me, all your compliance is doing is messing up our bikes. You want EURO5 keep it in Europe and leave the rest of us alone. The bikes are running so lean they are not going to last long as the bikes should and the price keeps going up.
Almost everything you say sounds like a question.
Yo , nothing to prove is why man .
Sorry but that front end, ewwww
Idk what is with Yamaha's fetish with insect looking bikes
