omg THANK YOU so so much for this detailed explanation! I've been dancing salsa (on1) for over 10 years and have wanted to learn to dance on2 but NO ONE has been able to explain it the way you have here! I really appreciated the musical theory and the connections you made between dancing and the instruments! Muchas gracias and much love from Canada 🥰
Hello, I think it would be important to explain that son/contratiempo is not salsa on2, those are two different things and people tend to confuse them both
This video was super super helpful! Every class focusses on counting 1,2,3.. but no one takes the time to teach you how to listen and feel the music. Feel the music and youll find the count! Thank you :)
This such a great video to practicing this style. Could you possibly make a part two of this where its just pure practice with varying instruments without pauzes or explanation for an hour 😬😬😬 This will be the best ever introduction to son cubanos basics because as the saying goes "the basic stepeis the first thing we learn ...but the last thing we master"
Thank you very much for the explanation ❤ this is exactly what i needed. i've joined a few workshops but i couldn't really get it well until i came across this video. Now im much more confident with myself😊
Great video. Just wish you mentioned that it is also very common to start with the right on 8 instead of the left (depending on the part of Cuba, neither way is more right)
Thank you for this video. Dancing Son on 2 is still very difficult for me. After a few bars of music I keep coming back to dancing on 1 :( But I promise I will keep practicing :) Regards Wojtek
Perhaps reading clave written music + match (?) + dance steps could help? Most instruments start on music count 1, but dance step 1 starts on music count 2(?) Thé Dance phrase is 12 12 1 5 1/4 note phrase hold step hold step step (last step is 1st 1/4 note of 3rd measure of 2 1/4 notes- 3rd measure is cut in 1/2 so it extends over musics 6 1/4 notes. To visualize this without written music us difficult-- 5 1/4 notes Dance phrase over 4 1/4 notes music phrase!! Socorro!!
Great video, finally I know what is Son, thank you! Can you tell me the name of the last song in video, even Shazam can't pick it up:) * btw your assistant is super cute
Some "Line" dancers would probably agree with you. It's not as simple, though. When it comes to on2 dancing some people dance 123 567 with an open break "on 2", some people dance "power on2", so the son rhythm and some people dance palladium style with a step on "and of 8" and "and of 4". All of them will say, that they are dancing on2. From a rhythmical perspective, if we call 123 567 "on1", it's logical to call 234 678 "on2". These are just names - the concept behind it is to listen to the music and find a suitable rhythm.
I wish but I can't do any of this. Years of lessons led to total confusion & heart-break. Which took me to Cuba & with many many hours dancing with native Cubano women also dancing side by side with a man teacher I learned to feel & this is only way I can dance. Schools seem to teach numbers while natives feel the rhythm & let spirt loose. I can spot a woman I want to dance with at 20 meters ! Men often come & shake my hand while out in Holguin Casa de la trova. Many dance Cuban Salsa here in England.
Only one thing I was confused about though: the very first demonstration of the claves started with the 2 clicks followed by the 3 clicks, so I thought the first bar (or beat 1 to 4) were to start with the 2 clicks. But later in the dance it seemed the opposite (starting with the 3 clicks). Is it because both are possible depending on the music?
In the video it always starts with "2 clicks", we usually start the step on the last clave hit, so it might feel like it's starting on the 3-side, but it's not. We start our step "on 8", because it's the strongest bit in son, and it's the easiest to predict it and at the same time the easiest for beginners to start with it. In general, there are songs with 2-3 or 3-2 clave - so both are possible.
Hi! The point of the video is to understand the musicality of son. When our students start to learn son, the most difficult part for them is to actually dance to the correct rhythm.

Muy bien! As a youngster in old Oriente, Cuba, I learned on the son clave.

BEAUTIFUL AND HELPFUL. One thing I am not sure about, is SON a dance style danced to what consider SALSA MUSIC? Is son consider a genre of music?
Hi! Son is a genre of music. We have a son playlist on our spotify.
@ Thank you so much

So it's like a one-drop!
Great video. Just wish you mentioned that it is also very common to start with the right on 8 instead of the left (depending on the part of Cuba, neither way is more right)
Yes, I should have mentioned it. I did in another son video, but I also wish I have said that :)
Thank you for this video. Dancing Son on 2 is still very difficult for me. After a few bars of music I keep coming back to dancing on 1 :( But I promise I will keep practicing :) Regards Wojtek
Thanks for your comment Wojtek. Yes I am sure with practise you will keep the rhythm for the whole song 😀

@@MirkoZrnic-f5l Thank you! We (Michal and Anna) went to Belgrade for a salsa festival many years ago and the level of Cuban salsa there was awesome!
The “on2” he is talking about is not to be confused with “linear” salsa on2. Dancing in contrariempo is a more appropriate term for Son I think.

What settings
do you have on the salsa rhythm app
When using all instruments
2/3 son clave
Congas - Tumbao 2 Congas 1
Guiro Son
Bass Tumbao I-IV-V-IV
I think that's it.
