I enjoyed this video very much. I appreciate the focus on smaller cities and towns. This video may be my favorite video of yours. Also, I love your accent. You have a charming accent.
This was excellent content, cities/ towns I was unaware of. As a new retiree planning to leave Vancouver (now Asia) for Europe this video is very much appreciated.
Agree, once you got to portugal, i had to stop n rewind multiple times to understand what you were saying. Very good info for the inconvenience. But slowing down would make for an easier viewing for us english speakers. Thank you so much for all the details especially the climate and cost of living. The very details i am looking for in my destination search of retirement in Europe. The proximity to larger cities where most health care would be found is also information i am seeking. All in all a great video to help narrow down an extensive search.
One thing you need to be mindful of in Portugal is the housing. Humidity and mold is a huge problem. Evora tends to be the hottest region in Portugal so you might think it doesnt get mold. but i rented 5 flats in Portugal and mold was a problem in 2 of them. yes its possible to find decent housing but dont rush into buying a property. please dont take on the huge mistake of trying to do a renovation BEFORE you have lived there 2 full years. if you have been residents 24 months and havent escaped 3-6 months a year (3 months in winter and 2 months in summer) and you like how you feel, then sure consider then to buy. but there are so many issues that surface once you make long term plans.
nice content congratulations ! But what you did not mentioned or take into account when talking about cheap spanish places (and also italian and french) but in special spain I´m living there for a very long time and have some real estate agencies so know the prices very well. You want find in any of the mentioned locations apartments for the whole year round with rents under 500 to 650 for a 1 bed with max 35m², and a 2 bed for less than 700 to 1200, for a single house (townhouse) you had to pay year round from 1200 up to you want hear that number ;) the best thing is that nobody will rent out to you an apartment for more than 9 month what means form September to the end of may you can get afordable flats in between 550 actualy at the lowest end for a studio (35m²) or 650 to 800 for 2 bed 60 to 80m² energy and water is additional. So if one likes to have a apartment all year round he must have plenty of luck to find one under a 1200€ per month because that´s the upside potential what the owners ask for when missing the rents in summer when the prices for renting the same apartment rise from a normal 650 to 800 monthly to 1000 to 1250 weekly, and this would make 3 month (june, july, august) with in lets say 4,5k€ monthly so 13,5k€ losses to cover when you set against the normal monthly at the highest end with 950 for 3 month that´s 2,85k€ ! And belive me even 80 km distance from the coast isnt really cheaper and for sure your not that well connected to all kind of services ;) The same is true for all the coastal areas of Italy and in special Sicily I´ve been working there for more than 5 years lived there nearly 3 years and have friends and family in Sicily.
These small European cities look so charming and perfect for retirement! I’m curious: What factors were considered in ranking these towns-cost of living, healthcare, or quality of life? Are there any visa requirements for Americans looking to retire in these countries? Also, how easy is it to integrate into the local community, especially if you don’t speak the language?
You almost nailed it: cost of living, healthcare, quality of life, plus safety and tax incentives :) Basically that. If you don't speak the language in these small cities (except those in Algarve in Portugal), integration with the local community probably will be quite hard.
Which of these cities would be your choice? *The best answer wins a special gift!* Some of the videos and resources mentioned in this video: Don't retire in France Unless you can handle these 4 things ua-cam.com/video/MNzTQY4Rtwo/v-deo.htmlsi=jueRc8WQnV6f4Yti / *Retirement in Greece vs Italy: Things NOBODY Compared Before* ua-cam.com/video/K2IkQR0bZX4/v-deo.htmlsi=1tNfC9ISagRnfOIh / *Want to learn a new language while having fun?* I learn languages by myself using Lingq. *You can try it for free by using this link* ( and if you subscribe, this link gives you a 40% discount! ) www.lingq.com/accounts/new/?next=/accounts/subscription/basic_2024/12/b_12levi/checkout/&referral=LevideSouza *All my best-selling books on living abroad* you find here bit.ly/expatbooks / Subscribe to my Patreon here patreon.com/The_Expat
I'm not even 1/2 way through and the prices you quote for apartments are ridiculous. If they were twice or more the size, that would sound good. But how do you have a 2 bed apartment that's 34m2? My bedroom is that size and my place isn't that big, my small bedroom is at least 24m2. But you are nailing it on great and affordable cities, just don't expect the housing to be as inexpensive for the # of rooms. I'm moving to a city 12 minutes away from Benidorm by tram, but it's 1/2 the price.....Limounex France is a bargain 2 bed 91m2 at 560 is great.
We leave in Portugal for over 3 years now. Your information about Evora, Tavira and Lagos not correct. You can find an apartment for 650 euro a month only for the short term during the winter season. If you are looking for the year around rent, it is 1,200 and up for something decent. Wind in Lagos during the winter is very unpleasant. Evora is stupid hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Tavira has no easy accessible beach. I doubt that the rest of the towns in your video have the true information.
I wish you’d leave the name of the town on the screen while you talk. You only say it once, quickly, and with all the talking I forget what town you’re even talking about.
Hello expatriate, you speak too fast...some of us older listeners are having a hard time understanding your broken English. Speaking slower would be much appreciated.
You can slow down the video yourself. You will see the little gear cog symbol in the upper right corner of the video. When you click on it, a menu comes down and you can choose the speed you want by clicking on it. Start with .75. Any lower, and the words may be too distorted.

Thank you very much!
Limoux is a fantastic small city. I was there 10 years ago. It is the birthplace of 'sparkling wine'!
This was excellent content, cities/ towns I was unaware of. As a new retiree planning to leave Vancouver (now Asia) for Europe this video is very much appreciated.
A v important thing for me, is the migration / visa process and ease of finding housing / accomm which isn't too costly.
That is a good point! I made an entire video about retirement visas in Europe, here: ua-cam.com/video/rUmj0wZ8Dl8/v-deo.htmlsi=Yub0N3f7SlDm5YvK
@@the_expat - thank you, and pls update in about 4 yrs time which is when I plan on making a trip to find a place to retire in ! thanks again !

Love your accent man. Often wondered what happened to you after Borat.
Ele fala português. Possivelmente não fala russo o kazakh
LOL
Yes!! A tax video on Portugal, plus the other steps to immigrate.
Thanks, Dracula!

Very informative
Have you done other more north Italian towns too

You must learn the language. To not do so shows disrespect and arrogance.
Is this a sign to leave Hawaii running into another good video of yours?
Hahahaha good one! Thanks!
What about the visa requirements for each country?
Good question! We made an entire video about it :) ua-cam.com/video/rUmj0wZ8Dl8/v-deo.htmlsi=CiP34S0RCDaTbnL1
Where do you find these apartments and rentals online?

It is 2-room apartment, not 2 bedroom. So it means a bedroom and a living room. Thanks!

Take notes.
Rewind, replay and you don’t have to sound condescending with broken English comment 🤣🤣
Do you pay tax to your home country and the new country?
not if your country has a dual tax treaty with your country of residence.
Why are taking like that??
I’m sick of cities. I want peace

Use closed captioning option.
Wow the sense of entitlement! Someone has to change the way they speak to accommodate your needs 🤣🤣
I slow down the playback speed. Works great!
No to living in Europe.,.........from the Ozarks drinking fresh spring water 💦
Well, sounds enticing too :) Good choice!
Never heard of Perrier?
