“Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey -Past and Present”
What is the Buckfast bee and why did Br Adam become so famous?
Was Adam the first to experiment with bee breeding?
Difference between bee breeding and queen rearing.
What inspired Br Adam to create a specific “strain “of bee put into the context of the Isle of Wight disease and the understanding of genetics at that time.
How did his objectives change over the years and how did he achieve these (use of isolation site etc.)?
Inbreeding problems which can occur with artificial selection alongside unsustainability and nasty out cross possibilities.
Why we don’t breed the Buckfast bee here anymore, why we prefer locally adapted bees (and how we have achieved this).
Clare Densley has been working at Buckfast Abbey since 2008. She has been keeping bees since 1992 and did do a stint as a seasonal bee inspector for a couple of years. Although she does “manage” her colonies, her philosophy centres around understanding the bees and working with their natural instincts as much as is possible.
Martin Hann has been keeping bees since 2008. He was previously a seasonal bee inspector for the South West region for 6 years and has been working alongside Clare Densley at Buckfast Abbey for the last 4 years. He has recently left the National Bee Unit to become a full time member of the Buckfast Abbey bee department.

I found BIBBA a few months ago, and it has been a joy to spend cold Canadian winter evenings going thru all the past webinars. This one was a joy to listen to and thank you all for your willingness to share your experiences and expertise. Every presentation has a gem of information.

Very good channel, a lot of interesting and informative lectures.
But unfortunately this presentation caused great disappointment and sadness. 😞😞😞
The sadness is that such a wonderful place, the Bakfast apiary, has fallen into decay. But this only proves how important Brother Adam was and how idealistic he was in the breeding of bees. It's sad how professionalism is giving a way for hobby beekeeping with no interest for breeding at Buckfast Abbey.
I wish Brother Adam’s archives would be digitized and be available for general public. This is the history of beekeeping, it must not be lost !!!!!!!!

I have listened to many webinars in the last year. But I must say this was one of the most enjoyable and educational. Thank you so much Claire and Martin, awesome slides and a good double act. Hopefully many more to come in the future?

So it would appear that the Buckfast Abbey Apiary has virtually nothing to do with BR. Adam anymore. Such a shame.

Fascinating. It seems to be almost impossible to breed the “ideal” bee. We don’t even know what that means. Personally, I have been beekeeping for 11 years and haven’t brought a new queen into my apiary since that first day. It’s just my opinion, but I believe the result has been apiary reared queens, which from natural selection are well adjusted to my local environment.

Sad story. This people not continued but ruined the heritage and idea of breeding the buckfast bee. I am very dissapointed by this people but its life.

That's certainly one way of looking at it. Another view is that they realised that locally adapted bees were superior?
