So glad that this video came up when I googled. I wasted so much vinyl today thinking that I was doing something wrong. I previously had a different brand transfer tape that worked with zero issues. Ran out and just picked up a roll of Cricut brand until my other tape gets delivered. Cricut really screwed people over with this transfer tape.

I wish I had seen this a couple hours ago. I was so frustrated trying to get my vinyl to transfer to wood.. and had to painstakingly peel each letter off the NON transfer paper. LOL

Same problem here. First, I had a hard time finding a corner that would peel, then it tore and I ended up removing the transfer tape in 3 pieces. Also, part of the image stayed with the transfer tape and would not adhere to the surface I wanted. Finally, it left a tacky residue on my vinyl. And this was after following your suggestion to lessen the stickiness by repeatedly sticking it to a microfiber towel and removing it. I did this 10 times and I still got the results I mentioned. Thanks for trying to help people. I wish I knew about the problem earlier. At least it's good to know that I'm not the only one!
Wow.. This video is a lifesaver. I just started and for the life of me could not get the vinyl to come off of the Cricut transfer tape. I figured the roll was a waste and that I would have to start trying different ones but nope! I grabbed one of my husbands microfiber rags and for the 1st time, the vinyl transferred onto the glass perfectly. I missed an "i" and at the end took it off too quick so the loop in one of the letters crinkled but it's still a win! Thanks!
So I am new to Cricut and I just cut my first project and this non transfer tape mess happened to me. I called all my crafting friends and none of them know why it wouldn't transfer on to the plate. Now I know. I will try it tonight. Thank you so much
Hi Toby, Welcome to the vinyl cutting experience! The transfer tape has to be less sticky than the vinyl to be applied for it to apply correctly. There are better and less expensive transfer tapes. The two that I use most often are TransferRite 1310 Medium Tack, this is a clear tape and the TransferRite 582U Medium Tack is a paper backed tape and works well doing a dry or wet applications. I hope to have a video soon showing these amazing transfer tapes. Thanks for the comments!
Try masking tape, it transfers the designs great because it isn't very sticky. We messed up a lot of vinyl trying to use this transfer tape until my husband decided to try masking tape and it worked perfect and of course is cheap!
After a frustrating evening of losing the last of my stencil vinyl, this happy man gives me hope. Excited to try his method in the morning with my “hickey duke” tool and non-transfer tape. Thank you Mr. Dave!

oh my gosh you're a lifesaver!!! i accidentally ripped a couple notebook covers (i didnt realize 'till after i shoulda used a test piece) and i thought i was doing something wrong, but i checked the packaging and it the tape was the extra-strong variety. this helps a ton, thank you

Awesome!! I use contact paper for my transfer tape and have encountered difficult vinyl letter removal, but also HORRIBLE residue patches on my projects around the letters. This should help both !

Still viable advice seven years later. I just tried to make a bookmark for my daughter using the Cricut transfer tape. I got it to release the vinyl on the card stock but it left adhesive on the vinyl itself and I couldn't slide the bookmark I had just created into the bookmark plastic sleeve without it sticking to it. I used the microfiber on the vinyl design to de-stick the vinyl letters and that worked but I'll be using this trick next time to de-stickify the transfer paper first instead. Thanks!
I went through a whole of vinyl paper yesterday. I did the cut out on my Cricut. I then cut the transfer paper to size and I was able to transfer my design to it. Of course, it was really sticky but I thought that's how it was supposed to work. It's when I attempted to transfer the design to my wood board that it wouldn't transfer and just stuck to the transfer tape. I was tearing my hair out. I will try your method and see if it works. I know that this video is almost 3 years old but if it works I will be very happy. Thanks.
This Cricut transfer tape I purchased was a disaster from the beginning but I hated to scrap it. I've been using the medium tack transfer tape brand TransferRite Ultra Clear 1310G and it works well with most everything. Vinyl with very thin cuts a low tack tape works well. Seems like everything I venture to do requires a lot of trial and error to figure out the right combination. I will try to do a video soon to demonstrate what really works. Thanks for the comments!

I wish I had seen this before I did a whole wall art project that I sold, after sending it tomy customer she had to send it back and I made a full refund due to her not being able to get the vinyle of the cricit "non" transfer tape, thanks for showing me how to do it without any problems.
You would think the Cricut stuff would work better. I have been using the TransferRite Ultra Clear 1310G, it's a much better product and much cheaper in the long run. Thanks for the comments and have a great day!
I am going to try this! I am doing a design with trees and little leaves and am having so much trouble getting them to stick to my transfer tape. I thought the stickier the better chance of the tape grabbing all the pieces of the design.

I just got my Cricut Maker yesterday and got this strong transfer tape. Strong is better, right? Ha ha, not so much! After successfully (and proudly) cutting my first project, and then not being able to adhere it to the glass jar, I thought surely I was doing something wrong. It was late so I frustratingly just went to bed. This morning I had the thought to try and make it less sticky by pressing it over and over with my fingers (it was small) and it worked! Then I saw your video and was so pleased to see you had a good suggestion for larger things. Great minds think alike! Thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, like everyone else I was going crazy trying to get my vinyl off of a piece of transfer tape, and rubbed and rubbed and nothing, wasted so much time and vinyl. After watching your video and doing what you suggested rubbing the transfer tape onto a microfiber cloth, it came off and went on super easy. So Happy!!!

The tool you are using to burnish the vinyl to the cardstock is called a scraper, but it burnishes well too, so you can also call it a burnishing tool. or a hickeydo, whichever you prefer! :-)
I had no ideal what most of the tools were called when my wife asked for some help with a split monogram. Since then I have made a lot of vinyl cutouts with a real vinyl cutter and have learned there is a weeder pick tool (small pointed tweezers work better) a squeegee, cutting mat and several spray fluids for different applications. I will have to do some new videos soon to share what I have learned. Thanks for the comments!

You can always use hand tear tape or packing tape in place of transfer tape!

My husband ruined a birthday project a few years ago and so I got discouraged from learning to use the cutter! I am so excited to give it a try now!

I wish I had seen this before I did a whole wall art project that I sold, after sending it tomy customer she had to send it back and I made a full refund due to her not being able to get the vinyle of the cricit "non" transfer tape, thanks for showing me how to do it without any problems.
You would think the Cricut stuff would work better. I have been using the TransferRite Ultra Clear 1310G, it's a much better product and much cheaper in the long run. Thanks for the comments and have a great day!
I am going to try this! I am doing a design with trees and little leaves and am having so much trouble getting them to stick to my transfer tape. I thought the stickier the better chance of the tape grabbing all the pieces of the design.
I hope to get a video together soon of some different transfer tapes I use that are awesome. Thanks for the comments.

I just got my Cricut Maker yesterday and got this strong transfer tape. Strong is better, right? Ha ha, not so much! After successfully (and proudly) cutting my first project, and then not being able to adhere it to the glass jar, I thought surely I was doing something wrong. It was late so I frustratingly just went to bed. This morning I had the thought to try and make it less sticky by pressing it over and over with my fingers (it was small) and it worked! Then I saw your video and was so pleased to see you had a good suggestion for larger things. Great minds think alike! Thank you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, like everyone else I was going crazy trying to get my vinyl off of a piece of transfer tape, and rubbed and rubbed and nothing, wasted so much time and vinyl. After watching your video and doing what you suggested rubbing the transfer tape onto a microfiber cloth, it came off and went on super easy. So Happy!!!
So glad this helped. I'm not sure what kind of vinyl this Cricut transfer tape was made for but it would have to be super sticky for it to release from this transfer tape.

The tool you are using to burnish the vinyl to the cardstock is called a scraper, but it burnishes well too, so you can also call it a burnishing tool. or a hickeydo, whichever you prefer! :-)
I had no ideal what most of the tools were called when my wife asked for some help with a split monogram. Since then I have made a lot of vinyl cutouts with a real vinyl cutter and have learned there is a weeder pick tool (small pointed tweezers work better) a squeegee, cutting mat and several spray fluids for different applications. I will have to do some new videos soon to share what I have learned. Thanks for the comments!
