always expose the nebari and trunk base before anything else

I like to give myself a chance to take care of the plant before I start it on it's way to being a bonsai. If it lives under my care, then I find it easier to care for it as a bonsai.

What looks like grass seed is probably some kind of grain hulls. Ive found it in other trees soil.

I think you are right, most of it is gone as much as possible.

I like the pines as well. I can't wait till spring, I finally get to prunes the black pines that we let grow for over a year. I'll post that video when it happens!

@@lotsofhobbies Awesome, I look forward to it. I’m new to bonsai but have loved trees for a long time. I have 4 acres of Scot pine on my property here in Ontario

@@JasonSchmidt-1979 Wow! You have a lot of future specimens. I bet you will become very good quickly because of your affinity, you know how they look small and large.

@@lotsofhobbies I’ve definitely caught the bug. It’s so much fun to grow and care for miniature trees. There’s the horticulture side but also it’s an art form. I love it!
Thanks for taking the time to say hi! 🙂

@@JasonSchmidt-1979 Do you play your guitar for your trees? They supposedly hear you talk to them, maybe they can hear music too.

possibly could use a hose to wash the top layer away so you can see the bottom of the trunk and the nebari before cutting any of the 'branches' - get rid of the tap root and keep as many feeder roots as possible --also keep a lot of the original soil for repotting

Hello just like to ask how Is that mugo pine that I comment on about a month or longer ago?? Also I just got a mugo last week and looking for advice

@michaelleyba2907 The mugo is doing well. I am about to do a watering video and I will highlight the mugo pine so you can see it. I want the plant to get a lot of fine roots ( 2 years) before I do any repotting. The initial styling looks like a tree that I would like to climb. As it grows, I just want to avoid any branches getting too leggy. Think a lot before cutting.

Hello have you heard of heroin bonsai? Well I'm no master but HE is and lol well I was cringing when you cut first instead of keep digging until you find the true root j.s. 🙈

I will look into heroin bonsai, thanks! I am no master, so mistakes will be a normal part of my day. One thing that is for certain, I’m sticking with less expansive material until I get better.

My wife didn’t like wiring but she is starting to see the benefits. There are people that use the no wiring / cut and grow method and can make outstanding bonsai trees. Check out bonsai heirloom when you get a chance.

@@michaelleyba2907 I'm sure Peter Chan would have a chuckle when seeing his bonsai nursery referred to as 'Heroin Bonsai'. It's actually called 'Herons Bonsai Nursery', and Peter and his late wife (Dawn) opened the nursery in 1986. Peters' hundreds of UA-cam videos are a 'must watch' - for beginners and the more experienced alike.
Another excellent YT bonsai resource is Corin Tomlinson of Greenwood Bonsai Studio. Corins'father - Harry - founded GBS in 1978, and it was his book 'The Complete Book of Bonsai' that started my bonsai 'journey' a decade later.

Bummer - the Larch died. The chickens 🐔 are good company.

I think they are a more advanced species to care for. I am still learning to care for the main two different types, the larch is both types conifer and deciduous. Agreed about the chickens.😀
