I don't possess an agriculture degree but I'm definitely looking to financially invest in farming on the continent. Specifically produce as I eat only plant based. No meat, dairy, eggs, or cheese and I'm anti GMO. I see the problems South Africa is having right now with the farms. Most of the farmers that got their land back don't have the financial resources to get them up and running again.

Absolutely! Most of the time, not all the time, Africans from the continent will come to America and they don't really reach out to us at all. But when we visit the continent or migrate, we will go out of our way to get to know the culture and the people. I wonder how other diaspora Africans are treated when they visit?

I watched the live panel discussion and I didn't really agree with the South African brother. And I'm an African myself. I don't think he's qualified to understand how it feels for African Americans to come back home to Africa, the land of their ancestors. I've seen some AAs who after they land in Africa for the first time, they fall to their knees and kiss the ground. And I've seen some who once they land cannot contain themselves and break down into tears of joy. I think we continental Africans need to let them express themselves in whichever way they feel like. Let them enjoy their first time on the continent and all we need do is get out of their way, and not be the joy killers. The brother, however, had some other wonderful insights, though.

Wow, I am glad to see you back . Here is my take on that, I was fantasize about Africa in negative form which I learn from western education but I always want to visit until one day, I finally made my mind in visit Senegal Dakar. Since then , I made 5 trips currently I am building for dream home there. That was the best feeling in the world when I land there. Just to be in all black country, wow,the feeling was better than (sex) . Growing up in jamaica my siblings and I was told consently one day we will move to Ethiopia . I don't know how much you know about jamaican culture we strongly believe in Africa specially Ethiopia.

I've always been confused by this because as a Ghanian I grew up not knowing much about the slave trade but knowing that Jamaicans were our brothers because many of us were taken there, and Ghanaians LOVE Jamaicans. But when I moved to America and learned more about Jamaicans it was all about Ethiopia and it makes no sense to me because not a single slave taken to the western hemisphere came from Ethiopia. I know much of this has to do with Haile Salasie and the rasta movement but jamaicans have so much Akan culture and history in them I.e Queen Nanny, the Maroons, Coromantee, Anansi, Ackee I mean you even look like us it's crazy! But I agree with you Senegal is such a beautiful place, the culture is so humbling, food is AMAZING, the people are so kind and beautiful

sista , it is great to see a beautiful and intelligent woman like you, showing interest in the MOTHER LAND. enjoy it. no place on earth is perfect...but africa is surely BLESSED. but also remember , that we as black people ,all over the world are MESSED UP, ever since the western world landed on us(slavery and colonialism 1441-1888).They have messed up our view about ourselves using their educational institutions and media. so we have a very awkward way of seeing each other and are prone to disrespect each other. but pls don't let that put you off. stay strong and keep studying and enjoying africa.... and yes: i agree with you, you don't need ANY SPECIAL PERMISSION to return HOME. YOU ARE A NATURAL AFRICAN, so AFRICA welcomes you NATURALLY.

I'm currently reading Homegoing and this conversation is so timely for me. For starters I can relate to the sense of pride that you speak of. I agree diasporas should have free access to genealogy DNA tests and opportunities to visit our ancestral homes. I've never considered moving to Africa but the desire to leave the US has always been something I've daydreamed about.
I visited South Africa Johannesburg when I was 23 and I learned so much. 10 years later I am still so curious and intend on visiting the continent of Africa again.

congratulations Kylan on your interview. I am Namibian living in Windhoek. I also feel there is a need to give guided home land experiences for the youth in America. Sometimes a new perspective is all that one needs to impact a sense of purpose in a young persons' life. I don't know what would be needed to realize this, but we can work with a local church that has outreaches in informal settlements and helping vulnerable individuals. I think an exchange program of some sort would be ideal. we offcourse need to get sponsors and a structure in place so make the most out of the visit... i know one AA couple(preachers in windhoek, their ministry is called KOI international) they had a program to pay for vulnerable children to see black panther last week, so maybe a few interested people can come together to make it a reality.

But as an African American I'm disheartened when I run into Africans who are stand-offish and look down on African Americans. I just want unity and I don't understand why many (not all) Africans are not as engaging and welcoming. We are the same people with the same bloodline.

Most Africans are welcoming but sorry about the bad apples. There are some who still hold on to that resentment of being made fun of by African Americans in the past & didn't feel that welcomed by African Americans when they first moved to America. You know stereotypical jokes about Africa, being made fun of for the food they eat , called African booty scratcher, & etc.
The good news is that the mutual respect is improving on both sides IMO. The internet is playing a big role as well. In real life I see more AA's and Africans dating, getting married, and simply just being friends. I believe relations will get better due to the increase of 2nd & 3rd generation Africans. I am second generation. Yeah, just ignore the bad apples.

    • @AbiaSaloise

It has a lot to do with ignorance about one another. I also think that for some Africans, the only exposure they have about AA is from main stream media, either in RAP music or ratchet reality TV shows, so we need to educate one another, one way is through UA-cam , show the side of your culture that is not shown on tv(propaganda mostly is shown on TV but the average person does not recognize propaganda right away). I am African living in Africa, and I have learned a great deal about AA life and their struggle through youtube.

Well said! Good points throughout. Black youth throughout the diaspora should have the chance to visit the continent and learn about it. AA's visiting may not have all of the proper protocols but I'm sure many of us would follow the universal "golden rule" (treat others as you want to be treated). I visited South Africa in 2013, amazing experience, the black Africans there were warm and welcoming and we had good conversations with them. Everyone was courteous and respectful on both sides to each other. Cool that you were on Al Jazeera- thanks for sharing your experience.

*Excellent video.. love what you're doing. Having said that, my only issue with those native Africans who believe that there should be a qualifying criteria for Black people from the diaspora, who wants to visit the Continent, why don't these same Africans have the same reservations for white people? I am unapologetically diasporic African and I deserve to visit any African nation without being subjected to vacuous, narrow minded imposed standards. Sorry!*

Yes I agree with you in what you are saying in this video. I would like to add that I feel that as an African American, we are looked at like we have money and we have to make their lives in whatever country in Africa we are in better. I feel like that is selfish, I have gone to Tanzania and Ghana and the people always act like you have money or they say take me to America with you...and I'm like just get on a plane! I think to myself that I don't know why they act like I have to invest in them or take them to America and I am here just trying to take care of myself! If anything I feel Africa owes their people who left as slaves some type of help, in order to assimilate and live in Africa. But anyway sorry its just me ranting however that doesn't stop me from wanting to live in Africa, because this is still a future goal of mine. I just wanted to say that you did are great job on the panel and I hope you do more interviews like that in the future!!!! Go sis!!!

1hanamai...Same thing happens in America. Some AAs saying to Africans...take me to Africa with you. But it's true that Africans on the continent think that AAs have more money than them. And this because all they see on TV are rich AAs, singers, TV personalities and movie stars.

I love the fact you felt the need to expound further on your answers on this platform. I do think it is our responsibility to teach our people on the contenint about words that has a negative conitation. I do get they are uneducated about American racial issues. I feel it is our job to correct some of the things about black people in America so Africans on the continent will be mindful of their comments. great job!

Firstly great follow up video and I love the points that you made. Also just want to really thank and encourage you to keep doing what you do and creating opportunities for dialog between diasporans.
Im West African but grew up British was married to AA until recently so I understand where you coming from. Def support more AA going to Africa (and more Africans being more cultured about AA) . Better romanticized views than negative ones. Bottom line is its as important for Africans to see AA showing them love as it is for AA to get a full and deeper understanding of themselves and African cultures. We don't fully yet appreciate the power and necessity of greater solidarity/cooperation between black Dispasporans and Africans. But we gonna change that either this gen or next couple I believe that

I think that if both sides are humble and receptive, the interaction can be wonderful. There is damage on both sides, one side is coming from a history of slavery and the other side is coming from a history of colonialism. Some people have very little tolerance for stupidity. That was the impression I got from the South African panelist. I saw a AA girl on UA-cam completely trash Ghana in true ghetto fashion. It infuriated the Ghanaians who saw the video. I have a completely different perspective and I feel very drawn to many Africans that I have encountered(e.g. Nigerians and Ghanians) because they are similar to my Jamaican side of the family. I am African American and Jamaican culturally just like you are of Caribbean descent. Nevertheless, I have seen some African Americans who are 100% educated and receptive to their African ancestry.

Brilliant minds think🤔 alike! I too said to many of associates and friends many years ago, that if black American children had an opportunity to go to and spend time in a black nation while learning their AA history, it could help our plight in the diaspora! 🌍

I spent over 6 months in Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti) and overall, I felt more relaxed, less stress and more appreciative of Africa. I saw and met many white people who were living the dream in Africa and enjoying every minute of it. The locals treated them well, unlike how blacks are treated in America or the west in general. Africa is nothing like it is portrayed in the western media. The African countries are striving with natural organic resources. Cost of living is low, and your American dollar can go a long way over here. For the price you pay to live in the west you could live like two kings in Africa, with a maid, gardner, and driving ready and willing to take care of all your daily needs. Don't let the media fool you into thinking that Africa is not worth the visit.

I struggle a lot with people feeling the need to use the n-word with or around me, and not understanding or accepting when I (kindly) tell them that it makes me uncomfortable. Do you usually address it? Or let it go? I know part of it is a lack of education in black American history, but sometimes it gets me!

I'm a black woman from the UK and have seen the struggle of Aftocaribbeans in Europe and Latin America but a strong sense of pride for most in their African heritage. I really have a burning desire to at least see parts of Africa.

I watched your segment on Al Jazeera. You were great. I agree it did seem that there was subtle shade towards African Americans and their desire to be a part of Africa.
    1. Yes, there are some AA who go to Africa with romantic ideas. This is because they want to connect to a history and culture they were denied. Many don’t know or socialize with Africans in the US so they don’t have someone to school/teach them the does and don’ts like I did.
    2. Africans also have a romantic view of AA. I constantly had to combat the American stereotypes of AA while in Africa. Also, I was expected to know certain African culture because I was Black. I was constantly defending myself and explaining how it was wrong to hold me to certain African standards when I had No clue. Somethings I was willing to learn and some I just weren’t because they went against my own beliefs and culture.
I was also shocked at how many Africans knew nothing about the Slave Trade.

We need more conversations like this. We're not obligated to agree on everything because we do in fact have our differences. But that shouldn't stop us from doing business with each other. I do want to point out, it's hypocritical to have a high expectations placed on African Americans on how we're supposed to approach Africa while having very little (if any) on non Black foreign nationals. There are still European tourists to this day who expect VIP treatment and even butt in lines for service.

There's no a place without bad and good things. It's all about how you tackle them. Take a trip to Africa and experience the adventure. I know we all gonna have different points of view.

But for Africans calling African Americans the N word its not necessarily ignorance. Its the media. Africans watch lots of western media and how the blacks in the states hv come to glorify the N word. So in turn they dont see no offense if they see african americans and call them the N word. Of course you dont need African approvals because you are one of us. You are our sister and friend and so be at home in Africa.
