@@maxwoodbridge1264 its not as easy to get an ID as you think here in the states. Lots of lower class individuals don’t have the means to make it to a DMV or somewhere to get an ID necessary to vote. And it’s not a surprise why conservatives states are the ones that are so supportive of ID laws that only affect the demographics of people that DONT vote republican. It’s even less of a surprise when you consider the fact that voter fraud exists less than 1% of the time and is hardly a serious issue. It’s purely a tactic to create barriers for American citizens that want to vote democrat. Democrats are fine with voter ID laws. I think we should have them. But ONLY if they are free and easy to obtain for all individuals.

I agree. My only reservation about him is that he's often taken in by right wing grifters because they share his disdain for the far left. Arkansas Gov Faubus called up the National Guard to keep the students out of the school. Eisenhower did a Federal call up of the NG and told them to go home. Then he brought in active duty Army to guarantee entry for the students. There may be other vague areas concerning the Nat Guard and "territory" but that issue appears settled. They are, in effect, only on loan to the States. Unless there's been an actual change to the law since 1954
There really is no argument against having an ID requirement to vote. Having said that, there is every reason to take time to put together a timeline to make it happen in a controlled manner complete with assurance that all people can easily and cheaply get an ID long before the requirement starts to take effect.
That is literally the argument against ID requirements to vote is that it is a hurdle for low income or those without reliable transportation. I think there may be very few that would be against it if you were just issued an ID without a financial burden.

I'm in a vote by mail state. I've lived at the same address for over 12 years. Every single election I get extra ballots, once I got seven extra, meant for people who have not lived at my adress the entire time that I have lived there.

The answer is more nuanced. I can only speak on North Carolina because it is the state I am familiar with but to register to vote you can use an ID. If you don't have an ID you can use the last 4 digits of your SSN. If you have neither you can check a box saying as much. The NCSBE will than use this information to cross check with other entities such as the DMV, SSA, etc to verify that you are an actual US citizen. There is more to it than that, but that is the jist.

College ID versus Gun License discussion seems nonsensical to me, PLENTY of college students are not citizens, they are studying abroad and what have you. However, to own firearms and pass a 4473, you NEED to at least be a permanent resident with proof of said residency. I am of the opinion, as are many, that if you're not a permanent resident or a citizen, you should not be able to vote here. I do not believe that to be unreasonable, and bringing up gun licenses specifically seems more like a "ha see, those republicans (to which i am not, by the way) care more about guns than democracy"
The ID is used at the polls to prove you are who you say you are not that you are a US citizen. You prove you're a US citizen when you register to vote. So your point about college ID's is null.

I feel like Sam has been pretty consistent. His best content always comes when the bravest voices are needed the most, which was more the case in 2020 and 2021 than right now. As far as TDS, I am a lifelong liberal who shares Harris' views 99%, and have voted against Trump every chance I get, but I think TDS is a real thing. Just because someone is bad, or even a potential threat, doesn't mean the perception of those negative features can't be blown out of proportion for political gain.

At around 25:00 Sam asks a perfectly reasonable and straightforward question about why anyone would resist the need to have proper identification when they vote. His guest then launches into a song and dance about Sam's "meta-question", the semantics of identification, and the alleged sinister motives behind voter ID laws. Such arguments just come off as disingenuous, for the following reasons: Passports and driver licenses aren't the only form of official photo IDs. The same state agencies that issue driver licenses also issue non-driving photo IDs, usually at a fraction of the cost (or even free in some states; and in many states it's free if you're homeless). And I'm not sure why being poor or a minority should mean you're less likely to have access to your own birth certificate, and/or social security card. Someone needs to explain the connection there. Also, a photo ID is already required for so many things in day-to-day life (as Sam points out at the above-mentioned timestamp) that it seems unlikely most citizens wouldn't already have one. One last point: so many countries around the world that are even more liberal overall than the U.S. require official photo ID for voting, so it's interesting that the pushback on this in the U.S. is from the left.

I think the republicans are worried that without showing ID, somebody could use somebody else’s registration to vote. Of course, you can’t vote twice. So, I can’t give my registration to my neighbor and say “here, use my registration and go vote”. Once your registration shows you’ve voted, you can’t vote again. These people are just trying to make it harder for brown people to vote. If they were honest, they would admit that most illegal immigrants couldn’t care less about voting, and wouldn’t risk getting caught and deported just so they can vote for people they know or care nothing about.

Trump is basically a 1990s democrat on social issues. And a 1990s Republican on the economy. He is also personally reprehensible in almost every way. But jts still harder for me to pick Harris.
Sam was a great debater. He explained the best way to defeat your opponent is to articulate their argument in a better way than even they could. Then systematically destroy it. Unfortunately he has lost the ability to articulate his opponent’s arguments. And this is why he lost half his audience.

Arkansas Gov Faubus called up the National Guard to keep the students out of the school. Eisenhower did a Federal call up of the NG and told them to go home. Then he brought in active duty Army to guarantee entry for the students. There may be other vague areas concerning the Nat Guard and "territory" but that issue appears settled. They are, in effect, only on loan to the States. Unless there's been an actual change to the law since 1954

There really is no argument against having an ID requirement to vote. Having said that, there is every reason to take time to put together a timeline to make it happen in a controlled manner complete with assurance that all people can easily and cheaply get an ID long before the requirement starts to take effect.
That is literally the argument against ID requirements to vote is that it is a hurdle for low income or those without reliable transportation. I think there may be very few that would be against it if you were just issued an ID without a financial burden.

The answer is more nuanced. I can only speak on North Carolina because it is the state I am familiar with but to register to vote you can use an ID. If you don't have an ID you can use the last 4 digits of your SSN. If you have neither you can check a box saying as much. The NCSBE will than use this information to cross check with other entities such as the DMV, SSA, etc to verify that you are an actual US citizen. There is more to it than that, but that is the jist.

College ID versus Gun License discussion seems nonsensical to me, PLENTY of college students are not citizens, they are studying abroad and what have you.
However, to own firearms and pass a 4473, you NEED to at least be a permanent resident with proof of said residency.

At around 25:00 Sam asks a perfectly reasonable and straightforward question about why anyone would resist the need to have proper identification when they vote. His guest then launches into a song and dance about Sam's "meta-question", the semantics of identification, and the alleged sinister motives behind voter ID laws. Such arguments just come off as disingenuous, for the following reasons:
Passports and driver licenses aren't the only form of official photo IDs. The same state agencies that issue driver licenses also issue non-driving photo IDs, usually at a fraction of the cost (or even free in some states; and in many states it's free if you're homeless).
And I'm not sure why being poor or a minority should mean you're less likely to have access to your own birth certificate, and/or social security card. Someone needs to explain the connection there.
Also, a photo ID is already required for so many things in day-to-day life (as Sam points out at the above-mentioned timestamp) that it seems unlikely most citizens wouldn't already have one.
One last point: so many countries around the world that are even more liberal overall than the U.S. require official photo ID for voting, so it's interesting that the pushback on this in the U.S. is from the left.

I think the republicans are worried that without showing ID, somebody could use somebody else’s registration to vote. Of course, you can’t vote twice. So, I can’t give my registration to my neighbor and say “here, use my registration and go vote”. Once your registration shows you’ve voted, you can’t vote again.
These people are just trying to make it harder for brown people to vote. If they were honest, they would admit that most illegal immigrants couldn’t care less about voting, and wouldn’t risk getting caught and deported just so they can vote for people they know or care nothing about.

I’ve been listening to Sam for almost a decade, and he’s had on many guest I’ve disagreed with, but this has to be one of the most smug and cuddled people he’s ever interviewed.
