Bet NPS could benefit greatly from the addition of aminos. Might be worth experimenting with.

Super interesting! I have sun coral in my mixed reef tank! Feeding reef roids for months now! Loves some flow and darkness!

I feel like a little more effort could be put into harvesting these corals that you're growing, or even collect from the wild, and then do RNAseq or shotgun sequence either the coral gut if it can be dissected out or the whole soft coral. People have done studies on copepods themselves to see what they're feeding on (I know of a study that looked at Antarctic/Arctic copeods that did this). Studies are also done on plant endosymbionts this way. This video is 4 years old so maybe someone's tried it on these NPS species by now perhaps, or maybe it was done by 2016 and just sitting in the literature...

I’m game, are you funding that effort?

@@mattwandell7415 sequencing is cheap now! Does your institution have internal funds? Or maybe the cal academy/ucsd or another institute has grants, or would be willing to collaborate? But I would still be surprised if no one has tried this!

@@mattwandell7415 although I think I’ve since learned that these guys are eating marine snow/detritus which would require a different approach like stable isotope labeling of marine snow. Scripps is also another resource there!
