Lata Mangeshkar was humility embodied. She wouldn’t disparage any fellow artist in any way. But when it came to her dignity and self-esteem, she was the hardest person to deal with. No matter how big or important a person was, he or she wouldn’t get away with their hurtful behaviour. When Raj Kapoor, the great showman, gave Lata’s brother, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, a raw deal, she declared that she would not sing for him. Raj Kapoor was shell-shocked. He had to beseech her on bended knees before she would change her mind. This video talks about one such interesting episode in the story of the collaboration between Lata Mangeshkar and Raj Kapoor. राज कपूरजी ने जब royalty देने से मना कर दिया तब लता जी ने उनकी फिल्मों में गाना बंद कर दिया था। इस बीच राज कपूर की दो फिल्में बॉक्स ऑफिस पर बुरी तरह से पीट गयी जिनमें लता जी ने नहीं गया था।तब राज कपूर को मजबूरन ROYALTY देने के लिए राजी होना पड़ा। तब कहीं जाके लता जी ने उनकी फिल्मों में फिर से गाना शुरू कर दिया। लता जी ने बहुत बार अपने interview में इस बात का खुलासा किया है।

We still don't have any singer of her caliber who is stopping now. She is not singing a lot from 1990. The gap nobody can fill up.
Many of the "definitive" comments contradict other sources and the accepted general practices - to say some of them are factually incorrect will not be an overreaction! Narration is good - so by and large its more of a fantasy - "Manohar kahaniyaan" - should be taken with a spoonful of salt!
1. Ram Ganguly was likely dumped as he was using Barsaat tunes elsewhere.
2. SJ were chosen as Barsaat MD during internal discussions and not while explaining the songs to lata.
3. In her own memoirs, Lata reminisces that she was surprised by the good looks of Jaikishan, who went to invite her for Barsaat, mistook him for a spot boy and exclaimed "even spot boys of RK are so handsome". When she visited RK, she realised (S)J was actually the MD of Barsaat!
4. To claim that RK was missing from the "Ghar aaya mera..." recording is very likely absurd. RK used to be heavily invested in the music. No recording could have happened in his absence. RK was not entirely happy about the rhythm and there is an anecdotal story about the dholki player who was called for the recording at midnight. I leave it to you to figure out his name!
5. To claim that RK used to have visions during ongoing recordings and he used to use record alaaps separately and put it in songs sounds ludicrous. Thankfully, you spared "O basanti, pawan paagal". Or may be, RK had some visions during its recording too!

No doubt Lata and RK both were one of their respective types but SJ were the soul of RK music/songs (even after Kal Aaj Aur Kal)! The immature treatment given to SJ in the video raises serious doubts about the veracity of the content!

Yes, Jayant ji...Barsat was S J''s first film as music directors. As we have mentioned that Shankar-Jaikishan were Ram Ganguly's music arrangers, but on hearing them explain the song "Jiya beqarar hai..." and its tune to Lata, Raj Kapoor decided to say goodbye to Ram Ganguly and get Shankar-Jaikishan instead to direct the music of Barsat, giving the duo their first break. I am highly thankful as I was not aware of all this and now I realized about industry. I was aware that Raj sahib was knowing the importance of musical instruments and he was very perfect in selecting songs and the out come of the instruments and songrr performing he has sweet ear for.mudic and he can distinguish between bad and good playback
