ONE PERSON MADE ALL OF THESE DOLLS?!?!? That is an insane effort! Even just the amount within the school is like a lifetimes work but there's an entire village. It's amazing honestly.
I love Conor's turn around from "to me making you suffer is worth more than any discomfort I suffer" to trying to convince Chris to leave and volunteering to do the checkout
Full confession: I rewatch Chris's videos A LOT. I love the discovery and exploration of them on the first go, but they're jampacked with so many different things and jokes that it makes them super rewatchable with so many different facets to each video, but also surprisingly comforting and relaxing. I often find that my UA-cam algorithm brings me back down an Abroad in Japan rabbit hole that I'm pretty much always down for. All this is to say, I've rewatched this video many times, but I always forget that the worst hotel room has this amazing visit to the scarecrow village embedded in it, and I get this epic wave of warm melancholy, almost nostalgia, when that music comes up and we enter the scarecrow village. Chris has endlessly great editing, but this is one of the segments where I feel Chris's sensibilities really shine: Connor is stating how sad the whole situation is, almost afraid, it could have been edited like a horror movie; instead, Chris turns to this soft, melancholic tone that is also bright and hopeful, turning it into this gorgeous moment of seeing the loss of the village through so many different lenses at once, while still having this bumbling Welshman make jokes throughout. I just love it.
Mold is no joke. My brother and I lived in a house for three years without knowing about the mild mold problem, and a year later we’re still recovering from the awful effects it has had on our bodies (like, we couldn’t figure out what was wrong with us for the longest time, and only like the tenth doctor figured it out)
@@AbroadinJapan you may have difficulty breathing, skin rashes or irritation, coughing, red eyes from itchiness, etc If you have an allergic reaction to mold, it's not pleasant to say the least-, even long term can cause a lot of problems involving your muscles and nerves Good thing you didnt stay there for long!
@@AbroadinJapan My brother was basically dying. Not even a joke. He’s only about 120 pounds (54.4 kilos) when he should be around 170 pounds (77.1 kilos). It’s really hard to describe exactly what’s happened, but the mold gets in your gut mostly, and starts absorbing nutrients and things from food you eat, and robs medications of their effectiveness. It messed with us a lot psychologically as well. We were basically losing our minds, and as soon as we moved back home, we saw improvements within a week. My brother’s part of the house was particularly bad so I can’t explain it as well. One of the first warning signs we missed was our shallow breathing. Our normal doctor we’d see for unrelated things noticed this, and apparently it’s your body’s way of trying to stop you from inhaling more of the mold. I took deep breaths over a few minutes and actually buzzed from the oxygen a little 😆. This probably wasn’t very helpful, so my apologies. But it’s hard to put into words the toll it took on us. We’re doing much better now, but my brother is still heavily effected.
I had mold issue in a house and had a host of respiratory and mental issues. Later a heart issue attributed to still having the toxins in my body. Just getting away from it isn’t enough. You two should do a detox routine for sure
@@AbroadinJapan sounds great, but I think Connor has lost his hotel booking privileges from here on out. And I think his restaurant choices should be met with caution as well.

@@Andy-up5fc Yep! Coz Connor is straight up bitching about any minor inconvenience and I am here for it lmao! Hope the next Journey Across Japan will feature Connor.
I think I understand Connor's feelings towards the village with the scarecrows. It's sad to think about how as we migrate into cities, and even internationally, these small communities and towns with their craftsmanship, stories and memories are just lost to the wider world. They only live on through the few who share them or those who like Chris and Connor happen to stumble across it. While the scarecrows are somewhat scary, they're a reminder that the town used to have a very real, thriving community. Thanks for sharing it!
I‘ve seen this village on the show „James May Our Man in Japan“ and they talked to the puppet maker. It really seems like a mournful place but she always tries to place the puppets in happy situation like the festival in the school building or the wedding.
You have to remember , Connor is from Wales , and this exact same thing also happens a lot in there , so i think he kinda knows how it must be for a small community to just dissappear
"I didn't realise how bad it was until we walked out of the frontdoor into the fresh air and experienced what air should smell and taste like" Is not a sentence you ever want to hear regarding a hotel of any kind.
Connor actually saved Chris in this one, I can't imagine what would happen to him if they didn't leave. Imagine spending 10 hours lying in a blood stained bed and suspicious air
Yeah, I mean, I kinda get it. I don't like to be complain over smaller issues. But the dirt under the one bed alone would have been enough to go to the reception and ask my money back. This hotel must be violating health regulations the state it is in...
The marks on the walls are probably what happens when a room that smells strongly of cigarette smoke gets damp and the nicotine runs down the wall. Those walls have not been cleaned in years.
Also based on the matress, blood too 😂 Or drip marks from trying to scrub the blood out of the what was once white walls and they just said fuck it, good enough. The mold actually could partially be from that too. It's not enough to just clean blood up, but parts of the wall and floor usually have to be professionally cleaned and removed to prevent odors and mold from sticking around. They probably cut corners and just told their housekeepers to clean it (who already clearly don't care about their job that much to not even check under the beds 😅). That whole room needs to be torn down from all the damage and completely redone. But hey, at least there was no bug problems? Lol
@manny I should mention that I work in the resort industry and watch a lot of Spaulding Decon as cleaning motivation 😅 (Thankfully I don't believe there's been any deaths at my resort, at least not any that I know of. But I can say that not all people or places know how important it is to hire professionals or are too cheap to. Housekeepers can only do so much 😅)
I can't believe no one has called dibs on a Nagoro inspired horror movie. Everything's there: dolls all over the place, no humans seen, all roads leading out blocked, easily explained no cell coverage due to the mountains…
Bruh, just imagine being at the gymnasium at night in the middle of a storm. Lightning flickers through the windows illuminating the scarecrows with nothing but the sound of rain and the taps of your footsteps as you walk. Pure nightmare fuel.
Not gonna lie, a huge typhoon, a dangerous bridge, a creepy town with more scarecrows than humans and finally a moldy and bloody hotel room where you might not wake up sounds like a pretty cool start for a horror movie. Or a Call of Cthulhu campaign.
The rural side of Japan can look absulutely stunning. The shot where we could see villages in the mountains with the fog at 6:53 was especially beautiful. Ngl I would actually love to live in a place like that if I wasn't so much of an addict of modern technology. At any rate I hope that one day I will be able to visit Japan and see these places myself.
Yeah, same. Technology hinders me from wanting to live in a place like that. I'm sure you'd be driving an hour away just to get to a grocery store or something.
that village full of scarecrows was heartbreaking. it's like the spirits of the of the people who used to live there are given form, especially since some of them are actually based on past villagers.
Leaving was probably the wise choice. Mold can make some people sicker than others, and it is quite drastic varying person to person. Some people will be sick almost immediately, others can handle it for months/years. Connor did right leaving, if he's mold-sensitive it can make you extremely ill.
@@LaniakeaDenizen he's probably more tolerant to it. I'm pretty tolerant to it myself, I can't even detect some mold where other people can immediately, and it's never made me sick. That said I'm not superhuman, I have mild hay-fever and allergies to other stuff lol.
Mold, dried blood (yes, it is most likely blood on the walls), actually filthy, dusty as all hell, dead insects, beds are probably crawling with mites. Yeah nah, staying there for even an hour was risky, especially when Connor said he was feeling sick. That hotel should actually be shut down, it's a health hazard. Also like they said in the video, $60 for one night yet they can get a 4* hotel for $30 that is perfect for a night's sleep. How does that even make sense? I mean obviously this place doesn't get customers so they've hiked up the price to compensate but how are they still in business? I can guarantee people have left that place ill more often than not. Just baffles me how a hotel can be so filthy and grimey. I thought Gordon Ramsays Hotel Hell was bad but jeez, this is up there with the absolute worst of them.
I appreciate Chris's compulsions forces him to up the ante immediately after starting what's supposed to be a 'laid back' series of videos... never change Chris.

im still confused how so many attractions are just open and free to enter. and nobody destroys it. no vandals. this are the moments i think japan seems so peaceful.
That's one of the reasons I like Japan so much and wish the rest of the world was more like it ("more", not "exactly"). Vandalism just isn't a thing for the most part; there's nothing to gain and no pleasure to derive from it, so you just don't do it.
It's not entirely uncommon for roadside attractions, especially ones that are a single person's passion. I remember along route 66 there was stuff like that
That scarecrow village is something straight out of a horror movie. The kind where visitors disappear and a new scarecrow bearing a shocking similarity to them mysteriously appears around the same time.
Why have I only just discovered this channel?!?! This the content I have been desperately looking for, thanks guys for getting me through my depression on days I just want to binge watch. Love from the UK
Jesus... I'm not sure if it's because they were tired, but, I'm pretty sure that hotel room was making both Connor and Chris' eyes bloodshot. In another note we need more of this cynical, sarcastic and dry commentary by these two lads. Perhaps the only thing at the moment that makes me proud to be a Brit.
Makes me proud to be Irish, across the pond watching you Brits. But seriously even with the history between Ireland and Britain, I'm glad of the close ties especially with the humour and comedy. Brill.
The amount of times Connor said "fucking hell" really reminded me of Gordon Ramsay's 'Hotel Hell.' Where that was also all Gordon could say seeing those shitty hotels.
I read a comment with a really interesting theory. The theory was that this hotel is just there to be used by some criminal organization or Yakuza for money laundering purposes so they don't really care about the quality of the hotel and its cleanliness. They just care about it being there for the money laundering and nothing else.
If that constitutes a 5/10, what's a 1/10 look like? A blanket in an active sewage outflow pipe? - I like how Connor booked the room as a joke, but he was more than willing to immediately bitch out while Chris maintained his stoic Englishman's preference to suffer personal hardship than risk possibly being accused of 'making a fuss.'
@@Krazee9 Yeah, it is the place. It would been funny if May's doll got a cameo appearance in the video. He must be somewhere around in the school hall. Shame it's raining that time though to explore more.
I love rewatching these wacky weekend videos just for these zany little bursts of escapism. Even though we can't visit yet, they've really helped give the feeling of doing weird shit with your mates on holiday. Also, does anyone know what (presumably licensed) music Chris used in the edit in Nagoro from around the 08:00 minute mark?
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Chris's narration skills; this man is singlehandedly taking on the likes of Shakespeare himself. Bravo! Edit: Omg I've never got this many likes before, this was not expected!
Honestly, this has got me wanting to drop everything and fly over to Japan and explore Shikoku; plus the sequence with the music at 8:07 turns a haunting village into an amazing art piece with a strong message
Yeah, same here! Definitely added to my list of places I'd love to visit! Honestly as someone who loves small rural towns and villages and as an artist this place sounds incredible to visit and walk around in!
I love finding really cheap hotels in Japan, though I tend to look for a bit higher rating. Found a place in Osaka that's about $17 a night and is pretty amazing. Definitely staying there any time I'm in the city overnight. Also, just so you know, that's definitely not blood on the walls. If I had to guess, it's the leftover tar from cigarettes.
Maybe because there's only like 25 people currently living in that town? It's so small like people probably know exactly who threw a rubbish at the side of the street
When you talk about the depopulation that is taking place in Japan and in those villages specifically, I understand very well how the locals feel. I’m Italian, and our country is experiencing the same thing. Our population is shrinking and our villages are disappearing. The village where my grandad is from is mostly populated by old people and essentially abandoned by local administration. The sports centre, which once had a football them of their own, is now in terrible conditions. I personally live in a big city, so the dream reality of living in such a village gives me a strange feeling of nostalgia of something that is disappearing. The dolls that woman creates really make me feel all that loneliness.
I have to say, I really liked the fact that you guys didn't spend the whole time finding the scarecrows creepy, and talked a bit about their reasoning and the issues with depopulation. It is (as Connor put it) sad. each piece is clearly a labour of love and a show of what once was, and it's hauntingly interesting but also a bit of a somber sight.
Hours of sleep deprivation and pain=awful Watching the hotel roast then the room and under the bed= temporarily made it go away and i actually was laughing. Another job well done
Given the amount of time you spent in the room, the time you arrived, the disheveled bedsheets you left behind, and the camera equipment you brought inside, I can only imagine what they thought you two were doing in there… Also we’d appreciate the full video on onlyfans.
As a hotel worker I can 100% confirm this is what we assume and we completely know you're lying when people check out early and give some bullshit excuse about why they have to rush off. Haaa
Oh wauw - a gay joke - Christ that's SO funny HAHAHAHA. Somebody insinuating to straight men, that they might be gay, just never cease to be hilarious. Not even in 2021 🤦
@@11laila11... Not a gay joke. We hotel workers laugh and time hetero couples too. Those who book a night, come in for 30minutes and then make up some excuse why they had to leave. We know.
I think it's a fair trade: you drive Connor in the car, Connor drives you insane. Also, this is less of a "Wacky Weekend" and more a setup for a horror movie. Storm of the Century, the Bridge of Dread, the Village of the Dolls, the Hotel of Horror... are there any horror tropes you missed? Edit: that hotel room looks like the building has been abandoned for about a year. I mean that literally, I've seen recently abandoned buildings that looked better maintained than that.
Honestly, at this point in time, it feels like that hotel mainly makes money from people doing that kind of challenge, asking themselves "how bad can it be?"...
Your music choice for the scarecrow village is f-ing emaculate. An easy approach would have been to go for a horror vibe, but I think you found the perfect balance of melancholy and former glory. Absolute work of art and respectful to the intent.

The Japanese government has a crisis task force working around the clock to clean up that hotel room.
NATO has deployed it's troops to clean up that hotel.
Japanese PM Suga resigned because that hotel was not clean enough.
Isn't the department of health legally obliged to burn the place down?
At least they removed the body outlines after the police finished!
@about you Shut up and return to whatever self promoting realm you came from.

My first thought as well!
Natsuki would've strangled Chris if he made him go the creepy village

"Why me?"
I love Conor's turn around from "to me making you suffer is worth more than any discomfort I suffer" to trying to convince Chris to leave and volunteering to do the checkout
The character development man..
I also rewatch his videos alot, I'm going to japan in April, and honestly his videos gives me ideas I kinda wanna try out xD
I can never have an original experience
@@garrett1433 So jealous you're going, I hope to someday. Would you go to the scarecrow village? :)
Mold is no joke. My brother and I lived in a house for three years without knowing about the mild mold problem, and a year later we’re still recovering from the awful effects it has had on our bodies (like, we couldn’t figure out what was wrong with us for the longest time, and only like the tenth doctor figured it out)
Good god, sorry to hear that! If you don't mind me asking, what kind of health issues did it lead to?
@@AbroadinJapan you may have difficulty breathing, skin rashes or irritation, coughing, red eyes from itchiness, etc
If you have an allergic reaction to mold, it's not pleasant to say the least-, even long term can cause a lot of problems involving your muscles and nerves
Good thing you didnt stay there for long!

And we love em for it
Somehow the funniest thing I took from this was the staff being "mildly angry" at you for trying to check in after midnight. I felt that.
It's not just migration in this case, it's also villages literally dying out, because the population is shrinking.
Yeah I think it's Connor's background that made this even more poignant to him.
I prefer living in that kind of place, quiet and peaceful
Connor- "I want to make chris suffer"
Also Connor
"What is this!?"
8:30 I want a ghibli movie inspired by this town where the scarecrows come alive at night
connor complaining more than chris even though he booked the room is the funniest part of this 😭
British always complaining, if I'm not mistaken
I love how the tables turn and Connor is the one suffering and Chris is the one laughing at his expense
I didn't realise Chris could get even more British until he refused to leave the hotel just because "it would be awkward"... peak British my man
Yeah, I mean, I kinda get it. I don't like to be complain over smaller issues. But the dirt under the one bed alone would have been enough to go to the reception and ask my money back. This hotel must be violating health regulations the state it is in...
Commonwealth countries understood this statement
I don't like complaining to much myself but that was unacceptable and gross. I would demand a refund and not make up a lie as to why I'm leaving
Aussie here, honestly the same… I’d probably still reluctantly leave in the end but I wouldn’t ask for my money back, I’d feel too bad.
The staff was probably so nice because they didn't have to do the other tedious parts to their job, such as cleaning the rooms. 😂
I'm not sure they've ever cleaned that room.
The marks on the walls are probably what happens when a room that smells strongly of cigarette smoke gets damp and the nicotine runs down the wall. Those walls have not been cleaned in years.
Also based on the matress, blood too 😂
Or drip marks from trying to scrub the blood out of the what was once white walls and they just said fuck it, good enough.
Lol
Yaa
@manny I should mention that I work in the resort industry and watch a lot of Spaulding Decon as cleaning motivation 😅
(Thankfully I don't believe there's been any deaths at my resort, at least not any that I know of.
A silent horror film would be more better if someone did
Silent Hill, anyone?
I wanna manga like thissss that’d be cooll
Bruh, just imagine being at the gymnasium at night in the middle of a storm. Lightning flickers through the windows illuminating the scarecrows with nothing but the sound of rain and the taps of your footsteps as you walk. Pure nightmare fuel.
Not gonna lie, a huge typhoon, a dangerous bridge, a creepy town with more scarecrows than humans and finally a moldy and bloody hotel room where you might not wake up sounds like a pretty cool start for a horror movie. Or a Call of Cthulhu campaign.
Yesss. The typhoon destroys the bridge and you're trapped in the town.

The west coast of the us looks like that too, like near Oregon.
@Scorch Like the entire Alpine region, including Switzerland, northern Italy and so on. People are so lucky living there.
It made me really sad as well, reminded me of season 1 of The Leftovers when they were making mannequins of the people who had disappeared.

Leaving was probably the wise choice.
Mold can make some people sicker than others, and it is quite drastic varying person to person.
Some people will be sick almost immediately, others can handle it for months/years.
Connor did right leaving, if he's mold-sensitive it can make you extremely ill.
Ironic since he chose it for the gag
@@jase276 super ironic lmfao
Exactly. I was mildly surprised that Chris was even considering staying.
I thought Gordon Ramsays Hotel Hell was bad but jeez, this is up there with the absolute worst of them.

im still confused how so many attractions are just open and free to enter. and nobody destroys it. no vandals. this are the moments i think japan seems so peaceful.
That's one of the reasons I like Japan so much and wish the rest of the world was more like it ("more", not "exactly"). Vandalism just isn't a thing for the most part; there's nothing to gain and no pleasure to derive from it, so you just don't do it.
@@Macc_ I mean, unless you’re fighting back against a tyrannical government, you shouldn’t gain pleasure in doing it anyway…
The fact you think that destroying things is even a possibility is the reason things are that way else where.

The amount of times Connor said "fucking hell" really reminded me of Gordon Ramsay's 'Hotel Hell.' Where that was also all Gordon could say seeing those shitty hotels.
Also the “oh god, look at THAT”
Oh easy I guess this is good news hotel actually
The fact this hotel still managed to get 5/10 astounds me
I read a comment with a really interesting theory. The theory was that this hotel is just there to be used by some criminal organization or Yakuza for money laundering purposes so they don't really care about the quality of the hotel and its cleanliness. They just care about it being there for the money laundering and nothing else.
"This is a room. rubbish"
