  • EASTER TRADITIONS
The Easter break is finally here, which means you'll probably be seeing lots of chocolate eggs, bunnies and hot cross buns around. But there's a lot more to it than that. For Christians, Easter is one of the most important holidays. Good Friday represents the day Jesus Christ died on the cross. It's also the day when hot-cross buns are traditionally eaten and Easter Sunday is a celebration of when he was resurrected. So where does the Easter bunny come into it? Well, some people think that Easter actually started as a pagan festival in the Northern Hemisphere, where the Goddess of fertility 'Eostre' was celebrated to mark the arrival of spring. She has a sacred animal which is a rabbit, or a hare to be more specific. Hares are pretty good at breeding and represent new life. As for the eggs, they also represent new life. Eventually someone realised they could make a lot of money by making them chocolate. Here in Australia you might even see a different animal pop up around Easter, the bilby. You see, rabbits are an introduced species here. Bilbies on the other hand, are native and kind of look like bunnies but are endangered. So chocolate companies have been selling choccy bilbies since the 90's to help support them.
    VOICE TO PARLIAMENT
The Liberal Party has announced it's not going to support an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Opposition leader Peter Dutton says while he supports recognition of First Nations people in the constitution. He thinks the voice would be divisive and wouldn't actually address the issues faced by First Nations people. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called the decision misleading and says it will make it more difficult for the referendum to pass.
    JACINDA ARDERN
Jacinda Ardern has delivered an emotional final speech in New Zealand's parliament. The former prime minister who became leader in 2017 announced she was stepping down in January, saying that she had "no more in the tank".
    CHEERLEADING
Cheerleading's soon going to be an Olympic sport and here in Australia it's getting bigger all the time. Thomas met up with Altitude, a team in Adelaide, who are preparing to take their skills to Hawaii. If you don't know what cheerleading is, it's a bit like a combination of dance, gymnastics and a little bit of circus. A lot of people typically think cheerleaders are just on the sidelines cheering on sporting teams, but really it's a massive team sport and there are big national competitions.
    RAMADAN CAT
A sneaky sneaky cat climbed on a sheikh delivering Ramadan prayers. After patting the sneaky little guy, it perched on the sheikh's shoulder while he completed his recitation seemingly unphased.
    MICHAEL JORDAN SNEAKERS
A pair of sneakers worn by none other than Michael Jordan during his final NBA season in 1998 are going up for auction. The sneaky sneakers are expected to go for between 2 and 4 million US dollars, which would break the world record for any pair of sneakers ever sold publicly.
    JUICE MISSION
The European Space Agency has unveiled it's latest spacecraft called JUICE which will sneak, or rather blast off, into space next week. Its mission is to fly all the way to Jupiter to learn more about the planets three icy crusted moons.
