I got an MPA and have worked for the US federal government for the last 17 years. My advice to you is to specialize in a particular area and supplement your degree with a certification of some sort. But more importantly, and this is where most people fail, you need to develop your network and figure out how to make yourself stand out and do not think that a degree alone will help you do so.
I'm currently a Public Administration Major and will be Graduating in 2024 and Later pursuing a Master's Degree in Public Administration. Thank you so much for your career and information contribution I receive this information whole heartily.
I graduated may 2024 with a bachelors in English literature and a minor in sociology. my advisor recommended i get an MPA and now here i am looking at what jobs i can get and what I can do for the future! Thank you for this video!
I’m graduating in December with a bachelor’s in Criminology Sociology. Now thinking of a MPA then possibly a Doctoral in Public Administration. I started late. Or finished late.
Am so sorry! Hopefully you can connect with an academic advisor at your school and create a career plan as well as connect with others who have graduated from your major at your school.
This was a great video. I’m actually looking to get my masters in public administration, but my undergrad is in communication. Would you be able to help me get prepped for a masters program by recommending some books?
I'm also currently a Public Management student with public administration as majors,I actually want to focus more on policy but saw I can do a masters in public administration and policy and came across this video while trying to find research on it.what would your advice be on doing a masters in public administration and policy?
Shana, doing a masters in public administration and policy provides you a unique and comprehensive opportunity to delve into both the administrative and analytical sides of policy. This holistic approach is grounded in the perspective that policy challenges are fluid, interconnected, and global. This perspective will give you the tools you need to drive change at the local, national, and international levels. This will be extremely marketable. Most students in my experience who pursued this were interested in academic careers, although some find work as researchers at think tanks, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Go for it!!!
Thank you so much.i really fell Inlove with the policy part but was a bit confused between focusing on public administration or public policy but it would really be great to get the best of both in one course.thank you again
Hi Maria thanks for watching. Yes there is a difference. Public administration focuses on producing public policies and coordinating public programs on the other hand, Public management is a sub-discipline of public administration that involves conducting managerial activities in public organizations. I hope this helps!
Anytime a professional like yourself wants to grow I think it's a great plan. Just make sure you are looking at the current job market for your area to make the right choice for employment after you graduate. Never be afraid to work backwards.

Good day Ma'am, I just wanna ask if the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies is aligned to Public Administration? I'm planning to take a master's degree but i'm confused what will I choose if Educational Management or Public Administration.. please help me
Educational Management is very different from Public Administration. Both these focus areas are lucrative. I suggest meeting with your university advisor to discuss options. A smart approach is to ask your university to inform you of where individuals form both degrees have ended up. This way you can see what you can also do with both in the job market.
Tamira that is exciting! Feel free to check the information bar for useful resources as you prepare for the degree. Keep us posted! I think it is a good degree choice.
Great question. I suggest going back to your university and meeting with a career advisor there. They have data from all students in your major and where they have ended up. This can be a very good way for you to know which employers have hired your major form your school and then you can network with them for a job.
I'm restricted to major in Public administration meanwhile I have little knowledge about government and politics. please is that what Public administration is about?...... I'll be glad to hear your feedback.
public admin usually means the act of actually carrying out policy. public policy is more researching. Public affairs is generally a mix of the two. They all involve government.
Richmond, Public administration is a field in which student learn how to serve communities to advance the common good and effect positive change. Public administration students end up being professionals that are equipped with skills to manage at all levels of government (local, state, and federal) as well as nonprofit organizations. I suggest taking a look at your college manual to review the degree and its requirements. The catalogue at your school will list all the classes to take and what will be needed to complete the degree.
