    Thanks to your video related to advanced phalaenopsis care, it made me discover more orchids outside of what I knew before! Also, picked up new interest to collect summer blooming orchids & obtained the hybrid seedlings that who knows what the flower will look like 😂 and purchased a vanda for experimentation to culture in appartement

    I'm 35 too and work full time as a doctor.. took on yet another role at my hospital this year supervising all the residents. So I'm flat out ... but feel so committed to my 'chids too! Lucky I don't have any actual kids at the moment - just a partner and two dogs ... I do feel guilty sometimes how much time my orchid hobby takes up, but I love it so much! 2019 resolution to balance out my time a bit better. Good luck with your flasks... Keen to see how it all pans out. Oh, and don't worry about long videos, I reckon most ppl really enjoy them :) . Happy new year!

      Jacolyn - check out my video on “Advanced Phal Care” - the experiments I talk about in this video I summarize in the advanced care video. For more flowers: cool nights (16C) for at least 8 weeks, up to 16 weeks. Consistent watering and care, and dialed in nutrients (including pH adjustment)...and good light is essential, but your big windows should be plenty

    I totally understand what you mean when you describe "hoarding". I have been collecting orchids for about 5 years and it's been a challenge for me to say "no" to buying more when I've pretty much reached my capacity now...I really have to scale down to the orchids I really love, and give the others away or sell...it's really hard to resist purchasing new orchids, and I guess the only positive is that I have been much more selective in the last year...

      Thanks very much for your website. I read through it and it seems you are doing very well with your seedlings. Don't forget to make video when any of them bloomed. I don't know if you know about this other fellow you tuber (ua-cam.com/channels/MTdCSCsu6vgflO6sJ0iY1g.html ) , she has done de-flasking and bloomed hers as well. Few years ago I did a course at Kew Garden (London ,UK) about how to grow orchids from seed, which included the de-flasking as well, and as far as I remember, they also recommended a very dilute solution of ordinary bleach as fungicide , once you took them out of flask. I haven't personally done it but it can work ( just a suggestion). I will visit your v-log to see their progress. Thanks.

    I had started to use seaweed Emulsion fertilizer on my orchids and I think that in addition to micronutrients and epsom salts have really helped my orchids besides regular fertilizer for orchids. Also Rick on Rick's orchids said he puts a couple pinches of Epsom pelleted lime on his orchids once a month. I started to do that and I've noticed a difference and how green and health from the leaves are. But the watering sort of got away from me was more Sunshine with the warmer weather and I think I should have upped my watering schedule because I noticed the leaves not being is firm. I'm also using a higher nitrogen fertilizer like you just mentioned around 11 minutes because they're growing I just found one regular Miracle-Gro that's 24 8 16 and I think I'm going to use that because the first number is nitrogen and the last number I think helps the roots I know the middle number helps the blooms but they're not blooming. Anyhow thank you so much for taking the time to make your videos. And I'm still wondering about that phalaenopsis that hugely oh my gosh that's a must be a hog when it comes to fertilizer. Also I just added the Cal Mag to my fertilizing schedule Rick said orchids are calcium Hogs. I hope he's all right I noticed he hasn't been posting as often I guess you know who I'm talkin about anyhow take care my new Orchid friend

    I'm a bit surprised you aren't using seaweed/kelp extract. I only started using it a couple of months ago, not soon enough to see any real difference with the orchids--but--I used some on my rose bushes and whoa, flower count, size and color are all improved. I have seen some new root activity with the kelp on orchids that didn't have great roots (for ages), we'll see how it goes. Hope you had a nice holiday season, wishing you a great New Year, see you on the flip side.

    What is the name of that huge phalaenopsis I've never seen one that enormous! Of course I am new to orchids because I never knew how to take care of them so they always died but after watching Carolyn's Channel in Canada only her site is called jacolyn orchids a combination of her and her husband's name Jack. I've also watched Rick of Rick's orchids in Alabama here in the United States and he taught me a lot also. Carolyn gave me the courage to start with orchids and also got me addicted to them and Rick taught me how to care for them and how the nutrients work. I also get the cold treatment with orchids because I was ready to put some of my orchids outside for the summer but the air conditioner was turned on it caused a lot of them to re Spike. Then I didn't want to put them outside because Carolyn said the bees will get at them and then the flowers will die cuz they'll be pollinated. So I hate to put them outside but eventually they need some summer vacation I guess. If you'd like to see my window of orchids you can go to Kathleen Murphy and add the word orchids to the UA-cam search engine and you'll see my beautiful orchids a couple different videos about them. Carolyn suggested starting a UA-cam channel so I could show her my orchids and then have a history for my own benefit. You did this at the beginning of the year and now you have a thousand subscribers so you've doubled in 6 months. If I double in six months I won't even have a hundred teehee but I have more than orchids on my site I love my house plants orchids are new to me and I love gardening and I have a jungle outside here in Hagerstown Maryland. I live an hour and a half from Washington DC or an hour to have football the board. I noticed you had posted on Carolyn's new post and I had subscribed to you a while back but you hadn't showed up on my Newsfeed so I looked you up again. I'm going to have to keep looking you up because you have a lot of good information here for me to learn more about my orchids and then share it with others

    Hi there! I love your goals and I think it's good to think back on stuff we did last year and what we want to improve in 2019. My goals are quite similar: creating better quality video's, improving the growth off my orchids (they are doing good but can always do better) and breeding. I already pollinated some phals and did the research online. So now we wait.. And I def would try stem propagation, I should not be more difficult, just add some BAP to the propagation mix ;) PS: I'm afraid to join more facebook-groups, my space is already very limited :) Love your channel!

    Interesting retrospect on your 2018 orchid culture. Being in Canada I sympathize with you on the lack of orchid buying opportunities. We have just a handful of trusted vendors. Growing flasks is a big risk reward project.
    Truthfully, except for a few more phrags, a zygopetalum that doesn't hate me, and some compact scented Vandas, I'm fairly satisfied with my 125+ orchid collection.
    I will visit those 2 orchid web sites because I really miss discussing orchids, and simply finding others to trade sell or give away orchids.
    My goals for 2019? Simplify my watering routine. My Saturday mornings are monopolized by my orchids. Secondly, I will immediately repot and treat any new orchid coming in to my home. I'm almost pest free and that saves lots of time! Perhaps transfer all my orchids to semi hydro if possible. If not, the either semi water culture or full water culture. Again, it's to simplify my routine so that I'm not afraid to go away on vacation for a week. The goal of doubling the number of flowers is a good one, achievable with happy growing mature orchids.
    Wishing you great blooms and good flask growth in 2019!

    • @ResQuetzal
      @ResQuetzal 5 років тому

      I buy mostly from Cloud Orchids, which wind up more often seedlings that are 3 years from blooming. Once in a while I'll visit Paradis Des Orchidees here in Laval and bring something home something in spike like my Phrag longifolium $$$$. I'll buy at the spring show if there is something I can't resist but I despise buying bare root from the Taiwan and Ecuador vendors because, even with a set of viable roots, the orchids sometimes just don't want to adapt. In all fairness, the Vanda genus is the one giving me the least casualties. Blooming them is also working out well so they are the surprise of 2018.
      Out west you have considerably more vendor options (with cheaper transport) than me living in Montreal.

      Yes, I’m playing with a new video editor and the transitions shortened the clips so much and cut off some of my lines :(. I’ll work on that...I’m undecided if I’ll keep using Kinmaster for editing; It’s a bit wonky and I had to re edit the video twice!
      Anyways, regarding Macodes petola...give it good light, good airflow, and ample water and nutrients and I think you’ll find it easier to grow than in a terrarium.

    Coel. pandurata has wonderful pendulous spikes, so if you have the space, put it on a pedestal stand and use the plant in and out of flower as a feature. 😊
    Just blame "The Orchid Fairies" for the plant increase 🤣
    Feel sort guilty... I live in tropical Queensland, Australia, so get to grow outside all the amazing tropical orchids... but oddly enough, I have always been fascinated by the terrestrials of more temperate zones.
    You are actually around the right age to start orchid breeding because it is such a long-term commitment to plants. Most 20 year olds are still enjoying life and are not yet "settled", 30's tend to be focused on children if they have any or career, 40's you are starting to look to diversify your life interests...

      @HerebutNot  5 років тому

      I love the green and black flowers of Coel. pandurata - I’m very excited to see it bloom. It was the first plant on my “wishlist” back in the start of my orchid hobby.
      I would love to grow outside...I think the sun has much more to offer than LEDs. Haha. But for now 🤷🏼‍♂️ and I suppose you make a very good point about orchid breeding. It’s a good time to be doing it.
      Thanks for the orchid love. Have a great New Year!

    What books/ magazines would you recommend?
    I'm just beginning my journey in learning how to tend to orchids.

    • @HerebutNot
      @HerebutNot  5 років тому +1

      I find a lot of books and magazines are...not very clear about care and culture of orchids. Most talk about where individual species are from and not so much about their care. That may be because care largely comes down to your climate and other conditions...I certainly know the reason I started writing on my blog, was because I couldn't find that type of info.
      If I had to choose, I'd say one of the best books I've read is an older book called, "Culture of the Phalaenopsis Orchid
      " by Bob Gordon
      www.abebooks.com/book-search/title/culture-phalaenopsis-orchid/author/gordon-bob/
      You can still find used copies online.
      Other places you can get orchid content is:
      - American Orchid Society Magazine
      - Orchid Species Magazine
      - International Phalaenopsis Association magazine
      But i warn you, most of these magazines are orchid porn and the care and culture of orchids are short nuggets of info in each edition.

    Great video and input! New to your channel from orchaholics anonymous - subbed! You should stop cutting yourself off mid sentence with the transitions though :)

      Thanks Sean! Yeah, I was testing a new editor and unlike the previous one it doesn’t blend the audio on transition. Sorry!

    Hi Dustin, you say you want to help others, but I see very few replies from you, any reason? I’ve read all your blogs and watched most of your videos and I truly am jealous of your collections, but I’m happy that you have managed to grow these orchid in this Calgary weather. That’s exactly where I need your knowledge, since I share the same weather.
    If you do get a chance to reply , please do write a line.

      Sorry, did you have an orchid or plant care question that you need an answer to?

      Thank you for responding back, sorry if I sound a bit too pushy. I got too too too excited when I heard that You are from Calgary.
      My question is, wait this is still my first question, there’ll be more, first of all I have an orchid with just one leaf, how do I know if it’s going to survive? Second thing, please tell me about how you manage to provide a good weather surrounding your orchid, with it being so dry around and humidity being low?
      Is it possible to get in touch with you? Don’t mind, I see you have a lot of knowledge and I agree there are many out there with that kind of knowledge. But being from the same place and close by, I feel you would be able to help more. I feel if I could somehow show you my indoor garden😊, you can help more by seeing it personally and guiding me appropriately.

      Mother Patel - no worries. I try to respond to most of the question. Some slip through the cracks, or I just don’t have the answer. Regarding your questions:
      1. Single leaf orchid - not ideal. It would be difficult for even me to bring a plant back from one leaf. You may want to dispose of that plant and try again with a healthier specimen. Best-case scenario, you save the plant-it will still be 2-4 years before it flowers again.
      2. As you know, our humidity sucks. I don’t fight that-I just make sure my plants get watered before they get too dry, that they get good light, and that the roots are healthy and happy. Humidity (in my opinion, despite what others think), is mostly inconsequential for the easier orchids like phals, phrags, and paphs.
      3. I appreciate you wanting to learn more, unfortunately I don’t have that sort of time to offer one-on-one coaching. That’s why I write the blog content and create videos-to help share perspectives, but still keep this hobby manageable for my personal time. I hope you understand.
      To get you started, I’m going to share a link with you that covers in detail my perspectives and care advice for growing orchids in Calgary.

    the fact you care about the plants just shows youre a compassionate cultivator. im sorry youre out of space- maybe you can find a more efficient way to keep your plants- theres nothing wrong with loving what you have.
