I just picked up a used one of these for $450. I wanted to use it in combination with my Headrush Pedalboard. I used a Headrush 108 FRFR for a year and wasn’t super impressed with it. I tried a few different Celestion IRs also. With the Headrush, it’s a perfect companion. Simple and lets the Headrush dictate the EQ. With a 4 cable method you can get so many different sounds. I’ve also run the emulated amp head from Headrush into just the power amp and it sounds great.
I’ve had this amp for about four or five years now! To my taste, absolutely best amp I’ve ever owned! I have been able to keep up with a full band, but I really wish it had just a bit more headroom! It could be miked and that would solve that problem, but it still would be nice to have a little more headroom! I run the master cranked, to get power tube working hard, and dial the input to the amount of distortion I want! Also, I live in a small apartment, and being loud at home is Not an option, I’m able to dial in killer sounds below tv volume! A Really great amplifier, sounds like a mini Marshall plexi
You use the vol on the guitar and have the master cranked. wow not much distorsion if you play at low vol then? I must try. Have to use a pedal or 2 i reckon otherwise, - or do u mean the the gain/preamp on the amp? Its a loud amp. I can not even crank my HT1 at home. So loud trough a real cab. hell even the small 8 inch speaker is loud.
How is the sustain on this amp? I had one of the studio 10 6l6 versions and although it sounded great the sustained died off pretty quickly. That's usually due to the cheaper output Transformers they put in a smaller amps.
A little late, but I have a chance to pick up a used one of these amps. Question is: Loud enough to gig with for clean/slightly overdriven country/classic rock&roll/blues (small area) Thanks! Good looking Gibson, btw
Hahaha, i have the KT88. What do you all say now? I bought it a couple of days ago. Looks brand new. The dude i bought it from had only played it at home. Yaaaaaay! The speaker is just fine but i also use a 212 v30 cab and a old Marshall 412 cab. Great sound. Can not play it so loud so the i reckon it dosent matter much between 6l6, el34 or kt88. EDIT: i think the KT88 with its slightly different look is the best looking ofc.Haha mine looks more classy :) The other looks like the HT1 and HT5 combos. I also have 2 small ht1., one with reverb and one without. Also good amps.
Thanks for the demo! I am a bit puzzled by the Gain - Master selection as that sounds really loud on mine and not as clean. Do you adjust the guitar volume and tone to make it work?
dear Jim, your reviews are ALWAYS the best and most complete on the tube, no exceptions, and your playing is absolutely astounding! Love your touch and your musical taste. As I'm very interested in buying an Artisan 10 Anniversary Edition, with very few reviews on the web, it seems to have exactly the same features as this new Studio 10 EL34, even the cabinet size... having found it priced 100€ lower than Studio 10 here in Italy, I'd like to understand if they are the same amp under a different colored dress.. it seems to me as if Blackstar threw it out as soon as Artisan sold out (1000 amp limited edition), it sounds right to you?.. Now I have a nice Yamaha THR10, but want some real tubes to play with real pedals (Keeley Compressor plus, Xotic Soul Driven, etc..) and I've ever been in love with EL34s sound (having them in my HIFI Copland CT401), even when not cranked. I play (single coils and humbuckers) mostly at home and at some rehearsals, and I read that DI output is post power tubes (not post pre amp as usual), so better to be heard with headphones / recorded, someone could confirm how it sounds? Thank again Jim and to all who would contribute...
@@jasonshackelford2292 dear Jason thanks for your words, really appreciated! Actually I've picked it up 3 days ago as I managed to try it in a shop and immediately fell in love with this little smooth beast.. it sounds even better than expected, now it's all to my fingers and heart!! have fun, bye!
I asked blackstar about that and this is their response..."Each amplifier is biased in a specific manner to get the most out of the valve fitted, so if you are intended to swap the valve out for another model the voicing may be slightly effecteed."
No. It's more than adjusting the bias as well. There are other components within the circuit. Also, if you don't have firm knowledge/experience, it's highly possible to be electrocuted by the inner guts. Fair warning .
10 watts in a valve amp is more than enough for gigging, you might not think so because of the drummer, but when you put a mic in front of it, that would be loud enough to hang with a drummer. the only deal breaker i can see is, it's only a 10 watt tube amp, so there's only so much headroom you can play with. that being said, this amp would be too loud to use in an apartment.
Fantastic demonstration, showing all pickup positions on cleans. Thanks
A great amp with a lot of different tonal possibilities.
From Chic to AC/DC and everything in between
TOP AMP-TOP SOUND-TOP DEMO !!!!
Love this amp! I have a Celestion V Type speaker in mine and a high gain Tung sol 12ax7...It is amazing both clean and OD.

Came here with the intent of buying a Blackstar, came out with the intention to buy a Strat and a Blackstar.

As i am considering this amp, is it loud enough?

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the demo!
I was hoping to see the gain it has with HBs without the boost function.. so..

Marshall-esk...without the fizz!
is this hybrid amp?

I have the AE Artisan 10 and it is the same amp. LOVE it! You will not be disappointed.

Lets say if you bought one model and later decided you wish you would’ve gotten the other model could you just change the tubes?
Had the same question myself..
Also, if you're cranking the power section, does it sound any different to other tubes?
The tone stack is the same so..
I asked blackstar about that and this is their response..."Each amplifier is biased in a specific manner to get the most out of the valve fitted, so if you are intended to swap the valve out for another model the voicing may be slightly effecteed."
