    I my country, some journalists once decided to test the “my 5 year old could do that” argument. The got some “art” from a local kindergarden girl, announced an exhibition, hyped it up and gave it a compelling backstory about being from some anonymous super talented international artist.
    Turns out you actually CAN get art critics and the art community in general to hail the crayon drawings of a 5 year old as genius level social commentary.
    The reviews they wrote are funny AF when you know they're writing about a childs drawing.

    This is not even an exaggeration. I was on cruise a few years ago and decided to check out an art auction and boy oh boy was it a shock to me what passed for high quaity art.
    There was this one collection (Peter Max) that looked like it was done by a 6th grader and yet it sold for the highest amounts. But the creative artist who did awesome art on metal by a heating process and look s majestic sold for a fraction of the Peter Max paintings. I left so confused how such beauty and creativity could be outshined by wacky doodles.

    I always mention this example but the stand out absurdity came when I did Graphic Design in secondary and there's an art piece called 'An Oak Tree' which is a glass of water on a shelf with a wall of text. It is to this day probably the most baffling piece of 'art' I've ever seen because I make that shit every morning but no ones putting my cups in a museum. The only reason artists like this succeed is because they know how to be needlessly pretentious and people who are equally so, who happen to have a lot of money buy into it

      Mind you, just because you see a piece in a museum doesn't mean the artist is rich. You don't necessarily make a lot of money when exhibiting in a museum. That is if you are not super famous. Also in a museum art isn't usually sold, that would be a gallery. Or an auction. I suppose the more famous you get, the bigger the money streams you can enter, and the easier it is to get into contact with the whole money laundering thing. But at low levels, (most artists) not a chance.

Came across one very small one with a bunch of paintings down a small hallway that led to a very messy kitchen with half eaten food, a can of baked beans half empty, a knife, a couch... bc there was no attempt at closing it off as a staff area we kept making jokes that it was an 'installation art piece' while taking crude pictures and fooling around. As someone that studied art pretty deeply, this isn’t exactly wrong, but there’s certainly a lot of history and theory to consider… that being said, the outside perception of the art world kinda gets forgotten and glossed over by people within it. It’s easy to forget that a lot of it is in fact a way to store wealth at the end of the day.

    • @thaddeusmarcuscheeleyjr.786
      @thaddeusmarcuscheeleyjr.786 6 місяців тому

      Was gonna say that alot of it's just a way to launder money between the wealthy. Like, regardless of the theory behind a work and the statement it may seemingly be trying to make, do you really believe some rich guy out there buys a giant 50x64 canvas with a single splash of orange paint on one corner actually thinks it's worth that much? Hell, no. They bought it for 78,000 because they know the artist and they're both part of a group that has wealthy socialites in it that want to preserve their wealth. Does that mean the artist's intention is untrue? Not necessarily, but rational people don't throw large sums of money to what can be amounted to luxury vanity items(not all color theorist art and colorist art is vanity, but this bullshitter type artist does exist in the postmodern art world and they do sell work. This is why).

    This is exactly what it feels like. The thing about art is that it’s everything and everywhere. It’s subjective, it can mean anything to anyone. Build enough hype around a piece and an artist and it’s consensus gentium. Build enough hype around anything and it becomes consensus gentium. Celebrities are used to influence a crowd because they already have power. Some well marketed movies sell better because of their marketing and exposure to the world and they may also contain “Hollywood” elements. Marketing for a company may be really good, appealing commercials, people “give it a try” because everyone else is doing it, even if they don’t continue to use the service, their contribution still keeps the business afloat. People like abstract art because they can apply their own meaning to it, when looking at it, it is a subjective experience different for everyone. All art is like that but the more abstract, the more room there is to apply any meaning you want it to have which means you can also apply monetary value. If I was a nobody and splashed a bucket of red paint on a canvas and tried selling it for a hundred thousand dollars, people would start to wonder about it, they would first say that’s ridiculous but then they would wonder why I valued this ridiculous piece for that much, it must mean something. So they dig deep and think more and more about it and so on. The more visually specific an artwork is, the less people are able to apply their own meaning to it. Doesn’t mean that it’s worth less or people won’t find value in it, it just means less people are likely to “like” or acquire it. Just my two cents 😊

    On a serious note, I’d argue that the grey hoodie character type plays a big part of why this sort of stuff continues, because grey hoodie man didn’t even step up when he could have gotten the dog painting for FREE.
    In real life, I want to say that people gotta be more vocal of their tastes unless they actually like the sort of things that the “majority” of people gravitate towards. I mean, rich and popular people can simply hire hype men to act like they support their work to socially manipulate others into wanting to ride the bandwagon. And unless they were “hired”/bribed into being a supporter, I’d say that people should AT THE VERY LEAST anonymously support the things they truly like instead of letting it fade into nothingness

    Wow, that red square canvas is really giving me flashbacks to Damian Hirst's dot paintings. Like, sure, feels a bit pop as decoration, and it's decent if your room's theme matches it. But at that price tag?? Hell to the no. Not worth it.
    I get why some conceptual art pieces can get expensive and famous, but this ain't it. I'd rather find a kinetic sculpture that's beautiful and I know well enough the amount of expertise needed to create it.

    Art "connoisseurs" are always fun to laugh at for me. Modern art for the most part is a joke. Someone can make something on the level of "the garden of earthly desires" or "the raft of Medusa" and get very little recognition. Someone can literally put a word with crazy font on a canvas and sell that for over 100k. Much like the American diet, these artistic fields are filled with junk food. A market of mass produced bs that "experts" tell you to just shut up and consume product. But hey, art is subjective so what do I know.

    That's pretty on point, a skilled artist can build up a fan base in the 300-1500 range; but if they aren't repped by someone who has been deemed to have the authority to bring someone to the next level then it's very unlikely they'll rise above that level. Before building up a fan base, what used to get 100-400 now has no demand in part due to cheap copyists in China (some legit skilled artists and some just print on canvas and cover in crackle glaze.)

    Art is tax deductible in many financial situations, and has the opportunity to greatly appreciate in value. This makes it a worthy investment tool for the rich, and they are propping up the industry they profit from since it functions as a legal tax haven.
    Don't hate the player, hate the game.
