So glad to see someone from Sweden make a video about this. I don't have the words to describe my own feelings when playing Generation Zero but it really did just feel like something else. I was born in the 90s but rural Sweden never changed much in the decade between so going inside and seeing all these interiors, hearing all the sounds, it really just hit me different. Sick video.
I wanted to add that the chapter about Jantelagen was so profound. Something I think about a lot. But never in that way.
As a Dane, I always understood Janteloven "You're no better than anyone else" to be interpreted as "You shouldn't take those around you for granted, just because they're not useful to you or interest you." and "Don't forget your roots or your past, they made you whom you are today." In the sense that if you think you're better than everyone else, you can easily alienate those around you, and they won't be there to support you when you need them.
I liked generation zero as an American because of the story telling that you could see in every home and place where people made their last stands. I was absolutely seething at the machines at one point and was coming up with names to call them 😅
Americans can respect an American sense of resistance most anywhere, after all it's how our country came to be. I felt the same anger, the worst was when I _finally_ found a resistance base only to see it get shelled five seconds before I could reach it...

I am not Swedish. I have never been to Sweden. I was born well after the 90s. I love this game! I have played it for hours upon hours. My plundra (the storage box) is almost filled to the brim with tens of thousands of rounds of ammo and 5 crown weapons. At one point or another I have had at least 3 copies of each experimental weapon and at least 200 other guns. Generation Zero, Satisfactory, Scrap Mechanic, IKEA, the Carl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle, the Swedish K, and TONS of other things I love and enjoy are from Sweden. Someday I want to visit, and I find it strange that I express greater love for a country that I have never been too than it's citizens do for it. Also, the whole introverted nature of Sweden seems very nice to me.

We didn't really think much about how Swedes would think about the game other than the obvious familiarity. We we're more concerned with the "bet" we made that as long as we could recreate this love letter to our childhood with enough authenticity, that the world of Östertörn would feel enough of a "real place" even to players who were unfamiliar with Sweden in the 80s. Being developed by a tiny team with a tiny budget in a secluded corner of the office, it was always going to be driven by passion and nostalgia, but I think we got a bit more optimistic about that bet when we saw our expat colleagues (whether British, American or Romanian) feeling the passion too. But seeing how close to home the game hits with a lot of our Swedish players always warms my heart a bit extra. Because it is sharing something; a memory or notion that I guess is indescribable, but then somehow possible to convey in a virtual recreation. I think you put a lot of words to it in this video. Thank you!
I now feel a bit ashamed about the 17 on our "Vråken" models. We should of course have labeled them 23, after the F23 Överby airbase in the game.
Also, sorry to bust your location theory further, but Habo (or Hagaboda, as it was once known), is simply the place where our Art Director Daniel grew up ;) Having said that, I would say there is one place in Sweden that is probably more of a reference to Östertörn than any other - but obviously I can't tell you what it is! 😁

Love this game, I only have 120 hours but I come back to it every once in a while. Sure the mechanics and the story are quickly handled and finished but the game's atmosphere... there something about it... stranded in the wood, rain just start falling and a hunter howl in the distance.. that's jsut perfect.

As someone from Australia this game will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only because of the environment and gameplay but also because it shows you how other countries live and how different they are from yours. I saw the barn houses and thought to myself "wow I would love to live in these houses, they're so unique" and they were, I've never seen anything like it. Not only that but the foliage, it's so peaceful, and if it weren't for GZ I would never know what a Semla is (I haven't tried one yet but plan to.) Sweden's culture and way of living feel so alienating, but also gives you a warm feeling, in a way that I can't put to words. Also just wanted to say that your editing matched Generation Zero's ascetic to a fine point, well done and you did the game justice. No matter how much you critised it.
Speaking of stockholm, i think there is a horror game about it called "Cry of fear" also made by swedish person
I wanted to love this game more than I did. That said, even as an american with only limited experience with Sweden I can definitely say this game just has this vibe that I haven't found anywhere else, that I couldn't quite articulate myself. It's cool to see someone put that vibe in more concrete terms! I think about this game often so this video is a real treat.
I really don't understand how you haven't exploded into the mainstream yet. I took a leap on a really long video about Ace Combat after only playing Skies Unknown, and now I'm working through the entire series in canon order, all because of your video. I am in awe of the excruciating effort put into these videos and their amazing execution. This may not be the content you have always made, but you have certainly found something that works, and is distinctly your own. Keep up the excellent work!
I had always loved Ace Combat 7 but was put off by the lack of other modern titles and never bothered to delve further until I saw his video, and just like you it was what put me on track to finishing almost every single game in the franchise. I'm reliving that right now with Generation Zero as I write this, finishing the video made me immediately want to reinstall the game and give it another go.
This games atmosphere is so good I played all of the story missions in complete fear even despite being on the easiest difficulty
I am actually so happy and love watching Timmm's videos often as he always makes the best real camera positions in his videos a lot and they are so good in the videos also when he talks in the video it's both about the topic of Generation Zero also could be the real history about Sweden plus the town and when he talked about it is very good and I love it a lot man

I adore it when videogames are a loveletter to Something. To a theme, to art, to music, to their characters, to the country of the developers.
All of these make me emotional, sure, but the ones about the country of the developers also feel very personal. Like the devs could gush/complain directly to you about their lives and childhood and chores in the place they grew up in. There is beautiful emotional honesty in this, and it's very, very special.

I missed this video as I was playing generation zero when the video dropped.
This game is rough on the edges and sometimes frustrating, but just like you said, I keep coming back. They have the best and most epic AI battles between the swedish and Soviet robots and the most fun thing is to run right into the middle of it and create more chaos, dropping the bots one by one, and finally standing in the midst of fallen machines.
With 1200 hours of playtime and maxing out all the augmentation on high level weapons, this game is an absolute power trip when it works.

It isn’t an insane game - a lot of the buildings are prefabs with a few extra props, there’s loads of empty space, and it’s almost impossible to do late game combat without friends and copious amounts of medical equipment, but the atmosphere of Generation Zero’s world and world building are excellent. I love the designs of the robots too - only complaint in that regard is their weak points aren’t telegraphed well enough.

Man, this is a love letter this damaged game deserves. It is broken on so many fundamental levels, on the brink of just not being a fully released game at all, yet I've spent 200 hours in myself, just soaked with the pure beauty of this world, time and place frozen in the cold rays of northern sun.

I used to play this game CONSTANTLY before, i adore it! As soon as i saw it was possible to pre-order it, i did. The fact i could run around seeing Volvo's and Saab's all around while fighting big robots was so cool, and then finding the bunkers with jets made me realise just how much i loved it. A lot of my friends from other countries wanted to play it with me constantly, i translated everything for them and told them what was accurate and not! The memories i have with Generation Zero can't be replicated by any other game!
@@Monarch_Souls I would LOVE to play this game with a swede who grew up in the times it was based on! I just spent half the night playing this earlier, and even after all the hours I've sunk into this, I'd love to go on a tour of the place with someone who knows the region, as it were.

The devs are still working on this though, just a matter of time before they release another dlc that tells the next chapter of the story.
This is just Awesome! As a fellow swede and of the age that I lived in all those places and eras, hell I even did my military services in just those barracks, bunkers and bases and I recognize the bedspreads, the chairs and the small cramped toilets.
Generation Zero is my zen, my happy place, it's where I go to relax after a long day and sometimes I just bike around the world drinking in the mood. I even remember riding my Puch Dakota which is the model for the moped in the game and I feel very much like I could dismantle an AG-4 blindfolded as it feels just like my AK in the military.

I never played this game, but (at a glance) it kind of reminds me of Bohemia Interactive's extraction shooter called Vigor which is set in Norway.
Playing generation zero with swedish audio and english subtitles is one of the most immersive experiences I remember.
Also, I assumed that the island the game is set on Is fictional purely because I couldnt find a match on google maps. oops
I would say Generation Zero is the best terminator game i have played and that it has it's moments. I remember feeling joy and happiness when gas tank trap blew up a tracker in one shot. Becuse earlier i had used my hunting riffle to slowly shot one down earlier. And then when i got out of the small tutorial island and saw the large dinosaur terminator tanks stomping around. i truly felt small. I felt even smaller when i crawled across the grassy fields with the stomping right next to me. its like taking that one moment out of call of duty 4 in chernobyl with the tank convoy and scaling it up to 1000.
There is somthing special about popping your pants and then seeing Dalecarlian horse as jour getting barraged by missels

I'm from across the gulf from Stockholm (Turku, or Åbo as our old rulers deigned to name this city), and even I get nostalgic in GZ. I ended up giving it a go after discussing how Hunter: COTW's Finland map had so much stuff I recognize. There are tables and chairs that my godmother had when I was a kid in the 80's, but there are more contemporary things as well. And it too, is an amalgamation of Finland from north to south. It feels really weird. So I was wondering why the cars in the map had doors and hoods and trunks that would open despite having no reason to. I got told about GZ and how they shared a lot of assets especially between the Finland map and GZ.
When I play GZ, there's a very similar feel, as we had in the 80's. Different, since it's Sweden, but similar. I can smell the village stores, feel the breeze from the sea, remember how good the ice cream my mom bought me on that trip to our cottage in the archipelago was... And then rest of it I remember from the Swedish series and movies that were on TV here. And going into the wilds, I just know how to move stealthily and where to head. The... spirit of the land is so similar. And while I grew in the SE of Finland, the West coast is quite similar to what GZ has.
But yeah, I understand what you mean, and you must feel it even more as you live in Sweden. Switching the spoken language to Swedish for the heck of it even made me shed my dislike for how Swedish sounds. I'm actually quite ok with it nowadays. But it's weird because you're so used to hearing only English.

I thought this was a great episode. Here in America, I had a Literature teacher (also an American) who back in 2015 talked about the Law of Jante, and how it strongly affected Scandinavian culture. Since I have two Norwegian great-grandparents, and one Swedish great-grandparent, I was interested to know more. While I would like to think I have some kind of connection to that region through ancestry, I must admit I know very little about the culture. I remember that while I have only been able to ask 3 or 4 Scandinavians if the Law of Jante was really a strong part of their culture, they all said that they didn't see it all that much in how they were raised. This video was interesting in the fact that I got to hear from a Scandinavian roughly my age say that this is still a BIG part of the culture, combined with all the visual flair I have come to expect from your videos. I also really like the segment where you went down the rabbit hole using clues from the game like the milk colors and the crests to try and figure out where this was located in the country, along with your Swedish VHS tapes of the Star Wars movies. I'm curious to see what you think of the game "Unravel", which I think also take place in Sweden. From what I've heard about the Rule of Jante, I've wondered if I would make for a good Scandinavian, and a lot of the time I've come to the conclusion that I wouldn't be, since I am very outgoing and sometimes loud and rambunctuous, I act very different from most people I am surrounded with at school and at work, and I really don't want to be socially isolated anymore like I have in the past, but at the same time I respect that the ideology promotes the equality of all people, which I think is very important.
I guess if there's any Scandinavians in the comment section, I wanted to say that I'm very open for them to correct me if I've gotten the idea of the Law of Jante wrong.
i have 600+ hours in this game im from the uk and i loved how empty he game felt in the early stages it helped set the tone and from what you said about how the sweeds keep to yourself it makes me question why they added npcs outside of the dlcs it feels more western than when it first launched but i cant stop playing, i've been running a investigation on a location in game in the discord and the community is small but loyal we try our best to keep the game felling as it did back in 2019, this game is beautiful in graphics and story its a shame its so buggy and the story is so hidden
wow, this is an amazing video about one of my all-time favorite games!
I've played GZ for over 800 hours (i know, that's a damn long time for a game like this) and still i really like it. there is just something about the vibe you get when playing this game. Just the lagre divide between a setting so peacefull and relaxing together with an unwinnable way against enemies way stronger then yourself (well untill you get the really good gear and become a swedish terminator). And i think this video made me realise a bit more why i feel this way, the attention to detail that for a large part goes completely unknowticed to me but still somehow feels close to home. I'm not Swedish, not even from scandinavia, but as a fellow westeren European this still feels so strangely real.

Ouh also as a sidenote im a Finn which means that first it's very painful to praise a Swede and second, about the Swedes thinking they sre THE nordic country, we know you think like that, and bc of that we see Swedes as kinda up their own ass, but we also agree with it and for example many law reforms are explained to us with "it worked in Sweden"

I love Sweden. And this game is purely epic. I've been playing it for 2 years now and it never becomes boring. And the thing is that if you visit the Swedish countryside it looks exactly like the game.
I spend a good amount of time exploring the details, reading signs, newspaper headlines etc to fully grasp every aspect of the culture.
It feels like home. Just like when i visit Sweden. This might sound strange coming from a German but my personality fits the Swedish culture. I'm open and heartly but i love to be alone a lot.
I love this game no matter how "buggy" it is. You don't necessarily get many games going against machines of this and at first I thought it was odd but now I love it to its core.

Got turned away from this game because it got softlocked something like 3 hours in. Some robots didn't break out of a door they were supposed to and I could not continue the story. Was not really interested in getting back there from the start to see if it maybe worked that time.

I own a few dlcs and my god it’s a rough game…. Remember buying the game when it first launched on the Xbox one… when comparing the old and newer version is wayyyy different… older was way easier even on the guerrilla difficulty… now guerrilla punishes noobs and is extremely punishing for mistakes… I’ve played gen zero so much I’ve beaten the entire game with experimental only, Swedish guns only and no exp, American weapons only no exp… currently doing Soviet with no exp run which is on halt rn… it’s a game that’s so fun and yet my god feels so ahead of it’s time… there used to be bug where you mess with the game… when you Loot leave 1 item and if you close the game it fills it back up with different loot and was recently fixed which

It sucked me in, finding little clues here & there, reading the notes left behind. I really enjoyed the game & after taking a break for a while find myself more & more wanting to get back into it.

I was sorely disappointed in Gen0 when i started playing. I loved the game but it was more of an FPS RPG than the "Robot hunting game" i was expecting. Its a shame, really, because Gen0 pulls off the atmosphere MASTERFULLY and i think that, with some work, it COULD be converted into the game i was expecting. But i know that's not gonna happen by the hands of anyone but me and i don't have the experience to do so. Still, i have had a lot of fun over the 150+ hours i have spent in the game.
This video kinda makes me notice how different, yet how similar us finns are with you swedes.

The fact that you went and actually figured out roughly where the game takes place is amazing. From what I've been able to gather about the story, it does sound plausible but I don't know that for sure.
What do you think of the gameplay, I quite like it.

Don't get me wrong, the base game is amazing, and as a Swede i love it. but it had so much potential.
I've datamined the game out of excitement for years looking for new stuff, and at times even teased the whole community with new stuff found in the files. Seeing what was being worked on and left out due to focus change to something that i feel shouldn't be in this game, it left me with no hope for the future of Generation Zero.
I really hope they do something big again, like a story DLC or.. Something other than micro dlc's that are sort of lack luster while some of them not fitting in at the same time. and it looks like some of those micro dlc's only exist to earn them money.

I agree with you. I'm German and don't really have any connection to Sweden - but playing this game I felt a strong, pervasive sense of place and time throughout. Though I think you're a bit quick to dismiss the actual gameplay. Yes, it's rough and certainly not perfect. But it's something that keeps me coming back as well.
No other game feels the same. Giant tanks and harvesters towering in distant fields, their roars traveling all the way where you're lying in the woods, waiting for a patrol of scouts to pass, holding your breath and hoping they pass - because even if you can kill them, you just know every machine in a kilometer radius would rush to your location afterwards.
You could be loaded up to the gills with weapons and medkits, yet the tension still persists. Not because of the actual gameplay difficulty or because the last checkpoint was hours ago, but simply by the atmosphere and gameplay alone. I think the only other game that accomplished this is STALKER. But STALKER still feels different. In STALKER you dive down into a more personal hell, trying to keep your sanity as you descend deeper into the man-made horrors of the zone. In Generation Zero meanwhile, it feels like you're trying to slip between the maws of a giant, uncaring machine that you can not hope to take down. It's a very different atmosphere. One that I have never found anywhere else.
So this video looks like it was a fun one for you! Lots of rambly thoughts, just because:
-I love a game where the atmosphere/environment really becomes a lot of the experience for people. I feel like everyone has a few of those, and they're not always the same for everyone, but there's something magical about environmental design in a game that can be the greatest thing sometimes. Just greatness.
-The scenery and open space of that game look awesommmmmmmmmmme. I like it. Never heard of the game before this video, so I got to learn things!
-I grew up in the Pacific Northwest of the US, and there are a decent amount of shows (like X-Files and more) and games (Like Alan Wake II and more! Watery tho) that give me the big forests and rainy fall days I really remember... but specifically, I grew up in Oregon. Oregon particularly isn't represented specifically in things, so I remember a single game coming out in recent years that made me excited to see how they were going to create the Oregon wilderness as their setting. Unfortunately for me, that game was Days Gone... so that didn't represent it as well as I'd hoped, or as much as GenZero seems to have for you. You can't always get a win in every category I guess. Hahaha
But it's still cool when some things cater towards those specifics at all.
Hopefully time can keep bringing about those occasional fantasy realities for people. Hahaha

As an American, Far Cry 5 is the same. Its not the best game and is exactly like Far Cry 3 or 4 but the setting and atmosphere feels like home and I could just walk around in that game for hours.

the first time i played GZ was during a free weekend in 2021 or 2022 and from that moment i was hooked. and today ive completed the main story and the DLC storylines atleast 2 times each

I play far too many genres to have a singular favorite game, but this one is easily in the running for it alongside monster hunter world. Despite it's faults, I have done my hardest to play it as much as I can.
