Thank you for the history on these pickups and thanks for the alternatives at the end. I was just in the process of asking about the 1 Meg pot. I guess alternatively you could push-pull pot to remove/replace the tone control from the circuit.
Cutting the tone pots lead-wire only and not the ground wire as well works too and would make a restoration in future easier. A no load pot provides all the options if you like them in one but requiers soldering.
Wow, great video and the difference is more than subtle, is almost as if the tone pot was restricting a lot of sound, it is definitely more open now. Now Im wondering about the volume pot...
Tone pots definitely do restrict sound, that’s why I usually opt for the no-load variety. And yes, changing the volume to 500 K is definitely reported to help with these pickups as well. Thanks for your feedback!
I have the Squier Esquire Deluxe, which has a switch setting that takes both the volume & tone pots out of the circuit. That gives you a more pronounced difference than just removing the tone pot, and it's switchable. You could do the same thing on that Tele by adding a push-pull pot.
Enjoyed the video I would be interested in a future volume pot swap to a 500k, I recently swapped out my single coil neck pickup with a reissue CuNiFe wide range pickup and the tone I'm getting with the standard 250k volume is disappointing I'm considering a combo 250/500k volume because I really love the tone of my bridge pickup but I'm having a hard time finding a wiring diagram for this setup any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks for the comment! If you got one of the real re-issue pickups, it would definitely be worth the effort to find the optimal wiring. I think a combo volume pot is the first place to start, and then maybe disconnecting it from the tone pot. Folks on the TDPRI forum have tons of good insight as well.
I just got one of these, it's great. It's the older one 2012 with a pretty fat neck. So, if you were going to replace the neck and or the bridge pickups on this Tele Custom, what would it be?
It’s a Gator Case Pedalboard. www.sweetwater.com/c1106--Pedalboards?highlight=GPTBLK&seoslug=gator-pedal-tote-16.5-inch-by-12-inch-pedalboard-with-bag&catrollup=4/1381/1106&mrkgadid=&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=gpla&mrkgbflag=1&mrkgcat=drums&percussion&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=&lid=58700008501175174&dsproductgroupid=&product_id=GPTBLK&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=t&network=x&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9032850&creative=&targetid=&campaignid=20426646913&awsearchcpc=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyYPEn-G3hAMVXhCtBh1VcQV0EAQYASABEgKyEvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Hey nice mod. I often bypass the tone pot on my teles. If I want a darker tone I just tweak the treble or add bass on my amp haha... So you did get a superblock! Sounds good, how do you like it?
I absolutely love the SuperBlock, so thanks again for your demos. Funny part is I bought it for the Vox tones, which are great, but ended up liking the Marshall setting best. It’s the best Marshall clean tone I’ve encountered - just big and rich and surprisingly chimey.

I would probably put a regular humbucker like a Seth Lover in the neck with a Jerry Donahue in the bridge, both from Duncan.
Thanks again!@@Hoodrio
I absolutely love Jerry Donahue's playing, especially on Fotheringay recordings.
@@markwolfe4444 very cool. And if you haven’t tried the pickup, it’s one of my all-time favorites.
@@markwolfe4444 here’s my demo of the Donahue pickup:

@@Hoodrio yup! It is very good on all settings!
Enjoy and rock on!
Why doesn’t Fender get roasted for deceiving people about these things?
