  • In Northern Russia, many Axis and Allied plane wrecks abound, not least in the cold lakes of the region. One of the best preserved had lain submerged for 61 years, and when raised to the surface, was still in excellent condition. This is the story of "Red 6".
Dr. Mark Felton is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.o...

I saw this 109 at the Planes of Fame in 2018. To see it in its original livery, along with the bullet holes and battle damage, was unique and fascinating. I spent more time assessing this 109 than I did any of their other fine aircraft. I say it should remain unrestored.

For me as a career railroader, it’s the same problem that railway museums sometimes create. A relic is found, dog-eared, tired and hungry. Decades of service are obvious from worn out handles, multiple paint jobs, cracks and more. A story is heard to those who wish to listen.
All of that is erased during restoration. A sterile, off-the-shelf product is presented. No personality is found. Only a beauty queen with a sign to read.
Sometimes… it’s best to let a sleeping dog lie. Let the dents, holes and rust tell the whole story. Plenty of other queens to ogle in the next aisle.

In the early 90's I visited a private airport outside of Atlanta where a recent ME109 was rescued from a lake in Poland. Again, the aircraft was damaged and unflyable so the pilot landed on a lake with the foe on one side and friends on the other, scrambling to reach friendly lines. The USSR soldiers shot the hell out of the aircraft just for fun while it sat on the frozen lake surface, then as the weather warmed it fell thru the ice and sank just weeks later riddled with big & small holes. Transported then to Atlanta to be rebuilt it was then in pieces and was in the process of being rebuilt. One of the owners was working on a vacuum damper supplying/controlling the airflow to the in-wing radiator. It was in the open position meaning that vacuum was still present in the controlling actuator, as we spoke to the tech/owner he put a wrench on the supply line to remove the actuator assembly and as soon as he cracked the line open, the damper closed AMAZZING!! That after all these years, 50 at least under water, it was still in good working condition. No lack of quality in their work man ship.
    Enjoy...

At some point, it'll be too expensive to rebuild and preserve it. You won't have the metals, the paints, the tools, or the expertise any more.

Amazingly, a few months ago I found a Monogram model kit( Quarter inch scale)of an Me109E in my bedroom closet that I had bought for $3 at a flea market. It remains in its original box in excellent condition still in its original plastic yet to be built. It even came with a modelers patch that I display on a patch board .🤣

There is a growing niche hobby of people scouring former war areas all over eastern Europe...collecting war memorabilia and finding the odd body here and there. Those with decency notify the authorities and the remains are recovered and repatriated if possible.

Really tough call. On the one hand, seeing it in its original condition is fascinating and meaningful, especially given how well-preserved it is. On the other, so few wrecks can be restored to flying condition that it seems a huge lost opportunity to not have another ME-109 in the air when so few airworthy frames exist.

Living near Lake Tahoe (California/Nevada border) which is a very deep, extremely cold lake (the waters are "gelid" - if the waters weren't moving, they would freeze solid) we have seen many recoverys like this aircraft, in incredible shape. A few years ago they raised a fairly large passenger ferry steamer that had been scuttled in the 1920's. When they washed off the mud, it looked like it had sunk a couple of years ago - practically no rust or rot. As another strange effect, drowning victims do not decay, bloat and rise to the surface. They simply sink to the bottom (1600 ft. - 500 meters) and freeze. Most of them are still down there. Recently a drowning victim washed up on shore after a couple of months and it was a shocking event. No one had ever heard of such a thing.

If it flies again there is always the chance of a crash. Many old aircraft have been lost forever this way. Better to work on improved preservation that would add to the beauty of all the original paint and design.

Very few original parts would be safe to re-use.
Better to use it as a pattern for spares for other 109s.
Strangely, the 109 is harder to restore than the Spitfire.
The 109's bodyshell was stamped out by dies, which no longer exist.
The Spitfire was mostly hand-built. A skilled team can knock out replacement panels from scratch.

I do realise that these old war-birds are amazing when flying, but I am always tense seeing them for real or even watching them on film. Such aged machines are by now rather frail and dangerous, and were never as safe as modern aeroplanes even when new.
To see one unrestored is a much greater pleasure for me, though I'll never see this one as I don't expect to visit the USA.
As always, Dr Felton, this is fascinating.
Best wishes from George in UK
