This song seriously makes me cry so hard because it was me and my mom's favorite song when I was a kid, but when I came out to her, she flipped out. I could never listen to this song because it reminded me of my mom... but to hear an LGBT version... It makes cry because for the first time, I feel normal. My mom has called me horrible things and done horrible things to me. But one of the most terrible things she's said to me, is that I wasn't normal.
I can now listen to my favorite song, and not feel like I can't relate to it.

Mmm.... not always. I can count far more "origial" covers of songs that are far worse than the originals than I can covers done by a new singer with just the SLIGHTEST twist that ended up being as good if not better than the original

This is absolutely beautiful. I loved the fact that you sang it about a girl and didn't bother changing any pronouns, not hiding your sexual orientation. Plus, this was absolutely gorgeous and I love your rendition/cover of this song. There's definitely something to be said about the original upbeat tone, but this slow and more soulful take on it makes me swoon.

I was just thinking that. It sounds almost impossibly tragic with a female vocalist. If it wasn't a cover originally performed by a male vocalist, I might dismiss it as "way too honest." As it stands, however... It is incredibly ironic and heartbreaking.

Her voice is so perfect she could literally sing a song full of nonsense words and I would still love it. Everything she sings gives me chills.
I remember seeing Rick Springfield (original singer) back in the 80's performing this song on the queen Mary ship in Long Beach, Ca. Depending on how old you are, you might remember his role on the popular soap opera General Hospital. He was soo darn popular back then due to his role on that show and then when Jesse's Girl hit the radio stations it heightened his popularity even more. I would have never imagined hearing this song as a slow ballad, it almost makes more sense to be honest. Originally it's an upbeat song about a depressing subject... Mary's version truly makes more sense! ..LoL. We're always going to love this iconic/classic tune that has stood the hands of time but Mary Lambert did an awesome job changing it up and making it her own. Heard it for the first time just now and I'm super impressed!!

There was a girl in some of my college classes who is working on becoming a singer and she's a lesbian and I just loved that she was singing love songs about women because it isn't something I ever hear. I'm not a lesbian and it appealed to me because it isn't something that a lot of people do. Same sex love songs will appeal to plenty of people because people crave originality and, unfortunately, gay people singing about how and who they love is something we never hear. We need more stuff like this.

I love the sorrow here over the high pitch fight that the original had. It show a difference between men and women, in the most beautiful way. The original was al high beats and guitar riffs that spoke of anger and competition. Here the somber piano softly fading in and out of the front as the sadness comes and goes.
