  • Maono was kind enough to send a PM500 our way, and we thought we would shoot it out against a variety of other large diaphragm condensers that aren't often all in one place. Thank you to Alexis for her incredible singing.
All vocal takes are raw with no EQ , tuning, or compression. Straight out of Logic Pro.
First in the video is the Aston Origin ($259 CDN), Telefunken ELA M 251 ($15,380), Neumann U87i ($4925), and the Maono PM500 ($139.99 CDN)

the 251 is incomparable. I thought the U87 would come close to the 251 in terms of clarity but boy how wrong am I...

Everything I've put in front of the 251 has sounded stellar. Can't wait to get our TF47!

Really appreciate this unbiased comparison! Thanks a lot! 👍
Would you say the cheaper microphones can somewhat compare to the expensive competition? I can hear a small difference in clarity and details (through my audiophile headphones), but nothing too remarkable. Could never distinguish them in a mix. But I have a feeling a trained ear can do better?
Anyway, the Maono sells for 50€ now which feels like a no brainer for the aspiring bedroom musician. 😊

It's really a matter of taste, but what makes for a good recording, in order, is: performer/performance, sound of the room, abilities of the engineer, then mic, preamp, etc. A good engineer recording a good performer/performance in a good space could make this Maono mic work pretty well. The high end mics make it easier as there's less work to get them sounding good because they sound good right away. For that price, it's worth getting one and learning everything about how it sounds, and spending the time learning how to get it to sound as good as you can when mixing. It's a good idea to do the same thing with something like an SM57 as well as it's an industry standard mic that's also not too expensive.

@@rupertstreetrecording Thanks for your insightful comment. So I ended up with one and I really like the sound. Also, for fun, I imported your video in my DAW, used Pro Q to match the recordings between the mics and after a bit of tweaking ended up with two EQ presets to make the Maono sound Neumannish or Telefunky - it actually kind of works. :D A question though, is the piano also coming through the microphones or is it on a different track?

@@magnusl6200 I recorded the piano earlier, so it's on a separate track.

I love the sound of the U87 also. The 251 sounds incredible on anything I've put in front of it too.
