I’m new to Corrientes and new to this channel, but consider me all in! We’re an ultra small operation in the mountains of Arizona near the Grand Canyon, but we’ve been looking for the perfect fit/breed of cattle and the Corrientes absolutely come out on top! And then to find out we have a local breeder and supplier within 10 miles of our farm, we’re so thankful for this channel as we reshift our operation to this unique and advantageous breed!
Have you explored the Mexican restaurant market? It seems to me there is scope for marketing Corrientes as providing an authentic flavor to traditional Mexican dishes. Grass fed unimproved beef must have a niche market somewhere.
Jmho, in my very limited experience, in general, Corrientes don't handle pressure well and can jump fences with ease. So maybe not the best choice for those starting out with cattle. Easiest breeds I've had the pleasure of working with are Lowlines, Mashonas, and Japanese blacks (wagyu). Ymmv. Every breed has a spectrum.
@@grazing365 awesome! Looking forward to it Ben. I’m sure I’ll be dabbling in the Mashona genetics myself at some point. Mashona/South Poll should be a winner
Roped out corrientes have been the gentlest cows I’ve managed; however, as much as we interact with our cows they all end up dog gentle (with a handful of exceptions)
I am in Southwest Arkansas and I am trying trying to develop Corriente, Angus, and Longhorns with SouthPoll bulls. I would love to discuss your strategy with you more. Are you open to this? I have around 160 total head including calves on 150 acres of grazing land. I am still struggling with parasites. The dung Beatles are amazing now, about 4 years into this transition, but still struggling. Are you up for discussing things that could help my operation out?
Wouldn’t it be interesting to cross adapted Red Angus and Corriente to Mashona and Boran Cattle (importing semen via Australia) and thereby creating your very own Veldmaster cattle, something even Johann Zietsman would be proud of?
lol, they sure won’t look pretty! I’ve heard very mixed reviews about Akaushi on grass. My suspicion is that they would prob work best on a cross-cow that’s highly adapted to its environment and highly efficient on grass. Corriente would be a starting point for that cross-cow, but I’d dial in those before putting Akaushi on top of that. Just my opinion though
Corriente crossed with just about any breed will make small, prime carcasses. And, I'm glad you liked my home here in Montana. Corriente are the wisest investment one can make.
I don’t understand that decision at all. The revenue per animal would be much better with SP. Is it because you need an animal that can live off of heavy weeds to perform in this system?
I have nothing but good things to say about SP; and revenue per animal with SP’s is currently better. It may not be safe to assume that will always be the case. IMO the current price of SP has exceeded their inherent value as beef cattle. It’s difficult to justify current prices if you base value off of what animals are worth at the commodity level or in terms of pounds weaned/acre. Is a SP cow worth 5 or 6 Corrientes from a profit/acre standpoint? I don’t think so. Is a SP worth more than a crossbred commercial cow that similar carcass quality, heat tolerance, grass efficiency, etc? I don’t think so. I believe it’s possible to achieve as good or better results at a much better price point right now. Hybrid vigor is a powerful force.
@@jamiemyers1622 I agree that demand is currently far greater. I liken it to the current price of farmland. If someone pays $8000/acre for pasture, they may or may not make a profit when they sell the property. There’s no way to tell what will happen to the value of the land. What I CAN say definitively is that pasture selling for that price is disconnected from its inherent agricultural value.
NO more SOUTH POLLED bred😂😂 so sad😂😂 I’m gone❤❤❤❤❤ I won’t watch anymore 😂 it’s your choice 😂 the final decision is mine to watch the same thing as others 😂 or watch something unique 😂good 🍀 luck 🍀 on your choice
Great video Ben. Love the message your doing great things my friend keep on keeping on.
I appreciate that!

You're in!
Welcome back, we missed you!
Oh thank you!
I hope that you truly enjoyed your break and family time. I am glad that you are back because your videos are the reason I have recently started UHDG.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear you’re headed down the path of UHDG
What’s the latest with your herd? Just found your channel while getting up to speed on Total Grazing.

Not yet!
Mashona maybe?

That’s the direction. Most of the replacement cows I’m purchasing are already heavy-bred. Next year though ??? Stay tuned

Sure! Send an email to Ben.healingthesoil@gmail.com
You'll basically be creating your own pineywoods breed. Sounds dope. Will you be using any SP genetics moving forward?
I’ll keep a few heifers for the gene pool, but I’m super impressed with some Mashona crosses I’ve seen.
Da lord be blessed
👍
Pig weed is a vegetable here in kenya. You should try some.
I will take your word for it!
Grazing non-selectively, what is your breedback rate?
85% +. It helps to have your animals packed in during breeding season. Now, if you’re genetics aren’t adapted it can be a train wreck

Yes it would
I was thinking about cross breeding Corriente with Akaushi bull. What do you think about that mix

@grazing3654 I have seen people have mixed the corriente cattle with kobe bull they looked fine
Why don’t you or do you plan to use Mashona genetics?
That’s the direction we are heading. The best adapted animals I’ve seen to my type of environment are Mashona/Angus crosses. Stay tuned!
I’d be interested in Mashona genetics also, just don’t know where to get any. And not really set up to do AI

Your reply suggests that you believe SP cattle will decrease in value. I appreciate your opinion. However, the current demand far exceeds the supply.
