Appreciate you the work you put in to give another side of this fable. The unconscious bias of deviance and criminality we associate with black culture is valid. Whether it's Yes, Yes, Y'all or NY77 documentary, this theory seems to originate with Wiz and Caz. Someone should follow up with them about this specific issue. In the NY77 documentary, Caz himself notes he was fortunate to have some family money left to him to buy equipment but then he also admits to stealing during the blackout. This competing narrative is probably where my opinion rests in its duality: Hip hop music and sound systems did not "start" after the blackout, that's a likely biased oversimplification. But to think it had no measurable effect would seem short sighted as well. Whatever that effect is needs to be studied more closely and less sensationally. Thanks again for putting this out there.

it's not literally every DJ got equipment after the blackout, But the black out time is the era when gangs in NYC phased out, and more and more DJ's came into effect. The maingang era in NYC was 1969-77. After black out gangs got played out and it became about "crews".

Crazy how such a small event could cause something so widespread and influential. I feell like the black out was a main reason for hip hops appreciation as there were hella gifted people who fucked with music from the beginning and could make anything out of any instrument.

On that day DJ Hollywood had a jam in the Bronx 3rd Avenue 180th Street. Ask him. All of New York was partying years before the blackout. A few stores could not supply all the DJs in New York.

There are narratives on here that are true but the culture started way before this or any narrative stated on here about it being the beginning I know this for a fact and I can prove it..But what it did due which is stated on here a few times is the narrative of Dj crews being created, there is a ton of information of the early history already out, as a matter of fact we just celebrated the Breaking Hall Of Fame awards event last night (November 10 2022).

@@dobledes Earlier mid seventies mind you we have 4 elements some acknowledge Writing as one of them some don’t so that perspective is based on when you got introduced to the culture, So Breaking started before what we now acknowledge as the “HipHop DJ” which historically is 77-78, narratives like the doubles and the various Dj crews being formed was mainly the Blackout of 77 like stated above Mc(Rap) was a 77 thang many like Sha Rock and others have recently stated this and many have spoken the same narratives and agreed this is the date when Mcings developed (Possibly 78). Now Breaking went through various phases from Burning, Breaking, Rocking (A respectful quick historical account) This timeline is mid 73-75 as the beginning, this being had developmental stage that was the biggest change in the cultures history this is a nutshell response but the in between parts if you follow what currently has gone on with historical research this explaination will be clear..I will say that many aren’t aware of some of the historical narratives of research has been updated with REAL research..

Great video highlighting this false narrative. I’m sure a few folks came up on turntables but not to the extent that Caz is implying . Hip-hop and it’s respective elements were all being cultivated and advancing well before the summer of 77.
