@@FastidiousFalchion you need to check your facts bro. If you don't hit your macros and calories by midnight all your muscles instantly drop off and you turn into a pumpkin.
I used to be super skinny, and didn’t have enough appetite to eat more whole foods to increase my weight. I switched to shakes and drinked my calories for like 6 months. I gained around 15 kg and now i switched back to whole foods and i am able to eat normal food to sustain my current weight, which i am happy with
It is called SEO - Search Engine Optimization, and most content creators use it by any way or another. They basically track the most searched terms or topics so they can release content related to it since it will be likely to get tons of views. And views equals money. I used to work with this a few years ago
@ - this statement is exactly why this video is interesting though. What you’re saying is what everybody’s saying. But exploring and discussing/educating WHAT IF you had to rely on it multiple times per day for X-duration (for whatever reason) and otherwise not hit your protein goals, what then? Which is what this tackles. Obviously it’s better to get it from Whole Foods. But it’s also good to know that if you’re in a pinch, chugging protein drinks and paying attention to general stuff for a couple of weeks most likely won’t mess you up.
Glad you mentioned liestyle/family/cultural aspects to whole and real foods as being significant in the decision making. Shakes and bar are very convenient but are essentially (like a lot of technology) isolating boring and dull. Real food is meant to be a source of joy and if you are lucky enough to live in place where you have access and resources to choose then it's also a literal feast for the senses (colour, taste/odour, texture etc). A great shared or even solo meal is always greater than the sum of its parts.
I have to do shakes to get protein in. I just down them. My appetite isn't there, and it's just hard to get whole food protein down. Drinking one and getting an easy 25 grams is wonderful. *Edit to add, since many feel the need to put people down in the comments or try to be some superior entity that knows everything. I am a woman. Most are assuming that I am a man and have to make comments like oh you must be so big with protein shakes or he thinks this is awesome, shakes aren't the best etc. It IS fucking awesome TO HAVE A SHAKE AS AN OPTION FOR SUPPLEMENTATION! It isn't that I don't EVER eat, but many days, I have to supplement a shake or 2 depending. Everyone with their critique on if people worked out harder or whatever else, are just ridiculous. It has nothing to do with that. Some people just don't have an appetite. Some people are on medications that inhibit an appetite, or many other different things can cause appetite issues. I have muscle, I am in TFR, if you want to see, I will upload the back day I just had! I have muscle, I am defined, protein shakes have not made it to where I can't build muscle. Others saying it isn't hard to get protein in. Yeah, it isn't hard when you are hungry. Some days, I eat a shit ton of meat, other days, I am nauseated with no appetite. Some days, I can eat eggs easily and many days, I can eat Greek yogurt, but not every single day can I get the amt of protein needed. There are days where that 25g shake or 50g is helpful when nauseated and unable to eat. Even if I was a man, why make comments like oh you must be so big or talk about appearance? Putting another man down for what? Let's see your 250lb muscle packed body! Many in the comments have the same problem that I have and have to supplement, why put them down? Again, in TFR? Let me know! I am 5'1, 105lbs, today I was 104lbs, but still have muscle, not scrawny, but even if I was, if I can't eat whole food protein, then it is what it is, no need to put people down! I have worked with RP coaches, I have completed the Menno Henselmans PT course, I have worked J. Shreve, I am not an idiot on this stuff, BUT, I always proceeed as if I am a complete beginner, because I am not an expert, as many in the comments who put people down seem to be. I know there will be comments making fun of me, or something of that nature, so I acknowledge you beforehand. Thank you for such kind words🥰
having to force food (or even a shake) down isn’t worth it imo. did it after noob gains phase. felt like i had an eating disorder. eventually my appetite became incredible once i got over the anxiety of “if i miss a meal im gonna lose my gains”… it took me taking an extended break from lifting as well, and starting fresh.
Me too man i dont think i could eat barely eat 2000 caloires let alone 150g of protien or more a day at 160lbs...i love Shakes for this. Especially Fairlife. I kill em in about 3 sips.
I've been struggling to get my macro's in because I'm sleeping about 11 hours a day right now, so I'm not waking up early enough to get 3 meals. That's it's own problem that isn't solvable at the moment, but I am still able to work out. I looked at protein powders today and at these prices, I'll just eat my canned fish at 2am and move on.
@@mpclepto182 the market is definitely inflated right now. Optimum Nutrition is the cheapest brand i trust and it's like 70 bucks for 5 pounds of protein powder. I just recently found some at Aldi's though. "Elevation." They only have the 2lb. option but it cost 20 bucks after tax. Best deal I've found all year. Similar macros to ON
What brand/flavor of protein were you using to make edible ice cream? I've yet to find a shake that i like drinking enough to even try turning it into ice cream.
I threw away the batch I made with premier protein, I know just what you mean. I usually use the fairlife core power chocolate with some added cocoa powder. Can mix it up by adding peanut butter powder, strawberries, blueberries, banana, whatever. I like it a lot, my wife can’t stand it because of the artificial sweetener in the shakes. Gotta find what works for you, freezing it isn’t going to make something taste better.
I have to say that my diet has radically changed. I'm on Tirzepatide and the docs have said I need to focus primarily on protein and fiber along with resistance/strength training. So I listened to them. I typically have some yogurt or cottage cheese with a shake in the morning for breakfast. Shake usually for lunch, sometimes I'll throw in more yogurt or some trail mix. I'll have another shake before I go to workout (about an hour before) Then I'll have a proper dinner; grilled chicken and brocoli, steak and asparagus, salmon and steamed veggies, meal sized chicken salad, etc. I add fiber supplements to my shakes and take a daily multivitamin/multimineral. I try to not have carbs and while I'm not absolutely avoiding them, I'm low on my fat intake compared to my "normal" day. All the research I've done says this should be good to sustain and build as needed. If I do feel hungry or snacky, I'll snag a banana or some pears or a mango, or some sort of fruit. Also really big on the fermented foods (probiotics) that I make myself so I'll often put kimchi or sauerkraut with my dinner meal. I will also note: I dont avoid foods. The meds just make me not hungry and limit how much I can have in a sitting (feel full faster) so it seems easier to do the shakes to ensure I'm getting the nutrition I need. * I do not* avoid foods. I will go to family gatherings and have all the bbq, hot dogs, burgers, tacos, etc. I just dont have as much. I'll still eat a slice or two of pizza. I'll still go out to eat and get the Indian or Mexican foods. It's just not regular and often it's about maybe 2-3x a month so far. I'm also actively working out 5x a week. Stength training 3x a week as I recover better I will consider moving that up as is feasible, but I do cardio on the off days. My weekends I'm just active; either homebrewing or hiking or just doing something active not in a gym setting.

@ With pretty much any shake on the market you are gonna get 20-40 grams of protein for about 150-300 kcal. Sure there are differences but they’re minor in the grand scheme.
Thanks for the excellent post. Fun note: Soylent in the book 'Make Room! Make Room!' by Harry Harrison, means Soy + Lentil. There was no eating of dead people in that novel. It was a Hollywood creation when it was rewritten for the screen.
@@alsoroses Unchecked population growth and the hoarding of resources by a wealthy elite. In the movie they solved the overpopulation + low resources issue by turning people into food, the book is slightly more realistic and people just suffer as you'd expect in a situation where there's too many people and not enough food - shrinking rations, social unrest, and a "the world will end" cult.
Glad you made this one... I constantly see people saying "try get your protein from whole real food", but nobody ever says why. Would be good to actually see some studies comparing people getting their protein from shakes vs whole foods.
Theres definitely slightly more benefit from consuming animal protein as opposed to protein powders as they are plant based and animal usually tends to have more essential amino acids but overall i dont think it makes much of a difference.
I had an unidentified stomach issue for a few years that affected my appetite severely. For a while it was a struggle not to lose weight, discovering protein shakes and mass gainer made such a huge difference when I physically couldn't make myself eat solid food. I can't express enough how much of an energy difference it made, it felt like a magic crutch. The relief that comes with going from literally running on empty to being able to consume essentially a liquid source of fuel is indescribable. It might not work for everyone, but the shakes are definitely worth a try if you have trouble eating enough.
@@Mountainshark As someone who has struggled to eat enough as well, it's not something to be jealous about. You basically have to force feed yourself constantly, far past when you wanted to stop eating, just to be able to maintain your weight. It's very uncomfortable, I've ended up vomiting from trying to eat/drink enough in a sitting to keep up with calorie goals and still lost weight. Plus when your appetite is low it doesn't remind you to eat, sometimes you can go whole days just forgetting to eat until you realize you feel terrible and weak
@comedysyrup I am jealous. Stop bragging about being skinny. I'm constantly hungry. Always in starvation mode. It's so expensive. Not easy to lose weight. You are humble bragging.
@ It's not humble bragging, being anorexic sucks. Try having empathy for people who have struggles that are different from your own instead of belittling their struggles. Being underweight isn't anything to brag about
@comedysyrup are you going to complain about being too rich as well? My life is terrible. I'm never hungry and I just keep making large amounts of money without trying. People are paying thousands of dollars a month to suppress their appetite and get stomachaches in ordert to stop eating. Stop humble bragging. We get it, you're skinny. Congratulations. Stop rubbing it in our face. I will always be overweight, probably for the rest of my life. No matter how much money I spend.
Whey protein powder is actually minimally processed food, whey is just skimmed, dehydrated and sifted mechanically, there is no chemical process, like they make corn oil with. And if you have issue with a bit of sweetner (in most cases sucralose) you can buy natural, no flavor or raw.
It's really strange, people won't think milk powder is processed but whey (protein) powder is highly processed, while there's literally one step of difference in the production process and you could make both at home with fairly little equipment.

I’m sitting in iHop right now enjoying my chicken fajitas omelette with pancakes with loads of syrup post workout. Dr Mike this is one of your best videos, hopefully your UA-cam data analytics shows this. I’ll doing my part by liking and sharing. So many good shit was said in this video. I’ve been preaching to my inner circle of peeps for the past 17yrs on the shit they eat and being active. Trust me, I’m not a preacher, you gotta do, do, do. Your yearly blood work is crucial. When I tell the avg person how many eggs I eat, they are usually always shocked. My blood work has been excellent for as long as I can remember. I’m more on the whole food protein wagon. But I usually always sip a protein shake post workout (except for today) as I’m driving home Excellent video Dr Mike Tell Scott the video guy what’s up
Here in the UK, Lidl sell 400g of 20% grass fed beef mince for £2.85. I split it into 3 portions and add 4 eggs per serving for about 600cals/50g of protein at around £1.50 per portion... it doesn't get much cheaper than that.
Brilliant video. Thanks so much for posting up on the screen the bullet points and topics/questions. I feel more satiated after having watched this video. 😁
I feel like this is a great video for me to leave this comment. I weighed over 320lbs once and now I am at 200lbs. The process of losing weight lasted for almost nine months. First I started with walking (4k then 6k steps per day), and increased water intake (min 15. glasses of water and tea), then I swapped sweets with fruits. I also got myself a meal plan from online tool called OnlyMeal and that was a definite game changer. Every single day was properly calculated, and I have never been hungry, and pounds just fell off. Honestly a recommendation for everyone.
Amazing stuff bro, I am also losing weight. I lost 23lbs in 4 months, had some issues as well last month. But now I am strongly motivated for 2025, and I will get that meal plan as well. Seems like a really good option.
I have had to go strictly on gluten free and lactose free foods because of my auto immune disorders. I don’t really watch how much of anything I eat because it’s just not enjoyable, and just cutting down on the carbs because of no gluten and the calories from dairy products made me loose 15lbs this year. Increasing water also helps you feel full and makes your joints not hurt so bad (coming from an almost 50 year old).
And for some places not including USA, protein shake is considerably cheaper per unit mass of protein in meat. (1kg frozen raw chicken tenderloin cost 2.57USD here)
It is the same in the US. Whole foods are much more expensive than just getting a giant 60 serving container of protein powder. It is 4.00USD per pound of chicken breast tenderloin here. Which is more than 8.00USD per Kilo. So you can include the USA if you want.
i did mainly soylent for a month straight once...i never had more gas in my life. I constantly had to step outside during work to let em rip. This was years ago when Soylent was new though, so perhaps they've refined the formula some. Take your fiber and supps if you do the shake life
For protein shakes if you're worried about fiber just add in oats, chia seeds, flaxseed as that'll add a good amount of fiber. Also, adding in fruits with maybe spinach or kale can also add some fiber and taste. Just don't limit yourself to only the protein in the shake, be willing to add other things to it for taste and to add some fiber.
I get Oats Overnight packs and mix them with a Vanilla Pure Protein shake instead of milk. 50 grams of protein and 430 calories, plus all the fiber from the oats and flaxseeds they put in.
Haven't watched a Dr Mike vid in over a year, but I gotta say he hasn't lost a step at all. In fact, he's in full stride and still killing it with relatable and useful content.
Getting 1.6g/kg of *protein* per day from whole foods without blowing over 2k calories per gets 1) fkin expensive, and 2) very laborious to plan and cook properly so it doesn't taste like shit but still have the right macros. Especially outside of US - the rest of the world does not enjoy cheap-as-chips beef.
I don't know how expensive beef is outside the US, but here, it's still one of the more expensive meats. Ground beef may be a good value, but most of the specific cuts are much more expensive. Chicken and pork tend to be our better protein/cost meats.
@@stratotele12 Im saying this as an American to my fellow Americans who are unaware of this fact; The US Government heavily subsidizes the dairy and beef industry here. I forget the exact metric but beef would be like 3 times more expensive if ranchers werent basically living off Big Gov handouts. (the irony that ranchers, farmers, etc are often openly critical of Big Gov and 'communism' when theyre the recipients of such huge subsidies notwithstanding) We as Americans enjoy very cheap meat prices in relation to average citizen gross income compared to the rest of the world.
Aye, for me it's less about the price and more about the convenience. For us normies who have a job, family and social life, we sacrifice a lot to have our 2 hours at the gym. Last thing I want to be doing is spending another 45 mins in the kitchen cooking steaks as a "post workout snack".
Takes no time at all to throw veg/rice/ meat in a pressure cooker or slow cooker. The problem is lyes between people wanting an absolutely culinary experience with food vs. people who simply eat with purpose. Sure the food shouldn’t taste like absolute trash. But it’s hard to mess up something so simple. I spend maybe 20-30 mins once a week throwing food in and I’m set for the week. literally threw a whole dry seasoned chicken in an air fryer a few weeks ago. Keep it simple 🤷🏻♀️
The strongest rationale for not sustaining yourself on shakes only for months on end is that not chewing for so long may severely mess up your mouth and teeth.
Truth, for me even a day without solid food makes chewing feel really weird when I have it again. Not sure what's going on, but there's definitely something to be said about wagging your jaw on some food every day.
Don't you bite down really hard during workouts? Like I'm considering maybe getting a mouthguard since I might accidentally chip a tooth with how hard I'm biting down.
good point with the jaw gains... when you drink too many shakes you just gotta add to the mix a well-done steak, so you chew the hell outta those muscles :D
Absolute facts on the jaw gains but the rest is just subjective. The real reason is prioritizing foods with the least ingredients as possible to reduce any long term currently-unknown risk. Like we don’t know yet what a protein bar with 20g of sugar alcohols will do to us long term yet. We do know that eating some good old chicken breast will do no harm.
@@Pwjdjskw Be that as it may, it has little to do with my comment which lists biggest reasons why I keep solid food in my blended cottage cheese/Greek yoghurt diet which is awesome and very tasty and full of fiber as I add oats, fruit, vegetables. Cheese is exactly as riskless when it is blended. You work your jaw by chewing, you get tired of milkshake texture all the time and as you can't chew food as well as blender does it will impact transit time and as such satiety
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Absolutely, steve.porss_ I can relate to your experiences with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Mushrooms have truly been a game-changer for me and have played a significant role in my journey to staying clean.
I wish those were more easily accessible where I live. Microdosing was my next step for my husband. He's 59 & dealing with lots of mental health challenges, possible CTE & a TBI that put him in a coma for 8 days. Unfortunately, I had to get a TPO since he's 6'6, over 300 pounds, and showing violent behavior, constantly talking about harming others. He's aggressive. To anyone reading this, if you're familiar with BPD, is it common to have an obsession with violence?
Dr Mike often takes about “getting your bloodwork done” but never really goes deeper than that. I’d like an episode of what that process looks like and how to understand the results, or at least some basics. Right now when he says “get your bloodwork done” I literally have no idea where to start. I bought a testosterone test off of Everlywell, but I feel like we’re talking about something more comprehensive
Go to your Primary care doctor to request bloodwork. They will recommend based on your age, medical history, and risk factors what to have drawn. Dr. Mike doesn’t go into detail because it is dependent on the person. I’m a nurse and thought this might be helpful. However, fyi doctors don’t typically recommend sports performance type of labs so you may have to ask specifically about those.
as well as getting a full panel ordered from your doc, if you have a Quest Labs near you you can schedule (and pay) for any bloodwork you want without a doctors script. They also have an app that breaks down all of your results and lets you know if you are good or deficient or even over the healthy limit. The app keeps all your info so when you get repeated tests done you can see graphs of how you compare. I have been severely anemic my entire life (diet doesnt matter) and this has been an incredible tool to keep up wiht my iron (hemoglobic, etc) and ferratin levels as well as anything else im interested in tracking
You can get your bloodwork done by asking your doctor. You can search online/look at your own diet for any specific nutrients you might be worried about, and talk to your doctor about testing those. Other than that, if you're worried about testosterone, just tell the doctor you think you might be low test (if your doctor asks more about it, just fabricate symptoms/search online for symptoms)
When I just started going to the gym, I had to drink shakes. There was no other way to hit my protein goal. I didn't eat much, and I just couldn't take all the fat that came with the meats and some fatty fishies. Now after 8 months, my body changed and shakes aren't a must have anymore. I still drink them casually, but I could eat enough whole foods to reach my goal if I'm not busy. Shakes are more like a tool for me. And I'm very grateful that a tool like this exists, while being very tasty!
Needed this as a guy that just started and relies on shakes for my calories and protien. I can usually eat a good breakfast of chicken patties, eggs and sauasage gravy and then just drink mass gainer and protien shakes for the rest of the day.
I don’t like shakes or anything ‘milky’, so I bake a banana protein cake and eat that as my protein supplement. I eat 3, 40g/protein meals a day, and a slice of this protein cake to hit 160g/protein daily goal. Here’s the macros for an 1/8 of the cake: 520cal / 4.8g fat / 76.5g carb / 41.6g protein. Yes lots of calories, but this is great for not only the protein intake, but hitting my calorie goal. Here’s the recipe: Preheat oven to 350 1 box fat free angel food cake mix 300g Casein powder 125g Vanilla whey powder 4-5 ripe bananas (mashed) 5 cups water Teaspoon banana extract and vanilla Using a mixer, mix everything except the bananas on medium high speed for a minute or two, then add the smashed bananas. Beat mixture for 30 seconds. Pour into a nonstick pan of choice. I use an angel food cake pan. Topping: 30g brown sugar 60g walnuts Cinnamon Crush tje walnuts and mix them with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top. Bake for an hour or so depending on the pan. Use the toothpick method to test doneness. When I’m dieting down, I omit the bananas and walnut topping to reduce the calories.

Minus chronic nutrient deficiencies, I wholeheartedly agree. Trans fats, hydrogenated oils, there's a long list of processed food additives that seem actively harmful to consume.
Another point for whole food is maintaining a healthy relationship with food, and as a counterpoint, bouncing back from disordered eating and/or, say, depression, nutrition shakes are absolute gold
70% of my protein consumed over the last few years has been from whey protein powder. Works for me. I do go with the unflavored, unsweetened ones though.

I used to drink shakes to get my protein in, but they seem to have fucked up my microbiome for quite a while. The difference with shakes and whole foods is the way and speed they are digested. We’re not supposed to get in 20grams of protein in a couple of swallows. Same thing with sugars (sodas). I’m only eating whole foods now and my digestion is way better. There’s a lot of digestive processes happening allready in the mouth. The saliva in your mouth that gets mixed with the food makes it digest way better. Also cooking your own food and looking at it while eating it helps the digestion. Anyway, happy for everyone who hasn’t got digestive issues with shakes!
I experienced the same thing... I suspect it was the artificial sweeteners though, there is some evidence suggesting that some people's gut microbiome may get disturbed by some of them. I got a powder without them now and will try this instead
Surprised that the microbiome wasn't even mentioned in the video because to me it was the most common reason to eat whole over processed foods. Given that what we eat influences our microbiome and our microbiome influences our behaviour... 😅
A large reason why I don’t consume protein shakes is that I’m allergic to dairy and gluten. Which the vast majority of those things have in them and the ones that do not, literally taste like shit I have never been able to find one that does what it needs to do but still taste consumable on a regular basis.
In my opinion there should be a distinction between strictly 'mechanically processed' foods and 'mechanically and/or chemically' processed foods because it's the chemical part of processing that adds most of the negative qualities to the food.
Yeah... *no* On one hand processed is processed, on another for what purpose it was processed and what is the final result. The process itself means nothing, way too many variables.
That's a great point. There's a significant dietary distinction to be made between mechanical and chemical processing. There's also a distinction between mechanical processing that leaves the foodstuff compositionally intact, and mechanical processing that removes something otherwise edible from it. A good example of that is the difference between brown and white rice.
My logic is always that if you eat a little bit of everything you'll never suffer the major consequences of eating a lot of any of those individual things. Every health issue I've seen is derived from eating a large quantity of the same thing
The fact that nobody talks about the book You Are Stronger Than You Think from Cryptic Lore is wild. It’s packed with insights on testosterone and building confidence
Dr Mike I recently came across your videos. This is in my opinion your best yet. You've definitely put my mind to ease. I've been in a state of analysis paralysis over nutrition for to long. A lot of well intentioned people that unfortunately think it's their way or the highway on UA-cam. I'd already come to the conclusion that we're all omnivores but I now prefer your Dumpster Diver definition. Meet your macros don't over consume and avoid the "Ultra processed food ". Time for me to reread "In Defense of Food " by Mike Rosen which was where I started years ago. Thank you for your videos.
Some studies apparently show a connection between not chewing and cognitive impairment, that's worth looking into if there isn't a lot of solid food in your diet.
The video doesn't address the #1 reason the research suggests to eat whole foods: lower inflammatory response in the body, leaving your system with more resources to recover from training. I'm in my 50s, eat strictly whole foods, and after years of my recovery process getting worse since going whole foods it's now flipped and is getting better again.
That makes very much sense. I get that a lot of things are “processed” but protein in a cup vs actual protein sources……meeehhh I’m not sold that it’s worth giving up the food…
I've read the article about the inventor of Keto chow, which is the expensive vitamin enriched protein shake. The kicker is, those shakes are designed to be mixed with a very fatty source, like heavy cream or avocado oil. Apparently he lived on his keto Chow shakes for an entire month, without eating any other food. He seemed to do very well.
@@ThatOneDudeThatLooksStuffUp His cookbook has many baking recipes with protein powders replacing flours, so I guess he and Mike are probably in the same team here.
Little off topic , but my pancreas quit. Hospital stuck a feeding tube in my intestines, 8 months all I had was a bag of stuff made by Nestle. 1250ml. No food, no water. I’m back to food now but limited on Fat, grease, pretty much anything that tastes good. I have been using a whey shake to help get some weight back and starting to get some muscle back.
I'll never understand how some people absolutely seethe at the use of protein shakes. It's quick and easy and saves me the time and effort of adding two extra meals to my day. I'm still getting all the benefits of whole foods in those other meals and my life doesn't revolve around the kitchen.
I switched from shakes to whole foods (mostly beef) and saw significant differences in strength and growth. Also don't miss the bloating from the shakes. I have no issues with processed food or shakes. This is just what I experienced.
I think everyone should make super healthy protein shake sometimes and by that I mean, the protein powder is only 25%. You got banana bananas you got blueberries. You got other amazing stuff and even then I can only do it twice a week because real food tastes way better.
FYI banana base in a berry smoothie ruins the amount of flavanols you get from the berries significantly. For a berry smoothie I'd go for avocado base or just skip the base altogether and drink it in a more fluid form.
when I went to see a gastroenterologist and mentioned I occasionally drink protein shakes, he told me that he had a patient who only consumed shakes / protein bars and other bodybuilding supplements and he ended up having a constipation so bad that surgery was needed to resolve it. the patient took fibre supplements too but those weren't properly water soluble.
Ive noticed better gains since ditching shakes for a real satiating meal with ideal macros. Cottage cheese is basically a shake lol. Ill have a bar if i have to work thru lunch tho just to keep me from eating gas station food. But the whole idea is NOT to eat the bar. Its a shelf stable an emergency ration for me.
@promo130 not a whole lot of fat or sugar. And by making sure i include fat and sugar and protein in appropriate ratios in everything I eat, my appetite is always managed and i get all my nutrients so i dont have to resort to supplements. It took me years to figure this out. Im not against shakes i just find i dont really need them.
In normal food there are a lot of additional substances that prevent cancer, clear arteries, feed the biodome, improve eyesight and organ functions e.g. antioxidants. It is impossible to get them all in shakes. Also shakes can contain harmful artificial sweeteners. Supplements should be supplements, not replacements.
One of the things I wish was talked about a bit more is supplements are not regulated properly. Protein powder is not regulated like they regulate food. This means that fillers and other crap can be in your Protein powder that you aren't aware of. This is why it is very important if you do take protein powder you do your research, or be safer and look for whole food options. The other thing that isn't talked about much is High Protein diets ie. 1 gram per pound of body weight has impact to the Kidneys. Now everyone is different but it is important to understand your family history and know if you are predisposed to have Kidney disease. I won't say that you can't or shouldn't do High Protein diets, I will just recommend please do your own research and make sure it is right for you with your own risk factors. For beginners, I would highly recommend not taking supplements and just focus on getting in a routine of eating as best as you can and just go to the gym. Focus on form, be safe, and keep going. Once you have been going for a while (months) and you are more serious about your diet, then I would look at doing proper research to understand what supplements would be best for you.
0:48 Finally that is actually being addressed. I remember when people first started telling me to eat unprocessed food and I looked at the definition and was like wait where the hell do I get unprocessed food all food in a store is processed!
Whole foods tend to provide a better micronutrient, digestive and orthodontic benefits as its what humans are meant to eat. Shakes seem to be convenient and suited to hard gainers. Whole foods seem to be preferred for those who have slower metabolisms and need less calories because they can meet their needs with whole food.
Where I live in Malaysia, protein powders are fucking expensive. I was jobless for nearly 2 years during covid because our dumbass government locked us up for a total of 1.5 years. I had to find ways to save money. One of it was cutting back on supplements so I stopped buying protein and creatine powders. Instead I started eating 12 whole eggs per day. Hard boiled. 4 for breakfast, 4 for lunch, I'll eat a massive dinner, another 4 as a late night snack. Eating this way keeps me pretty full throughout the day. I did this for 2 years straight. Every 6 months I'll go to my doctor for blood work. The whole high cholesterol thing is a myth. Besides the protein content, the yolk is basically natures multivitamin. I dont think I'll ever buy supplements anymore.
A good way of looking at it regarding shakes: people live on tube feedings for years and decades with minimal nutritional deficiencies. It’s in essence a meal replacement shake
I would love for you to do a video on eating based on where women are at in their cycles. You talk about feeling cravings on protein shakes follow the craving because it's possibly your body telling you your getting low on something. I have the same issue but, depending on where I am at in my cycle, regardless of if I'm eating whole foods or have protein shakes in the mix.

Obviously it’s better to get it from Whole Foods. But it’s also good to know that if you’re in a pinch, chugging protein drinks and paying attention to general stuff for a couple of weeks most likely won’t mess you up.

Ghey
Same, mass gainers really helped me gain a considerable amount of weight
I make two per day and make them with whole milk instead of water. They're 45 grams each. Two gets me 90.
having to force food (or even a shake) down isn’t worth it imo. did it after noob gains phase. felt like i had an eating disorder. eventually my appetite became incredible once i got over the anxiety of “if i miss a meal im gonna lose my gains”… it took me taking an extended break from lifting as well, and starting fresh.
Same bro. I'd guess that 70% of my protein intake over the last years has been from whey powder. Works for me. Just don't have the appetite.

I've been struggling to get my macro's in because I'm sleeping about 11 hours a day right now, so I'm not waking up early enough to get 3 meals. @bobp4036 I'll have to give fairlife a shot. Thank you! I've been able to stomach the gnc amp but couldn't imagine making it into an ice-cream.
Yup, when I'm craving ice cream a protein powder, greek yogurt, frozen banana and chocolate then toss it in the freezer.
I always have a pint of protein ice cream in the freezer, the Creami has been a game changer.

I also got myself a meal plan from online tool called OnlyMeal and that was a definite game changer. Every single day was properly calculated, and I have never been hungry, and pounds just fell off. And for some places not including USA, protein shake is considerably cheaper per unit mass of protein in meat. (1kg frozen raw chicken tenderloin cost 2.57USD here)
Yeah, exactly. Protein Powder isn't a replacement for solid food, it's a supplement to it.
It is the same in the US. Whole foods are much more expensive than just getting a giant 60 serving container of protein powder. It is 4.00USD per pound of chicken breast tenderloin here. Which is more than 8.00USD per Kilo. So you can include the USA if you want.
Gotta agree beef and eggs are outrageous here in texas

This was years ago when Soylent was new though, so perhaps they've refined the formula some. Take your fiber and supps if you do the shake life
For protein shakes if you're worried about fiber just add in oats, chia seeds, flaxseed as that'll add a good amount of fiber. Also, adding in fruits with maybe spinach or kale can also add some fiber and taste. Just don't limit yourself to only the protein in the shake, be willing to add other things to it for taste and to add some fiber.
Peanut butter works nicely too

Beef is expensive as shit in the u.s if you buy from a market and not a butcher.. what are you talking about 😆
@@stratotele12 Im saying this as an American to my fellow Americans who are unaware of this fact; The US Government heavily subsidizes the dairy and beef industry here.
Nah, that's what gum is for 😂
"Try more gum!" - Albert (The Birdcage)
Truth, for me even a day without solid food makes chewing feel really weird when I have it again. Not sure what's going on, but there's definitely something to be said about wagging your jaw on some food every day.
Don't you bite down really hard during workouts? Like I'm considering maybe getting a mouthguard since I might accidentally chip a tooth with how hard I'm biting down.
@@realization8919yeah thats a problem youre gonna end up with issues from that, def work on relaxing your jaw during workouts!
Most important reasons for eating at least some whole foods are 1) jaw gains 2) texture variety 3) satiety
good point with the jaw gains... when you drink too many shakes you just gotta add to the mix a well-done steak, so you chew the hell outta those muscles :D

I could tell you're getting leaner man keep up the good work 🤘

There was no other way to hit my protein goal. I didn't eat much, and I just couldn't take all the fat that came with the meats and some fatty fishies.
Now after 8 months, my body changed and shakes aren't a must have anymore.
I still drink them casually, but I could eat enough whole foods to reach my goal if I'm not busy.
Shakes are more like a tool for me. And I'm very grateful that a tool like this exists, while being very tasty!
I absolutely love your fitness information and guidance but your personality and humor is just as 🔥
Love this guys depth into foods and training and his sence of humour.
Here’s the recipe:
Preheat oven to 350
1 box fat free angel food cake mix
300g Casein powder
125g Vanilla whey powder
4-5 ripe bananas (mashed)
5 cups water
Teaspoon banana extract and vanilla
Using a mixer, mix everything except the bananas on medium high speed for a minute or two, then add the smashed bananas. Beat mixture for 30 seconds.
Pour into a nonstick pan of choice. I use an angel food cake pan.
Topping:
30g brown sugar
60g walnuts
Cinnamon
Crush tje walnuts and mix them with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top. Bake for an hour or so depending on the pan. Use the toothpick method to test doneness.
When I’m dieting down, I omit the bananas and walnut topping to reduce the calories.
I like this presentation format, much easier to understand what Dr. Mike is trying to say this way.
You just need to eat the Cookbook, pages and all.
just eat that greg douschete dude. it will save your for a month
@RMJerich0 he is full of lean meat
Doctor Mike seamed to be in chill mood. I liked this approach. Good fireside chat.
You are one of the smartest guys advising in this media. Thanks!
Protein shakes, lowfat greek yogurt, and cottage cheese has been my entire diet grub lol
Please include some fruit smoothies

Shaking my protein so hard watching this
😭
Mike your a legend thank you for your help. Soz i cant afford to join but i follow and watch everything. Your advice is excellent. Thanks from down Under.
Outside of missing your macros/calories a lot of the problems caused by poor diet are related to what is let in, not what is missed.
Minus chronic nutrient deficiencies, I wholeheartedly agree. Trans fats, hydrogenated oils, there's a long list of processed food additives that seem actively harmful to consume.
Pro tip for advanced dieters, if you struggle with appetite switch all shakes to meat/dairy. Chewing and filling up on volume helps a lot
Another point for whole food is maintaining a healthy relationship with food, and as a counterpoint, bouncing back from disordered eating and/or, say, depression, nutrition shakes are absolute gold
I was struggling to get to sleep but this really helped 😮
70% of my protein consumed over the last few years has been from whey protein powder. Works for me. I do go with the unflavored, unsweetened ones though.
Whey protein literally have metals and lead in it! 40% of 134 brands tested were found to have elevated levels of heavy metals. 75% of 134 brands tested contained measurable lead concentrations. 🤦♂️
I'm in the habit of adding a scoop to most things I make. It's surprising how often I can't even tell it's there.
@@SeuOu how many grams do you consume per day approx
thank you for sharing this video so needed this
I used to drink shakes to get my protein in, but they seem to have fucked up my microbiome for quite a while.
Mixing with milk might help
I agree. Transparency in our food should be well. More transparent
Yeah... *no*
On one hand processed is processed, on another for what purpose it was processed and what is the final result.
@@feedbackzaloop Not to be harsh, but I think you should process those thoughts a bit more.
@@SeuOu what exactly in "way too many" is small and simple enough that you can jump into conclusions?
Appreciate the wordplay though👍
My logic is always that if you eat a little bit of everything you'll never suffer the major consequences of eating a lot of any of those individual things. Every health issue I've seen is derived from eating a large quantity of the same thing
The fact that nobody talks about the book You Are Stronger Than You Think from Cryptic Lore is wild. It’s packed with insights on testosterone and building confidence

Great video, great channel.
Ofc it would be nice if protein powders were not overloaded with sweeteners and flavourings to an excessive amount.
Try unflavored Naked Whey 👌🏻
Agree but there are plenty of healthier/plainer options out there though they do cost more
@@ElijsDima I use unflavored 'Naked whey'
you can mix flavored whey with unflavored whey in your shake
Some studies apparently show a connection between not chewing and cognitive impairment, that's worth looking into if there isn't a lot of solid food in your diet.
chewing gum it is!
Can you point to a few research articles?
I've read the article about the inventor of Keto chow, which is the expensive vitamin enriched protein shake. The kicker is, those shakes are designed to be mixed with a very fatty source, like heavy cream or avocado oil. Apparently he lived on his keto Chow shakes for an entire month, without eating any other food. He seemed to do very well.
I can’t wait for Greg to review this
Level 4 leg curls incoming
@@ThatOneDudeThatLooksStuffUp I read that in his voice
@@ThatOneDudeThatLooksStuffUp His cookbook has many baking recipes with protein powders replacing flours, so I guess he and Mike are probably in the same team here.
valuable information, thank you
Little off topic , but my pancreas quit.
@6:45 spoiler alert maybe?
You've also got a major blood sugar spike
when I went to see a gastroenterologist and mentioned I occasionally drink protein shakes, he told me that he had a patient who only consumed shakes / protein bars and other bodybuilding supplements and he ended up having a constipation so bad that surgery was needed to resolve it.
the patient took fibre supplements too but those weren't properly water soluble.

This is why Dr. Mike is the best!
He is clear and concise, for the casuals and dumbases
Ive noticed better gains since ditching shakes for a real satiating meal with ideal macros. Cottage cheese is basically a shake lol. Ill have a bar if i have to work thru lunch tho just to keep me from eating gas station food. But the whole idea is NOT to eat the bar. Its a shelf stable an emergency ration for me.
With tons of fat and sugar, no thanks
@@promo130 its all about your overall macros and not heing hungry. A shake does nothing but make me hungry lol
@@promo130 Fat and sugar (Carbs) are two of the three major macronutrients. Are you just... sustaining yourself purely on protein?
@ sugar😂😂😂
In normal food there are a lot of additional substances that prevent cancer, clear arteries, feed the biodome, improve eyesight and organ functions e.g. antioxidants. It is impossible to get them all in shakes. Also shakes can contain harmful artificial sweeteners. Supplements should be supplements, not replacements.
This makes me feel justified in chugging protein stakes during Christmas dinner yesterday 😋
What an awesome video. Thanks!
I couldn't gain mass. So I bought a giant dog-food sized sack of Mass Gainer shake. Finished the sack. Lost 2kg.
Love ur videos 😊 im taking notes
I dont think I'll ever buy supplements anymore.
no clue about covid but talking about myths. Do something for your brain, bro. And don't spend time on the internet. It's nothing for you.
Eggs are bad for you is the biggest myth out there lol.
Thanks for this video dr mike
No RP hypertrophy Ad, I was literally waiting all video.
💯 Solid topic. I just love shakes because most the time just don't feel like eating whole foods. Seems like a matter of preference for most people.
As always Dr Mike gives some of the best and most common sense advice.
Hey Mike can you do a review on thr benefits or lack there of of consuming Green Powdered Drinks?
