    Thanks for the quick reply. I have loved your tutorials and bought the e6b on the strenth of them. My old flight compute,r you could work out crosswind and headwind components, which the e6b does not show, how to do. So I now wait for this tutorial, then I will be extremly happy.

    True
    Variation
    Magnetic
    Deviation
    Compass
    Add Westerly (subtract easterly)
    The rule to follow is when going down the above list as in; true to magnetic or magnetic to compass we add westerly variation or deviation and subtract any easterly variation or deviation. When going up, or in the opposite direction, as in; compass to magnetic or magnetic to true we subtract westerly and add easterly.
    An easy way to memorize the formula is to come up with a mnemonic that includes the letters T, V, M, D, C, A, W. A favorite one is: True Virgins Make Dull Companions, Add Whiskey.

    Thanks DJA984. I already knew that method. What I wanted to know was how you could do it on the Jeppsen wind side of the e6b computer. You can do it on the Pooleys version. The Jeppsen does most things very simply and I like using it.

    I need help, am stuck with getting my compass heading to steer and the flight time... this is is the question " w/v 285/20,tas 100kts,track 230dgrees,variation 22 degrees west, deviation 4 degrees west,distance 215nm. the compass heading to steer and the flight time is?" please give me a tip to do this

    Very good tutorial. However, for the sixth step, it says to use the IAS. Shouldn't it be the TAS?

    • @andreasulber3652
      @andreasulber3652 9 років тому

      David Bard I am only a private pilot student, but I thin you are correct, it should be TAS and not IAS.

    • @GedStreet
      @GedStreet 9 років тому +1

      Yes, it should be TAS but usually the difference in low speed, low level aircraft isn't significant.

    I hope I don't fail my practical because I would never use a wiz wheel , I have no interest in learning to use a wiz wheel. Not as accurate as digital e6bs.. And I need a pencil to use the wiz wheel, and Im certain that my pencil would break in flight.. Chances of my Ipad/ backup ipad/ iphone / and handheld digital e6b all failing is roughly 0.000001%

    How do you know where to start with true heading?

    • @subaruford3344

  • @anggabriel1059
    @anggabriel1059 9 років тому +2

    To all the budding students from my training days, has been with me all my flying days noted on the comments column unable to calculate your heading. remember these words .True Virgins Make Dull Company say it and memorise it - True Heading +/- apply Variation East/West = Magnetic +/- Compass deviation = Compass heading. True-Variation-Magnetic-Deviation-Compass......= Magnetic heading. Fly safe............

  • @bryanmorgan2323
    @bryanmorgan2323 8 років тому +3

    This is incorrect. The wind direction should be plotted from 060 and the central grommet should be positioned over the True Airspeed (TAS). It's convenient to think of the TAS of the aircraft coming from zero down at the bottom to 110 kts at the grommet then the wind added on from the grommet. The correct hdg is 036, G/S 90kts and drift is 6 degrees to port.

    • @christopherwilson6527
      @christopherwilson6527 6 років тому +1

      Bryan Morgan it is correct. This was wind up method, much quicker. Your version is wind down and involves more steps but the answers are pretty much the same.

  • @DHUK
    @DHUK 12 років тому

    Do you not add on the left and subtract on the right? Sure this Is wrong! For example if the dot is on the left and the true track was 180 degrees, you add what ever is showing on the dot to that track. If that makes sense!

  • @johnpro2847
    @johnpro2847 6 років тому

    Compass Deviation adjusts for small compass errors and is checked by a small card near the compass in the actual aircraft.
    Magnetic Variation is the difference between Magnetic North and ' polar cap' also called true north and is found from calculated lines on navigation charts & maps.
    East is least, subtract from true heading. West is best, add to true heading.

  • @treyclarke4505
    @treyclarke4505 12 років тому

    So "East is Least, West is Best" does not apply here?

  • @davidheon5959
    @davidheon5959 11 років тому

    east is least (minus) west is greater ( plus)
    Left is minus (left behind) ... Right is Plus (right ahead)

  • @CaptainKirk6658

    Useful but full of incorrect information - watch out:
    - you use your course, not your heading
    - you use your TAS, not your IAS
