Im actually using a regular sketch book for watercolours, because I didn't have a particular one for watercolours, but it's pretty thick and acts like a regular watercolor sketch book
what brand is your sketchbook from ? :O
thank you!
Merailla i use drawing paper and creola water color and 3 paint brushes only
Merailla i think what you're using is mix media paper. it's thick and it can withstand watercolor
Merailla I use mixed media paper because I can use it for other mediums and mainly watercolor cause it's cheap but I usually get mine if amazon
A very useful video for someone who doesn't have any idea about watercolour supplies like me! Thanks
Gustin Lawis agree
For the palette, you could also just use a ice cube form thingy
Neo Logic this is so smart. I didn't think of that
You mean ice tray. :) And thanks for the idea, it's really good!
Ooh nice idea 😄
Personally i dont like them because the paint can just pop out, but it is a nice thought.
Neo Logic i use a clear plastic binder divider w/our the pocket it actually works quite well
Thanks I learned stuff that will make my new hobby a bit easier to kickstart. I am in a wheelchair so need the information before heading out to make my purchases. I already do a bit of drawing so watercolour is my next adventure.
+Don Wood good luck! Glad the video helped you :)
I'm Not Liking, Why? Because There's 100 Likes! I Don't Want 101
ItssKawaii i'm liking because there',s 140 likes..and i'm gonna make its 141
Vivian Alexander i dont want to ruin it bro so ill leave it 141
Intel Legacy it's 142 likes now
For a water disk u can use half a plastic water bottle because the bottom has ridges that clean the brushes as well and the edge is sharp so you can get the perfect amount of water.
Probably the best darn video I've seen on this subject.
+Trinican Bee haha, thank you :)
My school has hundreds of those "wheel" cheap watercolours and i personally love them, but literally everyone messes them up by mixing the colours and ruining the white, come on people!!
Leilicorn SAME I literally started like 2 days ago so I'm only using the really cheap stuff form the dollar store. But soon I'm gonna get the wheel coz I love em
Leilicorn ugh the white never actually stays white
If you wet the watercolors you can just wipe off the mixed colors from the actual colors
Leilicorn has
Same thing used to happen in my old school but I used to just wipe all the colours and tell people whoever’s working with me better not mix the paints
I use regular cardstock, random brushes i already had, an egg crate as a palette, and an inexpensive set of tube watercolors from Michaels. It all works fine. I appreciate your thoughts but it's important to acknowledge that, even if you are going to stick with it, beginners make a lot of mistakes and waste paint no matter how careful they are or how many videos they watch. We don't need expensive products starting out (actually, I'm happy enough with my inexpensive set to think that once I get a handle on the pigment I still won't need anything better). For those beginners that are making a hobby/destressor out of it it's absolutely unnecessary to have some of those really expensive items.

Got the supplies, I just need the talent 😭
hahahaa
You don‘t need talent you just need your supplies and the motivation to practise!
I‘m cheering for you😄💜

Talent is persistence combined with constant learning. Don’t beat yourself up. It takes time and many false starts to achieve a good painting.
Got the talent, I just need the supplies 😭
This video is so amazing! I’m glad I found this, I’m a beginner and I honestly had no clue what I was doing or what I needed. Thank you so much for the helpful tips! 💙💜😍
i'm a beginner and i've been experimenting with watercolors for almost 3 months. i study architecture and it comes in handy for the conceptual part of the presentation and for ideas. i've tried both pans and tubes and as beginner i highly recommend the pan version of watercolors. the paint is more manageable and you can bring it everywhere with you. i found myself being more aware about the quantity of the paint that i used with pans, because i could see how much was left. that's just my personal preference. as for the paint sets, i also own the winsor&newton pocket set and it's beautiful. so easy to work with and so compact. definitely a must-try.
this video was super helpful for someone who wants to get into watercolors and wants to know what is quality and some cheap alternatives.
I use a normal sketchbook and it works very well, but it depends on the brand i think.😊
It just depends on the weight. Your paper probably is 100lb or higher and thats why it works well
I am keen to start watercolouring. I only do little bits in my cardmaking but I just want to paint!!! I loved your video and have subscribed to your channel. You are clear and concise, and offer real helpful advice. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to watching more and more of your videos. From rural Western Australia g'day! Elle
I regret watching this right after Christmas ;-;
Why?
Just buy it if you want it.
feel u but my Birthday is soon so imma use the chance and buy some art stuff that i dont really need atm TT especially the expensive ones ;)
I needed to get some watercolors for a project, but I knew I wanted to get into them more... So this video really helped me pick some brushes and a watercolor set. I chose a cotman set of 24 half pans. It's a good bang for your buck
I'am using acrylic paints for quite a while and wanted to try different kinds of medium your vids are very helpful thanks a lot
Got the talent, I just need money to buy supplies!
Damn this life.
"You can use something you don't drink out of like, a mug, Mason jar."
*Me:* uh..I drink out of mason jars...
I meant it as more of a ‘use something specifically for painting’. As in not something you’re going to try and drink out of later. Just safer that way. Paint can have some pretty serious ingredients that you definitely don’t want to be consuming.
Is just me but she sounds a bit like gigi hadid 😍
yazz
Yes definitely
I’m really excited to try these since I love drawing but I wanna take it to the next level❤️
I was trying to find out where to get some winsor and newton watercolor pans and this video helped me a lot! Definitely will be heading to Michaels tomorrow :)
This was really helpful! I like how you showed materials that are cheap. Thanks
Thanks! This is a great vid. I can’t wait to get started on watercolours. I couldn’t find the right equipment anywhere before. :)
Thanks! That was clear, informative and there was no time wasted in the instruction.
Do you have any tips on starting off to become passionate in art? I am very passionate and try my very best but sometimes I question my ability and wonder how to become better. Thank you! :)
+Samantha Rainbow I wrote a fairly lengthy post about it here: studioofmm.tumblr.com/post/144121179999/artmotivation
Hope it helps! :)
Thanks! :)
Thank you so much for sharing. Well edited with lots of great information.
i want to buy watercolor supplies especially brushes... the only problem is the brushes.. I don't know how to buy brushes either that brush is good or not ... and one more thing i dont know what brush number i will buy.... so i need your help☺☺☺
+Pauline Bello always look for brushes that are designed to handle water/ watercolours. Synthetic brushes are generally the way to go. As for size I recommend starting off with something for fine detail (size 2 or smaller) a general size like 6 or 8 and then something a little larger if you're planning on doing large washes of colour (size 10 or 12). That's of course specifically talking about round brushes.
I do mainly acrylic so I need stiffer brushes.. I have been told if it feels soft enough to apply make up with then it is better for water colors..softer brushes dont push acrylic around too well and I was sad the first pack of brushes I bought were very soft, lol.. Now I am glad to have them since I'm wanting to experiment with the water colors so it was a happy accident after all
STAY AWAY FROM THE ARTIST'S LOFT BRUSHES!
idk bout u but i start off with three sizes, small, medium, and large so i wont have to switch between lots of brushes. go with 2, 6, and 10.
I'm wanting to get into watercolors and this video was very helpful since I know absolutely nothing about watercolors..like I did not know the difference between a watercolor pad and a block(something good to know for future reference)..the only experience I had with watercolors was in grade school and I disliked those SO much, they were horrid..but I'm learning that there's much more to watercolors and I've seen some beautiful art done with them..thanks for this video it was very helpful to me 😊
If you can't afford watercolor paper you can use a canson regular sketchbook, the pages are not THAT resistant to water but you can paint without problem. And depend of the sizes of the sketchbook you can take it everywhere you go 😁 I do this and have watercolor paper for paintings that people ask me to do for them or something like that, but that depends of you✌
thx for the input, I'm going the cheap, cheap and cheap route and so far have been very impressed and that's with my junky set up, can't wait to dive into as I go further and get nicer paints. thx for the video, I will be picking up some winsor & nuetons in the future.
I love the Royal line of brushes!
Please do a art supply collection video!
Omg i just bought this watelcorol paper and this video popped on my recomendation 😂
Instead of masonite, because even I'm not sure where to get that, one of my other favourite yt artist made hers out of foam core (also called foam board in Australia) and laminated it in clear packing tape. I did this myself and it works perfectly, it's cheap, and it's waterproof! Plus you can make some in different sizes, like A4 or A3.
Your channel is just so incredible! 😊 seriously, you deserve way more subscribers
+madi donna thank you 😊
I've not been catching up to art stuff (BTS and wattpad is corrupting me.) and completely forgot these supplies had even existed, thank you for making this video! And this is very useful for someone new to watercolor like me. :D
Awkward Trash can Why can I relate so much?
Oml, I relate so much right now since bighit dropped the Love Yourself Highlight Reels.
Your nearest Can iam so excited for their new comeback 😊❤
You're a Filipino?
A tip for anyone who may not know, if you draw with a graphite pencil band you don't want the lines before you paint dab white or blue tac (I am from the UK so I am not sure if it is called different else where) over your lines and it lifts the graphite up without actually erasing the lines!
amazing video but every good things for art is so expensive and when you are teen or child it's so hard to get these pretty guys. But the winson&newton palet is amazing! My friend have it and I'm in love with these palet!
I've been painting with watercolor for a while now and I might need to get that color wheel for traveling. I'm not a big fan of cakes either but it would be nice just to grab and take with a water brush.
+Haruka Nanase yeah, the Sakura Koi pallets are great to travel with too if you're really not into the cakes. Not as compact but still really good. I'm not sure about the smaller size pallets but the 24 colour one has space to fit the parts of a water brush into.
This was so useful, thank you so much
+AveryNoodle glad it helped! :)
I use mixed media XL canson paper and it works great
Thank you so much for this vid, I wanted to start painting but had no idea of what I needed😂😅
I loved the water colour wheel!!
Yesterday I was looking at upgrading my wc paints and at my local art store the range I want is Daniel Smith, sold individually, they start at 27$ and quickly go up, with the price quickly jumping, the most expensive 56. That's NZ$, in terms, NZ 1.0 equal to 1.5 US. I think there is close to 250 colours, amazing range, amazing colour, but do the math, it would be over 10k to have the range.
:0 for my water jug I use half of a water bottle so that I have those little ridges at the bottom that can clean the brushes. Also I just use an unopened picture frame covered with the original plastic as a pallete lmao
Wishing for more wishes I use random jars and a plastic binder divider😂
thanks for making the video! it's cool you included everything needed even what pros consider "obvious" like a container or some wood to put the paper on and be able to rotate the canvas etc.. things that beginners won't think of buying.
I use a clip board to clip and tape my paper to, easy to find and inexpensive. I gave a regular size one and a small one.
I'm sorry if I'm just not seeing the brand in the description, but what are the brushes? I bought some yesturday that are not like yours and they shed
+Angel Wales they're the Royal & Langnickel Soft-Grip Brushes.
Studio of M.M thank you!
You can find the XL watercolor at Walmart
Wow
What brand brushes do you like...I don't see brushes below your great video? Thanks.
+Constance Hildebrand they are actually listed; they're the Royal & Langnickel Soft Grip Brushes
I agree with ball point pen because I used it once when my pigment liner wasn't working
this was such a helpful video!! thank you so much!
Those brushes the blue end ones you can buy them in Ryman’s if you live in Uk they are £2.50 each
Now i have to wait for Christmas/ birthday so I can get more money to buy this stuff. Man I can't wait until I get a job.
thats so awesome! i will try that sooner haha, the color wheel is much useful for me, thank you for this. 😊
i like how the brushes are clear! where can i find those exact brushes?
+Sel you might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else depending on where you're from but here's a set of them on amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00114LQPC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1462745964&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=royal+langnickel+soft+grip&dpPl=1&dpID=51ga9yCxfzL&ref=plSrch
thank you!
The only watercolour things I have is the actual watercolour itself (a professional one) and the thing is I live in the U.K. Where there is very little choice of art supplies and they are very expensive
I use mixed media canson sketch books because it thicc enough to work for watercolours and I can use all my other weird mediums.
I'm okay at oil and acrylic but I'm so clueless when it comes to watercolours O^O Can I use my acrylic brushes for watercolour?
+Last Survivor it depends on the type of brush; some synthetic brushes that are generally meant for acrylic paint can also work with watercolour but the main key to actual watercolour brushes is their ability to hold and disperse the water and pigment. Other types of brushes will just soak it all up like a sponge which is not what you want to have happen, haha.
How do you replace watercolor pans when you ran out of paint? Do you buy another set or just buy each piece pf color?
+ugh nonymous you can buy the tubed version of the same colour and refill the pan; just let the paint dry and it's as good as new. Some companies do sell the pan refills but it's much easier to find the tubes and do it yourself.
I use the koi water color travel set and I love it it's like 20-25$ US at hobby lobby
Watercolor for beginners (recommends winsor newton watercolor) Ksksksk a good substitute is the koi watercolor set get in many sizes or gansai tanmbi set also available in many sizes ;)
Helen Serrano gansai tambai are not considered watercolors.
thank you this is SO helpful!
Can you use mixed media paper
Catqueen 2107 you can, theoretically. However, watercolor paper is the best to use, watercolor paper won’t leak through!
My cheapest (yet best bang for your buck) is Canson XL watercolor paper, you can get a 9x12 pad of 30 sheets for about 6$ US! I personally LOVE this paper and it’s super cheap! Good luck!
@@mattm.6969 thanks
Loved your video. So helpful and to the point ❤️❤️
thank you!
Hi! I need recommendations for Art Supplies. My budget is 200 dollars and the stuff I need are sketch pencils (9H to 9B+) Sketch pads/books, Marker/skin tone markers, Gelly roll pens, Drawing pens, Erasers, and watercolor paints (pans)
thank you in advance ;3
SuTech Gaming you can usually go to art stores and get individual drawing pencils.
I would say for the markers, the tombows are fairly inexpensivebut water soluble, but you can also get flesh tone markers on amazon. For the watercolors, a 12 set of cotman or maybe a koi set. Paper is fairly inexpensive.
I would say go look on amazon, there's some really good deals. It's where I get everything but my paper.
Great video. Tons of information. Thank you for doing this.
+prorizo glad it helped! :)
It's a great video! I learnt a lot! now. Now I have a better idea what to get for my new hobby. Was just thinking... what about watercolour pencils? do I like colour with them then add water using the paint brush?
Ur videos r VERY VERY VERY helpful
luv ur profile photo with kookie in it XD
I'm so jealous . In my country I've never ever seen a watercolor wheel before
Plus everything good must be shipped from the internet and it's so expensive . Being a young artist in Asia is hard
this was such a helpful video, thank you!!!
+Desiree Franz glad you found it helpful :)
Love the information here very useful.
Thanks for the tutorial.. Good suggestions!
Such a great and professional video! *-*
I got really nervous when you said about ball points being waterproof cause the last time my notes got wet and yep, they spread
+Honesty_JustMe Alone it might have something to do with the paper because standard ball point pen after it's set on watercolour paper isn't going to budge when you paint over it.
Okay... thanks
Cool, I have that watercolor wheel, and for 4€ it works pretty amazing ( I just started out with watercolor so I'm trying not to spend a lot )
extra tip: if you dont want pencil sketch lines showing through try sketching in watercolor pencil because it completely diffuses with water
Great video for begginers no fanci 30 dollar arches as a requirement for beginner
You ARE really awesome! I ❤️ this video. Great job...
+shawn alfonsi thank you 😊
This helped so much thank you
can you use mix media paper for watercolors?
Of course, its mixed media so it can take many art suppliues
+Yanniek H yes, just be aware that it's not as thick as watercolour paper so it has the possibility of warping more.
Yanniek H duh it says "mixed!!"
I just subbed. I am starting with the watercolor wheel, tit's koh-i-noor from Amazon, and I got a 3 pk of waterbrushes. I am wondering what you think of the super cheap 25 Lowe-Cornell wc brush set...its so inexpensive, if ten of them were good, it would be worth it, but I dont want shedding. I dont have a major craft store where I live so I rely on YT reviews. Do you know anything about those large bundles where the price is ridiculously low?
+TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV unfortunately I haven't tried them so I can't really say whether they're good or not but I would be concerned about shedding. That's why I always recommend the Royal & Langnickel soft grip brushes; they are a great cross between affordability and quality. They aren't as inexpensive as the cheap multi brush packs but they'll last you quite some time and I've never had an issue with shedding.
Do you have a video on the different grades on Winsor and Newton Pans?
I want an old art brush that has a soft brush, but old stained handel...I like old used things XD(art-sewing)
I suggest Prang Watercolors to any beginners!
thanks for the video now I need painting lessons lol
Bought a fan travel design watercolor paint set on Amaozn brand " fuumuui" , it feels good.
Thanks for the great video, very useful for a beginner like me. If it's not too much to ask, I know it's kinda late but, may I know what the sizes and types are for the brushes you are holding up at 5:33?
+dorito life the brushes are all round type Royal & Langnickel soft grip brushes in (I believe) sizes 2, 6, 10 and 14. The soft grip brushes come in all the size increments of normal brush ranges though.
Okay, thank you! :)
Hello! I'm pretty confused on what number and type (ex. Flat, round, etc,.) of brush should I buy. What brush type/number can you recommend for beginners like me? Thank you! 😊
+Krizza Bucsit I'd say go for all round brushes to start unless you think you're really going to get use out of a flat brush. As for sizes, I'd recommend something fairly small (0 or 2) to have to do fine details, a good all over brush like a 6 and maybe something larger like a 10 or 12 for washes. I guess it depends on how many brushes you want to look at getting to start with.
Thank you so much for your reply! Looking forward to see more of your art works 😊😊
Bottom thing to clean your brush…. That is a plate for hama beads. Uhh, I only have a star shaped one😂 it will do. Great tip.
Thanks u ...very good tips u GV helps me ....
Xl medias sketchbook can be used for acrylic and water color
Can journals be useful for watercolor?
+HoiImKat! // Skin Maker,Skin Shader definitely! Just make sure you get one that has paper suitable for wet media.
Studio of M.M If I were a kid can I use some watercolor that aren't koi and winsor & Newton water colors?
+HoiImKat! // Skin Maker,Skin Shader of course! You can use whatever you want to; they were just my recommendations.
Studio of M.M thx a lot also sorry if I ask to much question
CHU R THE BEST UA-camR IN WATERCOLOR LIKE EVER THX IMA SUBCRIBE TO CHU FOR MORE
hopefully this doesn't sound stupid but, what do you mean by "Morphing?"
+ScarLet Rose time stamp? Assuming that I was talking about the paper I meant that when you add water to the page it expands the fibres in the sheet therefore morphing or warping the page (it can bubble up and curve at the edges).
Awesome video!!! shows good content! looking forward to see more! ;) keep up the good work!
+Monkei Vais thanks!
Sharpies are waterproof to an extent. I used them for a while and whenever I went over the marker with water a few timed it smudged
are sakura koi watercolors good?
Yuliana Maldonado they're just a student-grade watercolor. Better than the crayola or prang, so pretty good to start with. :)
woot woot ooooh ok ok thank you! but its still worth it right?
I haven't tried them out, so I can't say. I'm really sorry :(
woot woot oh its okay, thank you though!
I really dislike Koi but thats because I have high expectations from watercolors. Koi paints are pretty good for a beginner, you can also consider Cotman (by Winsor and newton) as your first watercolors. Anyway, these two are the cheapest and probably best sets to start with.
