i ended up watching this longer than i expected, what so great about watching kids spelling words that i can barley spell at my age. idk. but i love it
Hardest word I know (By the way I'm in one of the most hardest spelling bees and the judges told me to spell the word they said. Also 45 letters long):P-n-e-u-m-o-n-o-u-l-t-r-a-m-i-c-r-o--s-c-o-p-i-c-s-i-l-i-c-o-v-o-l-c-a-n-o-c-o-n-i-o-s-i-s Meaning:Lung disease caused by inhaling silca dust
TheVloggingGamers • Actually, the word is very easy. You just have to divide the word into different sections. Like this: Pneumono•ultra•microscopic•silico•volcano•coniosis
TheVloggingGamers • microscopic, volcano and ultra is very easy to spell since it's pretty common in English dictionary. The rest of the word is pretty odd which are coniosis, silica and pneumono.
+Jamie B Agreed, the time the word seersucker was up he pronounced it incorrectly, he said "sear" not seer. There is a difference between "ee" and "ea". Also, who here is British and or otherwise, for Americans spell armour, armor, just want the opinion of other people on this, I believe it is foolish to break off of the general English speaking areas. But I guess breaking off is the American tendency.
I'm from Germany and it's so funny how they struggle with the German words because for me it's totally logical how to spell them! I didn't even know that there are so much words in the English language that are of German origin :D Backstein, Lederhosen and Poltergeist were the best! :D
The ultimate icing on the cake of this hilarious spelling bee is the winner Stephen's prize "Where does he get to go" "Well he gets to go to the gaylord hotel.." To which, Stephen couldn't help letting out a little smirk
+DarkBungleX Don't be sending little kids to the Gaylord Hotel. There may be a NAMBLA convention there. When the kids grow up they can explore that stuff. But only if they want to!
At one hour thirty three minutes-ish, she says "babbladive," and spells it "b-a-b-b-l-a-d-i-v-e." She is incorrect, and the judges didn't eliminate her.
Im a filipino, and this specific word can be translated in english which also know as oar fish, didnt have an idea that dictionary accepted it already as dugong.
FromHyrule HELL YESSS! the girl before him spelled hella hard words right then she had to go mess up with a word such as Tilapia. he got all the baby words
Tbh the spelling bee is terrible since serious competitive kids are placed mainly under the pressure of their parents to win...i remember i panicked and my tongue slipped missing out in an E in a basic word in regionals and my mum was so angry when i got back...
I have a spelling bee tomorrow but since I'm in advanced, they are doing like 7th grade words on me (I'm in 5th grade) so, I came here to study the words the middle school kids are doing.
I HATE SPELLING BEES! The reasons I hate the spelling bee is that the English language never really had a standardized spelling. Like all languages, the letters of the alphabet were phonetic in nature but English is a language made up of many foreign words so "phonetic" (a Greek word) gets into the language and for some reason "ph" is used to spell the word when spelling it as "Fonetik" can produce the same results. When the English language started to be formalized these weird spellings and foreign words became fixed in the language. Another reason I think Spelling Bees are bullshit is that it is won by kids, usually Asians who just memorize the dictionary. Memorizing does not make you smart. A lot has been said about Asians scoring high on tests but really, the reason this happens is that Asians (who come from highly bureaucratic cultures) just memorize the test. This kind of thinking does not lead to free thinking, individualized thinking or innovative thinking. I think a better contest would be to have the students DEFINE what the word means rather than just spell it. Who cares, for example, how you spell 'dystopia' (distopia misspelling produces the same pronounciation of the word for example) - what is important is "can you define what the word means?"
MarvelDcImage In that case, the majority of things we learn in school is memorization. History dates, the reactions in organic chemistry, you name it - all of which we spit out on exams and forget a few weeks or even a few days later. Free thinking, individualized thinking, or innovative thinking are not limited by this competition. Of course, they're dedicating their time to this. However, if they were born with a creative mind, that's not going to change whether they choose to compete in this or not. Just means they have less time to dedicate to more creative things, or should I say, watching TV? Most 14 year olds spend their free time relaxing. These kids are using their brains. You don't know what these kids do outside of this competition. I'm sure Gokul and Vanya are well-rounded individuals. Vanya's sister who is currently a sophomore at Columbia also won this competition. Asians can't get into schools like Columbia by ONLY getting high standardized test scores. You can't be good at math simply by learning an exam. It requires logic and reasoning and Asians tend to excel in the subject. Math, physics, and those subjects that ultimately build one into jobs like engineering I would say are the most creative jobs out there. Unlike people who get high positions through connections and blabbering nonsense, pretending they actually know something.
MarvelDcImage Memorizing is a skill, just like athletics is a skill. Some train their brain, others train their body. You're not going to write an email and use a word you don't know the meaning of. You are however, going to encounter words you know how to say, but can't spell. I agree that knowing the meaning of the actual word would be a better contest. I disagree with the inherent bias you have toward Asians. If you went to India, you would have a difficult time getting a 70% on exams because those tests aren't designed for people who simply memorize. If you want to criticize an education system, you should start with America. If Asians weren't creative, you wouldn't have Western people worshipping things like anime, kpop, etc. Don't blame Asians for being hard workers. Tests like the SAT do indeed correlate with IQ.
Can't believe I watched this whole thing. I feel like such a geek lol.
you are lol
I can't believe you did either. Literally. I don't believe you.

Not difficult, but good job anyway.
+Yousaf Khan that would be hard to think of off the top of your head though
TheVloggingGamers • Actually, the word is very easy. You just have to divide the word into different sections. Like this: Pneumono•ultra•microscopic•silico•volcano•coniosis

Yup they definitely read and study the whole dictionary much less the entire library
The pronouncer is so nice! He said sorry and sir! :O
They got a few t's mistaken for d's because Americans pronounce t's as d's
Sometimes.
+Josiah Ray Yeah.
+Josiah Ray you made your point clear, gj :D
