    Release material (放生齋)
A Buddhist ritual of releasing captured or trapped fish or animals.
Releasing is in contrast to killing. If abstaining from killing is keeping the precepts, releasing is putting the precepts into practice. Also, if abstaining from killing is a passive good deed, releasing one's life is a positive good deed. Bangsaengjae is usually held on March 3rd and August 15th of the lunar calendar, but its origin is unclear.
Today, this release material is often confused with amphibious material. Most of today's release rites are performed by releasing fish into the river and releasing them, but at some point, the character 'water' was emphasized in Suryukjae, and as the rites were performed at the riverside or the beach, the two rites came to be considered the same.
However, Suryukjae has the meaning of holding a ceremony for the soul of Yuju (有住) and Muju (無住) in a place with clear water or a clean mountain stream. Bangsaengjae is a ritual given by releasing the lives taken by others in order to more actively practice compassion-based practice, so its purpose is fundamentally different.
Jeokseokdoin (赤石道人) divides the merits of release into seven categories as follows. First, those who have no children must be released. Because giving life to others is necessarily giving birth to myself, so if I give birth, I will have the blessing of having many men and children. Second, if you become pregnant, be sure to release the child. Because, if you protect the life of all things by releasing them, the mother will be protected. Third, when praying, be sure to give birth. This is because the merit of releasing a person while praying is great. Fourth, if you want to perform the Yesusae (預修齋), do the releasing first. Because, if you are released and touched by Buddha Bodhisattva, you will definitely receive great blessings. Fifth, when it comes to making money, be free from it. Sixth, when seeking blessings, also give birth. Seventh, when chanting the Buddha, also give birth.
The spirit of release is the spirit of mercy, and in order to actively spread the spirit of mercy, release is performed, and this kind of release is made into a ritual called Bangsaengjae. The ritual procedure for releasing saengjae is generally to first perform a ritual to purify the place where it is to be released, i.e., the river if it is a fish or the mountain if it is a mountain animal, then the fish or beast is released, and they are reborn in another body by the great divine power of the Buddha Bodhisattva. It ends with a vow to become a Buddhist disciple.
Prayer refers to the act of attempting to communicate with a god or a deified object, or the act of requesting something from a god. Prayer performed within a ceremony is also called worship.
In the case of Buddhism, prayer is an act of 'effort to turn one's eyes inward', that is, an act of abandoning one's greed and stubbornness, setting a wish to realize a happy world for all, and making an effort to achieve it.
Prayer is a form of human behavior that attempts to communicate with God or a sacred object. It usually takes the form of a series of sacred, spirit-filled words for the purpose of seeking direction, asking for help, confessing a sin, or expressing one's feelings, or one's thoughts about God. The actions of expressing one's will can be collectively considered 'prayer'.
Outwardly, the person praying takes the form of a monologue or silent prayer performed silently. In addition to words, there are also cases where it is accompanied by physical actions or postures such as closing the eyes, putting your hands together, lying down, or walking in a certain area. Prayer can be done individually or in groups. Words used in prayer take the form of hymns, incantations, or other spontaneous utterances.
