      It’s a tough watch. I always say to myself “just leave the order, Ani, take Padme and your kids and get the hell out of there, it’s not worth it.”
      Anakin has been my favorite character since I was a kid and seeing him lose everything when he was so close to having his family and defeating the sith is just heartbreaking. The novelization somehow makes it even worse. It’s a great movie but very difficult to watch for that reason.

    I think episode 1 is absolutely necessary for the Prequel trilogy. Not only does it show us what the Jedi were and how they were supposed to be, but it shows us so much more.
    It explains where Anakin came from, shows the trauma of being separateed from his mother at a young age and shows that he didn't start out evil or dark. An impression you could certainly get from just watching episode 2 & 3.
    Also it explains where the Separatist movement came from, because of the way the republic treats Naboo. They did nothing but watch as a whole planet was invaded by the trade federation.

    • @MancoDanko
      @MancoDanko 7 днів тому +1

      Another major important addition is the theme of the whole saga begins with Episode 1. When Qui-Gon explains what midichlorians are it reinforces why Obi-Wan believes it would suite the Gungans to work with the land people of Naboo, “you both form a symbiotic circle, without one will affect the other you must understand this” (Kenobi).
      Now apply that very definition of symbionts, a mutual advantage of two organisms and apply it in every battle of every film. In the Death Star trench run you have X-Wings (fighters) and Y-Wing bombers. A gold and red team. In Empire you have land troops with speeders and in Endor its ground troops and space troops that try to stop Dwath Star II. In the Prequels you have Naboo with the Naboo guards being in the palace while Gungans are the distraction for the droid army. In Episode II both Obi and Ani try to stop Dooku. Episode III is even more obvious with the fight between Obi V Ani and Yoda V Emperor.
      Notice that once separated Anakin is more prone to fall to his weakness and requires someone to help control his temptation for more power.

    51:29 It is *definitely* not just you. I always get that same exact feeling right before Anakin cuts Mace's hand off. Every time I watch Episode 3 and get to this part, I catch myself hoping that Anakin will make the right choice this time, despite it all. But when he screams his "NO!" and unfailingly commits to the action that cements his downfall, I become just as heartbroken as I was when I first saw the movie as a kid.
    Maybe it's Hayden's incredible facial expression acting that creates that uncertainty in me on what Anakin is going to do. His inner conflict is so palpable in that moment. Whatever the reason though, that personal feeling you described makes the scene a highlight of Episode 3 for me.

    The first time I sat in the theater for "Episode I", I was only expecting the story of Anakin, but then I heard, "... Senator Palpatine is waiting for us"; and since I read the "Star Wars" novelization when I was a kid, I KNEW that he was the Emperor in the OT; at that moment, I had just become completely invested in the politics of Star Wars! I had always wondered how Palpy became Emperor, and I was FINALLY going to find out! So many people complain about the "boring politics", but it's what I looked forward to the most in each movie. He was such a beautifully magnificent, conniving bastard!
    The ST is garbage through and through. Each movie retcons the last! They misunderstood The Force, character relationships, and stupidly gave Stormtroopers a face in Finn (and a small band in IX) only to want us to continue to cheer for their deaths (even though they were kidnapped as children and brainwashed)! It proves that GL did indeed bring more to the table than people give him credit for.

    Here’s the thing with the whole “give the sequels a few years. It took everyone a while to warm up to the prequels”. The prequels at their core, are good movies. They have good stories, with amazing world building. They suffer from over use of CGI and poor script. The sequels are flawed movies at their core. They rarely make sense as plots. They copy paste the originals. And do more pandering to social issues than telling good stories. The characters are terribly written. The action is mindless and boring. And it actively disrespects beloved Star Wars characters either to make way for their new poorly written characters, or simply to bash them.

    • @tau-5794
      @tau-5794 Рік тому +7

      It's funny that ppl always talk about the cgi in the prequels, when they in fact used more models and miniatures in each movie than the entire original trilogy, and have fewer computer generated shots than the sequels. The core issue with the sequels is that they are not continuations of the star wars story, they're just boring Sci fi flicks with a star wars paint job and nostalgia bait. There is no continuity between films and everything that was once important is thrown away and "useless" unless it can be used for yet more nostalgia bait or trying to overcorrect from the previous film.

    • @michaelguernsey1206
      @michaelguernsey1206 Рік тому

      @@tau-5794 while you are completely right, for me, the script issues, logic issues, and massive plot holes in the stories themselves (obviously that ties into the continuity issues) are the biggest issues for me. That’s kinda what I mean by fundamentally flawed at their core.

    • @noobmaster69426
      @noobmaster69426 6 місяців тому +2

      The prequels are better than the sequels and it’s not even a fucking question. Both have their flaws, but the sequels have more flaws. At least the prequels have a story we care about, better characters, better choreography, better world building, and better writing. The sequels have terrible writing. Their use of characters is god awful, the story is a mess, and all they did was plagiarize the OT. If you’re making a sequel/remake, then it has to have some sense of originality. Its like saying lion king 2019 is good because it copies itself, when it’s the stupidest thing said because it lacks originality and as I’ve said before, if you’re making a remake, it has to have some originality. The sequels have awful characters as well like Rey is truly the WORST character in Star Wars. No offense to Ridley, she’s a good actress. I’m blaming all the problems on JJ, Rian, Kathleen, and the writers.

    You’re wrong about the assassination attempt being a plot hole. It makes no sense that they would’ve just fired a rocket into her room causing a huge uproar in the Galaxy with crusades to find her murderer. Every attempt on her life was made to look like an unfortunate incident so it didn’t look like a murder. The bombing of her ship was made out to look like a mechanical malfunction, if you pay attention the explosions come from the engines. Then the centipedes were made to look like a couple of pests just happened to get into her room and kill her.

    Star Wars fans are so bad , because they don‘t love the franchise for the right reasons. The original trilogy was special for only 3 reasons : innovative (but now outdated) practical effects, the iconic score & Lucas‘ unique vision. Everything else is basic AF,as far as movie making is concered. And the prequels contain MUCH more of Lucas’ vision, and some of the best score ever made. You should LOVE the prequels.But no, you fans get caught up in minutia.

    On the topic of them trying to gas the Jedi, I think it is helpful to remember there are only a few thousand Jedi in the entire galaxy. A lot of novels make it super super clear that most of the galaxy really has no clue what the Jedi are or what they do. They just kind of hear second hand stories and legends and assume they are some vague monk wizards and continue on trying to make their way in the galaxy.

    • @occam7382

      That's probably what also helped the Jedi fall into obscurity after the Rise of the New Order. Most people didn't really know a whole lot about the Jedi, so it was pretty easy for the Empire to control information about them, and basically write them out of history. Except when they needed to be painted as the bad guys, of course.

    Palpatine siphoned Padme's life force out of her body and into Vader. This was possible due to their intimate personal connection. He couldn't have done it to someone useless like Jar-Jar, even if he didn't want to kill Padme anyway. This is a very mysterious and dark power. It's the secret of Darth Pelagius' life-saving magic, thus explaining why such a benevolent power would be a dark side power. It's literal psychic vampirism, and it's revealed at the very end of the last-made movie in a remarkably subtle way.

    Because the Jedi would sense something as clumsy as a bomb. They deal with weapons like that all the time. Gas is stealthier. Furthermore...
    "Have you ever encountered a Jedi Knight before, sir?"
    "Well no but I don't..."
    It's spelled out in the dialogue. Seriously, people overlook things that are made blatantly obvious by the script. There's no flaw in the logic. Nute Gunray was working with what little knowledge he had of Jedi and that knowledge was still enough to terrify him. Trying the stealthy approach before resorting to blasters was the smartest decision he could make, especially in a state of panic.

    The force speed inconsistency is because you drain your energy when you use that fore power. Obi-Wan likely didn't think Qui-Gon would be defeted. He assumed he would need all of the advantages he could get, and using a lot of energy for a force run, wouldn't have seemed like a good use of energy.

    • @MrZackavelli
      @MrZackavelli 3 роки тому +8

      Plus, when they used force speed in the beginning, there was nothing but open hallway. There was a gaping bottomless pit that Obi-Wan could've sprinted right into in the final fight.
      When you think about it, Obi-Wan has to go as fast as he can so he can beat the laser gates, but then he has to immediately come to a screeching halt if he actually makes it past the laser gates. Looking at the boots that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are wearing, you see there is absolutely no traction on them. You can actually see Obi-Wan sliding on the surface when he stops before that final laser gate.
      Force sprinting in those boots on a linoleum floor with a bottomless pit right in front of you would be suicide.
      This definitely would've happened:

      @myniggasimtoofly8411 First of all, I don't know what your point is bringing up Obi-Wan's leap over Maul. What does that have to do with anything? What Yoda meant when he said he failed is that he never allowed the Jedi Order to change in the hundreds of years that he’s been a Master. The Sith had evolved whereas the Jedi had stagnated. The Sith had been planning this for a long time, whereas the Jedi had only trained to fight the last battle.
    Also, Luke’s new Jedi Order will be more inclusive, and allow Jedi to marry and have children. Having attachments isn’t a bad thing, it’s just that people’s feelings need to be managed in a healthy way. Luke finds a healthy middle ground in that regard. The new Jedi will spend a lot more time among the people throughout the galaxy unlike the Jedi of the prequel Order. That way the new Jedi build connections and trust with the average people throughout the galaxy, causing people to view them in a more positive light.

    Harping on the initial criticism of the Phantom Menace opening and some other stuff.
    You wouldn't detonate a bomb inside your own ship to kill 2 people. You'd have to get the yield just right that you would maim or kill both but not damage your ship and cause any compromise or have it too high and just decide to eat the damage.
    Poisoned dead jedi are easier to handwave away as an accident or them getting into trouble and framing it. Exploding two emissaries is very messy and the lack of bodies cause concern and a follow up investigation.
    If they know Jedi are super skilled supernatural warriors then locking them behind blast doors and leaving them in a poisoned filled room for a long time guarantees a kill (the movie does a poor job of showing time passing). Even if they are not dead they are likely poisoned and the droids will finish them.
    Obi-wan isn't left because reasons. He's fixing the ship and protecting it AND THE QUEEN (although they don't know its Padme body double).

    TPM shows why Anakin is so important, his strong attachment to his mom, why Obi-Wan wasn't right teacher to him, why he hates Tatooine, Jedi rules, Palpatine becoming chancellor, world building, etc...And of course, podracing and Darth Maul.
    AOTC actually tells a great story (Palpatine's rise to power by manipulation Republic and Separatists, Anakin's progression of falling to the Dark Side, start of the Clone Wars), develops characters, shows us real war, new planets, species, ships, droids, world, and has strong connection with 1 and 3.
    What does ROTS show us? The largest battle in the Clone Wars, deaths of Dooku and Grievous, Kashyyk battle, Anakin's conflict with Jedi and himself, his weakness (save who he loves), which perfectly works with saving Luke, Palpatine's manipulation and rise to power, Order 66, 2 amasing final battles and the creation of Darth Vader and Empire, birth of Luke and Leia, new hope. It is the most meaningful for the whole Galaxy and is the most emotional.

    PM: Maul's death is more important than one could primarily think. It's the reason why Obi Wan is made Jedi Knight with no Jedi Trials needed.
    AOTC: The important thing about romance scenes between Padmé & Anakin is the biblical symbolism. They're in Eden Garden (Naboo) so they eat the forbidden fruit which brings their condemnation. This is even explicitly depicted in the scene where Anakin makes what seems to be a pear to levitate. By the way thinking of Padmé being more badass than Leia is not crazy at all. Even Obi Wan says she is on top things. Pitty her character has so many deleted scenes.
    ROTS: The Jedi Temple recordings aren't enough proof to challenge Palpatine's assertion of the Jedi Order attempting a coup against the Senate. The Senate already was pretty corrupted by Palpatine at the time. Even Windu realized this in the end. Concerning Padmé I don't think she dies because of heartbreaking. That's not consistent with she almost swearing there still is good in Anakin in her last words. Still why is Padmé's life supposed to be stolen and not willingly given?
    Anyway, the important plot holes and the more merchandising approach didn't start in prequels but in ROTJ. Search your feelings. You know it is true.

Great video. 👍 (god I'm old) I should also note I keep watching the prequels over the OG trilogy because I watched the original trilogy before the "Special" special editions. Like Yoda said Fear lead to hate,hate lead to suffering and suffering lead to the dark side pretty sums up revenge of the Sith to Anakin his fear of losing Padme,his hate for the Jedi, suffering by losing his limbs being burn alive and Padme death and the dark side being Darth Vader.

    here are my brief thoughts on the prequels
    episode 1: this movie makes a lot of sense in hindsight. george wanted to show what the galaxy was like before the Clone Wars. but he also wanted to include things that every Star Wars movie has like a lightsaber duel, a big space battle, and old planets so it's the perfect slow start to Star Wars, a Star Wars starter pack if you will.
    episode 2 is just an average summer action movie. I think many elements of the story drag and the Naboo love scenes are more boring than cringy. but I love the Obi-Wan side of the story i love the part where he gets captured by Dooku that scene is ripe for "What If" scenarios. and the final battle that kicks off the Clone Wars is really fun to watch.
    Episode 3: this is the only movie that is legitimately necessary. it fills in all the holes from episode 4. This movie is paced the best out of the three. the middle drags a tad but it doesn't matter because Grievous dying and the Order 66 section make it so worth it the final battles between yoda the Emperor and Anakin and Obi-Wan are top-notch better than the Maul fight in my opinion. this movie is peak star wars

The Clone Wars were also very fleshed out back then, with an entire multimedia project, not just the micro-series.

    The Phantom Menace is Padme's movie but the prequels are Palpatine's trilogy. It could also be argued its Palpatine's movie seeing as he is the title.
    The prequels are a masterpiece though. The fact that you miss the trope of the snake/insect for assassination just says you dont know enough to properly criticize these films. Not only that but if you do something that resolves the story a full film early in a six part saga then it's a shite idea and shouldn't be done. Not to mention that in a city of constant surveillance doing something over the top such as shooting into a senator's window or firing explosives then you are getting caught and suck as an assassin.

    I have some: what if Leia's transport wasn't exactly above Tatooine so she could send Artoo and Threepio out? What if Obi-Wan didn't show up in time to save Luke from the Tusken Raiders? What if Han and Chewie didn't arrive in time to save Luke from being shot down by Vader in the trench? What if Luke didn't pull his lightsaber out of the snow in time to save himself from the Wampa? What if Luke didn't make it out of the Death Star in time with Vader's body?

    I think in one of the Clone Wars episodes, Palpatine says how those hologram thingies could be faked when the pirates were asking for payment when they showed Count Dooku in a hologram so I guess against the more obvious “scar” that was left on Palpatine, the “hologram” of two Jedi claiming otherwise would just be seen as deceitful considering also how much the senate has also seemed to have a positive disposition about Palpatine proclaiming himself as emperor with thunderous applause.
    Although I dunno maybe it is a plothole. I agree though, these movies aren’t SUPER bad, they’re good enough and even though I’ve watched all 9 movies, as a kid who grew up with the prequels, Revenge of the Sith will always be my favorite. 😂

And Jake did a great job in context, Ep 1 serves as the intro to Anakin, and he is so innocent and sweet and naive, which makes it tragic when you remember this little kid becomes Darth Vader, rarely in media do we see a villain start as a hero and see their childhood unless it’s a short flashback, mostly they are shown as adults.

    So, this trilogy was hitting theaters around the time I was hitting high school. Duel of the Fates had hit Napster hard, and the hype was up. Fundamentally, the first film missed a lot of notes it NEEDED to land in order to make the next two succeed. I went into all three movies with a certain level of expectation. After the first one, I set them lower, and I found the next two pleasurable. Were they on par with the OT, hell no.
    Therin lies the problem. People expected it to meet if not exceed the original films. When each one was a "Don't get your hopes up to high", yet they were marketing it as a masterpiece, the discord between the audience and anyone involved with the creation, whether actor or director, was getting torn to shreds.
    I feel as though these films are being more accepted now as opposed to before is because we saw the sequel trilogy...wait, no, what I meant to say is that time has passed and people can put their emotions aside. They really aren't the most terrible films, but I feel as though, as Lucas got older, he didn't remember how to write these characters. These were all new characters, minus Obi-Wan and Palpatine (I'm not uncluding Anakin as writing Anakin pre-turn is different from Darth Vader). Between that and the expanded lore that he signed off on, sort of boxed in what he could do that would keep everything in cannon.
    Lastly, as far as the midoclorians, I remember people speculating and writing about anything Star Wars related on the internet. In 99', I remember reading a script that labeled Mustafar as the final fight that left Anakin near death. I also remember a document that listed midoclorians and the suspected levels of midoclorians of Jedi mentioned in the OT. So, when midoclorians popped up in the first film, I was confused that no one really knew about this. Prior to then I hadn't paid attention to the EU so I thought that they were introduced in a different medium.
    Speaking of the EU, while we had that in the books prior to them, the different spin-off shows helped to provide context and character growth that you could not capture within the trilogy alone. So, being able to see the events of the clone wars, the politics, and the cunning of he who would become emperor. Fleshing that period out definitely helps it in a modernized lense.

Plus yes it serves to get Obi AWAY from Anakin, same with Kashyyk for Yoda, thus the only Jedi he can turn to is Mace, who this film establishes well doesn’t have good relationship with Anakin, this leaves him basically isolated and open to Palpatine’s manipulations.

    Allow me to enumerate the reasons I felt back then like the prequels were bad, I'm curious what everybody else (especially millennials who don't remember the OT but did see the prequels in the theater) has to say about my opinions.
    - If you hadn't waited since 83, it would be hard to fathom the profound excitement of anticipation that had built up; it was literally overwhelming. 16 agonizing years of silence, not even knowing if it would ever happen at all. Looking back, I think the greatest movie ever made would not have ended up feeling like a disappointment to those of us who waited so long. Add to that the fact that Lucas, true to his vision, "took the risk" of making it more about politics than anything else, which definitely deflated the excitement. Plus, the Jar Jar ridiculousness, overuse of silliness that would have enhanced things in a smaller dose, and the lack of danger posed by the battle droids. All this made for a lackluster feeling and set the trilogy up to be disliked by expectation.
    - To many of us who grew up with the OT, Hayden Christiansen just didn't feel right as Anakin/Vader. Combine that with the poor dialog he had to work with, the rushed plot, potentially bad directing, and his questionable portrayal of a deeply conflicted person. I feel like was a monumental task to portray this well; it would have taken only the best of the best actor to pull it off. Rather, it felt like he was chosen for his elite attractiveness rather than any elite acting ability. I'd love to see the audition tapes to compare him with the rest.
    - The new villians were not really woven into the existing story at all. IMO Dooku's role was left too ambiguous; was he really a former Jedi? How close was he actually to the Sith? We didn't really know at that time; it was all mostly implied by a few tidbits of dialogue. I'm aware that mysteriousness can add to a story, but for some reason I felt like it didn't work here. Maul and Grievous also came out of nowhere with almost zero backstory about who they were. As you said, they were there just to have sabre duels.
    - I can say with a fair amount of certainty that almost nobody welcomed the excessive CGI in AOTC. It just didn't feel real to those of us who grew up with the OT, who also pretty much universally hated that Lucas butchered that too. In particular it ruined Yoda, just destroyed his mystique.
    Back then, all of this overshadowed McGregor and Portman's mostly well done portrayals, McDiarmid's genius, and of course the brilliance of the music. Nobody back then could have imagined what it was like to not have a cohesive story; which we are painfully aware of now.
    For me, I've come to appreciate the generally decent writing with a cohesive story that doesn't completely invalidate so much of the original lore, now that I've seen the disaster Disney created. I thought many of the points you made here were redeeming as well, thank you.

    15:30 Obi Wan doesn't force run because the scene doesn't require it. Stop thinking about lore and revert back to a simple, cinematography mindset. Why would adding a shot of Obi Wan force running into the red blast barrier significantly change your view of the scene? The same exact situation would have resulted from it, so why insert a force move that doesn't alter the events of the action? Obi Wan is destined to helplessly watch his master die. Nothing could change that.

If the Trade Federation is a galactic corporate enterprise with offices and agents everywhere, then obviously they would have to maintain some level of face outside of Naboo. They can't just hunt down Jedi freaking Knights in the streets of Muniliist or Mygeeto. I maintain they could have landed on literally any planet other than Naboo or one of the Federation bases like Cato Nemoidea, any planet that accepts credits, and have absolutely no problem buying repairs and supplies. If they couldn't even land on a normal planet and get normal maintenace as part of their diplomatic mission from the Chancellor himself, then what power do the Jedi even have?

    I actually find the love scene stuff cringe worthy yet consistent with Star Wars as well as anakin as a character

    I agree The Star Wars Prequels are good, but not better than the Star Wars Originals. I'm a Gen Xer in my 40's so I watched the Original Trilogy on VHS when my parents got a VCR. So I'm one of those fans who watched the Prequels and thought: "Okay, these are good, but not great, and that's fine." I had certain assumptions about Obi-Wan before I saw Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. I knew Obi-Wan had to have been a quite active Jedi when he was younger, but I got the impression that he did finish his training and became a Knight and later a Master and he trained Anakin(according to old Obi-Wan in telling Luke on Dagobah) but after seeing The Phantom Meance the first time in a theater and seen him fight Maul in a lightsaber duel and killing him by cutting him in half, I realized Obi-Wan's training must have been complete. He just killed a Sith Lord after there had been zero conflicts with the Sith in a 1,000 years! He didn't have to take the "Trials" as he mentioned in the Jedi Council scene with Qui-Gon and Anakin. What resonates with me the most is how Obi-Wan and Anakin interacted with each other in Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones. with Anakin now a young adult, he had a little over ten years of Jedi training, and even though he was "The Chosen One, Obi-Wan still gave Anakin orders and on missions, which was fine. By Episode 3: Revenge Of The Sith, Obi-Wan was more like an older brother figure to Anakin, than a dad figure. Which makes sense, given Obi-Wan was 25, and Anakin was 10 when they met. I will always like the Prequels, despite the clunky dialogue, and the mediocre acting, the set designs, the visual effects and the scope of the stories were pretty damn good.

    0:58 - Can you link this footage from the premiere? BTW, cool video! I don't agree with 100% of what you said, there are a ton of details important to character motivations and the plot that you missed but overall I liked the video, it's good seeing different perspectives on the prequels instead the same old hateful videos by 40 year old fanboys. If you're interested I recommend you watch Rick Worley's videos on the saga, I think you'll love them, especially since you're also a fan of the prequels! There's a ton of stuff there that you'll learn and find interesting.
