Who is Vairocana
Vairocana (also knows as Vairochana or Mahavairocana) is a celestial Buddha who is often interpreted, in spiritual texts like the Flower Garland Sutra (Avatamsaka Sutra), as the Dharma Body of the historical Gautama Buddha.
He is frequently referred to as “the great illuminating one” or “the all-encompassing Buddha.”
In Chinese, Korean, and Japanese Buddhism, he is also seen as the embodiment of the Buddhist concept of Emptiness.
He is the central deity among the five primordial Buddhas or the Tathagatas. Each of the five primordial Buddhas first identifies a specific human failing and then supports us in transforming it into a positive characteristic, bringing about the spiritual evolution required for enlightenment.
More specifically, He represents the conversion of ignorance into wisdom.
The element of the Buddha is water, and He is associated with the crown (Sahasrara) chakra.
As Chinese Buddhism developed, Vairochana became especially important to the T’ien-t’ai and Huyan schools.
He is also mentioned as an epithet of the Gautama Buddha in the Sutra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva Universal Virtue, who resides in a zone called “Always Tranquil Light.”

The Mantra of Light (光明真言 kōmyō shingon), is an important mantra of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, but is not emphasized in other Vajrayana sects of Buddhism.
It is taken from the Amoghapāśakalparāja-sūtra (Chinese translation Taisho ed. no. 1092) and is chanted as follows:
Oṃ Amogha Vairocana Mahāmudrā Maṇipadma Jvāla Pravarttaya Hūṃ
ओं अमोघ वैरोचन महामुद्रा मणि पद्म ज्वाल प्रवर्त्तय हूं
The translation of this mantra is Praise be to the unfailing, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra (or seal of the Buddha), the jewel, the lotus, and the radiant light turning (or existing in our world).
It is believed in Shingon Buddhism that if one chants this mantra without ego, and with sincere devotion and clarity of mind, Vairocana Buddha will place his seal upon the chanter, thus dispelling all ignorance and delusion.
