Thanks for the video . I moved to Chatham in 1978 , long story cut short , moved back in 2014 . All of Medway ( apart from Rochester ) has changed so much , and sadly not for the better 😢

i was born in gillingham and have lived my whole life in the medway towns , and have watched it Die over the years, yes the dockyard closing was very bad for the towns ,but its truly an awful place to live now , the heart has gone out of it .....
Gillingham is an absolute dump.
I moved to Rainham in1997 to try and get distance from Chatham and Gillingham. Eventually I moved to Thailand back in 2012, and I ain't coming back to the SH UK :)
I was born and grew up in Gillingham during the 50's and 60's and worked in Chatham dockyard during the early 70's better known as the lazy 'D'. Moved away in 1978 and went back to visit in 2011 and was totally shocked at how run down and neglected it felt, so sad.
I still work there sometimes repairing gas boilers, the place is a shit hole with dirt and rubbish everywhere, they house the foreign scum in cheap rented terrace houses, glad I don’t actually live there, it’s a world away from the place I knew in the late 70s when I went out with a girl from Gillingham
The closure of the dockyard and and the subsequent knock on effect signaled the death knell for the Medway Towns. Chatham and Gillingham have never recovered.

Those numbers of ships alongside is about the size of the Royal Navy in 2019.

I was at HMS Pembroke in 1976 doing my cooks training, we lived in East camp.
I'm sure there was a pub on a roundabout in Chatham.
My Dad was also based at Chatham in the 1950's, he liked it there.

Chatham dock as she used to be, sad empty space now, I went there a few time when it was a live dock yard👍👍
I was there in 77, worked in the RSU (Reserve Ships Unit) after decommissioning HMS Dundas and then HMS Hardy. Good times indeed. Night rounds of those ships was scary for a young sailor armed with only a pussers right angle torch for protection after all the ghost stories we were told by the old salts. The scariest things we ever came across though was the dockyard mateys sleeping on the nightshift!
I know how you feel I was on Hampshire in LRP and doing fire rounds visiting every compartment at night was scary your imagination ran riot.

I still remember seeing the rope walk where heavy ropes were made...still there in 1956
its so sad to see what the navy has become, when this was filmed we would of had at least 65 to 70 destroyers, frigates and cruisers, bases all around the world, dozens upon dozens of submarines, and today there are just 19 destroyers and frigates, and of course if you have less ships, you dont need as many bases so Chatham had to go, this was followed by Rosyth 10 years later, lets hope we can return the RN to some of its former glory!
And only 6 atack submarines! But will have Seven eventually!
And they are closing what’s left at Hms Caledonia Rosyth! So no more navy personnel atall will be there in future! So SAD
But one new destroyer can apparently do the job of 3 old destroyers., Plus it was extremely hard to get the manpower to properly crew these ships
I didn't realise that Rosyth had closed. I knew Caledonia had, then became student accommodation if I remember rightly

Nice to see Chatham back in the 70's as a proper Naval Base as it was designed to be well before Nelson's day in the 18th Century.
A curse on those that decided it was no longer needed as such and withdrew RN's presence! Such a decision has arguably left the nation's defences seriously undermaned!
Just at the start of dismantling our way of life
All is not lost just yet, people are now waking up to whats being taken away from us.
It is because Christianity underpinned our culture and is now despised by most.

60,s RN Served on HMS Aurora Chatham based Chatham was a bit more laid back than Pompey or Guz It was really great in those days Lived not far away. Pubs nice and handy at Gillingham gate

That would be HMS Triumph, ex Aircraft Carrier converted into a maintenance support ship, spent her last days non operational in Chatham.
Yep, the Triumph. My mate was on it when it served as the base for Chatham FMG. He loved it👍🏻I was lucky enough to have 2 Chatham-based ships in the 70s when I was in the RN. Great baseport⚓️
That collection of ships was the 'Reserve Ship Unit'... in the event of snowfall we were to go on board the Triumph with brooms to keep her deck clear and stop her becoming unstable, because she had no engines... lucky for us, the 77/78 winter had no snow.
Is that Achilles having her bow replaced?
