I was never her biggest fan but there is no denying this performance. Clean, high, fast jumps, great flow, great showmanship and fast, sharp footwork. She OWNED this program from start to finish.
This young lady's musicality is absolutely phenomenal! I remember watching her win gold in the 1994 Olympics, and I'm so grateful her brilliant performances are preserved here for all to experience. Love from the US 💖
I love the crowd reaction at her 'Baiul' spin or the donut spin. I remember the first time I ever saw that spin was from Oksana at '93 Euros. It's a cool move to this very day.
This was the first performance I saw of Oksana and I was enthralled. Such a natural fluidity and feel for the music. You can’t teach that performance level. And at 15 years old. Say what you will of her technical ability but she jumps much higher than the current phenom Russian Eteri girls. Her balletic moves to such a great Latin music with hips that don’t lie! Mesmerized. Thank you for finding this. When I saw it first in ‘93, I was so bummed that I didn’t record it. Such a natural performer. Reminds me of Yuna Kim’s performance level and musicality.
What made Oksana great was her flow and her artistry, not her jumps and the technical merits. She never scored the highest scores technically, but artistically? Very, VERY hard to beat. She had charisma, something skaters who comment tend to marginalize. As the New York Times article put it, "Compete" has replaced "Perform" in the skating world. Many skaters just skate around the ice "hitting" jumps, but are boring to watch. Oksana had balletic ability, which I, as a dancer trained in ballet, appreciate very much.
mcbrion1951 You are so correct. Her balletic artistry was gorgeous, nobody touched her in that regard. Her incredible confidence and determination plus her beauty.
Oksana jumps were massive. She didnt put any stenght and jumped so high amd fast. The axel is like a feather. She does all the technicall content in skill, not is force. That is excelency. No other at that time was better technically than her.
Tyrone Branch completely agree! And no Maarten how many dance lessons you take, it would never have as much musicality to the music. She had the best standing poses and dance moves. I almost don’t want to actually skate. Lol.
Great speed, great stretch, great flexibility! Oksana had it all! I never realized she a triple lutz-triple toe in her arsenal. Amazing! Flow, speed, technique. Sandra Bezic called it right!
Actually, Sandra Besic mispoke. Most of the top ladies at the those Worlds performed triple lutz-double toes in the Technical Program (what we call the Short Program today). Oksana's was HUGE though. She is really one of the best lutzers out there.
I remember when I first saw her here at Worlds, telling everyone this was going to be the one who won the Olympic Gold, they thought I was crazy, that Nancy was going to win it...on a side note,I had forgotten that Oksana was in second place behind Nancy going into the Long program here...just like the Olympics..same result both times. Oksana will always be my favorite skater, only wish she had been able to equal Sonja Henie's 3 Olympic Gold Medals, just wasn't meant to be.
I have to say this program was Wow it was so good she definitely had potential triple toe triple toe combo! Her donut spin so fast love her footwork I like this even better than her swan Lake performance moves to the music

That donut spin! Not sure who invented it first but that’s all her move! And everyone tries to emulate it. Love those hips! I know Russians learn ballet at an early age but Latin groove? She has just a great feel for the music! And let’s you see the movement. These days, no one knows how to just stop! Give us a pose or a spiral or edge and STOP so we can appreciate it. Too many steps and transitions ruins the appreciation of great lines. At 15, such a natural!
@stefrevollo Overall Oksana had a higher degree of edge quality, speed, execution & even position throughout the entire program. Baiul executed her 3Lutz 2toe combo with more speed, Jose had no speed coming out of it & had to cling to her toe picks to keep the 2nd jump in control. Oksana's Spiral sequence featured more pleasant poses. Looking at both ladies, they held the positions for pretty much the same amount of time. Jose was underscored I agree but I think Oksana earned her score :)
The technical requirements were different back then. You can be sure Galina made certain Oksana fulfilled them in the technical portion, and I'm sure Sandra would have pointed out anything that was lacking. Oksana was there to win and she skated like a champion. Not to mention the judges were consistent across the board in both the Required Elements and Presentation scores. Her marks were deserved.
Oksana really came in took the skating world by storm, then left. She. Really benefited from the Winter Olympics shifting away from the Summer Olympics.
What came before Oksana was Katarina Witt, what came after was Nicole Bobeck. Then they ushered in Sasha Cohen. These skaters skated truly from a pure performative, hear-on-your-sleeve, get lost in the pulse of the music kind of approach that most of their peers couldn’t quite tap into.
Seeing Oksana again made me think of the people of her native Ukraine, who are being relentlessly bombarded by the Russian Federation in a brutal and stupid war. I pray that peace will eventually be restored, and I pray that Oksana will skate an exhibition to celebrated the restoration of peace.
Alex Fox, I think he is an Argentina native. He used to perform live in South Beach back in the 90’s, he then moved onto performing at Cafe Del Mar in Ft. Lauderdale beach as of 5-7 years ago where I saw him live once again performing with his sons. He has a small yet committed world wide audience which seeks him out, myself included. He is one of the best, one of my favorites since my teen years!
@stefrevollo actually I think the rules were different back then... the spiral sequence did not have a required amount of time on each foot, and the combination only required a change of foot... the sitspin was optional in either the combo or if entered from the air (Oksana did a death drop). As for the double flip and axel, I think Josee's 2axel technique always looked a bit iffy... too much height and often times overrotation. I also thought Oksana had better steps going into her 2flip.
@tanaramclean ... that Oksana's skate looks terrific but when you detail it, it's more lacking. But I'm not saying I would place Josée higher than her, simply because the presentation is spectacular.
you can do a triple-triple in technical program last time? i didn't know that. and wow that's be cool if Baiul has landed a triple lutz-triple toe combination.
@stefrevollo only 1 of the judges had Josee even above Surya Bonaly. Chen nearly hit the boards on her combo and had a better overall series of ordinals than Josee, but lost 4th on a 5-4 split only. Josee was not seen as a true elite to the judges, too old and not enough achievements for her age.
Yeah, you’re probably right. Especially with such a short amateur career but who cares! Her artistry and fluidity is the LAST time I ever was so excited by a program. I could watch this a 1000 times and never get bored.
@@bettybleu12 yes The snob detractors have never replaced Oksana’s magic with any of their favorite skaters. That is a fact too. More interest, more you tubes of Oksana all these years later than any other female skater!!!
@tanaramclean Indeed Chouinard's spirals were poor, but so were Oksana's. To me they are held less and there are only 3 ! I would give the edge to Oksana only on the combination, because she had better flow out of it, but Josée's axel and flip were better. Then Josée's spins were definitely better and held for long. As much as I like this program and would reward it a very high second mark, I cannot understand the judges’ first mark. Good jumps but no real spiral sequence (just three short shallow spirals with no extension and no spiraling on the ice), no sit position in the combination spin (mandatory), and very weak layback spin. And this is worth 5.8 technically? That’s a joke! Chouinard’s fulfilled the requirements much more and only got 5.5 and 5.6s… I’m clueless !

This was Oksana at her peak. Beautiful jumps, great speed, no mistakes.
You can tell she is not suffering from injuries like those of the Olympics. She was suffering so bad but pulled off to win gold! What a champion 🏆
