    Hi Matt, I bought the 35 as my first prime lens for my Nikon Z6. I very happy with this lightweight Lens. The sharpness and the over all performance was great and I can only highly recommend this lens. I have also the 14-30, 24-70 f4, the 50 and the 85mm lens, but the 35 is mostly my first choice. Thank you very much for you nice videos here on UA-cam. I am a great fan of you and your work! Hope to meet you one day. Greetings from Germany to Australia 👍😊

    The 35mm is looking great. I love your relaxed style of videos and useful information at the same time. I'm really liking the quality of the images coming out of that Z7. Nikon sure got that one right for a first attempt at a high-end FF mirrorless offering.

      Yeah I totally agree cooloox. To have this level of quality and to be able to get an end product which I think is nearing an entry level medium format (read Hasselblad X1D) at less than half the cost. This is a great achievement. And any Z prime you buy today, will be just as good in 25 years time. They are an affordable and solid investment. Cheers Matt

    This was my first Z lens -- grabbed it shortly after buying the Z6 when I realized the 6 wasn't going to work as my primary wildlife/action portrait camera. Other than on my original SLR in the '70s it is my first fixed 35 mm, as well. I adore the focal length tho for walk about/'journalistic' shooting and used to fix my 24-70 at 35 :) I was lured away a bit by my 50 mm and while I suspect it's the romance of the great 35mm shooters and what they produced I truly am always drawn back to 35 as a normal lens -- whether science backs me up on 35 being THE normal or not :) COVID has screwed my regular, 'casual' carry my camera into the city and shoot away routine but what little of that I did get to do before the virus chased me indoors made me adore the lens and just love the feel of it with the Z6 in my hand. I love the lens so much I'm sure that means Nikon will have a 35 1.4 or 1.2 soon :) I've just come over from your 50 1.2 video which prompted lust for that glass, so I went looking for your comments on the 35 1.8 to let bring me in from a consumerist urge and remain satisfied (as I am!) with the 35. Oh, and that shot (the 3rd of the three you selected -- the vertical outside walls of the buildings with the dark sky) is spectacular. I gasped (truly) at how evocative that capture is. Really one of those, "Damn, wish I took that shot' photos :) So very beautiful and so very dystopian (architecturally, at least) simultaneously. Stellar. As usual, thanks for your thoughts and sharing of your work in these videos.

    I have three S lenses, the Z 24-70mm f/4.0 S, the Z 50mm f/1.8 S, and the Z 35mm f/1.8 S. All three are incredible. They create almost 3-D images and I am using them on a Z6. I would suppose they would produce even more detail on a Z7 (but I favor better low light performance over ultra high resolution). For that matter, F mount lenses look better on the Z6, too. I use the 24-70 by default, and then the 35 or 50 in either low light situations, or if I want to simplify my outing by using only one of these incredible prime lenses. I also use the F mount 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 as a "one lens solution" if I am doing something like going to a Disney theme park. You can't lose with the Z cameras, or any lens (including DX lenses) I have tried on my Z6.

      Lawrose, you sound a lot like me. We have the same Z lens selection. And I like to experiment with different lens combos depending on what I am shooting, and I am very much enjoying putting my old F glass on the Z. Have you seen this film of mine? ua-cam.com/video/1QBjgXryObw/v-deo.html All about the 14-24 mm F2.8 on the Z7 . Yes i have almost purchased a Z6 a few times for the low light performance and slightly faster focus, I will try and hold of until the next Z's are announced. Thanks so much for joining the conversation, what is the next Z lens you will get ? Cheers Matt

    • @lawrose4

      @@MattIrwinPhotography , I'm in remission from GAS at the moment. My last purchase was the Z 50 f/1.8 S, and only because it is such a highly rated "best" Nikon lens. I held off on that lens until recently because I also have the 50mm f/1.8 G, and although not as sharp as the S version, it's a great lens, too. Truthfully, I also have a good selection of DX lenses, and they rock on the Z6. The only gear that might tempt me now would be a Z mount all-in-one 28-300mm, or similar. However, the buzz is that Nikon will never produce such a consumer lens as it would reflect badly on what they want the Z cameras to be. No problem. Thanks to the FTZ adaptor we can use any Nikon lens. Best of both worlds.

    I bought the 40mm f/2 with my Z6 last year, but I just decided to replace it with this instead. The 40 just isn't doing it for me in sharpness in close-in indoor situations, which is my primary use case for it. Too many shots just come out noticeably soft even without pixel peeping. The 35 is a lot more expensive, but I think it will be worth it. (Plus I prefer the focal length.)

    Good to see you using C1. I find the import pane a bit confusing - I don't know if it's me. Is the 35mm a bit overkill for a Z6 - I was looking at one for gimbal work.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  4 роки тому

      Hey Mark, yeah I love Capture One, now that I can't use Aperture anymore. Closest thing I have found to replace it. There are many aspects of the C1 that I find a little confusing, or just harder to use than they should be. Otherwise it is solid. The GUI team needs to be expanded a little I think. :) When you say overkill on a gimbal, what do you mean? Too good? Too wide? Not wide enough? Cheers Matt

    Hi Matt-greetings from Rockford Illinois! I had a quick question for you. I am a huge fan of night photography. Currently I have the signal 35 mm 1.4 art lens on my Z6 with the ftz II but it is a pretty heavy lens and I am thinking if this Z 35mm. Just wanted to find out how you found this lens to shoot at night. I just watched your video and it looks like it does really well at night. The sigma that I have a 1.4, but it didn’t seem like that big difference between 1.41.8 especially with these new Z lenses. Anyway, thanks for taking a look at this message and curious what your thoughts might be. Keep up the fantastic videos and thanks again. Scott

  • @TheGeoDaddy

    IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for:
    Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850)
    AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!)
    Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650)
    Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.

  • @dunnymonster
    @dunnymonster 4 роки тому +1

    Looks excellent, I would question how much correction is done to the RAW file in camera? It seems pretty much every mirrorless camera applies lens corrections to RAW captures so it's often hard to establish how good the real optical qualities of the lens are.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah Monster, funnily enough Geoff, who let me borrow his copy of this lens (before mine arrives) to make this piece and I discussed exactly your point around in camera correction. And that some software allows you to turn it off, and some software does not. As the correction is baked into the files metadata. Our conclusion was we needed to explore it more. I tend to agree with you that this is happening, and I think where I noticed it most was with my 14-24 2.8 F, I feel like that is being corrected. Which is why I was blown away by how good it looks on the Z7. So I take your point, how good is the lens without digital enhancement vs optically. And yes we don't know yet. For me at the end of the day, if the combination of physics and computer science are creating a better outcome, and in real-world application the lens is looking great. I'm happy. These are very affordable, lite, compact and well performing primes, that are helping me create even better pics than in my F world. It's fun and very rewarding. Cheers Sir, Matt

    Certainly seems to perform extremely well Matt, the colour rendition looks beautiful. I'm interested to know if that's something affected by lighting as you shoot a lot of street scenes at night? As a current Canon user (and people rave about the Canon 'look'), I'll try some night shots myself but I suspect the 5Dii sensor will be poor so the little M5 may get a comparison test as well.

      My Z7 I pick and use more than any other camera I own. It is smaller and lighter, great for travel. And the Z6 and 7 are exactly the same body so there is no hit for better files. Plus you can now get a growing range of great glass, which are small and lite and well priced, and very very good. And as you capture landscape images, the slight difference in moving object low light performance will not be an issue, so I would 100% say yes to the Z7. You will love it. I'm thinking of going to Sony but I don't know if I will like using it because of the ergonomics. Hybrid shooting is my play and if possible stick to one system. I just need more guidance before I fully commit. I'd really appreciate your unbiased take on this since you have experience in other systems. Thanks and keep up the great content.

      Cheers Erick, thanks for your thoughts. Yes I own the original Sony A7R which I purchased in 2013 and also the A7R III which I picked up last year in July. So I have watched Sony grow into the cameras they have today. For you as a Nikon person I would say by default go Nikon. But firstly I would ask you what is your use-case? What do you shoot? Let me know. What I can say now though is, unless it is sport at night, or high speed wildlife, I would choose the Nikon all the way. For Ergonomics, EVF, GUI, controls, great video implementation, CFEXPRESS and a more photographic approach to making a camera, I think the lenses are very good value as you can see in the film and my the 50mm film. And then the major reason to stick with Nikon is the Z mount itself. I think there are many great things to come from this mount ... and we are only just seeing the very first chapter in this story. And by sheer physics no other mount can be better. If you can wait until next year when we see some more bodies I would jump in then. Otherwise the current cameras I am very happy with and I use the Z more than any other camera I have. Let me know what you want to shoot. Cheers Matt
