No one paid to see him put people in headlocks or head scissors, they wanted to see him kick the bad guys's asses and he did that really well. I loved the Backlund era, and I loved the Hogan/Piper "Rock and Wrestling " stuff which followed. Everything was changing at the time of this interview. Mean gene just came on board as an announcer, Hogan and Piper were on their way (if not on board already), and the "All American Boy" was being phased out. Even Captain Lou Albano would become good guy in time and Muraco even later doing a short 'good guy' stint as "The Rock, Don Muraco" . I do think Don was taking a dig at Backlund for real, advising him to shift with the times. Bob wasn't too long with the WWF after this. A victim of changing tastes. Thanks for sharing this.

    Great clip. We were about to say "good-bye" (temporarily) to Backlund, without question, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time because Vince was just starting his era of "Sports Entertainment". Regardless of what people say about Bob Backlund being a bore as champion, and didn't have mic skills, he was still the best techical, scientific wrestler to ever hold the WWWF/WWF title, he was a real credit to the title and to the promotion. He could wrestle circles around Hulk Hogan.Backlund was a legit wrestler, Hogan wasn't, he was just a big blonde loud mouth entertainer who was masquerading as a wrestler, he had limited wrestling skills. I lost some interest in the WWF not long after Hogan won the title. Boring as champion, poor mic skills? maybe, but Backlund was legit and Hogan was a fraud. How many times have I watched Backlund's matches on youtube? many times, and how about Hogan? I dont. I prefer to be entertained by Backlund' s scientific skills than to see Hogan do punches and kicks and leg drops. Vince Jr. and Hogan ruined pro wrestling.

      Yes, Bob was the real deal. And "face" champions played it straight in the 70's and before. Ever hear Dory Funk jr or Jack Brisco on the mic? straight snoozes. The heels were the colorful guys then. Bob was believable and that's what the WWF wanted then. And lastly, Backlund was a legit wrestler. In a shoot, all the guys back then would be tapping out in seconds if you really tried to fuck with backlund and not play ball. The old promoters were concerned about that stuff then - like when a champion wrestled in a foreign country. WWF was comfortable with Backlund knowing that.

    The best all around wrestler in the 80s was Don Muraco. Definitely the best on the stick.

    Great promo cuts! Muraco shine like a diamond in that era! The end of reality and the beginning of the cartoons! Pretty sad demise Boo hoo hoo hoo! 🤒💔🤧

      Agreed. When they put then scuffed Billy Graham with Muraco in the late 80's. You could see Muraco was on his way out. And sadly a lot of the cartoon generation did not get to really feel Muraco in his prime.

    In a shoot, when at his best, Backlund would beat almost everyone. He's still in unbelievable shape to this day.

    He may have looked Opie, but he was one tough son of a gun. I think it was Jake the Snake that said he was a freak of nature.

    I grew up with Hulkamania in the 1980's.... Which child didn't?.... But the more i watch of the old school as i am in my 40's now the more i start liking the old school of professional wrestling. No Snake mans, no Honky Tonk Mans, no saying your prayes and taking your vitamins... Just down to earth strong tough hard men! The real deal! These guys were at least real athletes before pro-wrestling. What do you have to day?.... Skinny small cry babies with tattoos and pink hair that means nothing.
    If i want to watch fakkots flying around i turn on the Disney channel. There is a lot of fairies there.

    Backlund was a bore as champ but is prolly one of most fit and strongest wrestlers of all time. Over 500 lbs on the bench press plus his cardio off the charts jus sayin the guy was a pure athelete for sure

    • @jpwjr1199
      @jpwjr1199 3 роки тому

      Absolutely. There's a video of him somewhere on YT at 70 years old doing 10 consecutive "seated" (legs lifted to a suspended seated pose) pullups. I'm in my 40's and can barely do a legit 3 lol. My jaw hit the ground. Fuck, when I'm 70 if I make it, I'd be proud to lift my damn chin over the bar!

    Vince should've kept this story going long enough so that, one year after losing the belt to Sheik, a heel Backlund would have challenged Hogan for the strap in the first main event of Wrestlemania.

    • @jpwjr1199
      @jpwjr1199 3 роки тому

      Backlund didn't want to turn heel because his daughter was in grammar school and had already started to run into some socially uncomfortable situations with other kids when her father was champion, and he didn't want to compound it by becoming a villain.
