If there was an "MVP" for wrestling territories, Muraco would've been the undisputed MVP of the WWF in 1983. He was never better. Allowed the WWF to have main event caliber cards without Backlund. He truly earned that title Magnificent.

No one paid to see him put people in headlocks or head scissors, they wanted to see him kick the bad guys's asses and he did that really well. If Hogan would have been a Lou Thesz type of wrestler then WWF would have stayed regional instead of going global, that's the truth.
I loved the Backlund era, and I loved the Hogan/Piper "Rock and Wrestling " stuff which followed. Everything was changing at the time of this interview. Mean gene just came on board as an announcer, Hogan and Piper were on their way (if not on board already), and the "All American Boy" was being phased out. Even Captain Lou Albano would become good guy in time and Muraco even later doing a short 'good guy' stint as "The Rock, Don Muraco" . I do think Don was taking a dig at Backlund for real, advising him to shift with the times. Bob wasn't too long with the WWF after this. A victim of changing tastes. Thanks for sharing this.
Don The Magnificent Muraco reminds me of why he was one of my favorite heels back in the day! The man portrayed a class-1 a-hole to the hilt! Someday I'll find the clip of him on ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT where he poked fun at "potato-chip eatin'" fans! Great clip. We were about to say "good-bye" (temporarily) to Backlund, without question, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time because Vince was just starting his era of "Sports Entertainment". Personally, I think the long-term results have been mixed but I am glad the WWE has made an effort at preserving the library of Pro-Wrestling's long history!

Yes, Bob was the real deal. And "face" champions played it straight in the 70's and before. Ever hear Dory Funk jr or Jack Brisco on the mic? straight snoozes. The heels were the colorful guys then. Bob was believable and that's what the WWF wanted then. And lastly, Backlund was a legit wrestler. In a shoot, all the guys back then would be tapping out in seconds if you really tried to fuck with backlund and not play ball. The old promoters were concerned about that stuff then - like when a champion wrestled in a foreign country. WWF was comfortable with Backlund knowing that.
Ironically enough Muraco's second reign as Intercontinental champ came to an end not too long after Backlund's, with Backlund dropping the belt to the Iron Sheik on December 26, 1983 and Muraco dropping his title to Tito Santana on February 11, 1984. Two different passing of the torches, so to speak.

Backlund is definitely a tough interview. Okerland did a good job getting Muraco and Albano to open up though. Muraco would have been a credible WWWF or NWA Champion. Backlund had just completed a bloody series of matches with Butcher Vachon about this time.

Vince should've kept this story going long enough so that, one year after losing the belt to Sheik, a heel Backlund would have challenged Hogan for the strap in the first main event of Wrestlemania.

Backlund to my knowledge disappeared after dropping the title. He was a true old school wrestler

Absolutely. There's a video of him somewhere on YT at 70 years old doing 10 consecutive "seated" (legs lifted to a suspended seated pose) pullups. I'm in my 40's and can barely do a legit 3 lol. My jaw hit the ground. Fuck, when I'm 70 if I make it, I'd be proud to lift my damn chin over the bar!
Vince should've kept this story going long enough so that, one year after losing the belt to Sheik, a heel Backlund would have challenged Hogan for the strap in the first main event of Wrestlemania.
Backlund didn't want to turn heel because his daughter was in grammar school and had already started to run into some socially uncomfortable situations with other kids when her father was champion, and he didn't want to compound it by becoming a villain.
