Muralidhara Gopala - a 'listeners' choice' of my Guru MLV amma

Muralidhara Gopala by Periasamy Thooran in ragam Maand and talam Adi was at all times the 'listeners' choice' request during each of my Guru's concerts.
Each time I sing this kriti so many memories keep flooding in.
This is an excerpt from the concert for Federation of City Sabhas - virtual - in 2020 during Marghazhi.
The channel of one of the brightest stars of Carnatic music in India, her distinctly stunning vocal style has ignited musical imagination and spirit across languages, frontiers and ideologies. Among the first in her generation to receive many prestigious awards including the Padma Bhushan and the Sangita Kalanidhi, her mastery over vocal techniques and complicated styles makes her one of the most sought after artists. Her authentic renditions of ‘kritis’ and refined elaborations of ‘raagas’, the élan with which she breezes through the ‘kalpana swaras’, her command over the octaves and her supremely confident stage presence combined with unstated humility has given her an enviable pre-eminence in the world of carnatic music. Sudha has performed a range of concerts and festivals worldwide, and has released over 200 albums with leading recording companies. Sudha Ragunathan is the only Carnatic musician, second to Barat Ratna Dr. MS Subbulakshmi, to have sung at the United Nations.

Maand, a Rajastani (Marwari) folk raag, mastered by MLV amma (courtesy, Bade Gulam Ali Khan Saheb) and this one is quite special. Thanks for this. Rekindled nostalgic moments. My father was an ardent fan of MLV amma and hence i too got dragged into that magic.

Stylish Maand. Sudhaji's own take on Guru's number. The voice(star) known of impeccable clarity of fast sangathis has been sparkling in Carnatic sky since around 1990 and getting brighter only !!!

Excellent rendition of the composition in Ragam Maand by Sri. Periyasami Thooran.
Maand is a feisty raga, popular in North India and well-known for lighter pieces in the South. It is supposed to have evolved from Rajasthani folk music!!! AS it delightful to both listener and performer alike. and purportedly brings forth the mood of romance, combined with cheer and warmth. Maand is often spiced up with foreign notes to make it “misra” Maand, as it was once explained in a news report stating that it is like “chai” ( Tea) becomes “masala chai.” The notes that feature in the conventional Maand raga include Sadja, Suddha Rishabha, Antara Gandhara, Suddha Madhyama, Pancama, Chatusruti Dhaivata, and Kakali Nishada, and not in that order. In fact, it is the zigzag patterns in this raga that give rise to a feeling that only can be compared with enjoying a swing on a trapeze. The popular classical pieces in this raga include “Janaki Manoharam” by Mysore Vasudevachar, “Ramanai Bhajithal” of Papanasam Sivan and “Vaanathin Meethu”(arutpa of Ramalinga Swami).
