If you can afford it, go for the paperwhite. Not because it's shinier or more expensive, but simply because it's waterproof. A kindle can last you for decades if you treat it well

Even my real books aren't waterproof. This is not a feature that is super important while buying a ebook reader of you don't read near a pool. And if you can afford a pool you can pretty much afford any ebook reader, no reason to buy the cheapest one.

I have had the most recent model Paperwhite since Dec. of 2023. After 4 months of reading several books, I ordered my husband a Kindle Basic and I fell in love with it! So, I traded my Paperwhite for the Kindle Basic 22’. So much easier to hold and to take with me in a purse.

Get a cover for the basic one or buy an actual tablet. Spending $160 on a simple tool that could be made in 1999 inst worth the price. It's like buying a better cvt for a Honda or buying a $100 hammer for construction. Tip someone if you just want to spend money.

My 2018 Paperwhite ended up in the washing machine (long story). I fished it out a few minutes into the wash cycle and it came out okay. When I upgraded this week, I stuck with the Paperwhite for the water resistance, but I would have preferred the smaller screen on the basic.

After many thoughts and considerations, I eventually bought the Paperwhite 11th gen. Turns out I really need that 7" screen real estate. And the battery life is amazing! WAY night and day improved compared to Oasis. I immediately succumbed to my readings after unboxing and setting up. Almost non-stop usage for 24 hours, and the battery only downed to 89% from 100%. The reading experience gets even better with a flip cover. It makes all the differences when reading with one hand.
To say I am happy with my purchase is an understatement!

i have the standard kindle (11th gen) and i love it sooo much. if i could’ve afforded the paperwhite then i would’ve gotten it, but the standard kindle is absolutely perfect for everything in my experience, has zero shortcomings compared to the paperwhite aside from the fact that the paperwhite is waterproof. however, i don’t think it necessarily matters very much to have a waterproof kindle unless you’re frequently reading by pools or in boats.

The perfect device would be the PW with a sunken screen. I'm torn between the two, but for a device which is basically just a screen, I think I'll buy the crisper Basic scren.

    • @dadorapaic
      @dadorapaic Рік тому +13

Couldn’t agree more. Sunken screen is just way superior for reading - look and feel is much more paper like. Additional layer over the paperwhite for waterproofing just removes the magic and it becomes more tablet like. As you said, hybrid between those two devices would be the best option. Or offer a third option, something like non-waterproof paperwhite.

Ppw5 was my first Kindle ever, and I was really excited to read on a paperlike screen, which resulted in disappoinment when I found out the screen doesn't look as sharp and crispy because of the extra layer. The same 300ppi on Kobo with flush screen looks far more superior.

When I bought the 2018 Paperwhite, the first thing that bugged me was the fact that the screen was flush. It really annoyed me when I was holding it and I didn't know where the edge of the frame around the text was if I wasn't looking straight at my fingers. My thumb would press down too close and it would accidentally change pages, sometimes several at a time, then I would have to page back until I found where I was. I don't care about it being waterproof. Honestly, I was more worried about the case getting wet. I was actually able to use the one I'd had on my prior Kindle, my beloved hot pink leather case. So tomorrow I receive my new 2022 Kindle. I hope I like it as much as I think I will.

Amazon should come up with both the basic and paperwhite in both sizes 6 and 7 inches. Yhe size really doesn't help much when it comes to reading scanned copy of books or technical book with lots of diagrams. For that a 10 inch device would be required

  • @CasanOffi

Thank you very much for this detailed comparison :-)
I highly tend to buy the basic edition from 2022, because of the smaller design (I also like the bezel/frame more than the flat surface of the paperwhite ^^)
The only real gamechanger for me it the warmth light of the paperwhite...
I often read in the dark and a backlit screen MUST be on the warmer side, I really cannot stand blueish light for long...

Personally, I'm gonna go for the paperwhite. As much as I dread too large to hold comfortably devices, what's even worse to me are blue white screens. My phone is almost sepia in comparison to what I see on other ppl's screens on the train x.x Eye comfort is a must when looking at a screen for prolonged time. Especially when you mainly have time to read during your commute to and from work and you eyes are already tired, either bc it's the early morning or because you stared at a screen all day at work. And as a backpack girl, I don't need it to fit in a purse (or pocket...)
Plus, the paperwhite being waterproof is perfect for a nice bath or vacation~
And dust collecting in those edges of the other model would annoy me.. it already does with my phone cover.

Worth mentioning that Amazon just started selling Certified Refurbished Paperwhite for 89$ (compared to Basic 2022 Kindle 99$ price tag). It's actually cheaper to get Paperwhite now if you dont mind refurbished devices.
As for 2022 model - I'd pick it if it had warm light option. I'd pick warm light over increased internal storage any day, but unfortunately 2022 model lacks it, and I absolutely hated standard cold backlight of 2019 model.

*BUYER BEWARE!* Amazon are selling the Kindle 2022 purportedly “without ads”, yet these devices clearly contain advertising in the form of lists on the home screen headed (and I quote), “Discover Books”, “Try Unlimited Reading & Listening”, “New releases in Kindle Store”, “Books that look great on Kindle” and “Most wished for Kindle books”.
This is a clear cut case of false advertising, attempting to sell devices labelled, “without advertising” that clearly, and by the definition of the Law, contain large quantities of advertising.

kindle is a e-Reader for minority culture. For international flavoured device, it has to be kobo.

I love my kindles, but these things are highway robbery. They are still slow amd choppy with the processing power of a potato 🥔 and made out of super cheap materials. They are charging us $100-$350 for $10 worth of hardware and processing speeds that rival the atari 2600.

    Great review!!
I would have purchased the new basic Kindle 2022 in a heartbeat if it was readily available in Australia🥹 It’s such a great size, has great features and is such a great price.
Luckily I was able to take advantage of an Amazon sale and purchased the Kindle Paperwhite 2021.
I don’t regret it at all! Much smaller than I thought, very easy for my XS hands to grip, love the flush screen and always leave it on the warmest light setting. Most importantly, the waterproofing has been a feature that keeps me at ease when reading near water.
I agree that you’d be happy with either! Get a Paperwhite 2021 (on sale) if you need waterproofing or get the basic Kindle 2022 as a more portable option… or get both!😅

Yeah..i too was in the same situation as kindle 2022 was not yet available in India , so went for the paperwhite on sale😀..The warmlight feature in paperwhite is so soothing to eyes in dark and the bigger screen also is a plus..Happy with the decision 😎
