    9:25 i have a sony a6500 and when i first got it, i went filming without the face detection autofocus and was pretty disappointed with the focus hunting. It was SUPER BAD and i was confused, because when doing my research i saw people saying it was amazing. Then after tweaking the settings and using the face detection + zone/wide i noticed its a game changer, even when there's no face to detect (idk why), the autofocus gets REALLY great, extremely reliable and fast. Rarely have focus hunting now. Probably you had something similar since you said you didn't use the face detection autofocus to use it like you do with Canon, but i thought it would be good to share this, since it's a thing that happens and nobody told me about when i got the a6500.

      I have the a6500 as well and completely agree with you. Setting the focusing area to wide and turning on Face detection makes it perform a lot better. At some point i'm planning on selling my a6500 and upgrading to the A7III.

    I understand that you were using the center point focus point like you do With Canon, but not using all the Sony features to get best performance doesn’t seem like a fair comparison for the Sony. Would have loved to see how much better if wouldn’t perform when using face detection autofocus as well after you had a couple problems with hunting focus when in Hawaii

    This is why you're one of my favourite UA-cam filmmakers Matti, these are the types of reviews that actually help people out! Not bashing one brand or the other, but taking each one for what they're worth and being honest about them!
    Also, there might be some workaround for the issues you had with SLOG and 120p performance. There's people out there creating custom camera profiles based on the Cine gammas that offer you virtually the same dynamic range as SLOG2, better colours, but without the insane noise gain that SLOG2 is notorious for!

      Matti Haapoja the idea that you wanted to use the Sony the way you use your Canon is probably the least logical attempt at a comparison I've heard. Why limit yourself by not using new and better technologies that Sony provides to get a better result? Otherwise why progress technology at all? You may have been the only one to say it's bad but I imagine you are the only one who decided to bypass using what the camera actually offers. End rant 🤣

    Nice review Matti! When I talked to the folks at Sony I was pretty excited about this camera, such a good price point for what you can get out of it. You didn't use FACE DETECT?!?!? WTF!!! ;)
    How can you then say that the Canon still has better AF when you didn't even use the built-in Sony AF feature we called FACE DETECT... using your 'logic' you should have turned off the Canon Dual-Pixel AF because the Sony didn't have it either.

    • @VictorValencia
      @VictorValencia 6 років тому +1

      Streets of Vancouver why are you mad? 😂😂
      He was using it how he regularly uses it.
      He doesn't use face detection on canon, so he compared this to the way he regularly films.
      Btw cannons AF is better. Face detection or not.

    • @StreetsOfVancouverChannel
      @StreetsOfVancouverChannel 6 років тому +4

      So he didn't use Face Detect in the review... but then you assert how much better the "Canon" AF is than the Sony (though the Face Detect feature also meters the light of the skin tone off of the face that is detected which is a superb feature).

    • @leecason9468
      @leecason9468 6 років тому

      Victor Valencia better marginally and better in only some situations. Max Yurvey showed that the a7iii and Canon dual pixel autofocus trade blows with either camera out performing the other depending on the situation .

    I just bought an a7iii and I'm having trouble deciding between the soon to be released Sigma 20mm 1.4 or the 24mm 1.4... I really want wide angle but the 20mm has no thread for filters and has a fixed lens hoods, and also weighs 2.09lb.
    But the 24mm can use filters and weighs 1.46lb.
    My question is, is the 4mm focal difference worth getting the 20mm for having a wide lens? I'm looking to use it for vlog purpose/gimbal work and don't want anything too close.

    Great review Matti! As far as the autofocus, I never tried the a7 iii, but the a7r iii doesn't do the hunting at all. Didn't see it in over 100 videos shot with it so far. I'm able to use the ronin, pass in front of an object and it keeps the focus on what I want or even better if you use the touch focus it works really well to respect the focus point. Another side note, no issue editing 4k in Final Cut on any computer I have, and export is as quick as in 1080p almost. I would say 0.45sec/min of footage in export time. If that helps people who have a crazy workflow. I also really like the colour that comes out right out of the camera, especially with the creative style "Light". Another quick note, if the face autofocus is on, it's pretty damn good and never failed me so far. I decided to get the a7r iii because it's overall a more complete camera, but for sure if budget is tight I do think the a7 iii would be a really good choice. I would never go back to Canon ever, even after using the 1DX ii because the footage is not as sharp I feel, the files are gigantic, the images are pretty much like the 5d iv and the only thing appealing is the fast burst for me as I do a lot of sports shot. 10fps is way enough for what I do and I think for what 98% of people shoot. That's my food for thought! Have a great day brother and keep up the good work

    Quick question: It's been known that previous Sony Cameras had problems with Noise in the Shadows when filming in S-log. I wanted to ask if the Shadows on the a7III are better because it's in general better in low light?

    Nice review, Matti! I am coming from Nikon and seriously considering this camera.
    A quick question about your video footage. What do you do with your content once a video is edited and exported? Do you store the non-used footage on hardrives, or do you just delete it? Maybe this would be a great video to shoot - how you do your backups, and manage content, etc? I am thinking of doing a lot more video and have been wondering how to archive and store video content that didn't make the cut. Great channel, btw!

    • @dvanton
      @dvanton 6 років тому

      Thanks, Michael. In the past, I stored everything, but with 4K, etc, I am wondering if it's all worth it. Just seeing what others are doing.

    • @satar9
      @satar9 6 років тому

      Yeah, it is a bit more storage. You could buy cheap slower tb drives external or internal to store if need be

    • @satar9
      @satar9 6 років тому

      Dave, it really is a preference my man. Not everyone has the luxury of having the storage space they would like. It would be awesome to have the storage space for sure especially if you want to use that footage later. But not everyone has that luxury and it really comes down to your available funds etc.

    Great review Matti. I've been keenly interested in seeing trusted creatives with real world, unbiased reviews. Seems like an interesting camera. I don't usually like smaller cameras, simply the ergonomics don't work well, but that could be because I'm used to something bigger. I guess, with all my Canon glass, I'm hoping Canon step it up, and quickly. I don't want to switch because of the cost involved. I'll wait and see for now, working older kit which is just about still suitable for me.
    If the focus with face detection works as well as Canon, then that's a huge deal. Colour grading could be harder for less experienced, but if it's pretty close, it's not too hard to learn.
    Really interesting stuff Matti. Looking forward to the next video.
    Cheers
    JT

    Matti New to the channel and really very much enjoyed. First Awesome review and I Love how you broke down the Pro's and Con's on the Sony and you are absolutely right about sensitivity but I like to hear everyone's opinion about how they feel about all. Thanks so much as I said I really find it refreshing to hear everyone's opinion so you can hear what was liked what they can do better and what you liked about it. And what needs to be worked on. Thanks so much for sharing. Deb 👍

    You can install the Technicolor Cinestyle on the Canon to get some dynamic range back in the Canons. Just make sure you further modify that picture style to bring sharpness/saturation/contrast to 0, and add an additional +2 to color tone (so the skin tones come out more yellowish rather than too red). I have this installed like that on my Canon 5D MkII and my brand new M50, and particularly on the M50, I get at least 1 to 2 stops more of dynamic range back.

    11:13 Are you using some type of denoiser plug-in? That Canon footage looks awfully good for 12k ISO lol my 80D can hardly go above 800 in low light.

      @mattih 6 років тому +2

      Canons not bad with lowlight 😊 no denoiser on either

    • @erwin3760
      @erwin3760 6 років тому +5

      80D is not a full-frame camera, so it can't be as good in low-light. And it is slightly older too.

      I do pretty good in low light with both my 80d and sl2. I will say that I use a fast lens. Lens choice is key.

    • @TheDetherageDialect
      @TheDetherageDialect 6 років тому

      I have a fairly fast lens @ f1.8 and I still couldn't imagine pushing it that far in video mode. At least not in the standard picture profiles. Even raw stills start falling apart for me over 6400 iso when you start pulling the sliders around. Obviously the full frame sensor will have some lighting advantage, but I didn't expect it to be that significant. Maybe I just need to stop being such a stickler for grain

    This looks solid. Messed around with an A7ii a couple of months back with an 85mm G Master and loved it, with better colour science and bigger battery I'm basically sold. Will wait to see how the A7Siii turns out though haha

    I know it's not the same thing, but I do notice a difference in my Sony a6300 and my Canon 80D. The Sony has what I refer to as a buttery-ness. Is it the dynamic range difference here as well?

      He mentioned that he decided not to use face detection. Personally I don't understand the logic for not using the tech if it's there, especially considering that face detection and eye autofocus on this thing are killer based on what literally everyone else has shown.

  • @thatchinaboi

    I tried out the A7iii with the FE 24-105 F4 in B&H. I was super impressed with the minimal rolling shutter in full frame mode..even after zooming in. I was not so impressed with the 24-105 in terms of the focus breathing. It's pretty horrible. On the upside, the focus by wire is much better than the Panasonics, as it is less sensitive to the speed of the focus wheel turns. I plan on getting the A7iii, but I am undecided on the main walk around lens for video and photos. Any recommendations will be appreciated!

  • @EthanfromEngland-
    @EthanfromEngland- 2 роки тому +1

    Forgive me, but the S&Q mode is baked into the video in real time, correct? This seems unnecessary and risky when it comes to getting those shots. Wouldn't it be better to just shoot in a higher frame rate and do it in post for the flexibility?

    Does this Sony mirrorless cameras have or can have issues with back/front focus or this is an issue only for DSLR cameras ? I mean for sony bodies there is still a calibration needed depending on the lenses or the AF system through the electonic viewfinder is totally different and needs no adjustments at all ?
