I agree about the mulch. I grew up old school Italian with a couple family heirloom trees that we had here for over 90 years. the original tree that was planted was over 70 years old. (When I was a kid) That beast produced 2/3k figs a season. No joke/No mulch . Great video! Blessings Lou 🙏
Found your channel over the weekend when I picked up a Monrovia Peter's honey at my local farm. Out here in Pittsburgh I keep them all in pots. Peter's honey, chicago hardy and VDB.
Interesting! I purchased my first and only Peter's Honey 28 years ago from Monrovia myself. I have always said that I somehow acquired a magnificent specimen (perhaps a sport) since it quickly became one of the most outstanding in ground cultivars in my collection. Good luck! Lou Monti
Thanks for the video Lou; I pinched the main trunk of my one year old Improved Celeste today at 20 inches, not because I expect it to produce fruit but to induce branching. Its in a planter and I want to limit the height to about 5 feet since I hope to cover it with a hoop house next spring. I hope I did the right thing :D John in Victoria
I forgot to mention in my text that Improved Celeste is not true Celeste, and therefore it isn't as Winter hardy as the parent tree which was used in the LSU crosses. Lou Monti
Great video again Lou, I’m a newbie to in ground figs but I planted a improved celeste up here in CT zone 6b. I’ll see if I can keep it alive through the winter…
Please afford it some form of Winter protection if you expect your fig tree to survive in your zone. There are several successful methods on UA-cam that you can use. I also have several videos on this subject. Good luck, Steve! Lou Monti
Thanks for the great video. Last year I planted some fig trees in ground (Michigan Zone 6a). This year my brown turkey is coming back vigorously. Should I give it another year to get more established before I pinch? You didn’t say this in the video but I feel like it’s an indirect message here haha.
Since it's a vigorous plant, I would only pinch for more branches to form this year. However, I would pluck off any figs that might develop as the tree is only in it's second year. These are always choices best made by a grower, since you are on the site and have all of the pertinent information at your disposal to make a considered choice. Regards from, Lou Monti
To control their growth, Bryan, and to form additional branches for next years harvest. By nipping the buds on so vigorous a fruiting branch, the energy that would have been wasted in excessive growth will now be available and channeled to each fig that forms in the now limited nodes!!! That is very important to remember. Thanks for watching, regards from, Lou Monti
Hey Lou, love your channel, I’ve seen and loved your desert king, do you wrap that up in the winter? Do you pinch your DK? If so what month is best? Ty
No, I do not wrap it and, no, I do not pinch it. However, since DK is a San Pedro type fig, I sometimes pluck off the main crop figs as they are forming. It's not necessary to do so, but it does the tree no harm and it channels the energy that would have been wasted into additional branch growth and there next years Breba! Regards, Lou Monti
Well, thanks, Matteo! I'm happy to try and answer as many questions as I can on my channel, and this gives others a chance to follow along and learn, as well. I can't always get to all of the questions, but I try my best to answer most of the ones that I haven't already explained before or that can be found in my videos. Thanks for your kind thoughts! Lou Monti
Love these tips. I have 2 Black Mission Fig trees and 1 Brown Turkey. I’m in Zone 8b and one of my Black Mission is only grow leaves at the end of the stems. Do you have any idea what I need to do to get more leaves on the stems?
I thought I was healed until I recently found you on UA-cam. You’ve made me want to get more fig trees. 😆

Why do you pinch the branches that have figs already? I was always told not to do that,

Same as “tipping” a mango tree

Hi, Marsha! Have you checked your roots for Root Knot Nematodes? I'm very curious. Lou Monti
You can view my video titled....(Fig Monsters), to learn about and how to recognize Nematodes. Regards!
