- On this episode we cover the history of Battle Beasts.
They were short-lived in the United States and had their connection to the Transformers severed but their unique rub symbol play gimmick has still kept a fervent community of collectors after all these years.

After watching many episodes of Toy Galaxy over this calendar year, I can finally say "I HAD THESE, AND I FORGOT THEY EXISTED UNTIL THIS VIDEO!"
Who else had their Battle Beasts squaring off against the M.U.S.C.L.E. force? Was that just me?
James Rogers My Battle Beasts were forever fighting their mortal enemies the Army Ants.
I don't think I had enough of the M.U.S.C.L.E. figures to do that, but I remember having a ton of the Battle Beast figures... for their lack of articulation, they were still really fun to play with.
I did had a friend who did it to.
Oh Hell yea! That was the best part about owning both series of figures.
Battle Beast vs M.U.S.C.L.E vs Army Ants vs Garbage Pail Kids (small figures) vs Mighty Max vs Small M.O.T.U figures vs G.I. JOE vs Dino Riders vs anything that came out of vending machines vs .....
I didn’t know this was part of Transformers. I’m learning this 40 years later.
Deep diving into Transformers’ Japanese direction revealed so much weirdness, almost an MCU level connected universe! This would make a good series of videos!
Great episode! I can't believe there was a Transformers connection!
I'm still walking off the shock from learning.
It goes deeper even: The Titans Return monsterbots have titanmasters that are eerily similar to Battle Beast characters (Specifically, Doublcross/Twinferno and White Leo / Pirate Lion and Grotesque and Platinum Tiger). Titanmasters also only have 2 (effective) points of articulation... IVE GONE TOO DEEP.
HappyConsoleGamer Yes, Hasbro decided a separate brand for America.
Other interesting trivia. Takara licensed GI Joe from Hasbro but in Japan GI Joe became Henshin Cyborg. Some of the Henshin Cyborg toys later was licensed to Hasbro as Micronauts but some as Transformers. So some Transformers are evolved from GI Joe.
known about it since Toyfare magazine brought it up, and I'm not gonna lie: Dan's explanation of their connection IMO makes it shakey at *best* ; almost like there was no further intention or necessity to have them in the Transformers-verse aside from finding more merch to shill.
Bloody hell I had one action figure when I was very small, a purple elephant.
This channel is like a surgeon picking tiny pieces of memory one by one out of my brain.
Dude, I had completely forgotten about these gems! I love watching this channel and piecing together parts of my childhood from the mid to late 80s.
One of my fave toylines back in the day - affordable and completely lacking in support media so I could create my own world and characters with them - pure win! ^_^ I still have a shelf full and just this week made a custom figure of White Leo's sister, White Lune, who's been making appearances in the Japanese TransFormers pack-in comics from their Legends line ^.~
I still have all the original, and some of the customs and repaints i did. I also made up a lot of backstories and bios on the characters, going so far as to rename them, create teams, and even a map of the super-continent they lived on.
I still have the ones I had as a kid, though my favorite is/was the bat (ability was wood) :)
i remember them too but i also remember that the heat sticker came off easy. yea prob around 40-50 rubs but for a kid thats not much.
Married? Just joking. Are you married? Im just playing around. But if you arent married...ARE you married? No really...im messing around...but...
The best thing to do is to get a sly fox and paint it to look like her it dies have an uncanny resemblance
They actually did use some of the likenesses of the Battle Beasts for the Titan Returns line. I believe White Lio, renamed Daburu, is the "Headmaster" of Doublecross/ Twinferno.
Yep, and Grotusque had one as well, platinum Tiger, I think.
I totally forgot about this toy line! This jogged my memory and I remember playing with Battle Beasts on the bus ride to school with friends. These were awesome little figures for sure!
This is why I love this series. I had totally forgotten how much I loved these toys and as the memory of that time returns it brings back other great memories I had unrelated to these toys that I had forgotten as well like things I did with family or friends. Thanks so much for bringing back not only the joy I had with these toys but other lovely memories that might of never had returned if you didn't make me recall the ones about these toys!
I had two small battle beasts when I was 5, they were my favorite toys. I didn't know how I got them I just had them one day, didn't know what they were called where they came from or if I had just imagined them, good to know I'm not crazy.
I’ve rewatched this video more than any other Toy Galaxy video. ❤️
Whaaaaaaaaat??? I had these. Tons of these. I only just now discovered this connection to Transformers. I had no idea.
I LOVED these when I was little! I got in to them toward the end of their availability, but still managed to build quite the collection! Which was one of the benefits of being the first and only grandchild of very loving, generous grandparents. The white lion shown in this video, the green rabbit, and a porcupine/hedgehog with yellow armor, were my favorites!
I absolutely loved these small figures as a kid! Thank for doing this!
I’ve still got some of my old Battle Beasts. They were pretty popular here in Australia too. They’re still in quite good condition although their rub symbols gave up working many years ago.
Battle Beasts: Transformers spinoff. Mind blown.
How could hasbro not see the benefit of spinning battle beasts from Transformers ???
That was completely idiotic of them. Introducing that franchise in an episode of G1 Transformers would have given it so much exposure. No doubt hasbro today wishes they'd done that, they'd love to grow their own cinematic universe where GI Joe and Transformers and all the other things they own the rights to can appear in each other's movies before some existential threat forces them to band together in a great big crossover extravaganza
with blind bags in full force, it's time to rerelease battle beasts.
Good call!
Fuck blind bags. Worst thing that ever happened to toys.
They would probably be stingy and release 5 or 6 characters per wave. With 60+ characters that limits your chances of dupes, so with half a dozen they could sucker customers into keep buying hoping to get the ones they want. I worked for the trading card company that stocked these things in Target and a lot of times people would take a razor blade, and cut the back and peek in there, and put the bags back in the box if it was one they already had. Saw this a lot with those Five Nights At Freddy key chain figures 2-3 years ago.
I think this guy is on to something
No lie, I said "oh shit" multiple times during this one. Damn I forgot about Battle Beasts
I still have most of my Battle Beasts. My friends and I were obsessed with Battle Beasts and Monsters in my Pocket.
I was too old for toys when these dropped, but I noticed how cool they were in design. I never knew about these figures having a story with Transformers, very cool!
Hasbro did have a small homage the Battle Beasts during the 2016 Transformers Titans Return toyline. The deluxe class Twinferno (aka Doublecross) came with a Titan Master called Daburu whose robot mode was designed to resemble White Leo
I love battle beasts!
I always wondered where the Beast Wars came from and knowing about this I can totally see the connection.
Had a bunch of these toys as a kid. The Duck and Shark were the coolest.
Ahhhhhh! I remember these commercials, but forgot what the heck they were called. 1980s were a peculiar time for toys. By 1985 you couldn't sell a toy line unless you had an accompanying cartoon, and you couldn't keep a cartoon on the air unless it also had a toy line.
Did anybody buy these? There are some elements of 80s pop culture that I wonder if they actually happened or I just dreamed them.
You left out the whole reason why Battle Beasts battle:
..."For the Fun of it!"
This was an eye-opener. We get that much in-depth worldbuilding for the UK release in the 80s - all I remember is a commercial voiceover yelling, "Beasts that battle for the FUN of it!" (now go off and make up your own stories, kids).
Toy Galaxy: hey remember these toys?
Me: No.
Me: *watches Toy Galaxy video.
Me: Holy shit, I used to have some of those.
Yup. Me too.
I thought some of these toys were fever dreams.
Every damn video lol
Fantastic video! Very informative! I had no idea about the actual history of Battle Beasts! I was the only kid in my neighborhood who loved Battle Beasts in 1987! Only 36 years later do I learn that there were others out there who enjoy Battle Beasts as much as I did growing up! Keep making great videos!
'Battle Beasts! Battle Beasts! They battle for fun!' A pretty cool premise, even if the toy figures were too darn small for my liking, yes? By the way, us UK kids also got a Battle Beasts Kids' Annual for Christmas one year, the bulk of which was built around a Choose Your Own Adventure-style game where you played a Battle Beast trying to get from one side of the planet to the other without getting too badly clobbered by other Beasts in the process - it was a lot of fun, as I recall! (I've probably still got it in the attic somewhere...)
I loved these little guys growing up! I would find them in garage sales and thrift stores. I still have 5 on my shelf. Fingers crossed that you do Monster In My Pocket soon!
I remember this toy. It was popular in my neighborhood. A lot of memories with this toy .
Great video, really brought back some awesome memories. I'm from the UK and loved battle beasts growing up and still think I have some in the parents' garage somewhere. Anyway, yeah I'd watch a battle beasts film for sure and had no idea they started in the Transformers universe, so thank you for blowing my mind!
I totally forgot about these! Didn't remember the cartoon, but had a lot of the toys, they were awesome!
I was watching a bunch of these videos and was just thinking, "Man, they should do Battle Beasts," when I saw the link. Loved my shark guy!
I wish I knew about Battle Beasts when I was a kid because it definitely looked like something I could get into after being a fan of the anthro/mutant craze that took place during the popularity of TMNT. :D
My dad brought these from Canada to Peru in 1992, we migrated 1994 and a few years later, I forgot about them. I found them in a box with other toys and brought back so many memories, just found out the name of them and the whole story. I never knew anything about them until now, 30 years later
I had a blue ram, was one of my favourite toys, had no clue where it came from. Thank you.
This is insane..... I loved both in the 80s and never knew they had a connection!!! Wow!!!
Great video, lots of information!! Love it!
I had the comic as well. I liked the lore and storytelling behind the toys. Did not know about the Transformers connection.
Mind blown on the Transformers Connection
Wow, another of my favorite toy lines growing up that is still amazing to look at. Great history lesson on these guys, I never knew they had a cartoon conspiracy to go with their figures.
The Transformers Titans Return line had every release as a Headmaster. Twinferno was a Deluxe of this line, and his Headmaster was Daburu..... a certain white lion man with an eye patch.
So since my favorites were of the Wood faction, I would always begin with the Fire ones in possession of the vehicle being attacked by the Water faction. Once they had secured it, the Wood faction would jump on the opportunity to defeat them.
I'll be honest this toy line up was awesome. I had most of the collection. I miss the 80's toy line up.
Me too
Remember toxic mutators toys
Great toy history! I really enjoyed the video.
Great video!
My Battle Beasts and Dino Riders did not get along!
Huge Thank You Dan! I had a couple of these figures when I was a kid and never knew what they were, they were always some of my favorites even with their limited articulation but because I never knew what they were called I was never able to look for more of them. I know for sure that I had the grey fish guy with the purple armor, would love to know his name if anyone knows!
This has easily become one of my top favorite channels since I stumbled across it a few months ago, keep up the great work guys!
I remember these from when I was a kid , thanks for the trip down memory lane
man I loved these figures still have my favorites. You totally blew my mind with the transformers connection.
We love battle beasts and Crosley has watched your videos hundreds of times. ❤️❤️❤️
Very interesting video. I grew up in the Transformers and Battle Beast days and did not know there was a connecting there. I also collected Transformers and Battle Beast back in the day. While I don't have any Transformers now, hurts just thinking about that, I still have some Battle Beast. I will definitely try and watch that episode of Transformers. Thanks for the video.
Thank you I couldn't remember the name of these toys since it's been like 32 or 33 years ago since I played with them lol! I loved these toys as a kid and I was like the only one out of all my friends that collected these. I didn't see the show and new nothing about them but loved the size, look, and of course, holograms. I had no idea these characters had a connection to Transformers so pretty cool years later find this out, thanks for sharing.
The 2020 translated Transformers manga bought me here. I knew Toy Galaxy wouldn't fail me.
I forgot about these. I had a bunch of them. Gosh they were awsome
These are my favorite 80's collectible, thanks for doing a History of on these!
You're welcome!
One of my favorite toy lines! I have most of the Beast Saga figures, but the original line is still my favorite (but that's probably just nostalgia, the bane if my wallet). Also, the figures got a second life for me and my friends when we started playing the TMNT RPG. Suddenly we had a whole set of mutant animals the right size to use as minis.
If they made a Battle Beast movie, of course I would see it. What is not to like?
Great history and video!👍👍👍
I had a bunch of these when I was 3/4 years old. I remember my mom buying them for me when the were on displays by the door of Kay-B Toys.
I specifically remember playing with the elephant, the octopus, the bat, the camel, the kangaroo with metal boxing glove and the rhino.
Water, Fire, Wood, Sun and Moon.
It might be the Mandela Effect but I remember sun and moon being the 2 new factions and my Camel had a sun.
My favorite! Just wish their arms didn’t break off so easily! I didn’t know about Beast Saga! Thanks!
Brent Hill Arms breaking off too easily and the rub symbol decal always peeling off...still one of my favorite toy collections as a kid
Very cool! We had some battle beasts back in the day. Never knew about the connection to transformers though! Crazy
My favorite figure in this line was a duck in blue armor. I had no idea they were affiliated with the Transformers.
_"You bunch of lying liars!"_ - I'm going to use that one.
Do it!
I'll be spending the rest of my adult life actively searching for conversations into which I can overtly insert this gem.
@@SecretGalaxyTV My mind's still stuck on the way the bullies told off Arthur for lying at the end of "Arthur, World's Greatest Gleeper".
My absolute favorite toy line ever....ironically I don't think I ever had one as a kid, but that awesome commercial stayed burned in my brain for 30yrs. My collection is almost halfway complete & I even have 4 Laser Beast to my name. :)
I still have plans to get Battle Beasts tattoos I’ve been wanting for years! Again, thank you, TOY GALAXY!
Heck yes I’d watch the movie. I only had a handful of the figures, but it was cool with the wiping symbols.
Great Stuff, as always!
Actually, when the Battle Beats came out, my friends and I were playing D&D, other RPG, and some War games, we quickly make up rules to use them as war gaming figures.
Just wanted to say I've always wondered what this line was called. Had a dozen or so as a kid and lost my favorite "killer Carp" in playground at school in 4th grade. Have always regretted that day. lol
But now you've shown me new ways to spend my money on even more collectables from my youth! Outstanding! Killer Carp and Sawtooth Shark amongst others are in rout as we speak. Fantastic job and thank you. Keep up the great work.
Hands down my favorite toy from when I was a kid
I remember these toys! Used to love them, my brother and I had so much fun playing and fighting with the B B lol.
Have most of mine in a bag still, literally played with them more than my he-man
Now I'm wondering if this Transformers connection is what helped inspire the creation of the Beast Wars line.
oh man battle beasts! man I had a ton of these as a kid... I think most of them got lost to the ages though I think I may still have the motorized Ram tank around here somewhere hidden away in a box... I did see some of the anime that they did for those characters, I'll have to see if it's still on youtube and rewatch it!
I was going to say they should bring the series back, but I didn't know about the Japan-only 2012 revival.
Those Beast Saga figures just don't have the same charm to me. Same with the Diamond Select Minimates figures. Just don't feel the same.
yeah I'm inclined to agree the originals were better!
Man, I had absolutely no idea that there was a link between Transformers and Battle Beasts! That’s pretty cool. I actually remember having one or two Beast figures way back in the day, that I must’ve gotten second hand from a cousin or friend, at the time. I can’t really say I was head over heals for them, but I did think the symbol gimmick was cool.
I always just thought it was another toy line taking advantage of that rub symbol tech. Never occurred to me that it could actually be connected to TFs.
i had a bunch of these guys when i was a kid. the only remaining Battle beast i still own is the Egle with the glass marble in his chest.
Had a bunch of these! They were awesome!
Great episode. I did not know those battle beasts were originally a game! My friend and I had a few and I have no idea how we got them but they were fun toys.
I love your channel... I had a shit ton of these too... man... the nostalgia... ❤❤❤
I couldn't remember the name of these toys.I kept describing them till now I know.I loved these little guys.Battlebeasts ruled my world for 2 years or so.
I didn't know about the Transformers connection until just now!! 🤯
These were awesome. They made great Kings for my Muscle toys.
I liked these a lot. But if they had a more complex game mechanic and a connection to Transformers, they probably could have been my all time favorite toys.
I got so excited when I saw this! I have a complete collection of the American Battle Beasts, chariots and bases. It's something that I really hold near and dear to my heart. I was in my late teens when I found out about their Transformers connection, which ultimately saved the 20 or so that I had from a garage sale. A few years ago I decided to track down the ones I was missing and here I am today. Great video! I'm sharing it now!
Did you complete the set? Or did you just track down the ones you needed to RE-acquire?
Toy Galaxy I completed the set. The Pig one proved to be the hardest to find for me. I want to grab some laser beasts, but they are crazy expensive, as you mentioned.
These were hard to come by when I was a kid. I had a few of them fight my Transformers cassette figures.
WOW!
That was e / i
educational and informative.
Good stuff Dan. I still have the first two Battle Beasts I ever got on my entertainment system. They are the snake guy and the fish guy. I used to always call him a shark but I guess he's a fish.
I had so many of these. They each had those heat activated holographic stickers on them. So cool!
Aha! I knew the Sunburst thing was a conspiracy, haha. I had dozens of these guys as a young kid in the 80s and when I found out about Beast Saga I spent nearly $100 buying them because they seem like such a faithful reboot of Battle Beasts. Sad to see an absence of the rub stickers and weapon arms (I LOVED my Battle Beasts that had those weapon arms!) but I'm happy to see such a fresh take on a classic toy. Also, I'm downright astonished by how much Battle Beasts go for on eBay... Seems like I'll have a small fortune on my hands once I dig mine out of storage!
I LOVED these as a kid. I still have plenty of them. They held G. I. Joe weapons perfectly, as well lol
I had those as a kid, loved them. Also pretty sure I remember having that shark looking vehicle. One of them was kicking around in my old room at my parents house for like 20 years till he finally got the boot by my mom’s cleaning.
This explains one of the figures I was given to as a child back in the early nineties. It was an owl character that Unfortunatly, was lost during a move. And now I know where it was from. Thanks toy galaxy.
I wanted a Battle Beast cartoon as a kid. The commercials looked cool.
VERY good piece!!!
Thanks!
Oh, I had these toys. Yeah, I even remember the ones with the orb.
I looked this line up the other day to see if i could buy some, even loose these things are super expensive. I thought back to my baby sitters younger brother who had a whole crate of them back in the early 90's and thought man, hope he's still got those.
I don't even know how many of these i had. It was definitely an obsession
I still have a whole bucket of these! And most of them still have their arms attached!
