I agree. I was born in 1957. When I went to the store as a child it was an adventure. Younger generations seem to be in a constant hurry while life flies right by them. I love thunderstorms. I can sit in the yard and enjoy the gentle breezes, watching clouds float by and the smell of the fresh air. That is entertaining for myself.
I agree with you completely. I'm in my 40's and my kids love technology but also like to take pictures of mushrooms and walk in the rain. I think balance is what's missing for most these days.
Born in the 80s, I remember the days of hanging out at the mall and being inside "Toys R Us" it was a simpler time, I do like that shopping online is easier, but sometimes I miss the "Brick and Mortar" stores..reminds me of that show on Viceland "Abandoned" Ghost mall episode...
I was also born in 1957 and live in California where we could use some storms to put out all the fires going on now but instead October is starting with a heat wave. When I got shoved into racks by two woman who were fighting over an item, I decided online shopping was safer than dealing in public situations. Like I said I'm 65 and have a disability, I need to feel safe more than I need to interact with people. Stay healthy happy and safe. Blessed be
I was raised to buy from from local businesses and my father ran a tire shop for 53 years. He retired and is still working he is selling his tires at cost to the companies & friends that supported him for all those years. He makes me so proud and his friends that know what he is doing almost always give him a few extra bucks for his hard work & honesty!!!! Supoort the small guy🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I know what you mean Vic. I would rather go to a venue and see you in person. I also fear that the days of interaction may be coming to a slow down if not an end. I find myself going to the grocery store, not needing anything just to get out of the house. Well said and thank you for your efforts to entertain us in these depressing times. Take care and stay safe.
You already stated the answer: it IS NOT what most people prefer. You went to the physical store but the STORE didn't have the merchandise in stock and THAT is why you ended up ordering it online from Amazon. You didn't want to order online, likewise, MOST of us don't want retail stores to fail because we know human beings do still work there. It's nice to go out and physically go somewhere, including to shop. We detest being manipulated into spending money online and dealing with navigating a faceless website to find what MIGHT be what we need, but we won't know for sure until it arrives. Wrong item delivered or selected by the customer and then delivered? Now deal with the online returns and re-ordering and then more waiting for the thing we could've found and purchased in person much easier and even faster in the end if errors or delays occur. This video makes excellent points, though it seems to preach to the choir at times as WE already get it! The greedy businesses that run on skeleton crews and neglect the physical store's stock to up the likelihood of customers choosing to skip the trip to their store next time and just order online instead could learn something from watching this. Oh, wait...those types don't generally care about other people! They only care about money, even when it's in spite of having more than enough to last them another 5 lifetimes, and they're probably the same ones who would try to abolish physical cash for other people, were it up to them. 🤐 Thankfully, it ain't all up to them, so bring on the 2020 Bat Quarters! 🦇
I wonder about this. I also wonder if this is just a “western” thing. I want to believe that in other parts of the world, outside the USA and outside of capitalism, that there are cultures rooted in our values of old and that they still live by a code of ethics or morales that isn’t so self centered that everything else gets lost.
I still have the urge to shop in the stores - all the damn time. Browse the aisles and not have to decide way ahead of time what you were hungry for. I miss it.

Your absolutely right Vic! People can do practically everything from home now. Including school kids. I’ve noticed last year Christmas shopping in stores was not as busy. I did my doctor appointment by phone in March after they announced the Covid. Pretty soon no one will go outside! Sad what this world is coming to😓
Love ya, Vic! The voice of truth and reason in this crazy, mixed up world! I'd rather shop in store than online! We all need the sights and sounds of humanity in our lives! Besides, it's my excercise!!😁😘😘😘❤❤❤
I have exactly the same problem when I go to the store to purchase an item. Never in stock. But hey, I can order it online from that company, wait a week, and then drive to the store to pick it up. At a higher price. I don't like buying from Amazon due to the way they treat their workers, but it sure is easier.
I agree 100% Vic. Buying online costs people's jobs and reduced humans interaction. Couple that with I want to physically see, in person, what the hell I'm buying. For those reasons I never have, nor will I ever buy anything online. It's an inconvenience sometimes, but I choose people over greed and comfort.
I'm only 23 years old and I completely agree with you Vic. I really didn't think a future like this would happen. Or if it was going to happen, at least not this fast. And with this pandemic it's only made things a whole lot worse.
I’m 61, and I agree with you except for one thing. Long walks, nature, animals, good books, solo travel...this is what I live for now. I have very little social interaction now, and I am more at peace and fulfilled than ever before. If not for those things, then I wouldn’t want to be here.
I am 53 and i go back and forth from being curious to see what the future brings, and feeling that i have lived almost long enough. I love the internet because of all you can learn but also the simple pleasures of home.. trade off i guess

There's a science fiction story from freaking 1928 about this, titled "The Machine Stops," where everyone in the world stays in their apartment their whole lives while communicating and shopping entirely online. It's disturbingly relatable nearly a century later.

Its a different type of supply and demand, different way of shopping, i remember and still go to the store to check out the product, I agree with you about the style of shopping. I can't stand shopping on line, you can never get the right product or if the product us any good.
I hear ya! Went to big box store to get a vent for the dryer- they didn't have it. Came home looked on Amazon and there it was & it works way better than the original!!
When in need of a good laugh you rarely let me down. I feel like I'm near the end of the line, but my Daughter and Son and all their children have quite a way to go. That worries me. Good thing the pot is getting better and stronger!
The only reason shipping is free for Amazon is that the government subsidizes it. The government (your taxes) pays for all of Amazon's shipping costs. That's the only way they could have made it as big as they are.
Vic, I agree!! Just because you can do something, doesn't mean that you should!! For instance, I hate this drone delivery concept for companies like Amazon. I predict that it will be much more of a headache for everyone than anyone is anticipating. Try to imagine scaling up a beehive, to the size of an Amazon distribution center!! I think this would be great to deliver to rural and sparsely populated areas, more service equity for those fine folks. But deliveries in a city or even suburb will have its challenges. I think this is one of those areas, like you mentioned, where I don't think people are considering the unintended consequences. Vic, keep bringing the wisdom!!
Well said! Coming from someone who has been in “brick & mortar” retail for over 30 years. Retail isn’t what it used to be. To your comment about stores not having what you need and having to go online. Retailer aren’t ordering/stocking inventory like years past. Its just one way to cut costs. Not having to pay interest on carried inventory within the stores. Just one way to combat the online retail giants. Wish someone had the answers.
The same thing happened in Detroit when factory automation became a reality. The factory worker was displaced. We need to update our education system so people are prepared to start and run their own businesses from home in the information age rather than lose effectiveness in the changing market.
Maybe one day more will be able to learn how to make their own automobile in their own backyard and someone will reward and incentivize them for building themselves up.
I admit that for the last few years, I have done most of my Christmas shopping on-line. In fact, this year, I've done ALL of it, on-line ALREADY, as of this evening! First, shopping for those that you love and KNOW, is easy! What tick's ME off (so to speak ) is to get a generic gift that a loved one gives you, AND another "loved one" gets the SAME gift too! So get to know a person! Anyway, On-line shopping DOES take away SOME personal interactions between the seller an the buyer. Years ago, I used to like those interactions; those smiles and such. Vic, you hit the nail on the head, regarding how on-line shopping can be ANY GOOD for the retailers, and those that work there! For NOW, there still is a customer base (me too, when out, and looking at local stores for ideas and added gifts that might make someone happier by receiving it. I shopped mostly in stores, years ago, as I was not internet savvy, so to speak. Now, I shop more on line, for gifts I want to give to others, and things I would like to have myself that local stores don't have in their stores, but offer it on line! On-line shopping offers more of a category, and can personalize some gifts, that most local stores just can't do. Vic, yeah, I see our potential future. Simplified, alone behind a keyboard. it's already going in that direction, in some ways. WE ALL need to take a step back! The saying, "it is, what it is," I DO NOT LIKE THAT SAYING! It's a giving up statement. It's also a statement that says whatever is happening, is the norm or that nothing will change, or the TRUTH is not worth finding!
No truer words were ever spoken Vic. I think the big box stores started the decline. They killed mom & pop stores then it just spiraled out of control after that. I was born in 1958, I remember growing up in my small town we loved going "downtown" to shop. We had 2 shoe stores, a shoe repair shop, 3 clothing stores, grocery stores, 2 movie theaters, an Islay's, etc all located on the 'main street' of town. Now our 'main streets' are empty. On-line shopping is the new 'main street'. AND everything is built to break down in 5 years so you have to spend more money to buy a new whatever... What a waste. We have no more pride in anything built anymore. ☹️
Vic, I swear, every time I watch one of your videos, its a splitting mirror image of my mind, as if it were in another guy and speaking out, which I do say about everything you rant about, and I say it alot. Its refreshing to find others that dont have the "They Live" (80s movie with Rowdy Roddy Piper, classic cult film and if you havent seen it, TRUST ME, the way your temperament is and hiow you see the world, you'd LOVE the movie. dont go by the fact it has a wrestler in it, and also has Keith David (and was done by John Carpenter BTW in his prime)in it,anyways, its nice to see others who feel literally EXACTLY the same as I do..this is the type of shit I sit up at night thinking about..lol
I miss having a Walkman, CD player, having to go to a store to buy music or a computer game... The amount of people I see on the train stuck to their phones is crazy, in the street, McDonald’s, The whole world is suck on their phone...
I totally agree Vic!! I miss the good ole days when we could go to the arcades and video stores. People hung out at malls and parks. Parks ands malls would be packed full. Video stores, arcades and many other venues are gone now. Shopping malls and movie theaters are next and are slowly depleting. Shopping at stores will be a thing of the past. I understand its "progress". But alot of us just liked the old way better. Looking forward to your next video Vic! Thanks brother
Funny how the only this that's constant is change. I remember before the malls came along, when we went downtown and walked outside along the snowy sidewalks between each store....a store for shoes, one for clothes, one for toys, hardware, etc etc. The grocery stores were small and in our little neighborhoods. it wasn't necessarily better then. It was just different. Change marches on.
@@gmaneis I agree. It just sucks. I was born just after all that, that you experienced. When shopping malls were just becoming a "thing". Some things just need to be left alone.
Thanks Vic for sharing your thoughts with us. I find merit in your comments in every video I've ever seen. Its encouraging to me to know a person on the total opposite side of the country with probably a very different life experience from mine shares so many of my same observations, opinions, and values. It gives me some measure of hope and comfort in these totally upside down times. And a POX on anyone who gives you any guff! XXOO
I too have been asking this question Vic. I'm from the old school. It's just like buying shoes you have to try them on to see if they fit and they're comfortable. I still refuse to this day to buy anything online. if I can't touch it if I can't try it on if I can't see how it works then forget it I don't need it!
@@craigbeats1498 I worked on retail inventory, cycle counts for top items sold failed to be done. This is the reason most of the time. Retail workers are not trained and don't really care. Just there for a paycheck. Corporations just hiring warm bodies at low pay in my opinion. While CEOs are making millions.
A lot of this goes back to the larger freight railroads, they are running less trains but way larger . Its been going on for years . I worked in freight rail years ago, and the Rrs only care about the shareholders, not the shippers or their employees
The HVAC filters are a thing. I have 2 20x20x1, those are usually in stock at the local Lowe's or the other place. I have one more that is 12x12x1, those I can only ever find those online. You are right, they are cheaper, and I buy them by the 5 pack. Hell of a thing, that.
The truth is the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" has been replaced with "planned obsolescence". Things are being explicitly designed now to break or only last for a certain period of time, thereby forcing you to buy more in the future and guaranteeing more sales.
Went to a vacuum cleaner store in my area. They didn't have the bags and told me they were not available. I came home and looked on Amazon and there were the vacuum bags I needed. I couldn't believe the store didn't carry them anymore.
Thank you for your comments. I believe you are exactly right. I see my 2 year old grandson using an iPad and it makes me think we are not far from being legless beings :(
I'm really grateful I was born when I was, I grew up in the era of no internet, no cell phones, and the payphone was golden. If I live another 20 or 25 years I'll be impressed, but depressed at the same time... I wouldn't trade the 60s 70s or 80s for anything.....F### this millennial age in time, the world has been a disease since the year 2000
So so true. Was born in the 50's and the best memories I have are the times when my parents would bundle all my brother's and myself up head out in snow so deep and a heater on the car that took hours to warm everyone up just to cut a Christmas tree for the family. We never complained No sitting on a computer looking for a pre lit white tree that was made of plastic...lol... But your right in this video. This world is in a big big change and I don't like what I see so far. But your videos bring a smile to us everyday. From Canada with love .... :)
I am 58 and am sad my 12&13 year old grandkids won't experience the joys and freedoms we had as kids. Montgomery Wards was a huge deal. Home at streetlights best if before. Just a simple uncomplicated life.
So, I am an organizational psychologist. My specialty is exactly this -change management. Yes, you are correct, no one thought ahead. The reason - technology advanced faster than we were able to deal with it. It is a fact of progress. This is not a unique occurrence. We go through it with each social revolution - industrial revolution, the gilded age, etc. We are just now beginning to understand how people are affected by change psychologically. In many cases, it is impossible to anticipate just what industries will be affected by any change. You can anticipate some, but not all. For example, porcelain. When porcelain was developed, there was no way of knowing it would contribute to the demise of the vacuum tube industry years later. When photoreactive cells were developed, there was no way of knowing that they would lead to solar panels, which would lead to the lost jobs in the coal industry. One advancement often leads to other advancements rather quickly. Humans are unable, behaviorally, to handle rapid change. It is in our nature to resist any type of change. If it disrupts the status quo, we dislike it.
I know this is only one detail, but Stores CONSTANTLY Trash perfectly popular items that I and my significant others love! It annoys the heck out of us, and it's annoying to go waste time n gas trying to find it and they don't got it!!
Although I agree, it also depends on people shopping if a lot of retail jobs disappear. For instance, I always prefer buying groceries in person and when I go to make the big shopping at the beginning of the month I always go to a cashier lane instead of the self checkout. I only use those for when I'm just buying a handful of items. Also I try to use store pickup for a lot of stuff since that at least guarantees an employee will have to pick the items and interact with me when I arrive in store.
Yes Vic!! Your absolutely right!!! The more consumers by into it, the less skin to skin contact!!! Most high schoolers can't even address an envelope!!! I think this is one of those areas, like you mentioned, where I don't think people are considering the unintended consequences. Vic, keep bringing the wisdom!!
I love this guy! Vic, I love you, man! You are the real deal. Don't ever change. Please, keep doing what you do soo well.
I am old & so so glad I grew up when I did. I am proud of my growing up years.
I agree I think back in the old days was better all the way around . More respect, manners and family units
I miss those days. Now, everyone is only about themselves and it really sucks.
Do y'all remember when as a kid back in the day, you would actually go outside to play with other kids? now everything is online gaming...
Yeah and it’s sad . 😢
Ty vic somebody finally acknowledges this.
I know beyond all too well what you mean Vic. I could talk about this for hours. It's sad in too many ways.
He took the words right out of my mouth
You hit the nail on the head Vic!
I agree exactly. Look at the movie WALL-E Vic. Just like you were saying.
I was totally thinking about that movie!
Thought of that, also.
@gothicman03 LOL same!
I saw wall e. And that is exactly what I thought of.
Yep
MOST OF THE STORES ARE CLOSING!!!
Yes!!! Going to the CD store to look for music on a Friday afternoon was awesome, great times the 90s ! We are now headed for the abyss of doom
XXOO
I love this. Thank you so much. 😆
I don'r always agree but appreciate the thought and work you put in these vids Vic.
Vic, your videos are totally awesome.
From Dublin Ireland you are bang on
I too have been asking this question Vic. I'm from the old school. It's just like buying shoes you have to try them on to see if they fit and they're comfortable. I still refuse to this day to buy anything online. if I can't touch it if I can't try it on if I can't see how it works then forget it I don't need it!
I work pt at home depot in the plumbing dept. Those are NOT odd sizes. AMEN TO YOUR POST!
Everytime I need something the store is out of it.
Democrats want to limit the amount of hours truckers can drive per day. Plus no driving between 1 and 5 am. Imagine the stores then🤔🤔🤔
@@craigbeats1498 I worked on retail inventory, cycle counts for top items sold failed to be done. This is the reason most of the time. Retail workers are not trained and don't really care. Just there for a paycheck. Corporations just hiring warm bodies at low pay in my opinion. While CEOs are making millions.
Which is why we shop online.
Donna Sheppard yea these wages are disrespectful
A lot of this goes back to the larger freight railroads, they are running less trains but way larger . Its been going on for years . I worked in freight rail years ago, and the Rrs only care about the shareholders, not the shippers or their employees
I feel this. I feel this so strongly down in my jimmies. My root chakra. The box stores rarely have the thing I need in stock. It's infuriating.
Life as we knew is gone.
The future is frightening
The Corporate State of America where they will tattoo a bar code on you at birth and claim it's for your safety.
It used to be “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Now it’s “If it ain’t broke, break it.” (To justify some upper corporate mooch’s job).”
yep... DISRUPT!
👍
The truth is the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" has been replaced with "planned obsolescence". Things are being explicitly designed now to break or only last for a certain period of time, thereby forcing you to buy more in the future and guaranteeing more sales.
@@stevenbingham3061 ihave an o5 chevy colorado the frame rotted an front pass Whelan control arms fell off. But the paint had a warranty
As usual, you made me laugh, early in the morning. So true! Vic! Marie P. in Monroe
I wouldn't trade the 60s 70s or 80s for anything.....F### this millennial age in time, the world has been a disease since the year 2000
Here we go!!! My ticked off, Vic!!! Love him!!!♥
2020 has been so chaotic lately and life these ticked off vics are getting more frequent
Vic for president. A true logic thinker.
Born in 1988. I feel like my childhood was the bridge between the old era and new era.
You are always right. Vic 2020
I am 58 and am sad my 12&13 year old grandkids won't experience the joys and freedoms we had as kids. Montgomery Wards was a huge deal. Home at streetlights best if before. Just a simple uncomplicated life.
Im 58 and sweat my ass off doing vineyard work cause the young ones are too busy on their phones or they might hurt their delicate keyboard fingers
I hear you.
Lots of these young people have NO CLUE WHAT HARD WORK IS.
SHAMEFUL 😠😠
Spot on!
I luv this guys opinions!
I agree, you should stop by next time you’re up in Sussex county, we will sit down to some hot pasta and peas.
You nailed it vic.
Mr. Vick’s you’re right, so right makes a lot of sense to me:👍
I know this is only one detail, but Stores CONSTANTLY Trash perfectly popular items that I and my significant others love!
Let's go back to being more personable, talking on the phone, mailing cards and letters etc... we are all literally LOOSING IT!!! Social anxiety is on the rise!!!! As always, love you Vic!!! KEEP ON, KEEPIN ON!!!❤🤗🌻💕😘🌞👍👍👍😃
Thank you I deal with this on the day to day. I go to the Best Buy or target looking for some shit and they don’t have it or it’s overpriced so I go home and get it off amazon.
Vic you are sooo right. I’ve been telling people brick and mortar is going away~
My Grandfather the southern Appalachian farmer said; “In the ‘20’s we were in a mess and along came the Great Depression and a World War and straightened everything out”. Sad, but true.
Well said!
