Thank you for this very detailed and descriptive review. I actually really like "Even in the Shadows" myself. It's hard to believe it's been almost 6 years now since this album came out. I have been a fan of Enya since 1988 when Watermark was released. I was fortunate enough to have met Enya at a CD signing in New York City in 2000 when A Day Without Rain came out. It was a dream come true to have met her. My favourite artist of all time.
Thank you sooo much for reviewing this album, Arthur! I remember buying it back in 2015 when it came out. Back then I was not familiar with ENYA'S music so my initial reaction was not very positive. It wasn't until I started to listen carefully and truly "digest" each and every track, listening to the entire album on a loop almost every day, that I started to realise what a gem she had produced! It was so different to what I had heard before from any artist, yet so warm and inviting, reflective and magical. A whole new world opened up for me and I bought each and every album and single she has ever released! Almost two years later, I'm still listening to Dark Sky Island and it is my second favorite after Shepherd Moons. I had been searching all over for a proper in depth review on UA-cam to no avail, until I saw your video, that is. Again, thank you for doing this, I really enjoyed your review. All the best with your channel. You've earned yourself a subscriber☝, so do keep posting and don't lose heart! Warm regards from SOUTH AFRICA.......
AH Thank you so much for this comment!! I couldn't find a review of this album anywhere online either! So glad you fell in love with her music. I definitely will review all of her other albums!
I adore this album so much and her mature voice esp her lower registers are 🤌🏻chef’s kiss. Astra et Luna is the song I was just gagging throughout the song because of her singing like damn her voice is so strong. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard Enya sang like that so free like full voice with full and mature vibratos and her low register in Dark Sky Island bridge part is ugh I was just crying how beautiful this album is overall. First hearing the bass in the first chorus of the The Humming and I’m lost in the music. Even In The Shadows felt like there’s a rock influence to it bec hello Nicky recommended hihi and I’ve never heard a Da De da de da de eee so beautiful and powerful in my life. Diamonds in the Water is one of my faves. Been waiting for the new record it’s been 7 years. 🙏🏻
Congratulations for this comprehensive review. As for the song "Pale grass blue" which is one of my favorites on the album as well, I think the title refers to a kind of butterfly. Knowing that the lyrics take much more sense. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudozizeeria_maha
OMG Thanks for sharing that! The song makes so much more sense now...not that needed to make sense to begin with it's so beautiful...but the meaning of a butterfly in asia makes it even more poetic that's so cool you found that out
Pseudozizeeria maha, the pale grass blue, is a small butterfly found in Asia that belongs to the lycaenids or blues family. The album Dark Sky Island by Enya features a bonus track entitled "Pale Grass Blue", a song about observing a group of the species feeding and departing.
I like the review. The chorus of even in the shadows has a crash/sound effect which references a similar style on Storms in Africa, it was said in an interview that the forge of the angels is the name of the spacecraft that Celts would use on their journeys. I think the lowest tone Enya ever sang was on the chants of the 1st half of Cursum Perficio, though there is also a very low voicing on Tempus Vernum. And don't forget about the Olé Olé on March of the Celts. Now her lower tone is richer and stronger. Nicky always said Enya has a great lower register.
I hope you get to review Lisa Gerrard's albums. Lisa Gerrard uses made up language more than any other artist I know. Lisa Gerrard is probably my most favorite artist and Enya is my second favorite.

So I Could Find My Way was about Nicky's mother, but you're right, the sentiment is absolutely beautiful

Yes thank you! I recently learned of that and I wish I had known sooner :) Such a beautiful inspiration.
