I've absolutely loved Bad North because its one of those strategy games simple and light enough for me to actually be decent at LOL
Sure, the AI may not be the best, but I always loved the sense of life and activity it gives each soldier. If the Squads moved together and kept formation 100% like a bunch of robots it would really take away from the charm of seeing the little soldiers fight and move individually with little delays or distractions.
I can't say much about the difficulty, since I'm a simpleton lol. But I do agree about the simplicity of the game ultimately shooting itself in the foot. But, I don't think it's meant to be played over and over and over. I mean, yeah its a roguelike with some RNG elements to try and keep things fresh, but the simplicity of it makes it better to play in short bursts rather than long sessions.
Overall, I think the game is wonderfully simple in a good way, and very charming.

Not sure about the problem with the ai with you, they work perfectly fine with me. the Very Hard difficulty is very hard though.

Lets just say its very good indie game. the comp game most adapted for mobile gaming. autonomy of each troop is a positive thing, feels more organic in comparison with other strategies. Design and soundtrack is good, I keep some from Spotify. I genially want Bad North 2. New plot, more terrain and unit variety, PvP and PvE functions.

The controller controls on pc are the same as console controls. I've never had a problem with it, you can play at the same level no matter what platform you use. I personally use the quick select controls for controller, when I play it on console. The PC version has the additional bonus of being able to play the not so unbalanced older versions, having save file modifiers, and being able to be modded (as the admin of the modding server, yeah we're still working on that I promise.)
On the topic of difficulty, each one has a set number of turns, the higher the difficulty the less turns you have to clear islands. There are turns in very hard where you will see 4 islands all on the same turn, it's pretty wild. Obviously hard viking varients come sooner, and there are way more vikings in general. Each difficulty steps up the pace of the game, until, at the end of a very hard campaign, you're frantically using all the abilities and items you have to defend an island without losing any houses.
There are a few aspects of Bad North that players commonly engage in:
    1. The strategy and planning. Whenever you're on the map you're thinking _What upgrades do I get? What island do I go to next? What risks can I take?_
    2. Macro management, this is your real time tactics! Small tactics and recognizable patterns that you use to respond to the oncoming threats, this is your usual gameplay.
    3. Micro management, this is when you move your commanders around while they are currently in battle to chabge the odds ever so slightly more in your favor. You don't have to micro manage at all in order to beat the game even on Hard mode as long as you do the other parts well.
This is my interpretation of micro and macro management, as well as real time tactics (or RTT) which is a subgenre of RTS.
Okay, so the island generation has issues, and when Oskar tried to fix it meant that houses had less space to spawn, so the amount of coins in each campaign was way too little. To counteract that they added islands with tons of money, but it's implemented in the worst way possible. Eldorado is a word for a "city of gold" and also the name of a very specific kind of island generation. A massive flat island that always has extra enemy types, and is filled to the brim with houses. The issue is that they are flat, boring, and way to difficult. The only "terrain" you have to leverage is the houses around you, and those are really boring. I want to fix this in a mods, but that's a hobby atm and it's taking forever. Flat islands generate naturally without an eldorado as well, and no amount of walls or trees will make them any more interesting. My proposed solution is to remove flat islands from the game, and add bigger island that generate occasionally, along with eldorados that have special tower/multi-leveled buildings that give more money.
So, pikemen are not the best in the game. In fact they're the worst. Archers don't need high ground, put them on the shore, upgrade them to max, give them any combination of heavy weapons, fleet of foot, and ring of command, and watch as they slaughter all of the shield vikings coming to the island. Archers neutralize threats faster than anything else, and they can immediately be moved to take care of all the surrounding threats very quickly.
I have a whole essay on the game design and balancing of bad north that I've been meaning to make for some time, I might as well publish it this week. The premise is that archers were over powered in the very first version of the game, but the devs, bless their hearts, listened to community feedback. Archers got buff after buff after indirect buff until they were unstoppable as they are in the current version. From the heavy weapons and fleet of foot traits to the removal of the red infantry vikings. And that's skipping a few buffs :D
Archers are the meta, out of all the single class very hard mode challenge runs, archers only was the first one to be completed. Followed by infantry, then pikes, and finally militia. Gaaaahhhhhhh!
sorry I'm done ranting. Great review!

I honestly find it funny that your opinion on the controlable units in Bad North are the opposite of mine
The raw power of a Ring of Command, max upgraded archer unit. And the shield men are the only ones that can stand somewhat of a chance against brute archers (big boys with the bows).

    No, to these masterpieces.
Im a mobile guy most of the time so when I randomly came across Bad north, oh boy did I grinded this game so hard even though im not a tactic guy or just a casual gamer.
Its a *MASTERPIECE*, sure it has simple stuff and no lore but I love using my pikes to torture the big guys.
(Would love a level maker if this game git remastered)

1:35 I think the vikings we fight in game are essentially the vanguard of a much large fleet of vikings which are represented by the death line, where the line is more specifcally like a point where you'd be too overwhelmed by the main viking army.

  • @magniwalterbutnotwaltermag1479

This does a diservice the plains only islands. Some of my hardest (and most enjoyed) fights have been on those because it made my pikemen vulnerable and kept my troops on the move to cover dostant houses.
I remember fighting on one when giant archers started spawning from seperate directions and I had to frantically move the local archers and push my level 2 and 3 infantry to the front to soak up as much damage as possible. Even then I could only take down the first 3 archers just barely fast enough to keep my archers alive (they where down to 2 guys and the lord).
Plunge is also really useful for a majority of maps so investing in them is really good in reality (although that might be rng ypu can sorta tell from map icons if they are elevated).
Archers with the right trait like knockback can kill even giants or axe throwers before they get to land. Give them a weapon like warhammer and you can even make them really useful in a pinch if your infantry already have the command horn. They could also be really good for distracting enemies to a degree because from my experience enemies don't like getting shot at and run towards them, which can be useful if you already lost a house or are securing a specific one with pikemen.
Pikemen are as powerful as in the video. And the warhammer trick could be useful for th too but mines work better. Most other traits and tools are wasted on them and you're actually better off keeping them at level 2 for a majority of your run and investing in infantry and archers more.

The only problem with archers is the when you first get them don't put them on a cliff they are better on the ground their arrows can push enemies off the boats when you do upgrade them it doesn't matter where you put them they are more likely to hit the enemy

Playing on steamdeck you do at least get that slow down effect when moving troops. Still better on keyboard but if one is is great the other feels good still. Bad north was a fun little game with nice visuals. Personally grew up playing strongholds 1 and 2, Empire earth, Age of Empires and other old school rts games. Later played also warcraft 3, Dawn of War and Starcraft 2. Good Times.
