      Thank you so much, Cedric! You'll see that I haven't posted much for a couple years. During this time I'm been fully immersed in my own training and studies and I'm seeing some amazing results. Fortunately, these earlier videos are all still factually correct. I'll soon be posting again and plan to start a new profession as a voice building course with an online academy that's already in development. Please feel free to ask me any questions you have. I'm quick to respond.

      Excellent! I've reduced a lot of my vocal strain this past year, but I haven't gotten rid of all of it. This past year I've added some silent exercises to help train the lower throat to stay open and to permanently reposition the tongue so that it's raise and forward and out of the throat. It's helped a lot. My vocal problems with pressed phonation and ventricular dysphonia were pretty bad and I had them for 50 years so the muscle habits were deeply engrained. I'm nearly there. Good luck with everything. Thanks for stopping by.

      Hi Eric. That's a common problem for men, because we spend our whole lives speaking in the lower half of our voice and the muscle strength and coordination required to use the top half of our voice is missing. The only solution is to slowly and persistently add that needed strength and coordination through regular workouts. Additionally, those workouts must employ the right types of exercises, in the right sequence, and with the right scales (meaning the range of notes they cover).
      It's really not unlike someone who is thin and weak and starts working out at a gym. They can't just learn a quick trick and suddenly they have a strong, flexible body that can lift a lot of weight. They have to learn the right exercises in the right order with the appropriate amount of weight first. Then, they must train regularly to gradually add strength and flexibility. As they improve they can add a bit more weight. The equivalent of this for a singer is to use scales that go to slightly higher pitches when one has developed strength and coordination at the lower pitches.
      I went through all this recently with my own voice and am still working at it. I can say for certain that some exercises are much better than others for this work. I eventually created my own exercises and workouts from all the bits and pieces I've learned from others, as I never found someone teaching it as well as it could be taught.
      I'm improving at a faster rate than ever before. It's very fun to get better quickly and the changes are permanent.

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому +1

      I'm not understanding fully. I don't think that drinking cold water would cause the problem you are describing, except maybe if you're drinking very cold water at the time you are singing. Even then, I drink cold water when I'm singing and it doesn't bother me. Everyone is different.
      I do understand that we can sometimes sing differently with and without a microphone, though I wouldn't expect the difference to cause too many problems. Are you saying that, today, with a microphone, you sing high notes without any strain, and that you strain only when you sing without a mic?
      I would have to see and hear samples to gain a better understanding. I'm not a private lesson coach, by the way. I love to sing and train my voice and I'm sharing what I'm learning. I'm developing a home training course now that will be available soon.
      Last year were you singing your best? Did you have a strong voice with pitch accuracy up into the top portion of your voice? And then somehow you lost it?

      I will most definitely make you a video as I've been experimenting with some new exercises that are great for opening up access to the head voice.
      However, you must know that it is advised by all the great coaches of the past that young men going through puberty up to at least 18 shouldn't be doing heavy exercises on their voice. The vocal anatomy doesn't fully mature until you're 25.
      Fortunately, these exercises are very gentle, and they need to be. Too many people are trying to sing with strength and volume too high in their range when they aren't ready. The secret is to start light with your mouth closed or mostly closed and slowly build the coordination and strength.
      Remember to subscribe so UA-cam notifies you when new videos are up. I'm about to start creating lots and lots of videos, starting in about two weeks. I can make a video for you sooner, I think.

    Sir... whenever I try to hit somewhat high note beginning with sound ruuu... eee....my voice sounds very stressful...i can easily feel it on my throat.....and i have to apply a lot of power and pressure to execute those notes and mostly my voice breaks while doing that....But I can sing much more higher notes when there are words like wooo.....aaaa..
    Please help...

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому +2

      The sounds uuu and eee are usually the easiest for getting to high notes, but they also require less "power and pressure", which means you may want to use less, rather than more. At what note does it become stressful? Are you familiar with the keyboard number system? For example, does it become stressful at C4? D4? G4? That sort of thing.
      When you say you can get to higher notes with "wooo", isn't that the same vowel sound as "ruuu"? It's hard to know what vowel sound you're referring to. Also, in English the "a" sound has at least three pronunciations, so I'm not sure which you're referring to. In any case, "ah" as in "raw" is probably the hardest vowel to take in the high range which is why there's so much discussion about the need for "vowel modification".
      I had to change the way I train about a year ago, almost like starting over, because I always had too much strain in my voice. The change in my workouts have produced wonderful results. I do so much more training now with my mouth either closed completely, or partially closed, which is sometimes called "semi-occluded", using what are called "voiced fricatives". I'm not sure where you are at your level of knowing these phrases.
      Instead of putting more force into things, I finally went the opposite direction, and reduced the amount of force and focused on getting up and down my full range with no stress at all. If my voice breaks, fine. That's not a bad thing at all. It's just telling you when the vocalis muscle in your vocal folds has to surrender so the folds can stretch farther for higher notes.
      Starting next week I'm going to be much more active creating new videos and these are the things I'll be sharing, so subscribe and keep asking questions. There are solutions. It takes a lot of time and hard work, but the rewards are worth it.

      I am not much familiar with keyboard notes sir...
      And just one question I can't seem to reach the note A5 even in my falsetto...i just can't do it...no matter how hard I try...so is this something that cannot be helped?

    what do you mean singing with your mouth closed or partially closed??

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому

      Great question. When I say Closed-Mouth Variations (CMVs) I'm referring to exercises that are similar to humming. You probably understand that well enough. The sound resonates in your nasal cavity and comes out your nose.
      When I refer to partially closed, more formally called Semi-Occluded Variations (SOVs), I'm referring to making a vowel while using a type of consonant called a "voiced fricative". Some voiced fricatives are "v", "th", "z", and "s" as in the word "pleasure". With this family of exercises your soft palate is raised so the sound resonates in your mouth cavity and comes out your mouth. The friction caused by the voiced-fricative causes a slight build up of pressure just above the vocal folds and allows them to compress a little better.
      I've actually created a voiced-fricative hybrid that's like combining a "v" and a "w" and I use it with the "oo" vowel sound.
      Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by!

    How can I reach A4? I really want to sing Twist And Shout

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому +1

      I can't really answer that question specifically without knowing your voice a little better. It would depend on your voice type and your level of experience. Some men have very low voices and can't reach the A4. For most men, even tenors, the A4 is very hard to reach with a strong tone.
      In the end, we all get there the same way, with a lot of hard work and practice. You'll want to find a good voice building workout program for you in-home training and possibly a good voice coach if you want to go that route.
      I don't have a voice coach but I have developed a great workout that I do nearly every night and I'm improving very fast. I think having a great workout routine with exercises that target your areas of need is the most important way to grow the voice!

    I know I have the worst voice. Sometimes I've been said i sound like a crow when i sing. However i rlly want to sing. Thats why i wanted to ask to you: Is it actually possible for me to improve my voice and sing? Can I change my voice?

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  5 років тому +1

      Hi Neon. Five years ago I was a bad singer. I wasn't awful, but no one would have called me "good". Since then, I have improved so much it's crazy. I now sing very well and I'm getting better extremely fast.
      Anyone can get better at singing if they love to sing, love to learn and love to do the training. Some people want to sing well without putting in too much time and effort and that won't work. It's just like someone can't go from being a bad salsa dancer to a good dancer without a couple of years of regular lessons. It's the same for any hard activity or sport. You have to love it and love training and studying and putting in the time.
      Of course, you also need to be smart about it. Not all voice coaches are good coaches. Not all online vocal training courses are good courses. Some vocal exercises are much better than others.
      At least you're investing in yourself by studying videos and asking questions. You can ask me any question you'd like anywhere here at UA-cam or at my website and I will answer.
      Be sure to join my email list. Download the entire collection of free vocal scales at my site. There are almost 150 of them now in total.
      I actually envy you. Getting better at singing is so fun and you're right at the beginning so you have years of fun ahead of you. Yes, it will be frustrating at times. But overcoming challenges to do the things we love is what makes life rewarding.
      I'm here to help in any way I can. Thanks for stopping by.

    Hey sir ! I just wanna ask why It's hard for me to hit high notes with the sound o? Yes I can hit it, but It sounds bad. lol! help me sir.

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому

      Hi Aaron. Sorry for the delay getting to your question. I can't provide a specific answer since I don't know which notes you are trying to sing relative to your natural range and your level of experience and all that. Also, when you say "bad", that can also mean a number of different things, such as flat or sharp, forced or weak, too dark or too abrasive, etc. I can speak in general terms, though.
      The vocal instrument has three parts, the Aerator to provide air pressure (lungs, diaphragm and abdominal muscles), the Intonator to provide the initial tone (vocal folds and the muscles and cartilage of the larynx), and the resonator (the vocal tract and the moving parts that make up the vocal tract).
      These three sections must all be working together as one functional unit at all times. If at some point your singing sounds bad, then one, two or three of these sections of the instrument are being "played" improperly. There are dozens, maybe more, reasons that could cause it and this is why either private lessons or a digital course, or both are important, so you can learn what's causing the instrument to sound bad.
      Now, if you are able to sing other vowels at that same pitch where you have trouble singing the "o" sound (there are several "o" sounds, so I'm not sure which one you're referring to), the it may have to do with the way you are shaping the vocal tract because it is the shape of the vocal tract that determines the vowel sound. Sometimes it's as simple as change the position of your tongue and jaw to slightly change the vowel, sometimes there is more involved, such as with the face, head and neck muscles, the width of the lips and such.
      I hope that helps. Depending on your budget, I'd suggest you either read some books to gain a better understanding of how the voice works, or seek out some private lessons with a good coach, though I know that they are hard to find and can be expensive. I haven't had a private lesson for three years and I still get better all the time because of the training I do and because of all the books I've read and the things I've learned.

      @Vocalnebula  5 років тому +1

      If you're like me, you're probably doing more than one thing wrong. My high notes are finally sounding good. I had to change the way I breath and that made the first big difference. I would then recommend learning enough about vocal physiology, especially what's happening at the level of the larynx with the true and false vocal folds so that you are smarter in your training. Then, learn how to do all the best semi-occluded vocal exercise and do them over and over, trying to do them more and more correctly with time, until one day you don't have these problems anymore. That's what I did and I can say for certain that it works.

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому +1

      Hey, sorry I missed this. I used to get an email from UA-cam for every comment. I didn't get one for yours.
      I'm finally singing high notes with good strength and without excessive strain. How are you defining "high notes"? Which notes are you after? For me, it's up to at least A4 and even Bb4 is getting there. Bb4 is my 3rd passaggio and I'm training to navigate this passaggio without flipping to falsetto, so I can also have a strong B4 and C5, maybe up to D5 before I have to flip. Even then, I'm training my falsetto (M2) to be stronger so there's a good blend at the handoff.
      The key for most men is to, through steady, dedicated training, learn how to relax the thickness of the vocal folds so they can stretch for higher notes, without flipping to falsetto (are you familiar with the M1/M2 terminology?).
      Most men try to carry the same thickness from their speaking range up to and above middle C and then past the difficult passaggio around Eb4 to F4. Other men will simply flip to falsetto at this point. If you train to allow the vocalis muscle to relax ever so slightly with each consecutive half-step, without relaxing so much that it surrenders completely, while you navigate the acoustic challenges of these passaggios, eventually you'll get there.

    Is it normal that our tummy bloat up when singing?thanks for the answer.

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  6 років тому

      That's a great question! It depends on the breathing strategy you choose. Some people prefer the "down and out" breathing style which will make the belly bloat up a lot. I used to breathe this way for singing. Now, I do the "down and back" breathing, which will still create a small bulge, but it's not so noticeable. And the bulge isn't not in the middle of the belly, it's higher, in the area call "epigastrium", just below the sternum.
      When the diaphragm descends to fill the lungs with air, it pushes against the organs at the top of your gut cavity, especially the liver, spleen and stomach. These organs will be displaced and will move slightly forward. This is what is creating the bulge. When you exhale, they move back into their normal position. When you have really good posture, it's not very noticeable.

    • @rianegile1

      Joe Naab, Vocal Nebula
      Thank you so much for the prompt response. I really appreciate it ☺
      But how about when hitting high notes it causes the tummy bloat, just like while hitting high notes something inside pushes outward causing the tummy bloat?

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  6 років тому

      Strong high notes require more air pressure to move the vocal folds. This added air pressure must come from increased use of the abdominal muscles, as they are the primary muscles involved in exhale. These muscles anchor in the pelvic region and run up the sides of your body (your oblique muscles). So, the more active they are the more you will feel two sensations: 1) some muscle activity around the pelvic region where these muscle connect and 2) a sense of squeezing and muscle activity in the sides.
      This shouldn't cause any bulging. The bulge will be at it's maximum size at the very start of the phrase. You never want to push out against it at any time. Focus on what's happening at your sides. They should be drawing in and the bulge should be getting smaller as a consequence of air leaving the lungs. I no longer think about my belly at all. What happens with the bulge is a consequence of a strong down and back diaphragmatic contraction. I put my attention in the action and not the consequence of the action.
      What you are actually trying to do for the high notes is to move the bulge up and in under the lungs, not further forward.

      Strange. Could you be more specific. Are you saying that you're unable to download the files? Or do you download them, unzip them, and they don't play on your computer? If there's a problem I'd like to fix it. I'm concerned. Those files are downloaded by people everyday and no one has written me with an issue. I use the files everyday in my training to. Please let me know.

      @@rawstarmusic So your question is that you want to hear a sample of my singing to prove that I can sing high notes? You wrote, "Surely this logic is easy for you to follow", which is both condescending and rude. You wrote, "sing one high note", which is quite vague and not at all easy to follow. I sing high notes every day in my training and singing! You wrote "it is a fairly simple and direct response", but it isn't, unless English is your second language, maybe? Why would I be sharing tips that I don't practice myself? Isn't it "logical" and "simple" to conclude that I practice the tips that I share?
      I share samples of my singing at my website with people who express an interest in hearing something. However, I don't feel inclined to share anything with you since you aren't asking nicely.

    I am so tired of hearing about mask placement. It doesn't work well for all types of singers or styles of singing. Why limit yourself?

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  7 років тому +1

      I agree with you. I've just finished re-reading Jerome Hines' book, The Four Voices of Man. He describes four [edited from "three"] distinct styles of placement, one of the being "no placement", and only one of them is in the mask. Any singer can learn all four or stick with one. Each of the voice placements tend to be better suited to a range within the voice. I've been experimenting, mixing and matching, and it's quite cool. Lots of added tonal color and flexibility.
      Did I say in the video that all sound had to be placed in the mask? I've never held that belief and sorry if I gave that impression. I don't think placement was the subject of this video.

    Placing your voice? How exactly do you "place your voice"... I do not understand ... your voice is not a movable object.....

    • @Vocalnebula
      @Vocalnebula  5 років тому

      Hi Bryden. The phrase, "to place the voice" has been used in singing instruction for hundreds of years. It is referring to a feedback system, meaning it's where you feel the sensations of the vibrations caused by the sound waves that are traveling through your bone, muscle and other tissue.
      It's not meant to be taken literally, but it's actually one of the most useful skills to develop as a singer to better gauge if you're singing correctly or not.
      So, for example, if you're singing with great technique you'll feel a lot of vibration behind the eyes and forehead. Some feel it behind the nose. Sometimes the underside of the skull buzzes. Sometimes it's behind the ears. Not all places are necessarily good places. If you feel a lot of pressure building up in the throat then you've likely "place the voice" in the wrong place.
      Try to see beyond the words into what they are pointing to. In this case they are pointing to the location where you feel vibrations, good or bad, generally above the vocal folds to the top of your head.
      Does that make more sense? If you're expecting everything in singing to make perfect sense you'll find yourself disappointed over and over again. People say "chest voice" and "head voice" all the time, but you don't have a voice in your chest or head, so you have to know what they mean by it. The word "falsetto" has many different and conflicting definitions. The images and sensations and such can be fantastic tools once you know how to use them.

      @@Vocalnebula Hi Joe, applologies for the delay in reply. To a degree yes it makes sense, but raises more questions, head and chest voice I understand, as far as 'placement ' is concerned, how to achieve this, that is a different kettle of fish, I am a practiacal man and work on actionable instruction, I find it difficult to interpret 'abstract ideas', such as 'placing ones voice' what exactly is the technique? I am rather new in my vocal journey, and as such require understanding before practice. Once again, thank you for the videos.

      @@MrBryden007 Hi Bryden. It's okay to be frustrated as a beginning singing. We all go through it. So much of the language used in learning how to sing is non-sensical and abstract. I'm a very logical person and felt for a long time I could due without a lot of imagery and metaphor and such used in the learning process. I've come to embrace it because I understand it better now. It's not because someone sat me down and taught me step by step. I've just figured much of it out over time from having put in a lot of time training and studying.
      I'm going to eventually need to put this in a video where I can elaborate some. Let go of the word "placement" for a moment. With each phrase, whether it's a vocal exercise or part of a song you're singing, there is technique, good or bad, and feedback, desirable or not. Feedback is a blend of sight, sound and feeling (not emotional feeling, but physical). The field of feedback is essentially your whole body.
      Possibly the most important skill a beginning student can develop is a keen awareness of feedback. Examples can be pitch accuracy, muscle tension in the chest, knees locked tight, tipping the chin up too high, mouth opening too big, vocal folds pressing too tight together, false vocal folds pressing too tight together, too much or too little volume, etc. These are all components of technique. If any of them are off it will be reflected in the feedback field in some way.
      Within all the possibilities of feedback sensations, some of them are related to vibrational sensations felt anywhere in the neck, mouth, nasal cavities, face, skull, etc. Every part of your body above the vocal folds. Each change in technique will produce a corresponding change in sensation felt in this "potential field of placement". Good technique that produces a desirable sound will feel "placed" one way. Bad technique that produces an undesirable sound will feel another way. Even trickier is that we don't feel the same things from singer to singer, so there's no hard and fast rule, even if some teachers say that there is.
      A golfer doesn't place the ball in the cup, but the cup is the desired place. If the ball goes to the right place then the golfer used good technique. Similar examples can be used for a basketball player or soccer player shooting/kicking the ball from a distance. Good technique = good placement. Bad technique = bad placement. Placement is the result, the feedback. Technique is what is within our control.
      I don't so much attempt to "place the voice". I attempt to use good technique and I'm growing keenly aware of the feedback. I use the feedback to help me revise my technique. I have developed a type of internal map that says things like, "if the voice feels placed in the throat them I'm pressing my true folds and false folds too tightly together". I then adjust that portion of my technique and, if done correctly, the placement moves to a more desirable sensation and there's a corresponding improvement in sound.
      As to what technique produces correct placement, it's a long, long list. It begins with excellent breathing technique, followed by technical mastery of what happens in and around the vocal folds, followed by technical mastery of how we shape the vocal tract. If any link in the chain is broken, it will be felt and heard. This is why I have a coach. She sees and hears things that I don't always notice. And she has a coach! And her coach has a coach!
      A great coach named Allan Lindquist, who was also a great singer, said that he paid much more attention to how his singing felt, rather than how it sounded. I'm beginning to have this same realization. It's just that learning how your singing feels to you is also a skill that can take a long time to develop. Placement is how singing feels to you. Maybe that's the takeaway here.

    I took the time to watch your video in hopes of finding something useful. If you demonstrate what you are talking about first before giving an in-depth verbal description you might get more viewers, likes , and subscribers. You lost me after 2 minutes of non-stop talking and then the Yoga squat. No offense ... but not everybody that sings is able bodied enough to drop into a flatfooted squat to practice singing.

      Hi JB. I'm a little confused in that you said that you watched the video and then you say, "No offense...but not everybody that sings is able bodied enough to drop into a flatfooted squat to practice singing". And yet the very purpose of that first segment was to teach people who aren't abled bodied enough (myself included!) a way to actually do this by sitting on something that puts them in that position comfortably and takes all the pressure off the knees. That's why it took some extra time, right?
      If I just had said to "drop into a flatfooted squat" and left it at that, it would have saved some time but then no one would have learned of this great tip of how to do it comfortably!
      You say the video isn't useful, yet at the end, I share a link to the world's largest FREE collection of vocal scales on mp3, well over 100 audio files for 7 voice types. Tens of thousands of singers have downloaded those files.
      Think about it JB, you spend six minutes watching a video (with a 96% "like" rate) and then, a couple clicks later, you have a massive collection of the best piano scales for all the vocal training you're going to do for the rest of your life. I don't even ask for an email address in exchange for the mp3 files, and I have to pay a service every time they are downloaded! How is that not valuable?
      I do very much appreciate your comment. Thanks for stopping by and good luck in all you do.
