22-3 Weekend homesteading at the off grid shed to cabin build. Fireguard for the wood stove.

- The basic solar is working! I brought up the new 2000K Renogy inverter that I recently purchased to replace the old harbor freight model that I had used in the past. Unfortunately, it is much bigger and doesn't fit in the space that I had planned. Always a kink in the plan!. At least hanging the fire guard for the wood stove went fairly easily. Spring is still a long ways off but already I can tell that we have turned the corner. The days are a few minutes longer each new day and the skies are starting to be clear and blue more often. That dark grayness of the last couple of months has really got me in a funk this year and I'm ready for sunshine and warmer weather! I think that the next trip up to the off grid shed to cabin project will be more focused on enjoying the land and cabin. A little trout fishing may be a priority! Thanks for watching and we will see you soon.!
A man and his best friend living the simple life: nothing better than that.
So true!
Plugging away pays off. One day at a time. You got it man. Good show.
Hi John! Thank you for the comments. The fact that out of all the channels out there. How busy everyones life is..... But you take the time to not only choose my channel but to reach out to me... I appreciate you my friend.
cant say how awsome the dog is !!!! i lost my BOO in august ,,, still miss my buddy enjoy them everday !!!
So sad! I've lost 3 good boys so I feel your pain.
I love the relationship you have with River dog! He has unconditional love for you, you can see it in the way he looks at you. I think he loves going to camp as much as you do.
All I have to do is say the word "land" and he knows. He does this little happy dance all the way to the van
I enjoy your videos.
Awe! Thank you Steven. That is very nice of you to say.
You need one of those nice old fashioned wash basins
Yes, Ma'am. I was thinking that one of those old wash stands with the mirror would work nicely in that back corner by the bed.
That's some good livin right there!!!! Camera work and music great!
Thanks Bud!
Looking good. Plus you are a smart man being an Aldi shopper! Lol
Gotta stretch that dollar right?! Thanks for hanging out with us!
Lovely to see you say a blessing over your meal.
Thank you!
wow....feeding the birds right out of your hand....that is really great!!! They seemed so tame....not exposed to bad people I guess.
Both chickadees and nuthatches. Now if I could just get those Ravens to do it!!!
Thank god a guy finally has dry wood ready to go in cabin !
Yes sir!
Your dog is minds well. I admire your life!👍
Thank you very much!
THAT is my idea of camping!!! Fab cabin, a few conveniences, and a beautiful fire and a comfy bed! NICE!
LOL! I started out sleeping in my van barely of the highway. I broke my way through the woods little by little and now have a space that I can enjoy 4 seasons!
@@TRERUNSWILD Well, enjoy it for your lifetime!
I love your dog. What a great companion!
He is such a good boy. I'm very lucky to have him
another thing that works great for me starting fires at my camp is dryer lent from your dryer vent at home. every time the wife cleans the vent she keeps all the lent and i use that to start my fires. just a thought for ya, nice video!!
Yes! There actually was wax and lint in the egg cartons. I didn't realize how flammable it is!
Great video ! For what it’s worth I really like what you’re doing ! Meaning how u do it ! Love the cabin! How you narrate ! Your approach to the videos ! The content and what you share ! You’ve watched other videos and have taken the little pieces that you liked and made your channel yours and I really appreciate all of those pieces you’ve taken because those are also the parts and pieces I enjoy as a viewer of the channels I subscribe to ! My 2 cents worth. Lol. Take care
Thanks Tony! You’re exactly right. I do watch other videos and try to see what I liked about them. That’s part of my learning process. I just watched my last video on my tv and was really disappointed about how washed out the colts were with one of the cameras I used. It’s crazy How different it looks editing on the computer vs. the final after publish. My point is…. I hope to improve the quality and content as this channel grows. I always appreciate constructive criticism so feel free to mention that as well. It helps us both. Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate you!!
We enjoy every one of your videos. A great break from the global news of the day. Makes us feel with you, enjoying the cabin! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much!
Soooo enjoyed this video!! I’m a 77 year old young lady? but still love ❤️ the outdoors and watching River dog playing an all your hard work on cabin an cooking too!! God Bless 🙏🙏🙏🕊 Janie D
I love that you take the time to comment. It means something. We have lost that today, I bet you have lots to teach me so I hope you stick around!

Very much !
OMG....so glad I found your channel. It is so much fun....sorry I know you are trying your best and you do a great job, but I also identify with your struggles and really get a good laugh. Very entertaining to watch! Keep them coming. With your bad luck I would be praying too - and I do! lol Give River a hug for me!
Hi Deb. Thanks for the input! Some days it's one step forward two back, but at least I'm moving!! I will tell River you said Hi!
Love chickadees and nuthatches so sweet. 🕊❤️✨💯🙏🏻
Such cute little birds. I wish they stuck around in the summer. They must go north when its warm
I don’t know what I’d do without a German Shepherd beside me. I dread the day I’m too old to have one at my side. The current one is a lunatic but we love her, she’s our 3rd.
I was just thinking about how River is getting old. You can see his grey beard coming in. My heart will never be repaired after his loss breaks it. He is my second once in a lifetime dog, both sheps. I can't bear to lose another.
It’s difficult when the time comes, but we know they’ve had an amazing experience and love filled time with us. River has a fantastic life with you and so much fun chasing squirrels. Magen has a grey chin at 6 years but she plays like a puppy. All our Shepherds are a one off, hopefully the next 20 or 30 years will be full of their craziness, I’m 51 , looking for an adventure over the pond in the USA and Canada for my retirement in a few years. But not without a shepherd beside me. Thanks for your great content, I have to add that I was happy to see you saying grace in on of your other videos, everyone has their own beliefs and it was heartwarming to see you share yours.
@@dospalmascb we may be different in some ways but we are more the same than the differences. Love you bro.

Tre, another great video. Noticed the way you cleaned your table. If all else fails you could always buss tables. River is a keeper for sure. Blessing to you and yours.
Thanks Jim.
Tre So nice! You have done a nice job. I have 4 batteries and 2 chargers for all of my Ryobi tools.
Ugh! I can't believe I forgot the charger! I have two as well! One at the house and one in the tool bag.I left the tool bag one at the house. From now on I will leave that charger at the land. Especially since i have solar to charge then for free.
Cool cabin brother. Enjoying your videos.
Glad you like them!
Another great video. Thanks for the awesome content!
My pleasure!
Beautiful cabin!
Thank you!
We just started watching your videos and we like what we are seeing! Keep up the great work!
Welcome aboard!
I really enjoy the little by little work and projects each time. Not in a time crunch to get everything done. It’s a lot more realistic of a build and something that the Everyman can accomplish. Coming along great. Safe travels.
I will never run out of projects with all the plans I have for the property. If I went hard core all the time I think I would just get burned out and not even enjoy being there.
Hey there buddy - cool video especially fetch River Dog style. 🐕 😉 He's family and good people. 👍 couldn't ask for better co-pilot. The cabin is really coming along. Glad you're enjoying the beauty and peace up on your land. Excited to see you build out the interior and make progress on your projects. Thanks for sharing. Be well and stay safe. Your mate in NOLA.
One of these days I'm going to figure out a dutch oven jambalaya recipe in your honor. How is NO? Is life getting back to normal or is it still scrambling? I think of you often and how you had to evacuate. Covid made me rethink a lot of things and you're situation reinforced some of those preparedness and self reliant concerns that I was faced with.
@TRE RUNS-WILD Woot woot Jambalaya is the business! That would be amazing if you can sort out making one for the video channel. NOLA is mostly recovered. Except some of folks out in the bayous and swamps. They're still dealing with some issues. We're all dealing with insurance and/or FEMA claim stuff. (I evacuated just before the storm. My insurance covered my expenses in Miami and flying to Philly while I was a refugee. Now I'm filing a claim with FEMA to get my insurance deductible back.) I have a survival kit now for this hurricane season. But, to be honest if it looks bad I'll bail out again probably. I work remotely so, I must have power and reliable internet services. Along with drinking water sewer and trash removal. In the New Orleans summer heat, you need those and AC! I kept my survival kit refreshed in case we lose power for a prolonged period of time. It gives me a sense of confidence that I can get by without having to trash all my food in the fridge and can cook on gas hiking stove. Covid and Ida hit us at the same time. So, I have my escape planned if I need. I totally understand and respect your planning for self reliance and survival if and when things go sideways. If fact, you inspired me to take steps to be better prepared. I thank you my friend. Respect.

Watching your video I was thinking you got the cabin working pretty well now, you have arrived! Congrats! Must feel good.
I do feel good. Shelter, Free heat, now free electric! Things are shaping up!
Made my week seeing new content. 2 things, first is I heat my home with wood stove and the quickest fire starter is a toilet paper roll filled with dryer lint soaked in oil. No need for kindling as long as wood is dry. The other one i use is a silicone muffin pan fill with saw dust, not treated wood, or dryer lint then filled with paraffin wax. Great for camping also. Think about a 100 # propane tank for your stove, usually a fixed price to fill and running just a stove will last, I'm going on 9 months. I run 2 and rotate. Plus I have duel fuel generator that is hooked up in case of extended power outage
Hey Jon! Great tips! Plus a use for that used oil that sits around in the garage.
I use empty cardboard egg cartons for fire starters. Fill with sawdust or little pine cones and pour in hot wax. I pick up old candles at estate or garage sales and melt them in an old tea kettle on a single induction burner. This is a good project for the garage. There is a high risk of fire when melting wax over a flame or an electric stove. I pull out the wicks at the bottom of the pan, snip them in short lengths and stick them into the fire starter while it is still soft. Let them cool and then cut apart into individual sections. The wick makes easy to light. I store them in a big popcorn tin that I found at a thrift store. If you put out the word that you could use old candles, folks will be dropping them off by the bagful!
@@suelatendresse6905 Good way to use that last bit of candles instead of just throwing away.
You will be warm soon🤗
Soooooo tired of winter!!!

@@TRERUNSWILD don’t thank me!!! Thank you for hours of awesome videos!!! I stumbled across your channel one day looking for “prebuilt shed cabins” and your channel popped up. Been hooked ever since!!! Your doing exactly what I would love to do!!!
Another good one. Thankyou
Very welcome
Fire starter I find works great is taking a cardboard egg carton and cutting all the pods up separately. Pack each one with dryer lint, and just use left over kitchen animal grease from the fry pan. Put them in a ziploc bag. Good for at least 10 minute burn depending on how packed they are. All reused materials.
That is very much like what I used but using old grease is a much better source being its so common and you need to dump it anyway. Good tip!
You made the bread? Awesome. I can barely get hubby to make a grill cheese.
Window sill in kitchen looks vrry nice and very professional.
LOl! Its a really easy recipe. Maybe Ill make a short video on it.

I turn the music off to make it more realistic but then I have to watch the lips to see when to turn the sound back on . Great relationship with the birds eating out of your hand !!
Sometimes I feel like I need to fill dead air. Maybe not, I guess?
Beautiful
Thank you!
@@TRERUNSWILD ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I use the same Ryobi tools! I bought the airgun last year and so far so good. When installing the corregated metal heat shield, some people make spacers from metal conduit cut to the length you need. Drive the screws inside the conduit spacers. That would eliminate the wood spacers and improve airflow behind the metal heat shield. The window trim looks good. I dread doing that! - Dave
I didn't video that segment very well. I actually used ceramic fence insulators. The wood piece was just to try to get the bow out of the metal. I didn't leave it in there. Maybe I'll mention that in the next video. I love Ryobi. They have served me well.
Just stumbled upon your channel 2 days ago. I am loving your cabin & space in the woods. Was always a dream of my husband and I to do this. Discovered he had heart trouble 3 years ago & it changed our life plan. I can watch your videos & dream though. Looks like a beautiful place to enjoy life. Love your puppy too. So sweet!! That is very perceptive of you Kelly. I have not, but a friend is as this video is posting. Total coincidence. I actually just liked the music and the sound of the singers voice when I picked the song. I didn't mean it to be happy or sad. Not much snow there and looks warm, I just subscribed to your channel and telling you that up in Timmins ON, there is so much snow that we are starting to find a place to place it, and the days/nights are very cold at -5F and colder!
We have had quite a few nights of -20F to -35F this winter. Not much snow so far probably only about 2 feet standing on the ground.
With the box make it so you can store the battery bank in there. It will look better I'm sure.
Yes! That's what I was thinking also. Maybe the same tongue and groove on the side? I'm still trying to work out what that will

Wish l was there all best it's lovely
I love it there.!
Thank you so very much wat a lovely man you are l going up hills of Scotland on 4 April take care to both of yous still wish l was there how lucky you are all the best
Lost me on the heat reflector/shield on the wall. Did you leave the wooden spacers behind the corrugated metal? You did give me a great idea with it where you have washers and a nut on the back side of heat shield. That way you do not need wood spacers and the air flow would only be interrupted by the bolt going into the wall and no combustibles will be touching the heat shield. The cabin is looking great! Stay safe, warm, and healthy! Awaiting more solar trials!
yeah that was a video fail. I used ceramic electric wire fencer insulators behind the metal. I explained and showed it but the video was corrupt. So I never got to pst that, I should have done a better job of explaining it. I really appreciate your comments BWC, it makes my channel better, I will do a follow up comment on the next vid. I trust your honesty. keep the questions coming.
@@TRERUNSWILD my fault! You did say ceramic insulators! Way better idea! 💡! That will reflect the heat way better now! A lot safer idea too! Thank you!
If you intend to put spices on the window sill then you should decant them into containers that will block the sunlight, heat and UV radiation spoil food fast, this is why most food items that don't require refrigeration ask you to store them in a cool dark place.
Sorry to be a safety Sally but food safety used to be part of my job.
Ah! You have an excellent point. I actually noticed a change in the color of my hot sauce. I thought it was just getting old but I bet it was the sunlight now that you mention it. Thanks for the tip!
Another great video brother. Maybe you could find a used plow for the front of the van, and leave it at the gate going into your property with some tire chains? (Leave the mount on your van during the winter months) I think even in 2WD you’d make short work of the road.
Ive been talking about that with friends. LOL.. I even thought about fixing some 3xplywood to a welded frame. I already have a front hitch on the van. So maybe??? Hey? Love ya back bro.
@@TRERUNSWILD that would do it! Especially if you bolted a piece of 2” steel strap at the bottom and poly’d or painted it real thick, might last 4-5 years
Do what you can get done. Don't sweat what you can't. It all works out in my experience.
A circular saw blade turned backwards works ok for cutting tin.
That's great advice. Sometimes hard for me to swallow. But truth.

@@TRERUNSWILD even better!
Hi there!!
Hi Donna! Nice to see you back!
Fire starter, use birch bark. It’s the best. Thanks from, St. Paul Minnesota.
Hi John. I use it sometimes but it smokes so much.
Looking good ! I'm a Ryobi fan too and they make a 12v battery charger for you battery packs. Could charge from your solar battery or even the van cig lighter. Which would be way more efficient that using your inverter to power the standard battery charger that plugs into a 120v outlet :)
Take car - PAp
Oh! I had no idea. Thank you for that info!
Looking good every time. An Apartment size stove and oven would be great. Set it up to have the gas from grill tanks which you can tansport every time or leave as you wish. Just make sure the stove is set up for propane and not natural gas.
Yes! Like those little 20 inch stoves. I had one in my apt during my college years. Plus it wouldn't take up much space
Good Stuff Tre.....well everything except dead batteries and not charger, lol
Geez, I know! I right?! Better check that list twice next time.

Why not put the invertor and batteries in a insulated box on other side of wall in the artic entry and save on space and clutter inside. ??
Some of the other channels I watch have issues with the batteries outside the warmer house. Even insulated boxes without heat sources seem to be tough on them. At least that is the impression I'm getting. IDK?
@@TRERUNSWILD well the ones iv seen on outside are in insulated boxes and they don't have issues. At least your artic entry is semi inside and just as cold when your not there.

Love to follow along with the build! Started my build here this year, one thing about the stove. Have you thought about using a gas range out of a camper? Takes up less room than a regular kitchen stove and has all the same comforts of home!
Yes, I had thought about that and was thinking maybe I'd find a junked one. I haven't looked at new prices, maybe I'll revisit that idea.....
@@TRERUNSWILD I was able to find mine out of a junk trailer. Works great. I’m sure if you keep an eye open you’ll be able to find one. Especially during spring thaw when people realize their camper got wet over winter. I’m gonna do the 12V solar as well, one thing I’ve read up on is if you are leaving your battery there to make sure it isn’t charging when it gets below a certain temp. Not sure if the battery or solar charger has a temperature sensor. But that is one big thing I’ve researched on.
@@bshunting453 I wonder if that is just for lithium? I know people that leave lead acid out in the cold. I will have to look into that as well. I just received a 2000K Bluetti power bank and the first thing I noticed is that it wouldn't charge below 32F
@@TRERUNSWILD Some batteries or power bank will have a built in temperature switch/protector. AGM batteries can charge down to 14 degrees I believe. I am going to go with the victron solar charger and it has an additional option to have the thermometer function for the battery. This was you can set it up so it will not charge if its not above 32, helps protect the battery. I did see there are batteries however that have that built into them, but then you are talking a pretty penny!
@@bshunting453 I'm currently testing out the Bluetti 2k and was shocked to find out it wont charge below 32! I never even knew this was a thing. Living in the north where its below 32 for months straight is going to be an issue.
And you can use the cotton balls in place of the lent.
True!
Corn chips works as a fire starter
They do! I used them to start a fire about 4 videos ago. Not many people know that about them
Salted butter can stay without refrigeration for days in your butter dish on your spice shelf
Yes! that was my thought. My Grandmother used to have a butter dish on the counter at all times.
A doggie door would be nice.
Yes! In the spring. I'm thinking maybe a screen door but I might have to spend the money for an actual. Either way I have to do something to keep the squitors out!

Hi Paul. Nice to hear from you again! I hope you are well. Yes, it's cold here, what are the temps here you are at?
Do you want to put a spacer between the wall and the heat shield?
That is a really good catch Gerhard. I missed showing that fact in the video. I used ceramic fence post insulators for electric fences. It gives me about an 1.5" space of non-combustable.
