This is a video to describe the process to remove the Nexus 7 battery completely and power the Nexus 7 from an external source (not via the USB charging port). The reason to do this is that the N7 is being used as a car head unit and battery drain and over heating was a problem, Removal of the battery solved both of these problens and power is now taken directly from the car battery via a 5v voltage regulator (or cigarette charger)
Thank you, still useful in 2024. Still use the tablet daily. No good batteries left for sale, so I followed your video and now it's working with an external battery.
Thanks So Much !!! You brought my old Nexus 7 back to live in 2024. . I was trying without result, almost the same solution as yours but the key was the bridge betweek the ground cable and the connector to the USB cable. Now I a plan to place two 18650 batteries in parallel to make it more portable.
Again Thanks a lot !!
7 years later still resurrecting old Nexuses around the globe :D Thank you Kevin!
very well done, I would not of attempted this with out your video. thank you very much!
I'd like to ad a tip for someone else that trys this:
To avoid using a dremel and making a huge hole. before soldering the wires pre-drill the back part of the case and run the USB cable thru first.
Hello Sir. First of ALL thank you for this awesome video. I tried this on NExus 7 2012 1st gen and it WORK. Thank you a lot! :)
4 years late and this is still a really helpful video! For anyone coming after me, with a little bit of planning you can avoid cutting that giant hole in the tablet and just drill a small hole for the cable. Solder the wires after drilling the hole and running the cable.
Can't believe its 4 years old now this vid haha ... I have moved on from the N7 now, and have an Atoto A6 android head unit ... has some pro's and cons, main con is that I cant get it to BT tether for data ... hoping they will bring out a fix for that ... but quite happy with it ..
The reason the Timur Kernal Sleep function is not working for some of you after this Battery Modification is because you need a Diode on the Red wire inside USB cable which attaches to the Ignition USB Adapter.
My USB Ignition Adapter has led light on there (to see if it's on/off), so when I turn the ignition off, it should turn off, but it does not. That got me thinking why, the Nexus 7 is sending power down the Ignition USB cable even when it's in sleep leaving the Ignition USB Adapter on, even though the ignition is switched off, so the Nexus 7 would not know when the Igniton is off.
A simple small Diode (available from Radio Shack/Maplins) soldered in-line the Red wire inside USB Ignition cable, the direction of the Diode needs to be like this: Nexus 7 -------- Red Wire [||diode] ------ USB Ignition Adapter, so the diode sends ignition signal up to the Nexus 7 but the diode will stop the power coming back down.
This instantly fixed the issue, hope it helps the others
Thanks for that, I simply replaced my charger with LED for one with no LED, but your option should work fine
Thanks a bunch for this. I was wondering why my Nexus starts powering the USB Hub its connected to after the ignition is switched off. This is probably the solution. Let's see
Mitesh, is the diode added to the USB connecting to charger from otg?
I did the same Kevin Davis did & used a USB car charger without LED.
Hi, which red cable ? From battery card usb ? Or otg cable red wire ?
My N7 is still working in my car 7 years later thanks to this video.
THANK YOU!!
This was very helpful in my project to get a carplay tablet running in my car. I was able to do this with a Fire HD 8 plus 12 generation.
Guys this works great Kevin my issue was that I tested with a Samsung "mini" charger the regular white square ones, and it seems that the charger requires some kind of data confirmation from the phone / tablet before it sends voltage through the cable, tested with the car charger and everything worked perfect. Thanks a lot!
+JBTYpr Excellent, glad its all working now :).. have fun with the rest of the install :)..
Hi! I made this mod on my Nexus7 2013 LTE CarPC. Thanks for your great how-to!
The mod worked pretty well right away. But I would like to add some hints for others who want to take this attempt:
-Remove the SIM card holder BEVORE opening the case! Otherwise high risk of damage!
-As mentioned bevor, pre drill the cover and put thru the cable bevore soldering. Best spot is the area without any antena you can find on the opsite side of the Nexus logo. There is a molding mark like a circle. Drill abour 5mm below the center.
-I cut away the little part of the pcb board of the battery which conects to the 3rd (middle) contact of the battery by mistake. The mod worked anyway. After removing of the battery itself there is anyway no conection this part of the board could route to. But I dont have a clue what this little thing does normally.
-I tried the suggestion of another user, to solder a diode into the USB otg cable to bypass the suspend issue, I was also facing. It didnt work for me. I then used a adjustable step down converter. After some try and error I adjusted it to 4.8V. This gives a constant battery charge level of 75% and solved the suspend issue succesfully.
Maybe this helps some other whos!

Bye!
Thanks for comment and suggestions
After doing this, would this be able to connect a otg cable for external storage?
Yes
Wow! thanks, would i need to add any Custom ROMS or Kernels? or can i leave stock Files?
U2EZ Production you only need the Kernels if you want to use it for a car headunit. The Kernel is responsible for the wake and sleep function when you turn ignition on or off. If you want to use it eg as a smart home main control you dont need anything else.
In case you need help with setting up the N7 and a custom UI, you can follow my link above. There are further links in my videos description, which lead to a manual and a Dropbox link. There you will find all basics you need to setup the N7 as a headunit. Unfortunately the manual is in german. But in case you dont speak german, I think google translator can help pretty well.
Kevin you are DA MAN!!.. can't thank you enough for this.. i've dream this day since the first n7 came out.!
You sir are a genious thanks! Im about to perform an in dash install and was worried about heat killing the battery and reducing the utiity life of the tablet while mounted. will be doing this Before install.
For all who are going to do this remember this swaps your nexus power from the regular battery top the car battery so the tablet must always have power if you want it to stay on and react to micro usb power on "Charging" signal so wire that usb cable to a constant 12v usb power adapter.
+JBTYpr Dont forget to take a look at Timur's Kernel if you already dont know about it .. its specifically designed for car installs
yep i guess it is a must.
+Kevin Davis hey Kevin I did the mod today as Pero your video but I don't seem to be getting power to the tablet I used and old usb printer cable and measured the voltage coming in and it cm up To 0v, so I split a high quality micro usb cable to verify the cables inside but there is no negative lead and I also get 0v when measuring :/ current any tips?
+JBTYpr Did you connect the black wire at 14 minutes in the Video .. it will not work without this wire .. You need a USB cable that has a negative, maybe try a dedicated USB power cable (as opposed to a USB data cabe .. similar to this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Speed-Charge-Only-Micro-USB-2m-Charging-Cable-Android-Quality-Fast-Charger-/221266793926
Dude....this tutorial worked perfectly for my N7(2013)with m.m. 6.0.1, along with timur's latest rom/kernal. Thank you very much! Btw...tried doing the same to my N7(2012)with the usbrom kernal. Also worked, with otg cable, however.... it didn't like to be in fixed installation mode, and kept on going into suspend mode screen every few seconds, for some odd reason. Anyway works great with the N7 2013!
Thanks mate! Did this mod yesterday, installed in car today and works excellent. Goodbye to annoying inbuilt battery drain.
Does it continuous standby mode affects car battery when car kept idle for many days??
I was planning on doing this and have a BUC to do it.. Thanks for confirming it is working fine for me.
Awesome. I've been looking for this for months. There are so many idiots on here. I don't understand the second black wire, I'm going to try it without that. I'm not putting it in a car tho. I set up a tablet as a photo frame in the kitchen and the battery has expanded and is ruining the screen. 👍
i did this mod to my asus memo 7hd and it works fine and i had it in my 2010 crv..love it...the down side with asus memo is that the otg will not read your usb stick..other than that everythings works flawless, its been a month in my crv, i also hard wire the power button to an external so i can restart it. my next step is hard wire the volume to an external controlto control the volume up or down, still waitting for the volume button that i ordered from ebay. i hide my stock deck behide the tablet and had my head phone jack plug in my stock head unit aux..i will do a video when i get the volume button...cheers people.
+Wyn V I have stopped using the USB stick and now use my home computer as a cloud server and stream music from it (I have actually bought today a dedicated seagate cloud storage drive specifically for this purpose, as well as other storage needs), I am using www.tonido.com/ as the server software on the PC and they have an app that allows the device to access the server on the PC ... it just depends what data allowance you have .. I have unlimited so always stream my music collection or internet radio
+Kevin Davis wow lucky you that have unlimited data, mine is only 5 gigs a month so that will not work for me, i just ordered this TOSHIBA Canvio Wireless Adapter for External Hard Drive Black or usb and the idea is i will use that to stream direct to my tablet, i only paid $17 so if it works then awsome, i dont see why not..the adapter has its own wifi and looks very compact so my tablet can always connect and stream music from it..i am excited now but still waitting for a bunch of stuffs to come so i can try out..
+Wyn V Will be interested how that wireless adaptor performs .. Join my forum here and post your results with it (and anything else you think may be of interest) n7carputer.freeforums.net/
+Kevin Davis i just got the toshiba wireless adapter, they works wonderfull, i only test a 32 gigs usb drive, but if you have a hard drive it will work too, i had it plug in usb power on only when ignition is turn on and the conection to the tablet happen in 5 seconds, i love it, its like having an extra usb storage, the only down side is i dont like the toshiba apps, its plain but it does the job, i highly recomend those who have a tablet install in ur car and dont want to wire bunch of wires to otg, its only $19 with tax and free ship for those who lives in canada. best $19 that i have spend on..

Hi, The best info that I have read was on Volt daddy (i found it on google) Probably the most informative info on batteries and this same that I have found.
Thank you from 2020.
I have problem, during start my N7 turned off despite of direct line from bat, probably a super cap would do trick ?
Thank you mate !! You are a rockstar! Highly grateful for this!
Planning to do this in 2021 .. cheers
How Did You Set The Tablet To Sleep/Standby When The "Charger Is Removed"
Timur’s Kernel
Hey so I had the nexus wired up without the extra ground wire but it detects the battery and it drains it some how but when the tablet is restarted its back at 100%
hello very nice companion guide i wanted to ask you if it was possible to do it to a nexus 7 2012 for a car project thank you
Nice video. Next time can you shoot the video in landscape orientation and not in portrait orientation? It feels like we are looking through a slot or key hold.
You can attach this to a USB battery Pac and have a sub from the car charging that battery. you would need to either have a relay to control the power of the Nexus or you can have a separate switch.
Keeping a li-ion battery pack inside a heating car is very risky.
@@deepakrautela9342 or you can wire the USB battery inside a cooled freezer pack/insulated bag in the trunk. I agree that heat and LiOn batteries is dangerous.
@@ricksiddiqui8354 isn'it a good idea to replace li-ion battery with cars 12v battery using dc-dc step down converter?
this is great been struggling for a while trying to keep or get better charge on the Nexus 7 2013 even with timurs mod it was still crap, this is the best thing, ive been thinking this is what needs to be done, but being no electronics genius i wouldn't know were to start, there is another thing i would love and its an external power button, can you do a video on this please, its been some journey to have a reliable in car tablet mod hopefully im at the end of the struggle. my main use is torque program.
+The Unknown There are already some vids about adding an external power switch if you search UA-cam you will find them .. its something that I do not need to I wont be doing a video .. but glad you like the no battery mod :)..
+Kevin Davis do you mind if I have your email? Just a few more questions about Timburs Kernel etc. If you dont mind. Thanks for your reply as well!!!
+Joel Mendez Hi Joel, I am not going to give out my email here, but if you want to give me your email I will get back to you. Cheers
+Kevin Davis sure Ill send you a message. Check your you tube messages.
hello i have a question regarding this mod. are you constantly drawing power from the battery? if its only feed power when ignition is on how dose the tablet fair when the power is cut? .i.e turning the ignition off
It will die
Didn't you plug your charger in at the end? Can it not run without both chargers?
Hi Kevin! Thanks for the awesome video. I have done the setup and the tablet is running fine. My model in Nexus 7 2012. The problem that I am facing is that I am unable to connect it to my pc as a usb device. I had planned to use the nexus as an extended display, and it requires USB connection and ADB. When I plug in the device to my pc, there are no sign of connection at all. Is there any workaround for this?
+Kevin Davis I figured it out!
I tried out lots of things. Flashed ROMS, Kernels etc etc, but the problem is completely different.
1. Whenever I put load on my device, the processor speed increases and the device requires more current. When this happens, for a few seconds, my device gets connected to the PC, and all the USB features work. It keeps on connecting and disconnecting.
2. So I have flashed autodroid 4.4.4, based on slimkat. The default kernel is overclocked and provides 1.6 ghz instead of 1.3 Ghz. So I have set my minimum frequency to 1.4 Ghz and max to 1.6 Ghz. This way the device constantly requires more power and the USB connection became a little more stable.
3. The power cable, which replaced the battery, is also connected to my PC, so the nexus gets a little low current. And now finally the USB connection is stable and always on.
Hope this helps :)
Btw, I am using Splashtop Wired xDisplay, which extends my monitor. So now I use the Nexus as my second monitor and it works really nice. Helps a lot in multitasking!
How it is going to standby mode when charger disconnected?
Great video tuto. Thanks a lot for that. I followed your instructions point by point with my Nexus 2013 but at the end when I put the tablet on power (5Volt) the logo Google appeared on the screen for a vey short second disappearing immediately, then reappeared a few second later, disappearing once more and so and so. Any idea ?
try a 2amp power brick
exactly the same situation, bigger chager didn't change a thing
@@marvinwinkler7302 I tried a 3 amp one and it keeps shutting off. The original battery is 3.9 amps, I would assume at least a charger with 4 amps is needed.

Hello can you help me with all Project for my bmw e 46? What rom i must use to make from a tablet a multimedia and navigation System?
hello! so if I connect cable from battery to charger in car which always have power it will take all power even when ignite on? OTG cable to charger is only for wake up device or then it power a tablet?
Hi Kevin, Very informative and detailed video. I managed to get this done and it works. I have one question. Can the otg + charging y cable be connected to the usb port so that we can use it in a car dash install? Just wanted to know since the direct connection will already be supplying a constant source and then when you connect the otg + charging cable, that will be an additional source of power?. Thanks again for your help.
+Charles Baptista hi Charles, yes i did this mod for my car install in my dash, the otg cable is not relevant for charging any more, but in use with timure's kernel allows the N7 to enter suspend and wake up when the ign is switched off or on, and of course otg gives the benefit of using USB
Of all the Nexus 7 car install videos I've "researched" for my project, this one is my favorite (despite the fact that it's in portrait :). I take it there are ultimately two power feeds to the tablet, one directly to the motherboard via the battery leads that you converted/hacked, and the other via the OTG charging cable into the USB input. Just to confirm, the direct battery connection takes power from an 'always on' stepped down 5V connection to the car's battery whereas the OTG connection is connected to an 'ignition only' source and turns the unit on/off via Timur's kernel correct? So are you using two cigarette lighter adapters and does this mean that there is a constant (though slight) draw on the car's battery even while the unit is off? Do you have an idea how much of a draw it is and if the car battery could be compromised if the car isn't switched on for several days? Thanks again for taking the time to post this excellent tutorial.
+trinigerman Hi, Thanks for compliment :), sorry for the portrait, making a polished video doesnt really bother me, as long as all the info is there :) I am happy, yes you are right there are now 2 power supplies, the constant which is connected to the car battery, I am using a cigarette lighter 5v charger to power this, others have used step down power supplies, but a simple 5v car cigarette charge is fine (I bought one of those ones from a car spares shop with 3 sockets because I have other things I need powered too via a cigarette charger, and hid it behind the glove box). The second power supply is as you say IGN switched and is there purely to wake and sleep Timur's kernel via an OTG cable.
I have had my car standing for 3 weeks and still starts as usual after that period of time, of course it will depend on the capacity and state of your car batter .. but its such a minimal draw with normal use it should make no difference, If you know you are going to leave your car for several weeks you can always power down the N7 anyway.
@@kevindavis8442 So how does this actually work? I have seen other saying that youre supposed to have the always on battery power at 4.2v and then the ignition at 5v. You would program it to wake up while detecting higher voltage? Or you can have both at 5v and set it to wake up while detecting power from the OTG?
i tried on cheap tablet and worked. but i'm facing little problem. batterei control circuit is hot as hell when tablet screen on. circuit's cooling down when tablet on standby or on low brightness. did you try to touch battery control circuit?
Nice and clear video! I'm considering this. One little question: doesn't this drain your car's battery when its parked for a longer period of time? (for example for a month). Do you have special precautions to prevent this?
+timmyzeewolde I guess it depends how good your car battery is, The N7 while suspended only draws a very very small amount of power from the battery, I have a 2002 Mercedes and usually leave it for several weeks because I also drive a van, and the car always starts, if you know you are going to leave the car for a long period and are concerned, just shut the tablet down, there are several apps that provide a function to do this, I use this app play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=phongit.quickreboot if I need to shut it down
+Kevin Davis Thanks for the quick reply! I just bought a 2010 car, so im guessing the battery is pretty good (still have to check that though...). I will consider removing the nexus battery, however, I don't live in the warmest of environments. (still we have some sunny days..)
+timmyzeewolde it's an easily reversible mod, if you dont like it or you have problems with it, just buy a second hand N7 battery from ebay or similar site, and plug it back in .. I bought one for testing and it cost me only £7
Why do you leave there the thermal fuse at the + terminal? Is that necessary? I throw the rest of battery away (wit this fuse) :( and only got the circuit
Do u need power it on everytime manually
After performing the operation, the tablet turns on but after a minute it turns off. What could it be due to?
The solution was to connect the OTG cable, hehe e_e Thanks!!
So do you have to use two charging bricks now ?
One for the otg slot and one directly to the battery circuit
Not working for me :( Turn off automatic boot menü coming always. Any solutions ?
But.. I know nothing of the grounding of that one line. Kudos, and thanks!
When u unplug is it turned off or sleep ?
Resolved my problem!!!
I have few questions before i rip my Nexus 7.
1. If you disconnect the power supply from your altered battery site while the USB otg cable is still plugged and powered, does nexus immediately loses power or it still sustains from USB power?
2. Is the battery charging port and battery power delivery port same or different. I see tht battery is connected. Are there different wires for charging the battery and draining it ( in use state) in the connector which you ripped off (i see 2 black, red, orange, blue and green wires)
Thanks. BY the way, great job.
+, shahab ud din Hi,
1, I never tried it, but as the N7 pulls power from the battery rather than the USB charging port I would imagine that once the mod cable is pulled it wont take power from the USB .. I can test tomorrow
2, I will answer this question tomorrow when I have more time, just about to go to bed,
by the way join the new forum here n7carputer.freeforums.net/ for discussions and tips about the N7 car installs
Isn't the battery 3,7v? Doesn't it damage the circuits if you connect the battery terminals to 5v? Thanks!
Mine runs at 5.2v .. if you are worried you can get a variable voltage transformer .. I think the standard voltage is around 4.3v
Why do you need the ground jumper wire any way?
red rover because the battery is a pack of 2
Awesome video Kevin! Solved one of my issues I've had with my Nexus 7 1st gen! I just completed this mod and now my only issue is when I turn on the car, I have to manually power on the N7. Since this is a fixed installation, I guess there isn't any way for it to automatically boot up when the car's power is applie (ACC/Cranking car?) I'd appreciate any insight when it comes to this situation if there's anything you can suggest. I'd like to avoid having to add an external power button. Any help is appreciated! Thank you for looking.
+Rene R. Sanchez
You can try this n7carputer.freeforums.net/thread/17/power-on-nexus-pressing-button I have only tried it on a N7 2013, so do some research first, but it should be possible.
You can use 4.8v dc from 12v dc step down converter to power the device directly to battery connection and removing the battery.
Use usb charging power (when ignition on) to automate the task when "charger is connected" detected.
Nice mod! Since the tablet is directly powered by a usb charger, does it mean every single time you turn off the car, the tablet shuts off instead of going to suspend mode (Timur kernel power management)? Or do you hardwire directly to your car? If yes, which fuse did you hardwire your tablet to? Thanks!
I wired mine directly to the car via a cigarette charger adaptor (the mod power) .. and the cigarette charger is always powered .. the OTG usb charger then goes to an ignition switched live this will make the tablet sleep and wake through Timur's Kernel
@@kevindavis8442 I see, alright thanks for the tip!
Great and very helpful video ! Please tell me, are there any bad side effects or malfunctions as a result of external powet supply ?
+Michal R1234 I know a lot of people who have done this, and if its done exactly as I have shown there have been no reported side effects .. I have had it like this in my van now for a couple of months now and it all works perfectly, and of course no problems with the battery dying
hello how long the vehicle battery provides power
I really like your soldering iron would you let me know what brand and the model number? please. Great video by the way when I seen this I had to try it on an old 7 in. nextbook tablet. But the wires coming off the plug were a bit different it has 5 wires two red on one side one white in middle and two black on other side and I soldered the red and black wires from a usb cord with the ground jumper wire just the same as you done I plugged it in and to my surprise it works like it should.
Thanks for comment This is the soldering iron, www.portasol.com/product-r3.asp?P_ID=333
Hi, rtl2832u no streaming, Rtl2832u drivers not installed when there is no battery please
Was is not easier to just wire the part you removed from the battery to the usb charging port? So removing battery and direct power from usb port? Any specific reason not to power it through usb port?
for the application this is used for (and most will use it for i.e. an in car entertainment system), the USB port is needed via an OTG cable to turn the tablet on and off via the car's ignition, the tablet still needs to be permanently powered through the mod so that it does not reboot every time the ignition switch is turned off and on again.
after the procedure my N7 2012 keeps starting with the "Google Logo" and then the Logo disappears, but display ist still powered on. But it won't start normally into Android. Any Solutions?
It does the same to me. turn on Optimizing apps loop then again
I have the solution: The diameter of the wire has to be thicker. Try another USB cable instead.
does the circut spoil if I use for more time cause the battery supplys 3.5 volts and the charger supplies 4.5 vollts
My charger is supplying 5.3v and it has been doing it for over 12 months now with no problems ..
Great Video! I am thinking about trying this out myself when I mount this into my car's dash. Does this work powering from ACC? I am using tasker right now to turn on/off the display when any power is connected/disconnected.
+Jared Turner Oops, Didn't see the OTG in the end there. That makes perfect sense now! I can use the car battery yet still trigger tasker with the OTG.
+Jared Turner The mod is a permanent connection to the car battery via a 5v power supply (I use a cigarette charger), then you need the OTG cable into the usb port that wakes and sleeps the N7 .. I am using Timur's kernel for that timur.mobi/timurs-kernel-n7-2013/
+Kevin Davis I got around to doing this and it works great! However, I got the USB OTG working only once, usually stickmount would detect it but not anymore. Could my wiring be bad? I used a 2.1 amp cigarette lighter for testing.
+Kevin Davis I'm trying to power my tablet like in your other video when I turn on my car. Now can you confirm this connection
With Battery Removed:
Cigarette Charger Adapter--->USB CABLE--->Back of N7
Now I'm confused in the OTG Connection. How is it connected? Is it connected to another USB port? I can't see clearly from your video where is the OTG getting power from.
You can elaborate on you car connection if you wish.
Thanks.
+Joel Mendez So the new cable that is now in place of the old N7 battery goes to a permanent power supply (t the car battery) via a voltage regulator (that steps it down to around 4.3v), or a standard cigarette charger (this is what I use).
The OTG cable goes to the regular charging port of the N7 (on the side) .. this is only used now to wake and sleep the N7, and also for data transfer and connecting to your other devices DAC or memory card for example, it is now not used for charging the N7 as the mod now powers the N7 from the car battery.
Hey man, very nice guide. I followed it with 100% success and Im proud of myself.
But I have problem wen connecting usb otg with USB Hub(4 ports), It does not work anymore.
I can only connect one device to the OTG y cable but not a usb hub. Any suggestion why? Thanks.
I know this is ancient. But did you ever figure this out?

Juan Paredes I am quite sure you dont have enough ampers in your adapter. To many volts can be bad in long term, but you can have more amps that required.
çünkü direk 5 volt veriyor işlemci ısınıyor tablet kendini korumaya alıyor. yapılışı hatalı
This is a very cool idea but if I wanted to hook a cord into the bottom of the tablets original port to my PC and sync music from my PC media library to the tablet will that still work the same as before the rewire.
Yes, you are not touching the USB port, only the battery connections, essentially replacing the internal battery with an external battery
great mod I have an old 8'' NextBook tablet that takes all night to charge and then the battery will only run for 30 to 45 min. would like to try this on it but don't know if the wiring would be the same.
I couldnt really comment on that as I have only done the mod on a Nexus 7,
Tried the same mod on Asus fonepad 7 me372cg or k00e. But my mistake while removing circuits from battery I didn't removed the circuit to which battery terminal are attached I just removed the battery protection circuit and applied this procedure on on tht circuit strip, on tht circuit I had supplied 4.48v and connected through 5.2 volt in the charging port when power is supplied from both the places, tablet vibrates and battery charging symbol comes and after pressing the power button tablet starts some time with 100 percent battery some time 56 percent some time 62 percent but problem is as I start using apps namely Google maps or chrome tab shutdowns. Any solution, plz help.

Hi how are u kevin i just tried this and the tablet worked and one normal and once you touche the screan for unlock its off pleas help
With the battery management board still hooked up, do you still get temperature warnings and shutdowns on hot days, or does the extra ground wire somehow bypass this?
I had done the same mod to my battery (without the extra ground wire) and it works, but I still get temp warnings on hot days.
+Bad Drivers of Southern Illinois I am not really sure what the extra wire does to be honest, My N7 would not power up unless I had that wire on, but I have seen others do not have the extra wire connected and it still works fine.
I have not had any temperature issue's or shutdowns because of temperature since the mod, but I am in UK and it probably does not get as hot as the States do.
But the temperature sensor is still working as usual as it does display the temperature.
One thing you could try is to butcher the rear cover as much as you can, I mean cut out all the plastic that does not have anything attached to it, it may help dissipate the heat better and let it escape,
On an earlier incarnation I removed the battery and cut away all the plastic I could on the back cover, then wired a silent PC computer fan (the one that goes on the processor) and glued it to the back of the N7 over one of the vent holes I created to help draw heat out, I think I had 2 slots cut which , one to let air in and the other to take it away with the fan (wired to the ignition)
+Bad Drivers of Southern Illinois I have an idea. Most of the car radios are in central console with A/C vent on either sides. Make a hole in one of the vent ducts and securely connect ( so it does not whistle at high fan speed) a T shaped connector with the outer end connected to tubing that blows air over the back side of Nexus. No more heat ups if you are running AC. Hope it works. If it does not you can seal back the opening in duct with plastic refill glue.
An update to the temperature issue. I decided to finally try to find that sensor.
I started with the tablet on running an app that shows me the battery temperature. Using a soldering iron on low, i touched it to different components until i found one that spiked the temperature and shut the unit down due to overheating.
The Thermistor is a black component at the corner of the board opposite the connector wires. There is glue on most of these components but the thermistor was uncovered. I desoldered the thermistor and the tablet showed that it was now 32 degrees F. I thought this was perfect at first, but after shutting off the tablet, it wouldn't start back up, just blinked the white light five times.
So i decided that it needed something there to indicate a temperature other than absolute minimum. I measured the resistance of the thermistor at room temperature, 10k Ohm. I work at an electronics factory and asked the rework lady to solder on a 10kOhm chip. Tried the tablet when i got home and it showed 70 degreesF exactly and never moved.
I'm confident that it will no longer reset on hot days but only time will tell. It's supposed to get to 96F on Thursday. I guess we'll find out.
Is that possible to work on samsung tab 3?
Nice bid bro.....not the usual "hi guys, blah blah fucking blahhhhh!!!!.....well done mate. IMA save this and have a go when my battery dies. Keep on !
INCREDIBLLE !!! please help me lord of the nexus lol i do have a nexus 7 (2012) it is currently in my car as replacement of the original crappy computer, anyway lol i installed a switch ON/OFF near my lighter, so when you switch on the tab would launch itself and whenever i wanted to shutdown the tab i would use an app from android.. the switch is there to cut the tab from using the battery of my car as i do not use it during winter time ..do you think your system could work if it would work on a nexus 7 (2012) ?? please reply and great job
i try this but bootloop on Google logo. 😰 please help me
Have you solved ?
@@sedatb.3593 try to use charger 2-3A
will my otg still work mounting usb sticks stuff like that if I do this... can it work on standard kernel... no messing about just hardwiring the tablet and use the otg
+Daniel Gibben All the mod does is basically replace the internal N7 battery with an external battery, in our case its the car battery via a step down voltage regulator or a regular mobile phone cigarette charge, the N7 will work in normal way in every other aspect, so if OTG was working before on standard kernel, then it should work after this mod. Of course Timur's kernel has specific benefits for a car install so you may want to think about getting it.
I don't know how to put the kernel on it buddy... I also not clued up on rooting it neither. is this hard to do
I only want the otg for the reverse cam. nothing else as my head unit does all the audio stuff. the tablet going into my dash permanently I use Google maps and other stuff.
+Daniel Gibben Its not so hard to do, but you would need to do some reading up on how to do it, there is nexus root toolkit www.wugfresh.com/nrt/ which makes it quite a simple job to root and do all the nessassary things to be able to add the kernel, but timur's kernel only works with android 5, it wont work on android 6. I am not sure how the OTG system works on a stock N7 .. I know Timur's kernal allows for OTG operation and charging at the same time, of course with this mod you wont need charging, but the N7 would still need to see power to turn on and off,
You could potentially put a wireless charger at the back of the N7 and set a tasker up to wake and sleep the N7 when it senses power from the charger (turned on by ign key) I guess if there is a problem that stock does not allow for charging simultaneously with OTG operation.
Have a look around google for some of the things above to get a better idea
Hi Kevin,
I preformed this MOD. works good, only problem is I cannot get the tablet to go into suspended mode with Timur's rom after the procedure, I'm sending it 5v, I think it might be too much power, can you please advise what you did to get yours to work.
Have a read through this forum, it has been discussed there with severeal different solutions n7carputer.freeforums.net/
Hi Kevin. So I've done this mod and the tablet powers on. I've also got Timurs USB rom loaded. My current issue is when I remove power at it to enter sleep, it will go off but immediately turn back on. Power event manager sees otg even though power is off. Only way to stop power event manager from seeing otg it to unplug otg from tablet, then it enters sleep mode again and clearly doesn't turn back on. If I plug otg back in after this, it stays off. Any help? I've tried 2 different otg cables. Tablet is wired to car battery with regulator and inline fuse.
Hi, yes this is a common problem, the tablet still thinks it is charging after power has been removed, I had this problem and solved it by changing mu power adaptor for one with no LED (I assume the LED was creating a power feedback, others have solved it by using adjustable power regulators and setting the voltage to around 4.2 V
There is quite a lot of info about it in Timur's reddit page if you are a member and do a search, also some info here n7carputer.freeforums.net/thread/3/battery-mod
Kevin, I read a comment about a diode, so I added on to the USB connecting to the otg and into IGN power aka cigarette lighter. It didn't seem to work, am I placing the diode in the wrong spot in the circuit?
what app do you used to chek the battery?
Hey i did this method on my amazon fire tablet and it worked. But it has one major problem, when powered on tablet works perfectly fine but after few minutes it starts heating tremendously and then shutdown because of overheating. I have notice only a small area gets heated not cpu and not the battery pcb.
Can you help me why its overheating?
what voltage are you supplying?
you should check the rated voltage of the battery and supply that.
@@luisschubert6438 yeah i first tested it on 5v 1 amp supply but it didn't work but later then i remembered this video and tested on 5v 2amp and worked.
Great Mod...I have to give it a try! What soldering iron is that?
Its a gas powered iron, I have had it 20 years and used it when I was a mobile car alarm installer, I think this is the same one, but probably updated .. www.portasol.com/product-r3.asp?P_ID=333
this is interesting. so you can hook up 5v directly to your devices battery terminal? Is this limited to specific devices or will the same principle generally work on most devices such as tablets/smartphones?
Did you wire the battery controller directly to an usb source?
I just plugged it into a USB car charger for the power, but you could wire it to a 5v power supply,
@@kevindavis8442 Yeah, i just finished the Build. I read about some Modules doing 4.2 Volts but they dont work...
@@pilotpr0jekt883 You need at least 4.8
nice job, do you still need to use the power button to turn it on? or it will turn on automatically? thanks
You have to do some tinkering, have a look in the forum and you will find all the info you need n7carputer.freeforums.net/ essentially with a few changes, and wired into the car correctly, the car ign will wake and sleep it, it doesn't actually turn off (but you can if you can get to the on/off button
Kevin Davis do you think the same procedure apply for a nexus 7 2012?
For Power on AC try to use "fastboot oem-off-mode charge 0" on the 2012 Model this works.
im Not 100% sure that this will work on the 2013 model. better google it before
Frank T. thanks. I was talking about the removal of battery and directly power the tablet as mine is 2012. already applied the startup tweak when powering by USB. thanks again
Again have a look through the forum, it has been done on the 2012 and explained very well ...
Hey Kevin do you have a guide on how to do this on a 2012 Nexus 7, is it a similar process?
I dont, and I would not like to say because I have never done it on the 2012 N7, but some people in the forum have done it, might be best to sign up there and ask them for advice n7carputer.freeforums.net/
Thanks Kevin
Hey there, I've watched your video here & was wondering if you shed some insight on some thoughts and theories I have dealing with a very similar thing. I have a project that I want to do with an install of a tablet (specifically the "nvidia shield k1" tablet) into my car dash. I'm debating if I want to keep the tablet battery connected or if I want to convert that tablet in a way so that I can run it solely off of the usb connection/charger. I don't have much experience with such a thing (not much wiring, just some basic stuff).
now I've seen how to run tablets and phones on usb cables(which I figured was possibly as I have done simple wiring like this for mini fans etc) just by simply;
1) splicing the cable,
2) snipping off the green & white data wires
3) snipping the battery off it's wires OR unsoldring the battery & wires from the board.
4) attaching the remaining snipped red & black battery wires to the red & black (+/-) wires of the usb charging cable... or soldering the usb wires directing to the board in place of the originals.
or in this case like your video keeping and using the top piece of the battery(like as required for that specific tab).
That method looks like it seems to work (not sure if always on all tabs & phones).
But I was wondering if the battery could be snipped from the wires but the wires(+/-) be left connected to the board.
then,
1) splice into a high speed usb charging cable(center just a hole) & snip the green & white data wires.
(so that the cable will specifically charge only)
& wrap it back up keeping both male & female/A/B ends intact.
2) take those still connected to the motherboard power wires that the battery was connected to(possibly have to be extended in length a little) & attach them directly to the usb port on the device?.
(would this then create a closed connections/full circle/like an alternator?).
3) this way when the usb charger is plugged into both a usb 5v power supply and to the tablet, the tablet would then get the power needed to run/operate solely off of the usb charger cable only, without a battery but with a nice clean connection (no exposed wires etc).
This is all in theory of course ! lol
but the tablet would then;
A) run/operate on a usb power when connected to a usb changing cable.
(and would power on and/or off only when the car/5v power source is turned on and/or off.)
B) The tablet would also have a very clean/nice connection to the power via USB port on the device.
C) The tablet would be closed back up (backing/cover replaced) and you wouldn't even know there was any modifications made to it or that there isn't a battery inside other than a maybe possible change in weight.
D) for an removable style install, the tablet can be easier removed and inserted back in and out of the vehicle with ease and not have to worry about wrapping a dangling cord around the tablet when you take it out of the car.
E) if desired, the tablet could also be left inside the car(if you didn't want to carry it with you all the time) and there wouldn't be any need/cause for worry/concerns etc of the tablets lithium battery being damaged/ruined/overheated/exploding/imploding or causing a fire do to overheating in a car oven on a hot summer day. and if any worries at all you could just simply disconnect the usb power from the device and still leave it in the car with no further worries.
Have you ever done this before(I mean the wiring/connections portion using the usb port itself to actually run a tablet) ?
And do you know if this could work ?
or is it even possible ?.
Thanks in advance for you reply/response
So my question is, since you removed the battery how the hell can the tablet go into suspended sleep?
Everything explained in the link above
@@kevindavis8442 where?
If I plug in the charger will it charge or just make the tablet think it's charging
If you have removed the battery there is no battery to charge, it will just trick the N7 into thinking it is charging
Kevin Davis but won't it attempt to charge the car battery
Can you describe the steps you used to make your nexus 7 not turn off or what kind of hacks or tweaks you have installed
+abel09011 you can set the N7 screen to stay on when the USB is plugged in and
power connected in developer options. We use Timur's kernel to control
the suspend and the OTG management of the tablet, search for timur's
kernel
+Kevin Davis can i do the same steps if i want to directly connect the 2012 model directly to the battery? the reason why im asking is that my nexus drain like 60 % overnight and im using timurs kernel with all wakeup alarms off tasker, etc.
+abel09011 I didn't attempt this on a 2012 N7 so I couldn't really say, but I would have thought the process should be similar .. but I couldn't say for definite. But if you are getting 60% drain then maybe there is some app or service that is draining the battery and a fresh restore may fix the issue ???.. Unless of course your battery is dying and not holding charge.
thaaaannnnk youuuuuu!!!
Will the same procedure apply to asus memo pad 7? Does micro usb work after this transaction do data-driven shopping? Thank you
I am sorry but I cannot comment on that as I have not tried it on that tablet model
What is the tip called ID in the poker battery. One of the two cable stands in the middle, but which one? Thank you
Let me know if you do thi as I have a Asus Memo Pad 7 LTE as well!
Yes we take out the battery and work it when we give positive and negatife pole 3.8 v ..
sezgin gök awesome! I will look into doing this. thanks!
Hi, I have got one problem, when I connect the OTG and charger it is always charging, also when disconnect energy, only stops charging when I disconnect OTG of the port.
+Javi Vaz This is a problem that many people had, not just with the no battery mod, we found that if you have a cigarette charger with a light indicator (LED light), this could cause what we think is a power feedback which makes the N7 think that is is still powered, With my first charger the LED light would still stay on as I believe it was drawing power back from the N7 and creating the power loop
My solution, and the solution of others was to get a cigarette charger with no indicator light, solved the problem.
+Kevin Davis I am using charger of tablet 2A, and for the OTG 1A in house, in the car I have got the same problem( using charger the LED light)
Should try with the charger without the LED light for car anyway?
+Javi Vaz Yes try it .. they are pretty cheap to buy, This is the one I am using www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-12V-5V-3A-3000mA-Double-USB-Car-Charger-Power-Supply-Fag-Lighter-Socket-/121013756178?hash=item1c2cfb6112:m:mJRJK6dtbe54nGQ3A9jFe5Q
And are you using Timur's Kernel ?
+Kevin Davis yes, I have got Timur´s Kernel, with battery I haven´t got the problem, and this? it is more cheaper www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-2-Port-USB-Car-Charger-For-iPad-Air-iPhone-6-4-7-6-Plus-5-5-3-A-Black-UK-/221552390472?hash=item33958d3148:g:H5QAAOSwnDZT1eYT
You need to try it, I dont have one of those, but it doesn't appear to have an LED light so should be ok
hello how long the vehicle battery provides power
I guess it depends how big your car battery is, how good it is, how old it is and how well it hold's charge, and how long you leave the car before starting the engine .. I have left mine standing for 3 weeks with no apparent problems
Thank you, 60 amp 12 volt battery I bought a month ago
+Ali Şimşek sorry but I can not tell you how long the battery will last
Hey Kevin can take a quick look at your forum
n7carputer.freeforums.net/thread/3/battery-mod?page=3&scrollTo=150
Thanks for sharing us this modification :)
Kevin, with this mod is it possible to connect the n7 to the computer?
Yes, all USB functions remain the same, essentially all that is happening is the internal battery is bieng replaced by an external battery, there are no other effects to the N7
+Kevin Davis thanks Kevin, for some reason when I connect the Nexus 7 to the computer it does not pop up. Any suggestions?
+Charles Baptista have you selected MTP in the USB settings (if your on marshmallow you have to drop it down from the notification bar
i did this and my dont turn on ?
if you want it more fancy and control your player with steering wheel here is one if your car come with steering wheel audio control, mine does not come with steering wheel cause its an LX model..i wish it does come with one..

nic3 diy... only if there was a way to get rid of "holding power button" everytime you turn on the ignition key!!
What do you mean holding the power button ?
There is.
With your device in bootloader mode, connect it to your PC, enter fastboot command: fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0
This will power on your device everytime you connect it to a charging source.
you dont talk much, do you? :D thx for the video!
Not much to say .. video says it all :)
Do you have a guide for 2012 Nexus, too?
The components of the Battery board look the same but there is a black wire loop. It says TH on the Board. Should I just try it youre mod or should I be careful? thank you!
If you go to the forum listed above, somebody has done a guide there for 2012 N7, I personally have not so would not like to advise on it.

Awesome video, planning to do this to my install and make an update video about it. Right now this is my current install ua-cam.com/video/iniACymrgSU/v-deo.html
+DarkN3ss Thanks for comment, My suggestion with your setup would be to use the Beringer DAC still for the audio, USB out from N7 to the DAC, then the DAC to the AUX of your head unit, you can also use the mic in (may be called monitor, cant quite remember) of the DAC to control google voice etc.
Kevin Davis Thats a good idea, I can take the mic from the head deck and split it so it goes to the head unit and the tablet/dac
I think it needs to be a mic with a pre-amp, you can find them on ebay
i try this on a lg g pad f and i can see the lg logo and keeps booting over and over, noob needs help
Hi mate, just posted on your forum (n7carputer.freeforums.net/thread/3/battery-mod?page=2)
Have you had any updates or heard of anyone who has fixed this issue with power not being detected through the microusb port?
+DarkN3ss You have to use a charger without an LED light on it, this for some reason creates some sort of power loop that makes the tablet think it is still charging
+Kevin Davis wait didn't you say you weren't sure how to fix it? Also that aside, can I just remove the led?
Never said I was not sure how to fix it, I dont have a 2012 N7 so not sure of those problems and how to fix them on the 2012 .. but on the 2013 its to use a charger with no LED .. not tried taking out the LED so can't comment on that.
+Kevin Davis awesome, thanks for the help. I will try take it out and see if that makes a difference. I also have 2 others on the way without LED's (by share luck) that should hopefully work
