Great video, Tom! Can you talk about your favorite water resistant/proof inks and whether or not they are safe for even your most precious pens?
I'm watching this on Feb 27 and just got to the section about the amethyst Kaweco. I immediately paused an went to purchase - purple is my favorite color and I really love the translucent Kawecos! Excited to get mine. :D
Tom, many brands have either re-emerged from extinction or moved to other continents, or otherwise changed their identity, sometimes dramatically. I'm thinking of the different plastic the original Parker 51 used, compared to the later material, or the difference between earlier Pilot Elite compared to newer, different shaped and lower gold content pens. Then there are the clear levels between the green or blue or other colors on many Pelikan barrels that have recently been replaced by paint over a metal cylinder. What do you like or dislike about particular penmakers' changes?
Can’t wait to watch this write stuff episode!
Can you do a list of your favorite ink bottles, as well as a video on the best (and worst) bottle designs for filling piston and vacuum pens?
I think there has to be an entire video on this. ;-) If there is, I'll be sure to give you credit.
You really scared me for a minute when you said the majority of customers preferred ballpoint pens. I said some really disparaging stuff in my head. 😂😂😂
I used to be a bona-fide ballpoint pen lover until a few years ago. Now, I rarely pick up a ballpoint. I prefer gel/rollerball, and I am also a fountain pen newbie.
@@MsObsidianReloaded Me too.
Great video! Looking forward to the new releases. And I’m also hoping to hear about the Leonardo Momento Zero Giada Jade in silver trim coming back in stock. I missed out last time around and it’s been sold out for months. All updates are appreciated!
That Amethyst Kaweco is beautiful.
Do you have a particular script you like to use to take notes in or have you made your own over the years and stick with your "natural handwriting"? Do you normally print or use cursive?
I really like to see more of the new products! It's like seeing what is next in the coming theater for movies. The question I would like to be answered is, is there a reason why people prefer gold nibs over steel nibs? It seems like it's wayyyyyy cheaper to product steel nib compare to gold nibs but some of the gold nibs by pilot are cheaper to buy than with jowo steel nibs.
Thank you in advance if you answer my question!
Thanks - some fun new pens. I love the Kakuno, and find it much more comfortable than the Metropolitan. However, I really wish it came with a broad nib.
Yes! I love my Kakuno and would love a broad option. I love that they have a lot of colors and are so adorable 🥰
I see a lot of questions geared towards beginners, which isn't bad. This week I'd like to focus on more experienced pen people: How do you keep the pen hobby interesting? When is a good time to branch for gold nibs and specialty grinds?
Thanks for increasing upcoming pen notification. Good move.
The Kakuno 2024 is called family series in asia as seen in the nib design (father, mother, kids)
So a question I had was on large capacity fountain pens. What normal, not oversized, fountain pens do you normally recommend when people are looking for a high capacity pen, as they refill several times a week with converters? Preferably with smooth broad nibs or stubs available. I keep getting asked that, and I tend to go with oversized pens which in many cases hold a lot... but at the same time are not for everyone.
Thanks!
Conklin duragraphs & Benus come to mind.
Really great 😊 pens i wanna to buy some !
Hi Tom, there are so many fantastic special editions out there. How do you deal with the fear of missing out? Also, how do you decide which ones to stock at goldspot?
Whenever I do my pen wishlist for the year I always need to leave space for a Kaweco or a Lamy, or two. 😂 I am trying hard to resist the blackberry Lamy but the Kaweco Al-sport is a must. 👍🏽
That new exclusive Kaweco is beautiful! But that little Opus 88 is adorable as well! What are your top recommendations for pocket pens? And is there anything we need to be aware of as we carry these cute little pens around in our pockets and purses as the weather turns warmer?
Thank you! We put together our thoughts on pocket / EDC pens on our blog here - goldspot.com/blogs/magazine/best-edc-pens
Can you give us more of your survey findings? 2023 top inks, pens, papers, etc
Just put in my order for my current grail pen, the namiki emperor, so it's up to you, tom, to show me my next one or else... #firetom
Really liking your videos this year. I'd like to know which pen companies have you visited and which one was the most interesting to see.
This one (Lamy) - ua-cam.com/video/nLtn7x4EDpk/v-deo.html
Tom, in light of having videos about sizing on the nibs, can you also do videos on pens that have corresponding gold nibs as well as silver. Like a video on the Pelikan M200 and M400- since they are the same size and filling style, the real difference is the gold vs steel nib and many people may want to know the difference between the two. Thanks in advance.
I'm new to the fountain pen world and i got into this hobby to improve my handwriting and I enjoy writing things down to remember them easier. My question is, what is the purpose of dot paper? And why is it such a popular choice? Keep up the good work and thank you for the valuable info from your channel. P.S. being an LSU fan, the kaweco royal amethyst is one of the best looking pens out there.
Hi Tom and Goldspot team! That Kaweco Royal Amethyst looks gorgeous.
My question is regarding TWSBI. In the past, TWSBI Stubs were always $5 more than the tipped counterparts, but I noticed that recently the stubs are priced the same as the other nibs. In the past, people used to claim this was an indicator that the Stub used a different, wetter feed than the Extra Fine through Broad nibs. Was that ever true? Or was it simply an arbitrary price discrepancy that has since been corrected?
Thank you again for another great video and giveaway!
Question: Do you have to worry about inks freezing in colder climates during the winter months? I wonder about placing ink orders when the temperatures are below freezing and also about transporting pens and inks as EDC during the winter months when our temperatures remain below freezing.
Tom, the Write Stuff Podcast is it only available on UA-cam or can you get it else where?
Nicely done video. When the video ended, I couldn't believe 15 minutes had gone by.
Hi Tom, what is your most cherished pen and why? Thanks for sharing.
I recently found an old bottle of ink I got at least 15 years ago, and it seems to have somewhat dried up. The ink is thicker than I remember and I was wondering I it is salvageable. Thank you.
If it's significantly dried up, chances are it might have some trouble flowing in your fountain pen again. You could try adding distilled water to the ink bottle to reconstitute the ink. But, it would be difficult to know exactly how much water evaporated over time. I would recommend tossing the ink bottle.
What pens do you recommend for an intermediate level enthusiast? I have just started to write in a way that satisfies me but i want to see how much i can do more with a better pen.
What are your tips for working with light/pale inks? Very broad nibs, or best saved for drawing?
Thanks for a great video. I have been in this hobby for past 8 years but still have not been able to clearly distinguish between dry/wet nibs and dry/wet inks. Which is the driving Is there a thumb rule or a way to know whether a nib is dry/wet or an ink so?
Why are converters and piston-fillers threaded backward? With standard threading, turning clockwise would lower the piston, instead of raising it. This has been hard to get used to.
Gold actually goes really well with purple imo, so I may have to check into that kaweco, even though I'm not a huge fan of the sport
Question for Tom: if you could only have 1 black ink what would it be? Document ink? Any recommendations?
Hi Tom, thank you for the videos! I am wondering if this new Lamy Bottled Ink in Violet Blackberry 2024 Special Edition - 50ml is close in color to the Lamy Violet that was a limited edition a while back?
How do you decide which ink brands to carry?
I'm in love with the sakura opus 88 mini - the clear body with flowers is so pretty! I recently got my first twsbi fountain pen as a gift and I think I've got a new addiction, so my question might be kind of obvious. Do you bring pens out with you on errands or travel with them? Which pens would be the safest to fly with?
If I know that I'll be taking notes or writing, you bet I'm taking my pens with me. Here's a post we wrote all about flying with fountain pens which will give you more knowledge about the subject - goldspot.com/blogs/magazine/flying-with-fountain-pen
Hi Tom, I enjoyed seeing the sneak peaks in this episode. Is there a particular pen show you recommend for someone to attend if it's their first time going? Also, what are some strategies to making the most out of attending a pen show? Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
You can find my answer to your question here - ua-cam.com/video/JugApPffKXs/v-deo.html
Tom, is there a Goldspot exclusive pen you aspire to offer one day that hasn't been made yet? AKA, your "grail" exclusive.
Question, I really like the look of the Platinum 3776 but I’m not sure what type of nib to order. Can you compare them to Visconti or Sailor nibs?
Loved this video! My question is: What are some beginner friendly flex nib pens? Would love to try one, but would prefer beginner friendly ;)
Here are our best recommendations for starter flex nib fountain pens at various price levels - goldspot.com/blogs/magazine/how-to-write-with-a-flex-nib-fountain-pen
I have the Cherry Blossom Benu pen, and I love it. I don't have any opus pens yet and would love to get one. My question is- I am ready to buy my first gold nib, and a pen friend suggested that I get a gold Lamy nib to put on one of my favorite Lamy pens. Do you think that would give me a true gold nib experience, or should I just get a new gold nib pen?
What do you think of the Mitsubishi Pencil Company's acquisition of Lamy? Is this good news or not? Any expected changes?
What kind of inks are the best if you like fine nibs but still want something interesting?
What is your favorite paper to write on, and does it differ based on nib size or manufacturer?
New subscriber here and loving your channel. Also new to fountain pens and starting a small collection starting with the Pilot vanishing point pens, and two Mountblanc pens. Question: I am so confused about the nib size and what is best for me and I can see different use cases for different sized nibs but not sure which one is the best for a new fountain pen user? To make it more complicated I’m hearing that it really depends on the manufacturer, and in some cases the region of the country., Any help you could offer?
Here is my question. 😊 When filling a fountain pen that uses a converter, is it better to fill the converter straight from the bottle, or leave the converter in the pen and draw up the ink through the nib? Does filling through the nib help avoid hard starts better?
I prefer filling the converter with the nib attached so the ink can also prime the feed at the same time. I feel like it helps get the pen writing quicker than filling the converter directly from the bottle. Both methods are acceptable. Just a matter of preference.
@@GoldspotPens I think you’re spot on! Every times I’ve filled just the converter, I have trouble. I can dip the nib in water and get it started, but it doesn’t help the next writing session.
Lamy Safari or Lamy Studio? Which is smoother? 🤔
How safe are sheening inks in expensive pens? I am sure glitter ones are not recommended.
What pen would you recommend for student note taking? Snap caps are quick, but what screw on caps with a low number of turns are out there?
Pelikan and Leonardo are both either 1 turn or under. Also the Visconti hook lock safe mechanism on the Homo Sapiens.
What are the best pocket size books? I mean something small like 2-3 inches tall.
I dropped my gold pilot Metropolitan and damaged the nib. Is there any other nib that fits? If not, is it worth trying to get repaired or because of the low price point should I just replace it? (I really want to keep using it. )
I would like to try a Lamy pen, but the clip on most affordable Lamys is so ugly I just can't ever see myself owning one. Do they make a good pen under, say, $80 with a non paper clip clip? Maybe Goldspot could come up with an aftermarket clip to substitute for the wire monstrosity. I would buy one.
Have you seen the Lamy Studio? goldspot.com/products/lamy-studio-fountain-pen-in-black-forest-limited-edition-2021
Thank you so much for making my comment the question of the week, still can't believe I actually won a UA-cam giveaway :D email sent!
Ha, i am well into my fountainpen journey. And on informational videos i also write along to the video. i write down my thoughts, what i find interesting and so on. I think that is a good and fun way to enjoy your fountain pen.
@@Hosenbisla I'm actually happy to hear that because I felt weird about it at first lol I was so excited to have a fountain pen I would look for any excuse to write with it. Irony is, it's a plastic Kaweco Sport Collection in Bordeaux so it's fitting for me to win a Kaweco AL Sport. It's great to start a collection with a pen that has a story to it.
@@jodya.vonwahl2413I truly understand. My Girlfriend thinks it is a bit strange, too. But hey i enjoy it and it kind of relaxes me. So whatever brings you joy is the right use of a fountainpen for you. And since i sometimes write her little letters, she now likes it at least a bit.
Hello there! One of my bottles of ink has a weird, sludgy consistency. When looking through reviews of the specific ink, I do not see anyone commenting on it being strange, so I fear that it has turned bad. (It does not smell though, nor is there any mold visible.) What do I need to do to the pens/accessories the ink touched? Is cleaning them with water/soap sufficient? Obviously, I don't want this to spread to my other inks/pens...
Most likely, the mold contaminated the bottle. You could do a simple rinse out of any pen that you used with that ink. Use pen flush if the ink caused any clogging or flow issues in your feeds.
My question, would Goldspot be considering a Glow in the dark version of the Kaweco Sport as an exclusive in the future? I would be very interested in this especially if it has some shimmer :)
Glow in the dark would be interesting, but it would also have to look fun and interesting without being in the dark.
@@GoldspotPens I'm excited to see if yall do decide to make it :)
What would you consider the most flashy pen that Goldspot sells?
Hey Tom, I am looking to buy a new fountain pen with a stub nib. What stub nib pen do you recommend?
For someone who writes a lot, such that most days of the week a standard international cartridge doesn't last a day what filling system would you recommend given a greater than 1ml of ink capacity?
I'd opt for a pen that uses a piston-filling mechanism or go with an Opus 88 which uses an eyedropper-fill system.
How do you control an enormous ink collection?
Hi Tom! How often should I flush my pens? Is there any flush you recommend?
I would only flush if you have a stain or performance issues in terms of flow or filling your pen. Monteverde makes a good flush you can find here - goldspot.com/products/monteverde-fountain-pen-flush-to-clean-stubborn-build-up-30ml-bottle
I was wondering if Chinese pen brands like Asvine or Hongdian are too "cheap" for Goldspot to sell? Is it not profitable? I would prefer to buy from you than Amazon. 😊
what is the best starter fountain pen for drawing ?

How can i get a fude nib? Besides Sailor pens…
Q : Can you economically build a superb collection by only buying new?
If you had unlimited spending power, which gold-nibbed fountain pen would you purchase and why?
how do fountain pen writers overcome the strange looks "non users" give when they realize you are actually writing, and with a fountain pen?
Take it as an opportunity to educate and share your passion for pens.
what kind of advice would you give to your past self before collecting fountain pens?

Why don't you cover pens made in india!
I guess you missed that we've been talking about Magna Carta pens lately.
